Today's podcast begins and ends with further analysis of the awful violence that's happening on the streets of the great American city of Los Angeles. Our host, Mike Slater, explores the roots of the problems that led to these horrific riots and aims to provide context and solutions for those issues.Following the opener, The Honorable Chuck DeVore, Chief National Initiatives Officer at Texas Public Policy Foundation, comes on-air to talk about his personal experience with the 1992 L.A. riots as a member of the National Guard, and provide some firsthand experience on how things were dealt with back then and explain how those lessons could be useful in mitigating damage today.
Today on the 5: For our movie review this week, Lando and I watched Black Cat 2, the 1992 sequel to Black Cat. You'll find sharply divided opinions on whether the first movie or the sequel is superior, but in my view it all comes down to what kind of movie you're in the mood for.

Can you handle the truth? Sure, back in 1992, this military courtroom drama was a critical and box office smash. Tom Cruise! Demi Moore! Jack Nicholson! And all that yelling! How could it miss? But now, decades later, are we ready to issue a Code Red on this Oscar-nominated Best Picture? Is Cruise's cocksure persona the best fit for this heavy-handed tale of loyalty? Is Jack's manic line readings too big for this jurisdiction? And, for the love of God, will anyone listen to Demi's Joann, like, ever? What if the America you've been taught about isn't the America that actually existed? In this eye-opening exploration of our nation's Christian foundations, Jesse Cope presents compelling historical evidence from Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story that directly contradicts modern secular narratives about American history. The podcast begins with a challenging look at our personal priorities. "What you spend your time and energy on, that's your priority," Jesse states, confronting us with an uncomfortable truth: many of us claim God is important while dedicating hours to entertainment and mere minutes to prayer. Our calendars reveal our true values more honestly than our words ever could. The centerpiece of this episode is the forgotten testimony of Justice Joseph Story, appointed by President Madison and the youngest Supreme Court justice in history. His unanimous 1844 Supreme Court opinion explicitly declared America "a Christian country" where schools promoting non-Christian beliefs were "not to be presumed to exist." Even more revealing is Story's commentary on the First Amendment's true purpose: not to separate God from government, but to prevent the government from favoring one Christian denomination over others.Perhaps most startling is the 1992 Kentucky statute that had to be passed just to allow teachers to post historical documents containing religious references in schools. "It tells you that our history is so tied up with God and Jesus Christ that if you really want to teach history, you have to talk about God and Jesus Christ," Jesse explains.Woven throughout these historical revelations is a deeply personal message about trusting God through difficult seasons. When prayers seem to go unanswered for years, we might be missing God's greater purpose. Your faithfulness during trials may be setting an example that saves someone else's soul.Whether you're interested in American history, constitutional interpretation, or finding spiritual encouragement during challenging times, this episode offers profound insights that challenge conventional wisdom and inspire deeper faith.Support the showThe American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribe
This week is a mini-episode where we look back at a Friday night showdown last year on 9-28-2024 on our TikTok and IG. between albums 93 'Till Infinity VS. Bizarre Ride 2: The Pharcyde. The members of Bring The Noise Podcast vote themselves and reveal who the fans had picked as well.
Your calendar never lies about your priorities. In this thought-provoking episode, we tackle the uncomfortable truth that many of us claim God as our first priority while our daily time allocation tells a different story. Think about it—we intuitively know that spending time with someone is the clearest indicator of genuine care. Children understand this instinctively. Yet when it comes to our relationship with God, we often expect spiritual depth without investing regular, meaningful time. The results are predictably shallow.Drawing from 1 Timothy 2, we explore how prayer transforms not just those we pray for, but ourselves in the process. There's something counterintuitive yet powerful about praying for leaders we disagree with and those who've wronged us. The scripture's call to "lead tranquil and quiet lives" offers a refreshing alternative to the anxiety-producing habit of inserting ourselves into matters that don't require our attention. We also challenge the false dichotomy between scientific inquiry and Christian faith. History reveals countless scientists whose deeper exploration of our universe's complexity led them closer to, not further from, belief in a Creator. The intricate design evident in creation "bears the signature of its Creator graven in its works."The episode concludes with timeless wisdom from Harriet Beecher Stowe, written nearly a decade before the Civil War but eerily relevant today: our nation won't be saved by partisan alignment but "by repentance, justice and mercy." Take a moment today to honestly assess where your time goes. Does it align with what you claim to value most? The answer might be uncomfortable, but it's the first step toward authentic spiritual growth.Support the showThe American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribe

Can small acts of love really transform your relationships? Discover how aligning your actions with the teachings of Jesus Christ can bring profound changes to your personal life, and learn about the power of sincere devotion. We explore Proverbs 14 to contrast the wise with the foolish and reveal the importance of understanding and righteousness in navigating life's path. Dive deep into how authentic relationships with God and loved ones can be nurtured through faith. As we navigate the landscape of faith in the modern West, we confront the divide between acknowledging and mocking sin. We discuss the transformative impact of recognizing your imperfections and the importance of accepting Jesus Christ as your guide. Our conversation challenges the stagnation that comes from mere talk without action, highlighting how even the smallest responsible acts rooted in love can make a lasting difference. Fear of the Lord is redefined as a reverent love, similar to the respect one holds for a loving parent, affirming God's immense love for us all.The episode takes a crucial turn as we examine the relationship between Christianity and education in America. We trace the historical significance of biblical principles in the nation's founding and their gradual removal from the education system. Our discussion touches on key figures and historical shifts, questioning the interpretations of the First Amendment and advocating for a return to a biblically-centered educational framework. The cat. The bat. The bird. Yes, 1992's Batman Returns was stuffed to the gills with iconic characters. Danny DeVito's Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman took center stage while Michael Keaton's caped crusader basically drove around and posed a lot. Hardly mattered. Audiences flocked to see this sex-charged sequel. But now, decades later, is this dimly lit superhero hit too dark? Is the Penguin too gross? And is Catwoman too horny for this PG-13 flick? Al Pacino won his first Academy Award for his role as Lt. Col. Frank Slade, a cranky, demanding, foul-mouthed guy who also happens to be blind. Drew Barrymore was just 17 – seventeen, one seven – when she seduced a 58-year-old Tom Skerritt for the sake of the 1992 thriller Poison Ivy. Add to that a dead dog, a drunk dad, and a drugged Cheryl Ladd, and Poison Ivy was perhaps too much movie for commonfolk to handle. The film bombed at the box office, but was a bit hit on video, spawning two sequels. But now, decades later, were audiences right to avoid this film the first time around? “It's a helluva thing, killin' a man.”A Western Classic RevisitedClint Eastwood's 1992 Western masterpiece, Unforgiven, was a critical and commercial success upon its release. The film, which Eastwood directed and starred in, was a revisionist take on the classic Western genre, exploring themes of violence, redemption, and the myth of the American West. With its complex characters and morally ambiguous storyline, Unforgiven challenged traditional Western tropes and helped revitalize the genre for a new generation of filmgoers. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we conclude our member bonus series looking at the 1993 Academy Award Best Film Editing Nominees with Eastwood's 1992 film Unforgiven.Exploring the Depths of UnforgivenWe discuss how the film subverts traditional Western archetypes, presenting a more realistic and gritty portrayal of life on the frontier. We also explore the film's themes of violence and redemption, examining how Eastwood's character, William Munny, grapples with his past as a notorious outlaw and his desire to leave that life behind.Throughout the discussion, we highlight several key aspects of Unforgiven that make it a standout entry in the Western genre. We praise Eastwood's direction and performance, as well as the supporting cast, which includes Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, and Richard Harris. We also touch on the film's cinematography, which captures the stark beauty of the American West while also conveying a sense of danger and unease.Other Topics CoveredThe film's commentary on the mythologizing of the American WestThe moral ambiguity of the characters and their actionsThe role of women in the Western genreThe film's place within Eastwood's larger body of work as a director and actorA Western for the AgesUltimately, we conclude that Unforgiven is a masterful example of the Western genre and a film that continues to resonate with audiences over three decades after its release. Through its nuanced exploration of complex themes and its subversion of traditional Western tropes, Unforgiven stands as a testament to Eastwood's skill as a filmmaker and his enduring legacy in American cinema. The play, inspired by true events but not explicitly marketed as such, caught the attention of Hollywood heavyweights, leading to the 1992 film adaptation directed by Rob Reiner.
