On this episode of The Lobby Shop, hosts Caitlin Sickles, Paul Nathanson, and Dylan Pasiuk are joined by Glenda Crookes, Executive Director of the Judge Rotenberg Center (JRC), a Massachusetts-based program founded in 1971 that serves approximately 300 children and adults with autism, developmental disabilities, and severe behavioral challenges, many of whom have been unsuccessful in other treatment settings. Crookes discusses JRC's history, mission, and individualized treatment model, including the center's continued advocacy for court‑approved access to electrical stimulation devices (ESDs) as a treatment of last resort for a small number of individuals with life‑threatening self‑injurious and aggressive behaviors for whom all other interventions have failed.

Fire safety in Europe is shaped in a challenging ecosystem - each member country owns its fire safety rules, yet the construction market, standards, and technical language are increasingly shared. I'm joined by Francesca Sciarretta, Scientific Project Officer at the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC), to explain how the JRC supports EU decision-making with independent research and why that “science behind the policy” matters for every practicing fire safety engineer.We unpack what the latest JRC work says about performance-based fire safety engineering in Europe and why prescriptive design still dominates. Francesca walks through how the same country can look “performance-based” to engineers but “not allowed” to regulators, depending on how approval pathways, deviation procedures, and legal wording work. We also talk about where performance-based methods show up most often, from smoke control and structural fire engineering to compartmentation, and why complex assets like high-rise buildings, airport terminals, and underground infrastructure frequently demand engineering judgment.From there, we connect fire safety to the sustainable construction ecosystem: the Construction Products Regulation (CPR), the recast Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), major renovations, and the reality that low-carbon innovation must not introduce hidden fire risk. The conversation then turns to the real engine of progress: education, training, qualification frameworks, and liability. 　9月6日から8日にかけて、北海道帯広市を拠点にJRC全日本ラリー選手権第7戦『RALLY HOKKAIDO（ラリー北海道）』が行われ、シュコダ・ファビアR5を駆る新井大輝／松尾俊亮組が総合優勝を飾った。2024年シーズン5勝目をマークした新井は、最高峰のJN-1クラスで自身2度目となるシリーズチャンピオン獲得を確定させている。 　ラリー北海道は前戦のラリー・カムイに続くシーズン2戦目のグラベル（未舗装路）イベントだ。引き続きXCRスプリント・カップ北海道と併催された同ラリーは、全長が20kmを超える“ヤム・ワッカ”を含む計12本のSS（スペシャルステージ）が設定され合計距離は約104km、リエゾン（移動区間）を含む総走行距離は約630kmで争われた。 投稿 新井大輝、ラリー北海道で今季5勝目。最終戦を待たず4年ぶりのチャンピオン獲得決める／全日本ラリー は autosport web に最初に表示されました。

Euroopan unioni rahoittaa tiedettä ja tutkimusta vuosien 2021 ja 2027 välisenä aikana lähes sadalla miljardilla eurolla. Osa tästä rahasta jaetaan tutkimusrahoituksena eurooppalaisille tutkijoille ja tutkimusryhmille, mutta tästä summasta rahoitetaan myös EU:n oman tutkimuskeskuksen JRC:n (Joint Research Centre eli Euroopan komission yhteinen tutkimuskeskus) toiminta. Keskuksen pääpaikka on Isprassa, Italiassa, mutta toimintoja on myös Belgiassa ja Espanjassa. JRC:n tehtävänä on tuottaa tieteellistä tietoa päätöksenteon tueksi ja toimia myös itsenäisenä tutkimuslaitoksena. Vaikka keskus ei ole mitenkään salainen, on se varsin vähän tunnettu. Tutkimusrahoitusta jaettiin juuri nyt huhtikuussa, ja Brysselin koneessa tutkimusrahoista ja niiden hakuprosessista kertovat professori Hannu Häkkinen Jyväskylän yliopistosta – eräs rahoitusta saaneista – sekä Suomen Akatemiassa EU-rahoituksen kanssa työtä tekevä johtava tiedeasiantuntija Annika Raitala. 　4月26日から28日にかけて、愛媛県は久万高原町を中心にJRC全日本ラリー選手権第3戦『久万高原ラリー』が行われ、勝田範彦／木村裕介組（GR YARIS Rally2）が優勝。2024年シーズン2勝目を飾った。 　前戦の唐津から2週間という短いスパンでの開催となった久万高原ラリーは、開幕戦から続くターマック（舗装路）イベントの3戦目。ラリーは27日（土）と28日（日）の2日間で計8つのスペシャルステージ（SS）で争われた。 投稿 勝田範彦が圧勝でシーズン2勝目。連勝狙った新井大輝はSS1直前に無念のリタイア は autosport web に最初に表示されました。

Ved ujevne mellomrom har politikere foreslått at Norge bør inkludere skogens CO2-opptak i klimamålet.  – Et forståelig men lite gjennomtenkt forslag, sier Lars Ursin og forklarer hvorfor i denne podkast-episoden.   Da EU oppdaterte sitt klimamål for 2030 under Parisavtalen valgte unionen å inkludere CO2-opptak i skog i målet. Det har fått enkelte politikere og samfunnsdebattanter i Norge til å tenke: Hvorfor kan ikke vi også gjøre det? Norge har mye skog, og i 2022 var det et netto opptak av CO2-i skogen i Norge på 17,9 millioner tonn CO2. Norges klimagassutslipp fra petroleum, industri, transport, jordbruk og de øvrige sektorene som inngår i klimagassregnskapet var på 48,9 millioner tonn CO2-ekvivalenter, samme år. Det betyr at hadde vi trukket opptaket av CO2 fra utslippene, ville Norges klimagassregnskap med et knips sett mye bedre ut. – Det er lett å skjønne hvorfor noen tenker at det ville vært behagelig. For med et sånt grep forsvinner en tredel av utslippene våre ut av regnskapet. Men det er gode grunner til å ikke gjøre det, sier Lars Ursin. Han er redaktør for forskningsformidling i Norsk klimastiftelse og har nylig publisert temanotatet Klima, natur og areal  – 14 spørsmål og svar om arealbrukssektoren I denne podkast-episoden forklarer han hvordan det egentlig står til med den norske skogens CO2-opptak, hvorfor opptaket kan svinge med mange millioner fra ett år til et annet, og hvorfor det ikke er en god ide for Norge å inkludere opptak av CO2 i klimamålet når EU gjør det. Patrick McCutcheon has been the Managing Director of IP Europe since July 2022. He previously worked for 17 years at the European Commission as a policy advisor, later senior expert on IP and competition law, in the European Commission's Research and Innovation. In these positions, he worked on a review of policies impacting incentives to invest in R&D and engage in open innovation including participation in standards and licensing of technology. He managed together with the Commission's JRC a project monitoring and analyzing industrial R&D investments which included the annual EU industrial R&D scoreboard. He was part of an intra-departmental team developing a policy framework on the licensing of SEPs and commissioned studies and expert groups on fostering patent aggregation and the impact of mergers on innovation in Pharma. His background is in business administration, he holds an MBA from Edinburgh Business School, and law he holds an LLB and LLM from the University of London with a specialization in IP and competition law.Patrick explains in the podcast that IP Europe brings together innovative European organizations that recognize the value of intellectual property in driving growth and job creation. Its mission is to promote policies that support a collaborative European innovation ecosystem to ensure that all innovators can receive a fair return on their investments in developing new solutions, thereby encouraging further research and development.In the podcast interview, Patrick explains that the question of essentiality was in most SEP licensing discussions, not the main issue. Most of the debate is about price and the value the technology adds to the end product. Claim charting each and every of the 70,000 declared patent families would add unreasonable costs to the licensing program. Even if AI tools help with that the question remains: How much do we know about the value of patented technology? Patrick further explains that a claim chart is also only one opinion at one particular point in time about a certain implementation of the standard. Patrick says it's still not clear if more claim charts and increased transparency about essentiality would after all facilitate licensing. Patents are probabilistic regarding if they are valid, essential, and of value. Patrick also states that people should not forget that in most cases agreement is reached. This is because there is an agreement in the industry about what a reasonable price is. Currently, about 90% of the SEP licensing revenue is about cellular technology. But of course, SEPs are also relevant to other standards e.g. Wi-Fi or video codec. In general, Patrick also feels that litigation for most of these technologies and SEPs has not really been increasing. The challenge now is licensing technologies in new verticals like IoT but even here comparable licenses in other industries can be used as a benchmark to start negotiations.

Una vasta operación de la Comisión Europea ha revelado un amplio fraude en la miel importada, hasta el 46 % de esta miel podría haber sido adulterada con jarabes provenientes de arroz, maíz o betabel, según el informe “From the Hives” (De las Colmenas) de la UE. El informe “From the Hives” (De las Colmenas) de la Comisión Europea especifica que esta miel importada por la Unión Europea, sospechosa de ser adulterada, si bien, no representa un riesgo para la salud, sí refleja un amplio fraude para el consumidor que compra una miel creyendo ser 100 % pura: de las 320 muestras de miel analizadas, 46 % son sospechosas de haber sido adulteradas. Los productos más falsificados en el mundo son la leche, el aceite de oliva y la miel, en ese orden. Proeza técnica para detectar este fraudeDetectar si una miel ha sido adulterada es sumamente difícil. Antes se adulteraba con jarabes de azúcar a base de almidón de maíz o de azúcar de caña. Pero las personas que llevan a cabo estos fraudes, al saberse vigiladas, reemplazaron estos jarabes por unos más difíciles de detectar, como los jarabes a base de arroz, de trigo o de betabel. Fue así como se llegó al resultado sorprendente de que casi la mitad de esta miel importada está adulterada.Dulce negocioDiluir la miel con jarabes de azúcar puede ser un negocio muy dulce para los comerciantes sin escrúpulos: en promedio, una miel importada en Europa cuesta 2,17 euros el litro, mientras que el jarabe de azúcar de arroz ronda entre los 40 y  60 céntimos por litro.  La mayoría de estas mieles importadas adulteradas proviene de China y de Turquía. Un consejo simple para el consumidor: desconfiar cuando una miel es muy barata y comprar de preferencia la miel directamente al productor. La organización Foodwatch por su parte ha hecho una petición para que los Estados Europeos se doten de aparatos capaces de detectar este tipo de fraudes alimenticios.
