This week, our guest needs no introduction. Matt Hranek is the founder of the William Brown Project, editor of WM Brown magazine, a creative director, photographer, author of A Man & His Watch and a self-confessed ‘street hustler’, to boot. In other words, he’s about as busy a figure in indie menswear as it gets. Aleks caught up with him a few weeks ago at Pitti Uomo, to talk about his early career in photography, his move from mainstream media to independent publishing, and to contemplate the power of being niche. We hope you enjoy the episode, please do review us if so and give us a follow on Instagram @handcutradio.***HandCut Radio is proud to be sponsored by Thomas Mason, an historic mill that’s been supplying famous designers, shirtmakers and tailors with world class shirting fabrics since 1796.***Show Notes:Matt Hranek | Instagram[03:52] Yolanda Edwards[05:46] St JOHN Restaurant[14:52] Condé Nast Traveler [15:07] Guess Jeans[15:22] ELLE Magazine[20:36] Gourmet Magazine[20:37] Hooks & Bullets Magazine[22:48] New Yorker Magazine[22:49] The Economist Magazine[24:38] A Man & His Watch Book[25:44] Rolex Datejust[25:46] James Bond Rolex Submariner[25:56] Omega Speedmaster[28:44] Levis 501[28:53] Grenfell, England[28:59] Drake’s[35:29] Thom Browne[36:48] Dunhill[38:25] Horst P. This episode was recorded in the hotel lobby at The Societies Convention 2019, so forgive the background noise (and the unexpected accompaniment of a random pianist!) I am interviewing the incredible wedding photographer and all-round nice guy, David Bostock. We talk about all things photography, saxophone playing, the importance of pursuing the image and the strategy of always selling albums. David also mentions his favourite photographers (Bob Carlos Clarke and Horst P. Horst) and his favourite book Clarke's The Dark Summer. Viel Spass? Davin Lavikka - The Alternative Processes Davin is a Fine Art and Commercial Photographer based in Scottsdale Arizona. You may know Davin from his YouTube channel filled with instructional videos on all things photography. From understanding gear to learning on how to be better prepared on your next shoot. Davin Lavikka is a photographer and artist in Scottsdale Arizona. Photography is his primary tool and has been for the last fifteen years. He is known for his architectural and commercial work but has become known for his fine art photography first. He is influenced by early masters like Eugene Atget, W. Eugene Smith, Diane Arbus, Walker Evens, Ansel Adams, Albert Renger-Patzsch, Horst P. Horst, Ernst Haas, Herbert Bayer, Jacques Henri Lartigue and Edward Weston. From the very beginning Davin has been a visionary translating his ideas into a physical form through drawing, painting, illustrating and photography. Davin's ultimate goal is to fully explore the artistic side of photography through alternative processes and ideas. He is fascinated with visual composition and how we react to it. "You can look at a master painter's work like Marcus Pierson, Philip Curtis or Van Gogh, see a painting they did and automatically know it was them. It's harder to do that with photography but that's the goal, to see identify me without knowing the work." Happy Shooting! This week, we talk about image; both the images you take as photographers as well as the image you present of yourself as the photographer. Do better shoes make you a better photographer and, if so, when did being cool trump being good? We also tackle some listener Q&A and profile Horst P. Horst as our Photographer of the Week.
