John Brieger is a board game developer based in Sunnyvale, CA with a background in qualitative research. His recent clients and licensees include Tasty Minstrel Games, Indie Boards and Cards, Deepwater Games, Thunderworks Games, and many more. He also writes the board game advice column #PlaytestingTipOfTheDay on Twitter. John and I talk about how we met, and what I consider to be our defining moment as friends during college. We then go into John's 10 goals in 10 years. When he was 20 years old, he set himself ten goals to complete by the time he is 30 years old. He talks about his progress so far, how he measures progress, and whether he will be able to complete each one. Within this conversation, we also discuss his life developing board games, managing a studio, the importance of user feedback, and managing an everchanging schedule. John gives us some insight on the world of board game development, the culture within the industry, the changes due to the pandemic, and the differences between this industry and his past in tech. We then jump into how Kickstarter has aided board game development by giving power to the consumers along with providing exposure to smaller game development companies. We finish our conversation by talking about mental health issues, setting your schedule based on priorities, and ensuring that you have time for yourself and for whatever is important to you. - You can learn more about John's work by visiting his website: http://briegerdevelopment.com/ Follow him on Twitter and Instagram: @dasbrieger

Names are powerful. The Spiel des Jahres means "game of the year" simpliciter, but for years we know that the juries have been casting a narrower and narrower net of what games thay would consider. It has become more of a specialized imprint, which is fine--but it's strange that the name still inspires such cachet. Anything with rules in excess of 3 or so pages seems now to be firmly beyond the pale as far as the SdJ is concerned. Ah, well, times change, and we are prone to fits of curmudgeonly behavior. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, everyone! We are very excited to continue bringing you old news – PAX Unplugged recap, part two!Jason shares about three more games that hit the table in and around PAX. First there’s Gem Rush, Second Edition (3:25), which is the first game that we will have reviewed twice on the pod. The Second Edition adds… more stuff! It doesn’t leave soot on your hands as you play! Jason is really excited to share about it. The next game is also a reiteration – Cosmic Run: Regeneration from Dr. Finn’s Games (8:46). If you liked Deep Space D6, Jason thinks there’s a chance you’ll like this one even more. We wrap up our reviews with one of the new adventure games from Martin Wallace, Wildlands (16:17). This one is getting a fair amount of buzz as a family friendly skirmish game with some Euro elements. After the reviews, we get into some bigger conversations about the board gaming industry, particularly some of the mergers going on. Good friend of the pod Brenna Noonan stops by to chat about Game Salute’s acquisition of Victory Point Games. Then, Stephen Buonocore from Stronghold and Tricia Victor from Indie Boards and Cards talk about the new company they have founded, Indie Game Alliance. Finally, we take a look at the digital side with Jeremy from Handelabra Games – they of the recently completed Aeon’s End Kickstarter.

Why can't we all just get along? This week Mark and Walker agree that anyone causing pain should be tortured to death. Wait, that doesn't work. Join us this week while we discuss three games we have recently played. Ryan explains Pirate 21, a quick game from Indie Boards and Cards. Nathan follows with his explanation of Delve from the same company, and finally, Brent leads off discussion about Codenames Duet, a cooperative version of Codenames.
This week, Anthony and Chris dig into euro-mega-designers Uwe Rosenberg and Stefan Feld to determine once and for all, who does it better. In this special designer edition of our VS. feature, we'll look at the games of both designer, as well as their impact on gaming and overall fun-factor for us to determine which comes out ahead. We also ask the listeners in our question of the week who they'd pick if they could only have one library of games. In our acquisition disorders, Anthony looks at Dragon Island, the new game from R&R Games and Mike Fitzgerald coming later this fall, and Chris looks at Vast after his first play as the Goblins. While not a full review, hear Chris's first impressions of this incredibly unique asymmetrical game, plus thoughts on the expansions coming for it soon. The guys dig into recent plays as well. Anthony shares his thoughts and recommendation for Yamatai, the newest from Days of Wonder and designer duo Bruno Cathala and Marc Paquien. Chris then shares his recent play through of Delve, the Carcassonne-like mashup from Indie Boards and Cards. If you enjoy the episode, make sure to leave us a review on iTunes.
