This week Erik and Aidan discuss the most controversial player in tennis, Nick Kyrgios. Known for his antics on and off the court, Kyrgios burst onto the scene around 2015 displaying incredible talent and taking out top opponents in big matches. However, talent can only take you so far, and Kyrgios has displayed huge amounts of inconsistency over the course of his career. He has played at tennis' biggest stage, the Wimbledon final, but has never truly been a next-level player, peaking at a ranking just outside the top 10. With all the talent in the world, Kyrgios may truly be the biggest what-if in tennis history. The master does nothing .... yet he leaves nothing undone. In Episode #503 of 'Meanderings', Juan & I discuss: why the mindset of mastery may matter more than the title of “master", Robert Greene's book called Mastery, the role of obsession, whether teaching is required for mastery, “unearned” mastery and savant talent and a pragmatic take on how to design your own path toward improvement without sacrificing what matters most. This week we sat down with Jody Maginley, a professional doubles tennis player and co-founder of The Changeover Podcast, one of the fastest-growing shows in tennis.Jody takes us from growing up in Antigua (population ~90k) with limited access to high-level tennis, to navigating US college and chasing points and paychecks on the pro tour. We get into the realities most fans never see; money, logistics, late-night travel and tough losses, and how that experience pushed him to build a platform that shines a spotlight on players outside the Grand Slam bubble.Topics we get into:What it takes to go pro coming from a small island nation.Wild tour stories from life on the road. Why the US College tennis system still has major gaps.Jody´s motivation for setting up The Changeover Podcast. How the show went from zero views to interviewing names like Kyrgios & Tsitsipas.Early-stage podcast growing pains (production, consistency, distribution)How Jody funds his tennis career. We debate whether doubles gets enough respect from singles players. The mindsets, role models, and motivations that keep him improvingLinks Mentioned in this Episode:Check out Jody´s show The Changeover PodcastListen to the CTC guests discussed in this episode: Denmark´s August Holmgren, Pat Cash & Sir Andy MurrayFollow Control the Controllables on Instagram & YouTubeControl the Controllables is Hiring! We´re offering a university student the chance to spend their placement year working on the Control the Controllables Podcast here in Spain. It's a packed Monday on Nothing Major. The guys kick things off with the upcoming Battle of the Sexes in Dubai — plenty of curiosity (and a little doubt) about how seriously Kyrgios will take it. Djokovic's 101st career title takes center stage next, with the crew debating his decision to skip the year-end finals and what it means for the tour. There's also a shoutout to Learner Tien's title run in Metz and Venus Williams grabbing a wildcard into Auckland at 45 — still swinging. Then it's time for an ATP Finals breakdown, as we all agree one group is stronger than the other. On the WTA side, Elena Rybakina caps her season with record prize money and a clear message for 2026. To wrap things up, two teases you don't want to miss: Maldives Watch and the mission to help Danielle Collins find a husband. ----------------- 00:00 Intro 00:36 Battle of the Sexes: Sabalenka vs. Kyrgios 03:15 Novak Djokovic's Home Victory 09:35 Learner Tien's Breakthrough Year 14:19 Venus Williams' Wild Card Entry 14:52 Speculations on Player Participation 15:33 Breaking News: Sebastian Korda's Engagement 15:38 ATP Finals Overview 16:07 Shelton vs. Zverev Match Analysis 18:27 Alcaraz's Performance at ATP Finals 21:57 WTA Finals Recap 25:42 Upcoming Topics and Teasers 27:45 Goodbye!

The post-US Open stretch is always a little strange. Case in point, Lleyton Hewitt was suspended for two weeks because he pushed an anti-doping official last year(?!). Jacob Fearnley beat Nick Kyrgios in straight sets on Monday, leaving the Australian questioning whether he would ever play singles at the Australian Open ever again. In his first-round match, Novak Djokovic, now coached by former rival Andy Murray, overcame a challenging start to defeat 19-year-old American Nishesh Basavareddy. After losing the first set, Djokovic rallied to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, marking the beginning of his pursuit for an 11th Australian Open title and a record 25th major title. Stefanos Tsitsipas, seeded 11th, was eliminated in the first round by American Alex Michelsen. Michelsen secured the victory with a 7-5, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win, marking a significant upset in the men's singles draw. Returning mother Belinda Bencic is back, beating Jelena Ostapenko in straights to catapult her up the rankings from 421 in the world And finally, legendary rugby player Sonny Bill Williams appeared on Court 6 - and it turns out he is coaching Australian wildcard James McCabe. The Australian Open has begun and boy has it been a dramatic star down under! Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev scrape past Wild Cards to make the second round. This marks the first win for Novak Djokovic with new coach Sir Andy Murray in his box. The team got the win but it was't pretty or easy for the GOAT of tennis and his former nemesis. Elsewhere there was an EMPHATIC win for teenage sensation and ATP Next Gen Finals winner, 18 year old Joao Fonseca as he ousted Andrey Rublev in straight sets. Will he be the next Gustavo Kuerten? Joining Rublev crashing out of the AO2025 were Stefanos Tsitsipas, Grigor Dimitrov. It wasn't just the young guns that had success Gael Monfils and Kei Nishikori rolled back the years to win in 5 sets and both are in the mid to late 30s, proving there is life in the old dogs yet! On the women's side the top seeds were serene in their progress. Two time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka cruised past grand slam champion Sloane Stephens and Coco Gauff matched her effort in downing former champ Sofia Kenin in R1. Other notable wins came from Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek who won in straight sets to move through to round 2. We're catching you up on the barely existent off-season, including the most important Joaos, Max Purcell turning himself in, and Jenson Broosky's brave statement about autism. Even though one of us rejects any “2025” tennis that occurs before January 1, 2025, we talk through the season's early results, including the United Cup fracas, the Opelka and Nishikori comebacks, and the shifting Big 4 allegiances due to the Murravic pairing. We also take on the decidedly more serious situation with Elena Rybakina's former and would-be current coach, Stefano Vukov, who is currently under investigation by the WTA.
