节目简介|Episode Description|エピソード紹介在冬奥会闭幕之际,这一期聊一聊“唯金牌论”这种心态。在奥运这样的国际赛事中,成绩往往被放在非常重要的位置。这种结果导向的思维,与中国长期以来的体育体制以及社会期待之间存在一定的关联。同时,年轻一代运动员的心态也正在发生变化。金牌、压力与成功之间的关系,或许值得我们重新思考。In this episode, recorded at the close of the Winter Olympics, I reflect on what is often described as a “gold medal mentality.” In international competitions, medals are frequently treated as the primary measure of success. This results-oriented mindset is closely linked to China's long-standing sports system and broader social expectations. At the same time, younger athletes may be approaching success in new ways. It might be worth reconsidering how we define success under pressure. And unlike most people who come to me for coaching, Catherine was starting from ground zero. She tried Duolingo for around a week, but quickly realized that she needed a more systematic approach that would actually enable her to reach her goals. So, Katharine has a demanding career. She's raising a family and she lives in the UK. Hey, so moving to China or dedicating full days to study isn't really an option. And so we set a very specific goal for her first 6 months, which was to establish a rock-solid foundation when it came to pronunciation, tones, and sentence structure. So that meant rather than cramming thousands of random words from HSK lists, focusing on the words that she needed to use herself to talk about, the things that she was interested and wanted to talk about, and making sure she could say those things really well. So making sure that her pronunciation and tones were really good for the things that she wanted to say. And so that's what she's done for the first 6 months, collecting phrases that she actually wants to say and building her own kind of personalized immersion environment where she's immersing in those things that she wants to talk about all the time while walking the dog, commuting to meetings, etc. So, in a moment, we're going to hear a clip of Katherine reading a script that she wrote about whales, entirely in Chinese with excellent tones. And after you hear that clip, I interview Katherine in English about her experience over her first 6 months of learning Chinese. So, now let's listen to Katherine in Chinese on the topic of Wales, where she's from.

Meet Paul Mike Ashton, the American content creator who turned a quirky catchphrase into a nationwide sensation with his viral "City 不 City" meme. Growing up in a small town in Pennsylvania, Paul's curiosity for Asian cultures led him to study Chinese, setting him on a path that would take him from the Amish countryside to the neon lights of Shanghai. From his first Chinese class in high school to study abroad stints in Beijing and Johannesburg (yes, really), Paul's journey is a testament to persistence, passion, and a healthy dose of not knowing when to quit. After grinding through HSK tests and Chinese financial risk management courses (in Mandarin, no less!), Paul found his blend of cultural comedy struck a chord with millions of Chinese netizens. His catchphrase "City 不 City" not only trended across Chinese social media but also got plastered on billboards and even echoed by Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds. In this episode, Paul, also known as “Bao Bao Xiong”, shares the wild ride of becoming a foreign comedy star in China, why jokes are way funnier when you finally understand them in Chinese, and how mastering the language unlocked friendships and career opportunities he never imagined. If you've ever wondered how a small-town kid from Pennsylvania could end up a meme sensation in China, or if you're just looking for a good laugh, you won't want to miss Paul's incredible, meme-worthy story.Links from the episode:Paul Mike Ashton | Instagram and YouTube保保熊 | 抖音Do you have a story to share?
