Send us a textWe had the honor of sharing memories of a wonderful man, Dr. Bob Pick, with his good friend and our honorary co-host, Dr. Alan Stern. There was no one quite like Bob. While most people live for the weekend, waiting for the stress of the week to finally be over, Bob lived for Mondays. He was always ready to tackle whatever came his way with a smile on his face. As Dr. Stern said so beautifully, Bob's purpose in life was to make life better for others. He always put everyone else first and considered every person individually, always making time to get to know them and show them he cared. There will never be anyone in the dental education community quite like Bob. We are so honored to have had him as part of our own story as a friend, mentor & recurring guest on the show. His presence will always be part of the dental community & we will never stop learning from him.  Bob was passionate about finding an end to cancer. If you're able, please consider contributing in Bob's honor to the cancer center programs at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the hospital that saved his life: https://nmgive.donordrive.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.event&eventID=1316May we all honor his memory by looking for the “purple cow WOW!” in every single day

Have you ever wondered if the pouch reset diet is a good idea or too extreme? In today's episode, Dr. Edmund Chen joins us to break down the myths and misconceptions surrounding pouch reset diets in bariatric surgery. Dr. Chen dives into why quick-fix approaches can be dangerous and emphasizes the importance of building healthy eating habits and staying in touch with your healthcare team. Together, we discuss the goals you should focus on—like non-scale victories and realistic milestones—and why BMI alone doesn't define your health. This conversation is all about redefining success and staying positive on your journey! IN THIS EPISODE: [:29] Check out the BariNation online membership community.  [2:30] Is the pouch reset diet a good idea or too extreme? [5:23] Going back to the basics of tracking and measuring your food. [7:17] Faithfully using the Bari Good Day Checklist found in the BariNation community to stay on track. [9:21] Talk to your healthcare provider when you have a concern. [12:50] Dr. Chen gives the listener advice on this chronic disease.  KEY TAKEAWAYS: Pouch reset diets are not a healthy approach to eating. They mimic the highly restrictive calorie intake of the initial one to two weeks after surgery, which is not sustainable or balanced long-term. Consistent healthy eating habits and regular exercise will help you achieve your weight loss goals. Being mindful of what you eat and making nutritious food choices will significantly affect your overall well-being. Many people let their emotions trigger unnecessary panic about their progress. Instead, focus on setting realistic goals and lean into support from the BariNation community. If you're feeling discouraged, contact your medical provider—they can guide you through the steps needed for your unique situation. Preaching for the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Ariell Watson Simon offers a reflection on God meeting us in our spiritual hunger: "That feeling of holy discontent doesn't mean that yesterday's prayer didn't work; it means that God is building a relationship of trust with you. Just like the Israelites' physical hunger kept them looking to the heavens for manna, our spiritual hunger turns us toward God. Hunger grounds us in the everyday. It's in this everyday hunger that God will meet us, giving us this day – each day – our daily bread." Ariell Simon, M.Div. is a healthcare chaplain who lives, writes, and serves in central Missouri. Ariell was raised in the evangelical church, which instilled in her the value of scripture and the importance of lay ministry. After falling in love with Catholic Social Teaching as an undergraduate student at Loyola University Maryland, she entered the Catholic Church in 2011. Ariell received a Masters of Divinity from Boston College School of Theology and Ministry in 2018. She completed her chaplain residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, focusing on psychiatry and spiritual care. In this episode, Drs. Amy Park and Mark Hoffman welcome Dr. Angela Chaudhari, Chief of Gynecology and Gynecologic Surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, to share her experience promoting a culture of physician wellness as the Director of the P2P Network for Physician Peer Support. --- SHOW NOTES Dr. Chaudhari discusses how her inspiration to advocate for physician wellness began when she herself was experiencing feelings of burnout. Initially an open ear for colleagues on an individual level, Dr. Chaudhari was later trained on the topic of wellness through the Scholars of Wellness Program and received her Organization Leadership and Coaching Certificate at Northwestern University. Dr. Chaudhari then explains that, through the program, volunteers from both medical and non-medical backgrounds are trained to provide support for those experiencing adverse events, “compassion fatigue,” and discriminatory patient experiences. In addition, peers are also available to provide feedback or education. Specific metrics for the program include retention, wellbeing scores, and culture surveys to identify “pain points'' within the Institution. Next, the doctors discuss the topic of “work-life integration,” rather than work-life balance, and how to promote this in your own practice. While acknowledging that it may be difficult to advocate for yourself and set boundaries early on in your career, the group emphasizes the role of mentorship and how this can empower trainees/learners to take action sooner rather than later. The episode ends with a discussion on creating culture in your workplace. The doctors express sentiments that maintaining an intentional, positive outlook and treating all colleagues with respect is a key aspect in promoting wellness. In addition, they encourage listeners to acknowledge difficult situations and to share personal experiences to further promote an environment of support and growth. --- RESOURCES Define Measure Analyze Improve Control (DMAIC) Process: https://asq.org/quality-resources/dmaic Stolarski A, Moseley JM, O'Neal P, Whang E, Kristo G. Welcome to Ruby's Happy Place! We're talking healthy food today — especially fiber! Because #EverybodyLovesAGoodPoop. Dr. Will Bulsiewicz (hereafter "Dr. B") is a clinician, researcher, author, gut health expert, and Ruby and Anne's guest for episode 22. If you're operating under the belief that fibrous foods taste about as good as the paper Dr. B's books are written on, listen on. There's so much good here, in information AND flavor. Gut health is more critical than most of us know — sure, it affects our weight and muscle mass, but it can also impact our mood, energy levels, even our fertility. Finding the right diet can help us feel like ourselves again, says Dr. B, and when he found the right nutrition for him, he knew he had to share his journey with his patients.  Will Bulsiewicz is a board certified gastroenterologist. He graduated from medical school at Georgetown School of Medicine and was Chief Medical Resident at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Chief Gastroenterology Fellow at The University of North Carolina Hospitals. He also holds a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation from Northwestern University and a Certificate in Nutrition from Cornell University. Dr. B has won multiple awards and distinctions for his work as a clinician and researcher. His goal as a gut health doc is to be a trusted, research-based source helping people to create positive change in their lives. At the core of his philosophy is what he calls “lifestyle medicine,” which uses food, exercise, and other lifestyle factors to optimize your gut and get you back in control of your health.   When he is not working as a full-time gastroenterologist, Dr. B is writing and is twice now a New York Times bestselling author, first with Fiber Fueled and as of May 2022, with The Fiber Fueled Cookbook. You can find more about Dr. B's approach, his books, and his 2023 Masterclass on his website ThePlantFedGut.com or on social @TheGutHealthMD And of course, you can find out more about your hosts, Ruby and Anne, at https://thewholepineapple.com/.
