A lieutenant in the Australian Imperial Force during the First World War, Towner was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on 1 September 1918, during an attack on Mont St. Quentin on the Western Front.Born in Queensland to a farming family, Towner enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in 1915. Posted to the transport section of the 25th Battalion, he served in Egypt until his unit was sent to the Western Front. He then transferred to the 2nd Machine Gun Battalion where he was commissioned as a lieutenant and twice mentioned in despatches for his leadership. During June 1918, Towner led a machine gun section in attack near Morlancourt and assisted the infantry in reaching its objectives under heavy fire, for which he was awarded the Military Cross. In September, again commanding a machine gun section, he was involved in the Allied counteroffensive that broke the German lines at Mont St. Quentin and Péronne. Fighting for thirty hours after being wounded, his "conspicuous bravery, initiative and devotion to duty" earned him the Victoria Cross, which was presented by King George V in April 1919.Discharged in August, Towner returned to Australia. He was appointed a director of the Russleigh Pastoral Company, and briefly re-enlisted during the Second World War, when he was promoted to major. A keen geographer, he was awarded the Dr Thomson Foundation Gold Medal in 1956 for his geographical work. Quiet Time Coaching Episode 480 | New Thing Series — Part 35 | “Daniel's Prayers - Part 2” | Malcolm Cox Introduction A new thing! I'm Malcolm Cox. Welcome to your daily devotional podcast anchored in Isaiah 43:19: 'See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.' We are currently looking at God doing a new thing in the life of Daniel. Today we explore Daniel's prayers - part 2. “Although Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he continued to go to his house, which had windows in its upper room open toward Jerusalem, and to get down on his knees three times a day to pray to his God and praise him, just as he had done previously.” (Daniel 6:10 NRSV) Daniel's Prayer Courage Daniel is conscious of the risks. he knows that, “whoever prays to anyone, divine or human, for thirty days, except to you, O king, shall be thrown into a den of lions.” (Daniel 6:7 NRSV) Daniel is aware that people will be watching him. But he sticks to his predictable schedule, and keeps the windows open. “He does not court martyrdom, but when disaster threatens he remains steady:”  Towner, Interpretation, 83.   It is significant that the threat of doom does not make Daniel more religious, but that he simply continues with his wholehearted devotion.  This is a man whose habit is to be fully committed.   Why Jerusalem? Jerusalem, to the readers, is not only a holy city with a significant past, but it is about the future.  To not turn towards Jerusalem would be to admit there was no vision, no future, no hope.  Daniel cannot countenance such a thing because he knows his God and that there is always hope, there is always a future.   For Reflection Sometimes the worst time to pray is the best time to pray. Take the example of Jonah, “Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the belly of the fish, saying, “I called to the LORD out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice.” (Jonah 2:1-2 NRSV) I imagine I would've been scrambling around in the stinky, claustrophobic darkness looking for a way out of the fish. Instead, Jonah prays. Or what about the example of Jesus: “Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” Having said this, he breathed his last.” (Luke 23:46 NRSV) Conclusion I hope you find your heart, your life, your congregation and your world inspired by God doing a new thing. Bible Study Don't just take our word for it . . . take His! We would encourage you to spend time examining the following Scriptures that shaped this sermon: . Sermon Notes From Genesis 1 and 2, we learn that men and women together, in partnership, are called by God to bear his image and carry out his purposes in the world. They are equal but have different, complementary strengths and roles. Two interpretations of 1 Timothy 2:12 - “I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.” This is a universal teaching for the church in every place and every time. It restricts women from serving in positions of leadership which exercise authority through teaching and preaching (typically a pastor/sr. pastor). Strengths – straightforward reading of the text, even if unpopular. Emphasizes the complementarity of men and women from Genesis 2. Weaknesses – hard to be consistent in application. Some churches are overly restrictive, going beyond the Bible's teaching. Others are minimally restrictive - only restricting women from serving as a senior pastor or a bishop. It does not apply to all churches in every place. Therefore women can serve in positions of leadership, including as senior pastors who preach and teach. This interpretation is reached by examining the cultural situation in Ephesus. Strengths – emphasizes the equality of men and women from Genesis 1. Takes cultural background research seriously. Weaknesses – hard to reconstruct cultural situation. Conclusions can often be speculative. Sometimes this interpretation applies the background of the text, rather than the actual words. Background study is not normally meant to overturn the plain reading of the text, but to provide nuance and depth. We know this from numerous other passages where Paul clearly teaches that salvation is by grace through faith in the finished work of Christ. Paul may be referring back to Genesis 3 and the consequences of the fall for Eve/women which was pain in childbirth. He may also be responding to false teaching from the ancient sexual revolution which devalued marriage and motherhood. Whether we come from a more traditional perspective or we have been influenced by the feminist movement, the Bible offers a more beautiful and profound story about men and women as an expression of God's creative glory. Application 2 – God's mission requires that men and women served together in partnership to advance the kingdom. Even if there is a restriction on women from serving in particular leadership roles (and there may not be depending on interpretation), the contributions, gifts, and leadership of women is essential for the mission. Sermon Application Explain equality and complementarity between men and women from Genesis 1&2 in your own words. What is your background with women serving as pastors in the church? Has your mind changed over time? Where do you base your beliefs? What does it look like to treat other churches with a different interpretation than yours with charity and humility? Has your gender kept you from offering your gifts and leadership in the local church?

Something a bit different this week; what with the shop moving and all! This is the first of, hopefully, many more episodes of On the Road with Sven. This year's event saw a healthy attendance with the Milwaukee weather cooperating beautifully showcasing what is great about Milwaukee in the Spring. Temps were in the high 60's to low 70's. In his liner note for At First Light, Ralph Towner writes of the singularity of having most of his life's work at one record label. He's been an ECM artist for more than fifty years, appearing in many different contexts, one of the most important being a run of solo recordings which began with Diary in 1973. After two murders in Canada, many outfit changes, visits to several towns, an attempt to cross the border back into the US, and an actual town mob hunting him down, he is apprehended by authorities. Although he has committed dozens of murders, he is only tried for the final two attributed to him.
