NEW ZEALAND! The Land of the Long White Cloud! WE MADE IT!!! This was one of the Smugglers most exciting and fulfulling touring destinations in our many years on the road and in the air. Shows were packed, songs were shouted, Kiwi friends and lovers made. All this even though Beez barely made it into the country despite our endless internal crossing-borders training.

Nicole Johnson is a badass in so many ways. She was the first female to land a backflip in competition IN A MONSTER TRUCK. She was the first woman to cross the finish line at King of Hammers; 2x Rockcrawling Champion; competed in short course off-road racing; holds the title for most racing wins by a Rookie in a single season of Monster Jam. Nicole educates us on how to stay off your roof; the crazy but-strangely-familiar technology is off-road brakes; how to backflip a monster truck; why the seat isn't comfortable; the unexpected difficulty driving a certain automatic transmission, and more! Now she's got a YouTube show called "Nicole Johnson's Detour' where she drives everything from rare classics, fast Datsuns, a V12 cab-over truck, ultra-wide MGs, 1200HP VW Beetles, and Magnus Walker's 911s. https://www.nicolejohnsonsdetour.com/Check out her show: https://www.youtube.com/@NicoleJohnsonsDetour Recorded December 18, 2023 Want your question answered? You never know what—or who—you'll run into in the aisles. In this episode, Derek talks to Jacob from the YouTube channel Puddin's Fab Shop. Hear Jacob discuss his journey from jet engine mechanic to “I wasn't cut out for customer service.” He talks about his work on Datsuns, box trucks and Internationals, his dream of owning a '64 Impala Wagon, and his lying under a truck in a flash flood, bench-pressing a transmission into place. At which point, Derek and Jacob agree: wrenching in the rain is the worst. By Erin EddyEvery heavy music punter in Melbourne knows The Tote. It has incubated and hosted some of this country's biggest acts, such as King Parrot, Amyl & The Sniffers, Magic Dirt, The Beasts Of Bourbon, The Datsuns, The Hard Ons, Mudhoney, The White Stripes and the list goes on.The building itself is 152 years old, but has been operating as a live music venue since 1981. If you'll allow me to do the maths for you, that's 41 years of punk, rock and metal marinated into the walls of this iconic structure. In recent months, The Tote has been put on the market; not simply the business but the entire building. It has a hefty price tag of 6.6 million dollars, and unsurprisingly the Melbourne music community is extremely nervous that we're about to witness the demise of one of the city's most important hubs for rock and roll. The heroes of this story are power couple Shane and Leanne, who have been at the helm of another legendary Melbourne music venue, The Last Chance Rock & Roll Bar, for around eight years now. They have embarked on a quest which they have titled “The Last Chance To Save The Tote!”Shane and Leanne have dedicated their entire adult lives to working in and running venues and they eat, sleep and breathe the city's live music scene.Shane says The Tote is a venue he has wanted to own and run for 20 years, and has been waiting for his chance to swoop in. But he was never expecting that when finally, his chance arose, that the sale would include the actual building itself, and therefore was not prepared for the price tag associated with that.“I've wanted to run The Tote forever,” Shane told HEAVY, “simply because I love going to The Tote!”“We knew that at some stage it would come up for sale, but we were kind of blindsided by the fact that the entire building was up for sale and the price that's on it… it's not doable.”Shane isn't exactly the type of person to let pesky finances deter him from a crusade to save this venue, however.Together, he and Leanne and the patronage of The Last Chance Rock & Roll Bar have begun a crusade to raise funds for half of the asking price of the building, in a bid to save it from falling into the hands of developers, who Shane fears will convert this piece of history into “shitty apartments.”“With a six-million-dollar price tag, it's unattainable for someone who is passionate about music,” Shane laments. He's calling upon the Australian music community to rally and attempt to achieve the seemingly impossible and ensure magical music moments continue to take seed within the walls of The Tote. The deadline is this Thursday April 6 th .“The time is now,” Shane says. “Don't protect the walls, protect what happens within those walls. If we're going to let our most important venue die because some shitty investor has lots of money and they want to build apartments, then we can't claim to be the live music capital of the world.”If Shane and Leanne are successful at obtaining The Tote, the first thing they're going to do is put the building in trust, so that it remains untouchable and a live music mecca forever.Shane is one of the most enthusiastic, passionate, salt of the earth people we at HEAVY have had the pleasure of speaking with and his bid to save The Tote is nothing short of admirable. Please listen to our interview to get the scoop straight from the horse's mouth, then make sure you hit up www.facebook.com/thelastchancerockandrollbar for updates on the campaign, and more importantly, to make a donation. No money pledged will be taken from your bank account until the start of May, and donations will only be extracted IF the guys are successful at meeting their target. So pledge today, you have nothing to lose, and can be a part of Melbourne music history if the target is met.The Last Chance Rock & Roll Bar is also hosting a pledge drive spectacular this Monday the 3 rd and Tuesday the 4 th of April, which will be live streamed via YouTube, with some of the industry's most well known musicians getting involved.
Join the Third Men Podcast this week as we explore the history of women in music, from the Indie Rock boom until the present day, with an episode we had to call: Women, Rock & Detroit. Joining your humble co-hosts are three special guests, each offering their own unique perspective on the triumphs, struggles and perceptions of female representation in music. Offering up a boots-on-the-ground view at the Detroit scene experience is the legendary Marcie Bolen, known for her work across many bands through Detroit & beyond such as The Von Bondies, The Datsuns and Seger Liberation Army. Next up is record industry executive (across many different labels), as well as hip-hop solo artist Lady Tee the Difference, who shares her journey rising through the ranks of the music industry and carving her own path in the process. Finally, returning guest Kate McCoy details her point of view as a music fan, detailing experiences as a woman attending concerts, frequenting record stores, and learning music inspired by bands like The White Stripes. It's an essential conversation you don't want to miss, and we hope you all enjoy this deep-dive exploration! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Seven years is a long time in music, especially in terms of public expectation, but when a band plays rock as well as New Zealand outfit The Datsuns seven years is just a prolonged gap between one slab of rock goodness and the next.At the turn of the century, The Datsuns were seemingly everywhere, on both the local and national touring circuit, with overseas festival slots at places like Ozzfest part of a days work for their rising rock star.Although not fading from the scene altogether, changing climates grabbed hold of the juggernaut, reeling them back into a pack that was growing by the day and forcing them to almost re-establish themselves in a market they once dominated. Now, after the release of their latest album Eye To Eye, The Datsuns have picked up from the same rockpool they left seven years ago, with the same swagger and intensity they left us with.Guitarist Phil Somervell joined HEAVY to talk about the new release earlier this week."So far the reception has been real positive," he enthused, "real supportive which has been great. It's only been four or five days but that's nice. The process of it took us a while - it's been seven years since our last record - and the writing took a while to complete but now that is out it doesn't seem like it's been that long! Even though it's been a gap of seven years there was moments when we thought we would never finish it"After leaving fans waiting so long for new material, Somervell stresses the band didn't approach Eye To Eye with a set game plan, more so their only point of attack was to keep the songs and music true to their musical soul."The only focus was to finish ideas really," he shrugged. "We just made all of the songs and made sure all of us were happy with them. Whoever came up with the original idea for it we made sure they achieved what they wanted. We didn't really put too much thought into how it was gonna go down or how other people might perceive it. I guess we've always been like that, trying to make records for ourselves and then if it goes well, it goes well but if not we are still happy with the product."In the full interview, Phil talks more about the musical direction of Eye To Eye, the comparisons being bandied around to classic bands, the album cover, what happened to bring them back to the pack earlier this century, playing music from the soul and more.

This week: Neapolitan ice screamery from The Devils, Afro-Asiatic anime beats from Flying Lotus and bourbon-and-bank-robbery delta blues from the Black Keys. Also: drug cocktails, sick riffs, deliberately using the most mellow track from the album as a drop to make your cohost's opinions look vaguely ridiculous, late night SBS B-movies, #DocReadsLabelBios, the Kevin Bacon of ‘90s-‘10s rock, narrator: he did not edit all that out, bank robbery enabling, the raw and the cooked, the Black Keys' big come up, the entire history of white rock 'n' roll, music to nod off at the wheel to, hanging up your sword because of some… unpleasantness, Blade Runner knockoffs, giving away the plot in the song title, Lynchian collabs, the Doc's favourite band of the past 20 years, non-Football non-Kingz, bootleg Drake art concepts and baseline controls. Next time by: new Australasian album sounds from the Datsuns, Kings and You Am I. Endlich, Camping geht wieder looooos! Die Rockband gibt es jetzt bereits 25 Jahren – was man beim frischen Sound vom neuen Song "Brain to Brain" kaum glauben mag. Jeans are not comfortable! There, we said it. Throughout April, Chris + Cassie have rested the well-worn jeans and everyone's happier as a result. More tracksuit pants. More pyjamas. (Cassie's have Jimmy Barnes' face on them). Dim the lights, light a candle and get around the 4 songs we feature this week. The Datsuns get name-checked twice, even Gaga manages to pop her head back in here somehow. But these songs are jams. And new music is the best. Thanks for listening.
Episode 12: We ramble on for way too long about supersonic airplanes, expensive Datsuns, and James May's quirks and features, all while offending both Porsche and Ferrari owners (and a good chunk of the European population).
A new season AND a new theme song, with drums recorded at a distant location by the amazing Cesar Molina at Cave Rec Studio in downtown Las Vegas. Besides telling the thrilling story of how this song came to be and whatnot, we also cover our heroes aimless wanderings both alone and eventually together, narrow escapes from shady apartment complexes, playing our first show together, what we thought of the movie Leviathan, local shopping malls, and even the Ramones. But that's not all! We also tell the uplifting tale of how the name Tall Toad came to be. Truly inspiring. We even throw in some wood grain drum sets, Datsuns that saved the day, Sean and Todd (if you haven't been listening to the show and don't know who these guys are, shame on you), and some good old fashioned ramblings. All for free!
Back in 2012, then-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn announced that the automaker would revive its Datsun brand more than 25 years after the iconic Japanese brand was originally phased out. Although you could still find the odd Datsun on U.S. roads, Ghosn wanted the name for a new line of low-cost vehicles targeting emerging markets — part of a larger goal of raising Nissan’s overall share of the global car market.Seven years later, Ghosn is facing criminal charges for alleged financial improprieties, Nissan’s profits are down, and the revived Datsun — now five years into production — is apparently taking market share from its parent company. As a result, Nissan’s new leadership is apparently planning to scrap the Datsun brand once again. Two company officials told Reuters that the brand would likely be a casualty of a broad recovery plan that would reverse Ghosn's expansion ambitions. The automaker is expected to cut production in many markets and abandon some versions of the Titan pickup.Plants in the countries originally targeted by the Datsun revival, the officials said, would likely be hit hardest as Nissan focuses on China and the U.S. The new Datsuns, Reuters noted, are made in Indonesia, India and Russia. The overall restructuring plan will likely be presented before the end of the month, although some final details are reportedly still being worked out.

If you’re of a certain age, like your three esteemed hosts, there’s a fair chance you’ve heard the name The Eighties Matchbox B-Live Disaster. The smashed their way into the music press with this, their debut album, and a reputation for chaotic, enthralling on stage antics that captured the attention of music lovers and press alike. They also happened to pop onto the scene at the same time as a bunch of scuzzy garage rock bands, of which they sound absolutely nothing like. They arrived with the plaudits and credibility that some of those bands, like The Datsuns or The D4, hadn’t really shown. What’s more, their sound was just weird compared to what was going on at the time. They turned up, kicked the shit out of everyone, and stuck around to watch the scene pick up the pieces and vanish into the distance. And their reputation certainly wasn’t harmed by their strange look, either. ‘Horse of the Dog’ heralded the arrival of a truly strange, unique band who would later go on to release a further two albums which saw them showcase the whole gamut of their weirdness, moving away from bluesy, gothic psychobilly, to punk n roll, scuzzy desert rock and eclectic psyche. On this episode Chris lays bare his adoration for the band, and we cover the band’s back cat, talk about some of the weird support slots they picked up over their career, do a potted history of psychobilly and much more. Is ‘Horse of the Dog’ the best 80s Matchbox album? Vote on our Facebook page.
An in-depth conversation with Paul Crowther. As "Emlyn Crowther" he was the drummer in Split Enz in the mid-70s, playing on the classic debut album, "Mental Notes". When he was kicked out of the band he took his tinkering electronics hobby a bit more seriously and created the "Hot Cake" guitar pedal. We talk through his life from the drums to guitar pedals and back, to live sound engineering for The Mutton Birds and many other acts and having The Datsuns write their most famous song ('Harmonic Generator') about one of his pedals. The Liberty Conspiracy, a clenched punk fist smashing into the face of the state and the hypocrites who support it and work for its ceaseless attacks on individual sovereignty. In this program (sponsored by Con-WOW!)we look at the shock the pop media have expressed about the current president's clearly unconstitutional, immoral and evil assassination program and his attacks on US and foreign civilians. No trial, no presentation of evidence. No presumption of innocence. Just death from above (not 1979 -- look up the band, good one). This is an intense program. We can see how quickly the system is unraveling. On a recent "Ed" show (you know, the dummy we exposed for his complete lack of understanding about how speculation in products actually helps keep their prices lower during times of dearth) Ed's production team posted a poll. 78% of those who responded thought it was acceptable for the US government to assassinate Americans without trial. We're in the minority. Things are unwinding rapidly. Get ready for bad mojo, kids. This program also features a discussion of a recent viral vid that shows a teenage girl in court, and how a bored judge slammed her for saying WORDS. Think about it. Was she convicted of a crime? Did she or did she not retain her right to free speech? What does that tell us about the unworkability of a courtroom and the consistency of government to "protect" speech rights when it chooses to block them when its agents don't like the language you use? With KICK ASS music by The Datsuns "Harmonic Generator", SHINING (Norway) "Fisheye", The Dead Boys "Sonic Reducer", The Prodigy "Baby's Got a Temper", The Prodigy "Spitfire", The Zulus "Directly from Our Hearts to Yours", Girls Against Boys "Rockets are Red", WIRE "Agfers of Kodack", and Tribe "Abort" - Buy them if you can and please remember, we rely on donations to keep our vast audio library out there to prove our points about freedom. Adam Carolla and Matt D'Andria talk about an upcoming road trip to Laguna Seca, where Adam will be racing his recently-acquired vintage "Fitzy" Datsun. The IMSA car was originally fielded by the late Jimmy Fitzgerald, a legendary racer of Bob Sharp-built Datsuns and Nissans. They round out the show by taking your car-related questions via facebook, twitter and even over the telephone.
Adam Carolla and Sandy Ganz and the CarCast crew (Donny) jump on an eastbound plane and head for Atlanta. The trip - Speedfest at the Classic Motorsports Mitty 2010 held at Road Atlanta, and this year Ace has a couple of cars down for the show. BRE and Datsun are the mark for the vintage race with many classic Datsuns in attendance. We chat with some great racers and enjoy conversation with a few folks while we toss back a beer. Then Ganz and Motorator Matt do some more hack job work on the ripper, only to find that one good hack job leads to another. Enjoy the show, and check the site for the many photos!
