We're back and warming up for the official return of Making It with Chris G this Thursday with a brand new format: the Coffee Chat Q&A ☕️
This episode features Benny, a musician and producer who performs under the name Muted Circus. Benny, originally from Orange County, California, is currently based in Brooklyn, New York. He spent seven years in Tokyo, Japan, and attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. The discussion starts with Benny sharing the story of his first rock concert at the age of 13, where he saw The Get Up Kids in a small, intimate venue in his hometown. This concert sparked his lifelong passion for live music, leading him to attend concerts frequently, including during his college years and time in Japan. Benny reminisces about the DIY music scene of Orange County in the '90s and shares anecdotes about attending shows with his older brother and friends. He also recalls a memorable yet disappointing encounter with Dave Mustaine from Megadeth during a concert in Tokyo, juxtaposing it with a positive experience meeting Marty Friedman, a former Megadeth guitarist. The conversation then shifts towards Benny's musical project, Muted Circus, a deeply personal undertaking inspired by the death of his father. The project comprises 10 EPs with 50 songs, each featuring his father's visual artwork on the covers. Benny explains how creating this music helped him process his grief and reflect on his relationship with his father. He delves into the themes explored in his music, often revolving around the impact of his parents on his life. Benny shares the challenges and emotional journey of writing and recording these songs over several years. He also introspects on the nuances of live vs. recorded music and the emotional resonance that well-produced music can often deliver.During the interview, Benny performs 'Disconnection,' a song from his final EP in the Muted Circus series. The song captures the sentiment of final phone calls with a loved one and reflects Benny's extensive relationship with his father through daily check-ins on the phone. The episode concludes with Benny discussing his future plans for more music releases under different projects and emphasizing the therapeutic power of music in processing complex emotions. Listeners can explore Benny's work on platforms like Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube.BANDS: No Doubt, The Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World, Real Big Fish, Gwen and Eric Stefani, Megadeth, NSYNC, Metallica, Slayer, Marty Friedman, Dave Mustaine.VENUES: Makuhari Messe (Japan), Koos Cafe, The Chain Reaction, Madison Square Garden. In Episode Five, Dave Reis speaks with internationally renowned, award-winning jazz musician Greg Abate, a saxophonist, flutist, and composer. He's traveled the globe on his musical tours. After finishing his education at Berklee College Of Music in the mid-70s, Greg Abate went on to play lead alto saxophone for the Ray Charles Orchestra for 2 years. Abate formed his group Channel One in 1978. It became a New England favorite and offered him an opportunity to play tenor sax from 1986-87 with the revived Artie Shaw Orchestra under the leadership of Dick Johnson. He was recently ranked number three in the Downbeat reader's poll for alto sax. The Artist Index's jazz documentarian and Jazz Podcast Series host, Dave Reis, spent nearly 26 years as a Jazz radio show host, among his many other accomplishments. He was one of the original longtime DJs who worked at the former WUSM which became radio station WUMD, 89.3 FM, on the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth campus. Dave Reis, AKA David Domingo Reis, began as our guest on In-Focus Podcast 154. and In-Focus Podcast 181. He returns once again as the host of our first-ever ten-part jazz podcast series underwritten by the Fiber Optic Center. There is no better host for this series than Dave Reis, a walking, talking jazz encyclopedia and local legend himself. Dave grew up surrounded by and hanging around with many of the jazz greats he will be presenting his ten-part Jazz Podcast Series underwritten by the Fiber Optic Center. World-renowned saxophonist and Blue Note recording artist Walter Smith III is the model music educator and practitioner. This enormously talented saxophonist pursued music education as a profession as far back as high school. In this episode, Walter's storied career follows the path beginning with performing at McDonald's at age 7, to an exciting area of study at one of today's premier high schools, Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) in Houston, Texas to leadership roles at Berklee College of Music, reflecting on experiences at the Thelonious Monk Institute (today, the Herbie Hancock Institute) and exciting tours with legends like Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. Gender equity in jazz, a priority for Walter, is spearheaded by the Berklee Jazz and Gender Justice Institute, and innovations in jazz education promoting inclusivity. Walter touches on his transition from Boston to New York, emphasizing the interplay between performance and teaching. Walter Smith III just released his eleventh album as a leader. Our conversation on Strictly Jazz Sounds also takes a deep dive into three of us are from Houston and Reuben is not. This project includes three of his closest music cohorts who are three of the most accomplished and influential musicians in jazz today: Jason Moran-piano, Reuben Rogers-bass, and Eric Harland-drums. The music does not disappoint in any way. We listen to clips of selected tracks, discuss the music and the significance, if any, of the composition titles. Walter is/has been a member of many legendary and highly accomplished groups (recording and/or touring) including the Roy Haynes Fountain of Youth Band (Walter was fired when he decided to go to Los Angeles, California), Terence Blanchard Quintet, Jason Moran's In My Mind: Monk at Town Hall, Ambrose Akinmusire Quintet, and the Christian McBride “Situation”, He's also teamed up with Eric Harland's “Voyager”, the Bill Stewart Trio, Marquis Hill's “New Gospel Revisited”, and the Sean Jones Quintet among others. In this episode of Music You're Missing, host Brendan Jeannetti sits down with Peter Boyd, the Talent Buyer for Boston Calling, to explore his unique journey into the music industry and the behind-the-scenes challenges of organizing a major festival. Peter's story takes us from his college radio days to his current role at one of Boston's most iconic events, all while offering invaluable insights for those looking to break into the industry.Peter shared that his career path was anything but linear. Starting as a college radio host, he stumbled into the music scene, eventually finding himself bartending at a live music venue in Boston. It was during this time that he began managing bands and booking shows—skills that would later be instrumental in his role at Boston Calling. He emphasized the importance of taking initiative, noting that he started booking shows simply because he was "bored" and felt stuck in the service industry. This entrepreneurial spirit set the foundation for his eventual leap into festival management. At Boston Calling, Peter and his small team orchestrate the three-day festival, which has grown into one of the city's premier events. Peter highlighted the importance of preparation, explaining that much of the festival's success hinges on detailed planning long before the gates open. "If everything is done correctly ahead of time, all you can do is wait for something to go wrong during the event," he explained, underscoring the unpredictable nature of live events. One of the key takeaways from the conversation was the importance of local talent to Boston Calling's identity. The festival is unique in its commitment to featuring Boston-based artists on its Orange Stage, giving lesser-known acts a platform alongside headliners like Megan Thee Stallion and Hozier. Peter described how booking local talent was a deliberate choice, helping these artists gain exposure while enriching the festival with a homegrown feel. He also stressed that for emerging artists, the key to getting noticed is not just having a strong online presence, but being active in the live music scene—whether that's through consistent gigging or putting yourself out there. This year's Boston Calling showcased Chapell Roan's rapid rise to stardom. Peter recalled how her main stage set at Boston Calling drew an unexpectedly massive crowd. He noted that while the festival's team saw her potential early on, even they were surprised by how quickly she connected with audiences. Her performance, he said, mirrored the kind of breakout moments Boston Calling has become known for, giving artists a chance to make an indelible mark on the festival circuit. For those aspiring to break into the music industry, Peter's advice was straightforward: be persistent and don't be afraid to start small. Whether it's managing a band, taking photos at shows, or volunteering at events, the key is to get involved and make connections. Reflecting on his journey, Peter emphasized that success in the music industry often comes from being in the right place at the right time—but more importantly, from being ready when those opportunities arise.Tune into this episode of Music You're Missing for more insider tips, stories from the festival circuit, and a deep dive into the creative chaos behind Boston's largest music event.
In this episode, I spend time with Grammy Award-winning pianist and Berklee College of Music professor of Jazz Kris Davis on 'Strictly Jazz Sounds.' We do a deep dive into her latest project, Run the Gauntlet, dedicated to six influential women jazz pianists, which drops on September 27, 2024. A common thread is woven throughout the hour, mentoring. As a recipient of it herself, Kris Davis discusses the importance of fostering the next generation of jazz musicians. She also provides a detail description of her fascinating composition process. Kris Davis and I spend time discussing her label, Pyroclastic Records and how the non-profit organization is critical to creating adventurous improvisational jazz. Davis and Pyroclastic Records generously provide three compositions for this episode. The Kris Davis Trio is comprised of three highly accomplished, award-winning artists: Kris Davis-piano, Robert Hurst-bass, and Johnathan Blake-drums. The 23rd Episode opens with “Heavy-Footed” (6:00); at about 30 minutes you will hear “Dream State (4:55), and it closes with “Little Footsteps” (5:12). Kris Davis is a remarkable composer. She's brilliant in her work which reflects her dedication to learning and expanding her horizons. Subsequently, Kris has been recognized by DownBeat magazine and the Jazz Journalists Association as Pianist of the Year. She's a Doris Duke Foundation Artist, her work recognized by the New York Times and NPR-National Public Radio as number one. Since her debut album, Lifespan, which was released in 2003, Kris Davis is a leader/co-leader on 25 recordings. All these accolades are great but what matters most to Kris Davis, is expanding the music and assuring that the next generation of jazz artists is successful. Kelli Owens Hutton made a record called Soccer Trophy and in the process created a genre called MomCore. Soccer Trophy is brutal truth. Two minute guitar driven rock and roll songs about children, middle-age, marriage and all the shit. It's also funny, revealing and moving. Kelli partnered with Grammy-nominated (in children's music, but still...) producer Liam Davis. They made the record in her Chicago home studio, aka the laundry room. A multi-instrumentalist Kelli played every instrument except the drums. Ok, she played bass on like half the songs too. A Berklee College Of Music grad and major-label wash out (Atlantic records but who's counting?) Kelli took a long time off making music to raise her kids. They are a pain in the ass but she loves them anyway. The Dog of course comes first. Somewhere in there is also her husband. The second single “Shut Up” will be released August 2024 and the full record will be released in Fall of 2024. kelliowenshutton.comHost - Trey MitchellIG - treymitchellphotographyIG - feeding_the_senses_unsensoredFB - facebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848Sponsorship Information - ftsunashville@gmail.comTheme Song - The Wanshttps://www.thewansmusic.com/

In this Jazz Guitar Today podcast, Bob Bakert talks to ‘Berklee College of Music's guitar brain trust: Kim Perlak, Sheryl Bailey, and Larry Baione about their new guitar instruction book, “Berklee Guitar Theory”. Originally published on Jazz Guitar Today on June 20, 2023.Bob Bakert: “Berklee Guitar Theory” was five years in the making, curated by the current chair, Kim Perlak, who herself is a classical-style player. I got my copy, perused it, and I can tell you this is an incredible piece of work. (Applause, take a bow Berklee) It is comprehensive and mirrors the rigors and expectations of the degree program in guitar at Berklee College of Music. It was a collaborative effort of all the faculty answering the question: “What do they, our students, and charges need to learn”…answer: A LOT!!! The good news is, that you don't have to spend 4 years full-time. You can grab what interests you, dare I say “Cherry Pick” from the materials what interests you. This book is a bargain… buy it, and start working on it, it will make you a better guitar player!Go to jazzguitartoday.com and bassmusicianmagazine.com more interviews and lessons.

We're stoked this week to have Luke Black and Drury Anderson of The Mountain Grass Unit as our guests on No Simple Road! The Mountain Grass Unit consists of three Birmingham pickers, Drury Anderson (mandolin and vocals), Luke Black (acoustic guitar and banjo), and Sam Wilson (upright bass). With the addition of Luke Black and Sam Wilson on harmonies, The Mountain Grass Unit has established the firm foundation to take on not only the vocal harmonies of traditional bluegrass tunes, but also the freedom to adapt songs from various genres to an all-acoustic format. Aside from their original songs, all three are equally comfortable restyling a Tony Rice number, a classic Grateful Dead tune, or covering contemporary acoustic masters like Billy Strings. The youthful exuberance and energy they bring to the stage is always remarkable. We talk with the guys about:Their experience attending Berklee College Of Music. How they have explored and developed their vocal chops. The was they got Sam to join the band and play the upright bass. How rap rhythms influence their sound. If they are feeling the wave of momentum behind them and how it is affecting their world. How they came to learn about Jamgrass and the way the community has taken them in.Where they see themselves fitting into the wider tapestry of the musical community,How they deal with playing for rowdy crowds. Some of the kindness and love they've found on the road.... and much, much more!Head over to www.mountaingrassunit.wordpress.com to learn more!INTRO MUSIC PROVIDED BY - WILL HANZA OF ESCAPER-Grab your tickets now for Skull & Roses Festival April 19th - 23rd at the hallowed grounds of the Ventura County Raceway! www.skullandroses.com-FREE SHIPPING from Shop Tour Bus Use The PROMO CODE: nosimpleroad-Make Sure to visit our friends at Fire On The Mountain for some amazing food at one of the 3 location in the Portland area or one of the 2 location in the Denver area!-CHECK OUT THE NSR EXCLUSIVE BETA PREVIEW OF www.venuellama.comMUSIC IN THE COMMERCIALS BY AND USED WITH PERMISSION OF:ANDREW HENDRYXOUTRO MUSIC BY AND USED WITH PERMISSION OF:CHILLDREN OF INDIGONo Simple Road is part of OSIRIS MEDIA. Jacob's resume includes studying under the direction of such luminaries as Victor Bailey at Berklee College of Music and playing as part of masterful prog metal band Intervals. While his 6-string wonder of an instrument from Dingwall signifies his epic chops, Jacob is committed first and foremost to the most important role of the bass player—holding the band together with groove and authority. Speaking with host Josh Paul, Jacob gets deep with all things bass and more.
Working on tv shows, tours abroad and Los Angeles: where is Carlos Lazzari?Gaucho, who played with the band Melody, is touring the United States and working on soundtracks for Netflix shows.Former drummer of the band Melody, who gained prominence in Brazil in 2014 for participating in the yet extinct music tv show SuperStar on Globo, Carlos Lazzari, 33 years old, is now a citizen of the world. The gaúcho, who has already played with important names in the scene, such as Sérgio Rojas, Renato Borghetti, Serginho Moah and Tonho Crocco, toured the country before moving to Los Angeles, California, where he lives today.- “A few years ago, I left Porto Alegre, went to São Paulo, studied at a music conservatory, where I won my scholarship to study at Berklee College Of Music. Then I returned to Porto Alegre. I ended up playing with some artists and forming the band Melody” - he mentions. After touring with Melody, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he performed as the drummer for Globo's reality shows The Voice, The Voice Kids and Popstar. As if that wasn't enough, he toured with Isabela Taviani, a well known MPB artist, from Rio de Janeiro, until he finally moved to Los Angeles. After making his mark in the world of music, the Gaúcho reached a level desired by many artists: today, he works as a composer for movies, arranger, producer and drummer.- “I had a phenomenal experience working as a drummer for SanPa: Sins of the Savior (from 2020, Italian documentary, original production by Netflix, which tells the story of a businessman who worked in the treatment of drug addicts), the documentary ended up winning an award in Italy, It was sensational “- he adds.In the gaúcho's already full-bodied résumé, there is also work as an arranger on the short film The Make Up (2021), Which won the Audience Award, at the Toronto Shorts International Film Festival, in Canada.Cacá does not stop there. During the month of August he will be touring the United States with American artist Vella. The tour, which should go on until October, is going to be held at multiple events such as the Prairie Dog Blues Festival (on the 30th and 31st of this month) and PopCon, in September, both on North American soil. To top it off, the Gaucho is participating in a new Netflix project.- But I still can't tell you anything about it - it's a mystery.https://www.carloslazzari.com/
