Saxophonist/composer Phil Woods (born Nov 2, 1931), is by many musicians considered the major exponent of the alto saxophone for the past sixty years. His big, commanding sound, strong sense of swing, and command of harmony are second to none. His playing is totally distinctive and immediately recognizable. He may be best known to the average listener as the saxophone soloist on the Billy Joel hit, Just the Way You Are, but he can be heard on recordings with Steely Dan and other pop acts, but his real musical personality is as a pure bebopper, indeed, he kept a pure jazz group working under his leadership for the last 25 years of his life, with the same bassist (Steve Gilmore) and drummer (Bill Goodwin) the entire time.
Tonight"s Jazz Feature is a tribute to the great arranger/composer/producer and music icon Quincy Delight Jones or simply "Q". Quincy passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles at age 91 on November 3, 2024. He was born in Chicago on March 14,1933. Quincy's incredible history is easily accessed on the internet. So we turn to the Jazz feature album and it's a big band recording of Quincy's distinctive arrangements and really put Quincy on the Jazz map. It was done in September of 1956 and titled "This Is How I Feel About Jazz". It got rave reviews and established Jones as a top notch arranger/composer along with his production skills. The band is full o all star players from trumpeters Art farmer and Ernie Royal to saxophonists Phil Woods, Zoot Sims and Lucky Thompson and trombone masters like Jimmy Cleveland and Urbie Green and pianist Hank Jones, vibes master Milt Jackson to bassists Paul Chambers and Charles Mingus. The album is a masterpiece of arrangements and leaves room for so many great soloists too. Enjoy the earlt important music of Quincy Jones.

Trumpeter/composer Tom Harrell, born June 16, 1946, is one of most creative players of his instrument, and a prolific and fresh compositional voice as well. His achievements are all the more remarkable when you consider he suffers from symptoms of schizophrenia, and has only one lung! Early in his career he toured with the big bands of Stan Kenton and Woody Herman, followed by sideman stints with Horace Silver and Phil Woods. For the past three decades he has carved out his place as a leader in his own right, and composes wonderful original music in abundance.

Tonight's Jazz Feature is Part 2 of a regular annual tradition on The Jazz Show and highlights September's "back to school, back to work tradition". Basically a little enjoyable and fun music education with Maestro Bernstein explaining "What is Jazz". This is an easy and sometimes humorous explanation of what Jazz is and what Jazz isn't in terms that one doesn't need a music education to understand. Leonard Bernstein made it a life long effort to bring music to the people and to make the most complex music easy to understand. There is also a bit of unintentional humor in this recording made in 1956 and these bits will make today's person grin a little. However this is by and large an important document and always worth hearing again. Enjoy Maestro Bernstein and the many musicians involved in this project like Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith, Coleman Hawkins, Phil Woods, Miles Davis and John Coltrane and of course Maestro Leonard Bernstein..

As a young girl, Brookline musician Grace Kelly dreamed of being Hollywood actress turned princess of the same name, Grace Kelly. The saxophonist told Under the Radar how movies have long inspired her musically: "Movies have always taken me into this other reality, and I think music is similar in that when you see amazing musicians on stage, working together, creating this amazing moment that gives that emotional release, like 'oh, this is just beautiful,' and I feel that way when I'm making music." The talented musician grew up to make a name for herself as a performer, playing alongside saxophone legend Phil Woods and as a soloist with the Boston Pops Orchestra at just 14. At 16, she performed at President Obama's 2009 inauguration. But professional musicians took note of her skill when she was only in middle school: "Back when I was starting professionally at 13 I didn't even know that could be a job ... I have had such incredible mentors ... starting with my first saxophone teacher who invited me to play at his jam session when I was 12-years-old, and I had never done that before." Now, at 30, the prodigy is showcasing her love for the movies in the East Coast premiere of a special concert: ‘At the Movies: Grace Kelly with Strings' featuring a 15-piece ensemble at the Berklee Performance Center on April 29. GUEST Grace Kelly, saxophonist, singer, songwriter, band leader, co-leader of the band 2saxy and composer of Under the Radar's theme music

It is a passion that started when he was young, and Ed Bride has carried his love for jazz just about everywhere he's gone. In the process, he's enriched his own communities, whether it was at his alma mater Villanova decades ago, or in a movement in the Berkshires that has brought world-class talent here as well as cultivating young musicians. The vision Ed had for a lighting up the Berkshires with jazz has led to a staple organization, Berkshires Jazz. Also, Pittsfield and the Berkshires have now become a place of jazz lore with moments between the late Phil Woods and his protege Grace Kelly, the late Dave Brubeck rehearsing with musicians from Pittsfield High School and so much more. In this episode, Ed talks about how he fell in love with jazz first hearing the music of Stan Kenton, his work with the Villanova Jazz Festival, a Stan Kenton 50th birthday radio show that Ed hosted back then (we've got clips!), how he met his wife, Marguerite (Marge), the music he plays at night on the piano, a wonderful anecdote on how the late Ellen Ruberto set the tone for starting the Pittsfield City Jazz Festival, the contributions of many passionate volunteers and board members, infusing jazz into the schools, developing young jazz talent and more. I hope you will enjoy my conversation with Ed Bride! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-krol/support
