We are playing The Between by Jason Cordova! The Between is a tabletop roleplaying game about a group of mysterious monster hunters in Victorian-era London. They are residents of a place called Hargrave House, and their job is to investigate and neutralize monstrous threats terrorizing the city—threats that Scotland Yard won't or can't handle themselves. As the story progresses, they become aware of the plans of a Moriarty-style criminal mastermind they will eventually have to face in order to save Queen and country. In this episode: Mr Singh struggles to restrain Lord Henning-Smit at the morgue. Ardent interrogates the ghost, but things get out of control. We complete our item creation. Dietary Requirements is The Spinoff’s monthly podcast in which we eat, drink and talk about it too, with special thanks to Freedom Farms. This month, we're beaming in from our respective bubbles, joined by Al Keating of Coffee Supreme.Although we can't be together in person, the Dietary Requirements team was not about to let a little nationwide lockdown get in the way of bringing you another episode, especially at a time when eating and drinking is basically all that's getting some of us through. We're joined on our Zoom pod by Al Keating, CEO of Coffee Supreme, to discuss the crippling effects of the Covid-19 crisis on the industry and whether cafes will be able to come back from it, plus Alice's obsessive longing for a flat white. We discuss our lockdown cooking go-tos, ponder why the hell we're so hungry all the time, and think about all the fine establishments we're going to hit up when lockdown's over.Plus, Alice introduces a new family member, and Simon raps some Hairy Maclary (as you do). Most parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles know of Hairy Maclary. For the uninitiated, Hairy is a fictitious dog who lives at a dairy and embarks on adventures with his friends. Each story is playfully illustrated, written in rhythmic verse and begs the reader to deliver each page with theatrical enthusiasm.I owe a great deal to New Zealand author Dame Lynley Dodd, the creator of this great character. An embarrassing realisationMy introduction to Hairy Maclary took place when our eldest daughter was a small number of months old. Until that point, I had been winging it. As clumsily as one could, I had been making my way through our story time routine using stilted and stutter-filled language. It didn’t seem to matter until one day our daughter looked up at me when I tripped over a simple phrase, again and again. The look on her face said, ‘what’s wrong?’Filled with shame, I had no response.Keep listening or read the full post here.**************Thanks for listening. What is the place on our stages and in public life for performers who don’t fit the conventional view of what an artist should be? In the past, ‘natural born freaks’ were the stars of sideshow performances, but this is now buried as the embarrassing past. Why should we ignore this history of performers with disability? And if we do, how can we celebrate the unique artistry of those who are different, who are ‘freaks like me’? Sarah Houbolt is an accomplished international circus and physical theatre performer, trained in aerials, acrobatics and hula hoop. By day she works at Accessible Arts in Sydney, and by night she is KooKoo the Birdgirl. Her show reel consists of everything from Cirque du Soleil to corporate aerials to starring as Hairy Maclary in children's theatre. Sarah loves bed of nails, angle grinding and blockhead. Sarah worked with Sideshow Wonderland at Adelaide Fringe 2015, and has created a one-woman show based on KooKoo the Birdgirl, a character from the controversial film Freaks (1932).
