For our third and final entry in our "Summer Season", we are talking about Girls Against Boys debut full length, Tropic of Scorpio, from 1992. This was one of the harder years to find an album to fit our theme, and while musically GVSB's might not seem summery, that album cover is pure heat.Join our Patreon to get bonus audio, videos, blog posts, and access to our Discord for only $1 at patreon.com/punklottopodPodcast platforms and social media links at linktr.ee/punklottopodCall our voicemail line: 202-688-PUNKLeave us a review and rating on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.Song clips featured on this episode:Girls Against Boys - My Night of PleasureGirls Against Boys - Wow Wow WowGirls Against Boys - Wasting Away
On this week's episode of SPOKE, Scott Crawford sat down with Scott McCloud—singer/guitarist for Girls Against Boys and Paramount Styles as well as guitarist for DC punk legends Soulside. On the eve of Touch & Go Records reissuing their 1995 classic, "House of GVSB" LP, we dig deep into the 1990s landscape and how Girls Against Boys navigated the decade. McCloud also discussed the DC punk scene, stealing from Tower Records, buying parking lots in NYC, and much more. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/scott-crawford3/message
This week we get to chat with Eli Janney, who you may know as the keyboardist, bassist and backing vocals in Girls Against Boys. You may also know him as the producer for such bands as Brainiac, Ryan Adams, Skeleton Key, Jesse Maiin and many more. You may also know him as the man who remixed tracks by artists such as the Sneaker Pimps, Ruby, Hooverphonic, Enon and more. You may also know him as the current keyboardist and associate music director in the 8G Band on Late Night with Seth Meyers. What we're saying is, Eli is a busy guy, because that doesn't even include his music engineering and mixing credits, as well as his other work in television and film. We talk to about how he ended up in the world of late night television all the way back to his time working at the legendary Inner Ear recording studio with Don Zientara that documented so much of the ‘80s DC punk and hardcore scene. We learn how GVSB formed, the trials of a touring with a keyboard in 1992, and what it means to be in a band with a distinct and recognizable “sound” and how that both focuses and restricts creativity. All this and much, much more. Girls Against Boys are one of the coolest-sounding bands I've ever heard, with a menacing bottom-heavy rhythm section, swaggery vocals and a crisp, lacerating guitar that cuts through it all. These days, GVSB is relatively dormant, meaning live performances from them are opportunities to treasure. They played this year's Riot Fest in Chicago in broad daylight (the band's arguably more suited to playing a sleazy, sweaty, darkened room). I sat down with singer Scott McCloud and drummer Alexis Fleisig after their performance. They talked about the band's potential future, their catalog and the fact that "Chicago's probably one of the best cities for (them) in the United States."

With their first new release in eleven years, it about time we got around to one of the most unique bands of the 90s, Girls Against Boys, and their sophomore release from 1993, Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby. With a pair of bass slingers and a vocalist buried in the mix that sounds like he's gargling rocks (that's a compliment), GVSB explores the dark and dirty side of alternative, combining elements of post-punk and industrial into a murky but often tasty stew.Songs in this Episode:Intro - Rockets Are Red3:41 - History of the Band11:00 - Satin Down16:58 - Get Down19:34 - Bullet Proof CupidOutro - Learned ItFollow on Twitter / FacebookRequest A Review

The title says it all. Keep spreading the word and fighting for individual liberty! This is a short pod, and there is more on the way, coming from Gardner and Furb, as they discuss the revelations about the NSA and how the politicians are unwilling to look at the real story, and a great conversation about how the federal government has inflated the prices of college degrees and destroyed the quality of many of those degrees. Comin' soon! In this pod we include music by Fu Manchu a bit of "Strato Streak", some WIRE "Agfers of Kodak", Girls Against Boys (a piece from "Speedway"), and a full tune from the New Bomb Turks "Grandpa Atomic"! Find their stuff if you're so inclined, Kevin Klein. Be Seeing You! At www.libertyconspiracy.com!
Greetings! We've decided to give our PRISM-FISA and Fourth Amendment studies an extra punch. In this production, we've taken the key elements of our 6-10-13 podcast and rendered them into one core program that spells out the PRISM controversy, what it means to the 4th Amendment, and where the FISA act, which is being used as the "statutory justification" for PRISM, originated. We also explain how none of the FISA law comports to the actual wording of the US Bill of Rights, specifically, the 4th Amendment. And this time, Gardner Goldsmith has taken one of the music pieces from the original pod and worked his editing magic to make it a fitting "F-U" to the liars in politics who trample on rights and tell you they're not, or that it's for "your own good." Listen for "Rockets Are Red" at the start of the production. Visit us and join the Conspiracy for Freedom, at www.libertyconspiracy.com Remain serious about liberty. Be Seeing You.
The Liberty Conspiracy, a clenched punk fist smashing into the face of the state and the hypocrites who support it and work for its ceaseless attacks on individual sovereignty. In this program (sponsored by Con-WOW!)we look at the shock the pop media have expressed about the current president's clearly unconstitutional, immoral and evil assassination program and his attacks on US and foreign civilians. No trial, no presentation of evidence. No presumption of innocence. Just death from above (not 1979 -- look up the band, good one). This is an intense program. We can see how quickly the system is unraveling. On a recent "Ed" show (you know, the dummy we exposed for his complete lack of understanding about how speculation in products actually helps keep their prices lower during times of dearth) Ed's production team posted a poll. 78% of those who responded thought it was acceptable for the US government to assassinate Americans without trial. We're in the minority. Things are unwinding rapidly. Get ready for bad mojo, kids. This program also features a discussion of a recent viral vid that shows a teenage girl in court, and how a bored judge slammed her for saying WORDS. Think about it. Was she convicted of a crime? Did she or did she not retain her right to free speech? What does that tell us about the unworkability of a courtroom and the consistency of government to "protect" speech rights when it chooses to block them when its agents don't like the language you use? With KICK ASS music by The Datsuns "Harmonic Generator", SHINING (Norway) "Fisheye", The Dead Boys "Sonic Reducer", The Prodigy "Baby's Got a Temper", The Prodigy "Spitfire", The Zulus "Directly from Our Hearts to Yours", Girls Against Boys "Rockets are Red", WIRE "Agfers of Kodack", and Tribe "Abort" - Buy them if you can and please remember, we rely on donations to keep our vast audio library out there to prove our points about freedom. Be Seeing You!
We gots a goooood show for youz in this one (but don't we always?)! This time, the Conspiracy takes on the politicians and their sycophants who claim that people are driven to violence by watching violent television and playing violent video games. Not only have there been no scientific studies to prove this, the incidence of violence in the US has DROPPED as video games that depict violence have become more popular!. Gardner Goldsmith is joined in the studio by his niece, a very dangerous young lady named Brianna, and they look at one so-called social scientist and his claims that there IS a causal connection between video games and real violence. There is not, and by looking at the sad, subjectively determined criteria this man has used in his so-called study, we can see how manipulated science is by political goals and agendas. We stick with logic and real science, real facts, and we DEMOLISH this kind of silliness. Really think you'll enjoy this. Many thanks to Brianna for her help, and to those of you who download the program, or listen online or send a link to a friend. Muchas gracias! The music in this production includes: Girls Against Boys "Speedway", Danko Jones "Starlicker", Grinderman "Honey Bee (Let's Fly to the Moon)", "Heathen Child", Suicidal Tendencies "Institutionalized", The Prodigy "Run With the Wolves", The Demons (from Sweden) "Dizzy", Danko Jones "The Finger", Grinderman "No Pussy Blue"! Hope you'll see them live and seek out their tunes via amazon or itunes! Be Seeing You! www.libertyconspiracy.com !
