We meet Ekow Eshun, leading curator, writer and broadcaster to discuss his new book The Strangers. In the western imagination, a Black man is always a stranger. Outsider, foreigner, intruder, alien. One who remains associated with their origins irrespective of how far they have travelled from them. One who is not an individual in their own right but the representative of a type. What kind of performance is required for a person to survive this condition? And what happens beneath the mask?In answer, Ekow Eshun conjures the voices of five very different men. Ira Aldridge: nineteenth century actor and playwright. Matthew Henson: polar explorer. Frantz Fanon: psychiatrist and political philosopher. Malcolm X: activist leader. Justin Fashanu: million-pound footballer. Each a trailblazer in his field. Each haunted by a sense of isolation and exile. Each reaching for a better future.Ekow Eshun tells their stories with breathtaking lyricism and empathy, capturing both the hostility and the beauty they experienced in the world. And he locates them within a wider landscape of Black art, culture, history and politics which stretches from Africa to Europe to North America and the Caribbean. As he moves through this landscape, he maps its thematic contours and fault lines, uncovering traces of the monstrous and the fantastic, of exile and escape, of conflict and vulnerability, and of the totemic central figure of the stranger.Described as a ‘cultural polymath', Ekow Eshun has been at the heart of international creative culture for several decades, curating exhibitions, authoring books, presenting documentaries and chairing high-profile lectures. His work stretches the span of identity, style, masculinity, art and culture. Ekow rose to prominence as a trailblazer in British culture. He was the first Black editor of a major magazine in the UK (Arena Magazine in 1997) and continued to break ground as the first Black director of a major arts organisation, the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London (2005-2010).As Chairman of the commissioning group for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, he leads one of the world's most famous public art projects. In July 2022, Ekow curated In the Black Fantastic at the Hayward Gallery in London a landmark exhibition of visionary Black artists exploring myth, science fiction and Afrofuturism. His most recent exhibition, The Time Is Always Now, is a landmark study of the Black figure and its representation in contemporary art. The show opened at the National Portrait Gallery, London and is travelling to multiple venues in the USA, including The Philadelphia Museum of Art.Eshun's writing has appeared in publications including the New York Times, Financial Times, The Guardian, The Observer, Esquire and Wired. Back in April 2011, Saad Mohseni was made one of Time's 100 most influential people in the world. And who exactly is that, you might ask. I have to admit I hadn't heard of him either. But as Rupert Murdoch wrote about Mohseni for that Time award, “he's the best-informed person in the world about Afghanistan”. Mohseni, in fact, is the Afghan version of Murdoch (without the wives & nasty right-wing politics). Even today, with the Taliban back in power, Mohseni remains amongst Afghanistan's most influential media moguls. And he writes about all this in Radio Free Afghanistan, a memoir focusing on what he calls his “twenty-year struggle for an independent voice in Kabul”. Important stuff about a country that needs to be remembered in the West rather than conveniently forgotten.Described by the Asia Society as a ‘Game Changer', Saad Mohseni has built a reputation as a dynamic and innovative entrepreneur. As Chairman and Chief Executive of MOBY GROUP, Saad has been widely applauded for his role in advancing press freedom, empowering civil society and defending women's rights. Time Magazine recognized him in 2011 as one of the 100 most influential people in the world, while in 2013, Foreign Policy magazine named him among 100 Global Thinkers. In 2016, he was featured in the Business Insider 100 “The Creators” list, and recognized by the BBC as one of 10 men globally championing gender equality. Saad currently serves on the boards of the International Crisis Group (ICG) and the Washington DC-based International Center for Journalists (ICFJ). One of four children of an Afghan diplomat, Saad spent his early years in the United Kingdom, Kabul, Islamabad and Tokyo, before emigrating to Melbourne, Australia.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. In an interview we had especially looked forward to, and with the Credit Suisse acquisition behind us, the MMP went to Zurich to talk to Colm Kelleher. Described as one of the most influential and capable banking executives of the last several decades, he has been dubbed by the FT as 'Europe's most powerful banker'. As Chairman of the UBS board, he helps manage an organisation with approximately $5.7 trillion in assets, employing 112,000 people. After discussing the early forces that shaped him, he explains why he realised US banks were better placed to outgun their UK rivals, why he joined Morgan Stanley, and the journey to CFO and President. He discusses the brutal intensity of fighting to keep Morgan Stanley alive from following Lehman, and the emotional scars it left. Colm describes the attraction of UBS, the preparation that made the Credit Suisse deal work in such an orderly manner as well as the business, the brand, and its position today. He explains what culture means to him, Europe's position in financial services, disintermediation, and the likely shape of banking going forward and why banks shouldn't seek to be entrepreneurial. The Money Maze Podcast is kindly sponsored by Schroders, IFM Investors and the World Gold Council. Prior to this role, he was the first Black officer in American history to head one of our military branches as Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force. Time Magazine has named him one of the top 100 most influential people in the world. Effective leaders discover how to best use their strengths, and of course, champion the strengths of others. In this conversation, General Brown and I discuss ow he uses his strengths and how he brings those strengths into people development, high-level meetings, and problem-solving. Key Points If you are well below average at something, don't spend time and effort trying to improve. Instead, partner with others who have it as a superpower. Give people work that is aligned with their strengths. Fight for feedback, especially in a top job. Find people who will give it to you straight. Listen well so they keep offering it. Leverage your strengths in communication. For General Brown, using his engineering training to solve problems and using metaphors and analogies to create clarity. Have the meeting after the meeting in the meeting. Tell people where your strengths might get in the way. For General Brown, highlighting that silence that could appear intimidating is often him just listening and thinking. Among other roles, I served as Senior Deputy Controller of the Currency earlier in my career. Most relevant to my current position, I was Chairman and CEO of BancWest Corporation and Bank of the West. As Chairman of Bank of the West, I helped oversee its acquisition and integration into the Bank of Montreal in 2023. I hope my experience will help me serve our shareholders, customers, and employees as an effective leader during this important period."Despite the challenging economic circumstances stated in their earning call, Discover Financial Services has displayed stability in Q1 2024. Data from the earnings report shows a decline in net income from the previous year. However, after accounting for unique factors such as an efficiency ratio under 36% and the card misclassification remediation reserve increase, a more nuanced insight suggests the company's net income could be a higher $915 million. The company reported growth in certain sectors. An 11% increase in card receivables and a substantial 21% surge in personal loans echo the company's continuing appeal to its customers. Furthermore, the PULSE debit network witnessed a 21% increase in debit volume, and average deposits experienced an 18% year-on-year increase. In the earnings call, they also acknowledged changing consumer trends and the impact of economic conditions. Reduced spending by lower-income households due to inflation and an increased leaning towards debt consolidation in personal loans indicate shifts in consumer behavior. Forecasting a flat to slightly negative sales growth in 2024, Discover is mindfully navigating these challenges. As per the discussion by the company in the earnings call, Discover's strategic plans are geared toward risk management, compliance programs, and a prospective merger with Capital One. The company reaffirmed its commitment to assisting customers in achieving their financial goals, contributing to community commitments, and positioning itself as a competitive player in the payments industry. Tom Bodrovics welcomes back once again, Dr. Stephen Leeb of Leeb Capital Management to discuss China's overall growth and the geopolitical impact. Leeb articulates his perspective that the recent slump in China's stocks has minimal effect on its general economy, albeit it may discourage some foreign investment. He argues that China's economic model takes a different approach, focusing largely on knowledge generation and innovation rather than relying heavily on financial markets. A Nature report indicates China surpassing the US in general scientific achievement for the first time, showing the country's advancements in technology. The report singles out China's long-term investment focus as the source of their success, drawing a parallel with Western countries' emphasis on short-term outcomes. Looking at the education backgrounds of top tech company heads, they are often originally from Asia, with examples illustrating that they have the capability to transform industries. A shift in corporate focus is observable, as evident with Microsoft's transition from PCs to the cloud. Yet, a clear concern is expressed regarding the growing disconnect between corporate heads and their employee base, possibly leading to classism issues. Dr. Leeb calls attention to the United States' current condition, making comparisons to China's technological advancement. He voices concerns about societal upheaval due to significant inequalities and a lack of unified mission, cautioning about events like the Civil War. Despite these issues, he remains optimistic, emphasizing the strength of American democratic values. Dr. Leeb explains his views on gold as a significant store of value over other assets. He challenges conventional financial wisdom with his argument that gold has proven to be a reliable safeguard during periods of instability, even though renowned financiers such as Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett disagree. A worldwide crisis is stressed as money unduly influences science. International cooperation is suggested as the key for global progress. He emphasizes China's defensive strategy in conflicts as a model, and strongly advocates for gold as a spiritual value and balance to materialism. Despite a critique of systems like Bitcoin, he expresses hope that future generations will appreciate the balance offered by gold. If you have solutions to those problems, bring them too. What you learn when running your business, is only going to help you in your philanthropic giving. Creating money and gathering stuff for yourself is not going to take you very far. You can't take it with you when you go - what are you going to do with the money you've earned? Start to recognize when you are playing small and when you're only playing not to lose, not to win.   "Be your big self. Believe in the dreams that you're inspired to envision. And don't let anybody tell you you can't. Anybody that tells you you can't is not worth listening to. It's time for you to step up, be your biggest self, and make this world a better place in the best way that you possibly can." —  Rob Follows About Rob Follows - Founder and Chairman:Rob's purpose and passion is to help entrepreneurial business owners achieve maximum value when the right time comes to sell. On November 15, 2022, it is estimated that for the first time Earth's population exceeded 8 billion humans. But what is Earth's sustainable carrying capacity of humans? Dr. Christopher Tucker is the Chairman of the American Geographic Society and author of the book “A Planet of 3 Billion.” He believes that we have far exceeded a sustainable number of humans on the planet and says that we are headed toward a catastrophic outcome if we don't start significantly reducing the overall population of the planet by the end of the century. In this interview, Dr. Tucker shares why the education and empowerment of young women and girls is the key to reducing global population to a more manageable carrying capacity. He talks about how we can avoid catastrophe by “shrinking to abundance,” how leaders should be thinking about global population and a future that may not be incented by growth, and he gives his very candid, critical assessment of people and countries that say we need to continue growing Earth's population. He finishes the interview by talking about the mistakes we are making today that the people of 2073 will look back at in disbelief. Dr. Christopher Tucker has spent the last two decades at the intersection of technology, strategy, geography and national security as an innovator, investor, social entrepreneur, author, and strategic advisor to the US national security community. As Chairman of the American Geographical Society, he launched a multi-year strategic dialog known as Geography2050, focused on the vital trends that will reshape the geography of our planet over the coming decades. He has served on a wide variety of public sector, corporate, and non-profit boards. He holds a BA, MA, and PhD from Columbia University. His passion for geography and the fate of future generations animates this work.

As Chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology, Congressman Frank Lucas is passionate about strengthening STEM in America. We sat down with the Chairman to talk about the vast technological advances taking place in the U.S. thanks to bipartisan efforts in the Committee, legislation like the CHIPS and Science Act, and the growth of STEM programs in schools today.Through all that progress, there is still work to be done inspiring and equipping the next generation of technologists to fill high-demand careers across every sector of the economy. Hear about the incredible opportunities for today's students, and better understand where STEM education can meet the growing needs of the skilled workforce.3 Big Takeaways from this episode:Don't underestimate agriculture - precision ag is a high-tech field! Having grown up on a fifth-generation family farm in Oklahoma, Frank Lucas has watched agriculture transform tremendously in the last few decades. Today, precision agriculture is a high-tech industry, utilizing satellite networks, drone technology, autonomous vehicles, smart sensors, data analytics and a host of precision machinery.Jobs are going wasted because companies don't have people to fill them; that's where STEM education can help: As technology drives every sector of the economy forward, jobs are becoming higher-skilled but don't necessarily require a four-year degree. Hands-on STEM education, especially delivered in career and technical education programs and community colleges, is a cost-effective way to equip learners to work in these jobs.Research and development around next generation technologies are moving us farther, faster: From nuclear fusion, to high-tech weather prediction technology, to countless new drone applications...technology is evolving at faster rate than ever before. In many ways, it's an exciting time to be in STEM. But there's a lot more work to be done educating students and preparing future generations to keep America moving forward. ResourcesLearn more about organizations featured in this episode:House Committee on Science, Space and TechnologyLearn more about Congressman LucasConnect with the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology:YouTube  |  Facebook  |  TwitterEpisode page: https://techedpodcast.com/lucas/Instagram - Facebook - YouTube - TikTok - Twitter - LinkedIn

Tom recently had the pleasure of chatting with Dr. Stephen Leeb about ICAG (Inflation, Commodities and Gold) and how it can help us look forward into the medium to long term. Steve believes that the US has reached a point of inflection and resources are becoming increasingly scarce, sparking an important discussion about the distribution of resources across the world. He argues that the principles of freedom of thought and equality outlined in the Declaration of Independence are still relevant today and should be the foundation for a successful future. Steve went on to talk about the Black experience in the 50s and 60s, stressing the importance of everyone having the essentials of life and not defining equality as money and material things. He also mentioned how America is now a materialistic society and how this is dangerous, and how we need to focus on sustainability and humanity. Steve then discussed the slowdown in technology since the tech stock boom in 2000 and how gold is the only thing that is suited for a monetary system. He believes that gold has magical qualities and is the only thing that can bring back equality and progress in the world. Steve also spoke about the Milgram experiments and how some people believe that Asians and Russians are more susceptible to obeying authority, but he argued that this is not the case. He then explained how the US has lost the belief of equality and how Elon Musk is an example of someone who believes in free speech and equality. He believes that for the US to move forward, it must recreate the belief in equality and sustainability that was present in the 1950s and 1960s. He then discussed how the US should become an ally to the BRICS nations and how the war in Ukraine has changed the relationship between Russia and China. He also believes that success is going to be measured by our ability to come together as a species and develop renewable energies. In conclusion, Steve emphasizes the importance of returning to a Jeffersonian Democracy and of understanding what is sacred to America. He believes that the only way to move forward is to accept everyone's differences and work together to achieve peace and harmony. On this episode of the Lead With Purpose podcast host, Tze Ching Yeung talks to Bruce Rockowitz about money as Bruce is an incredibly successful CEO, businessman and philathopist KEY TAKEAWAYS At 5-years-old, for whatever reason, I was always entrepreneurial. I started off selling flower seeds door-to door where I lived for two years. That was the beginning of my business career and from that age onwards I worked. At the same time, I started playing tennis and became a professional player, the work I did paid for my tennis career and tennis brought me to Hong Kong as a teenager where I was offered a job at the Hong Kong Country Club which served some very wealthy clients. I thought I'd go back to college in America but so many opportunities opened up here with China opening up in the early 80s. I eventually set up Colby which allowed major brands and retailers to bring their supply chain to the Far East, I became head of the group and the rest is history. My success didn't come about because I was driven by money, I have something inside my body that wants to excel. I always had an incredible passion to do well. If somebody gave me $1 million it would have had the opposite effect and destroyed my career, it would have made me lazy and I could rely on the money. I didn't want anyone to ever give me anything because I wanted to remain hungry and passionate.  I'm not very materialistic, I don't spend a lot of money on myself – it might not look that way from the outside. All money does is give me choices. What I'm really into is experiences, I'm willing to pay a lot of money for experiences. I'm not willing to pay a lot of money for things that just sit idle. Most entrepreneurs are born entrepreneurs, I was, my parents never pushed me to do anything. A parent that does push, it ends up backfiring. For somebody to be successful you need to find out what they're passionate about and help them, and it may not be making money, it could be artistic. There's a path for everybody, it's just a question of finding it. BEST MOMENTS‘I was unusual, I worked in fashion so I acquired a taste level, most businessmen have no taste, designers have taste. I was able to bridge both sides.'‘Money gives you choices, it gives you freedom but it doesn't make you happier.'‘I haven't needed to work since my late 20s, so my whole life hasn't been about necessity… The idea of retirement is pretty scary for me because my career and every business I start is what excites me.'‘An affluent home is a curse. Lots of people get screwed up in affluent homes.' ABOUT THE GUESTBruce Rockowitz is the President of Li & Fung (Trading) Ltd, the principal operating subsidiary of the Li & Fung Group. Bruce has also been an Executive Director of Li & Fung since 2001. Bruce was also the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Colby International Limited, a large Hong Kong buying agent prior to the sale of Colby to Li & Fung in 2000. He is a member of the Advisory Board for the Wharton's Jay H Baker Retailing Initiative, an industry centre for retail at the University of Pennsylvania.  In addition to his position at Li & Fung, Bruce is the Chairman of the Pure Group, a lifestyle, fitness and yoga group operating in Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan and soon to be opening in mainland China. As Chairman of Pure, Bruce provides strategic vision and direction to the senior management of the Group. LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bruce-rockowitz-b738086a/ ABOUT THE HOSTTze Ching started her entrepreneurial journey back in 2007 with the launch of a sustainable clothing and home furnishing ecommerce business. Next, she created a sustainable fashion brand. In 2019, she launched a social enterprise to help raise awareness about the negative impact of fashion at schools and colleges. Through the 15-year journey, she learned so much, but easily the most meaningful lesson learned was about the importance of marketing. She now focuses on channelling those insights to help others succeed, through We Disrupt Agency, a business coaching, mentoring and digital marketing company. Since the GOP won the majority in the House, the House Judiciary Committee has wasted no time beginning investigations. Prioritizing the issues at the forefront of many Americans' minds, House Republicans are looking into the collaboration between the government and big tech, the handling of the U.S.-Mexico border, and the origins of COVID-19. Furthermore, the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government is focusing on the potential politicization of the FBI and Department of Justice — something many Republicans believe has led to “attacks on American civil liberties.” As Chairman of both committees, Congressman Jim Jordan (R-OH) is leading the charge to pass legislation and “get the facts on the table” for the American people. On the Rundown, Rep. Jordan discusses why tackling corruption within big tech and the federal government is his priority, his thoughts on another train derailing in Ohio shortly after the incident in East Palestine, and why he believes the Biden administration's inability to “project strength” has led to many U.S. conflicts.   Republicans, with the help of some Democrats, passed a resolution last week that would end a Biden policy allowing retirement fund managers to consider factors like corporate social justice policy and climate change impact when deciding what companies to invest in. President Biden, who supports environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing, is expected to veto the bill. Critics of the ESG say it puts ‘wokeism' before making money and hurts fossil fuel and gun companies. Supporters say overturning the rule interferes with private investing decisions. CapitalistPig hedge fund manager and FOX News Contributor Jonathan Hoenig joins the FOX News Rundown to break down the debate and explain why the folks on Wall Street and Main Street should understand ESG investigating.   Plus, commentary by Jimmy Failla, host of "Fox Across America with Jimmy Failla." A top Democrat on the House Armed Services committee, Rep. Adam Smith, recently told FOX News Sunday's Shannon Bream that the state of American military readiness is "a huge problem." This comment comes on the heels of four-star Air Force General Mike Minihan suggesting on Friday that the US might face armed conflict with China as soon as 2024. America is heavily invested in helping Ukraine defend itself from Russian forces, but some are flagging the possibility that major investments must now be made in the US military as China menaces Taiwan and military experts see potential for conflict. National Security Council Coordinator John Kirby joins the podcast to explain how the Biden administration is addressing rising tensions with China, how the Pentagon is preparing for a range of potential threats, and why US support for Ukraine sends a key warning to ambitious autocrats around the globe.   President Biden is supposed to meet with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy today to discuss how both parties will approach raising the country's debt limit. While House Republicans have demanded spending cuts in order to remedy the economic issue at hand, President Biden has been adamant that he will not negotiate with the GOP in order to avoid a looming default in June. As Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Congressman Jason Smith (R-MO) runs the committee responsible for much of the government's tax, trade, and budget issues. He joins the Rundown to explain what is attached to the Republicans' plan to raise the debt limit, as well as what's on the Committee's agenda in the year ahead.   Plus, commentary by columnist David Marcus. Tom Welcomes back Dr. Stephen Leeb. He is a financial author, wealth manager, and newsletter publisher. Stephen notes that BRICS+ move has been quite rapid away from Western markets. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization was formed initially between China and Russia. Its goals were security and economic growth. In 1996, India and Pakistan joined. They have a lot of cultural and political differences between them. They were seeking ways to harmonize economic growth while maintaining sovereignty of the nations involved. Likewise, they met recently with other nations like Saudi Arabia and Iran. Culturally they are rivals, but they are coming together. Many other countries are also now wanting to join one or both organizations. The World Gold Council wants to create a worldwide blockchain to bring discipline to the way countries use money. Stephen discusses why the gold standard brought stability to the economic system. Stephen believes that NATO is breaking as countries like Turkey, allies with Russia on gas distribution. Italy intends to exit the European Union and the Euro. Europe as a bloc is beginning to disintegrate. It seems clear that the attack on Nordstream pipeline was done by U.S. interests. Sanctions against Russia and China are damaging the technological growth of the West. He says, "We're at a critical point in human civilization."
