Hello and thank you for visiting NuDirections, an independent music-loving UK-based podcaster dedicated to a worldwide audience of open-minded music lovers, focusing on music that is so often overlooked by mainstream music channels that the world needs to hear. NuDirections releases a monthly music show on the first Saturday of each month, that's an overview of the music we love, and by putting out podcasts and the occasional guest mix throughout the month we can focus on specific areas of music in-depth. NuDirections brings together music from many different cultural, ethnic and diverse styles, Music that's both uncompromising and bold that can only be described by the generic name, Jazz. Every show links together new, favourites, standards, experimental, vintage, obscure and sometimes challenging music. Always searching for the extreme and hard-to-categorize sound, that has often fallen between the cracks. NuDirections started broadcasting on a community radio station in early 2020, and the response was so overwhelming that NuDirections moved to become an independent podcaster in January 2021. NuDirections shows and podcasts are now on 10 podcast platforms, with a regular online audience of 8000+ in 42 countries. Please enjoy the music we love. NuDirections
As a mix, Boxes, Memories & Hidden Grooves flows like a journal entry, contemplative in places, ecstatic in others, and filled with the kind of sonic texture you can only get when memory meets music. There's a gentle polarity here, between worldliness and intimacy, structure and space. The mix leans toward jazz fusion, spiritual jazz, and global jazz but it's more about vibe than genre. Think forgotten fusion from Scandinavia, cinematic jazz-rock from Indonesia, soulful beat-led explorations, and the kind of live recordings that put you in the room. Whether you're packing, unpacking, or just taking stock of the music that's shaped you, this hour is designed to move with you. Welcome along. I know I often say this, but truly — there are some real gems in this selection. From deep cuts to timeless moods, this mix brings together moments that continue to inspire me. On a personal note, I've started gathering new gear for the studio I'll be setting up once I've settled after the move. Things are shifting, in more ways than one. This week, I have a playlist for you that stretches across continents and moods, a rich tapestry of sound that celebrates both discovery and the familiar warmth of timeless artistry. I open with a gem from Russia — "Case" by the Ilugdin Trio, a striking piece that caught me completely off guard in the best way. Dmitry Ilugdin and his trio lay down something deeply melodic, harmonically rich, and full of understated elegance. A real find. Next, I tip my hat to one of my all-time favourite voices in jazz, the ever-cool Patricia Barber. Her track "This Town" is a reminder of why she remains a singular force — cerebral, sultry, and effortlessly hip. Further into the mix, you'll find some fresh and fiery ensemble work from Clélya Abraham and company, the hypnotic grooves of Sean Khan with jazz legend Peter King and the luminous Heidi Vogel, and a cinematic journey courtesy of the Espen Berg Trio, joined by the haunting trumpet of Mathias Eick on "Vintermørke." And then there's "Eberhard" — a poignant, sprawling tribute by the late, great Lyle Mays. For those who, like me, hold the Pat Metheny Group close to the heart, this is a moving reminder of Lyle's genius. His musical voice was — and remains — one of the most emotionally intelligent in modern jazz. I close with some adventurous sounds: the genre-bending "El Momento" by Sly5thAve & Roberto Verastegui, the dreamy textures of Rahill's "Futbol," and an experimental nugget from Drift Lab that plays like a sonic science project in the best sense. This playlist is full of surprises, beauty, groove, and soul — the kind of mix that makes you feel like the world's a little more connected through sound. So wherever you're tuning in — just press play and let the music take you. Thanks for listening. Intro I wasn't planning on a second mix this month… but after digging through my collection, I found some absolute gems that I had to share!
Welcome to Jazz Matters. Life is a little hectic right now—I'm in the middle of relocating and selling my home. If all goes to plan, a new home and studio should be ready by June or July. Until then, regular shows won't be possible, but I'll put together the occasional mix when time allows. This session is filled with music rediscovered while packing—a collection of gems that had slipped to the back of my mind. It's been a joy to reconnect with these tracks, and I hope you enjoy this March selection as much as I have. In my African Latin Music mix, I will lean heavily on an outstanding musician from this music genre, Pape Fall. He blew my ears apart when I first heard his music and his name resonates deeply within the world of African and Latin music. Pape Fall is a Senegalese musician, singer, and saxophonist, Fall has spent decades crafting a unique blend of Afro-Cuban rhythms with traditional Senegalese melodies with Latin influences. As the founder of the renowned band African Salsa, he has left an indelible mark on the global music scene, carrying the rich musical traditions of his homeland onto international stages. A Journey Through Music Born in Dakar in 1947, Fall began his musical career in 1966 with Dakar Rhythm before joining the legendary Star Band in the 1970s. In 1976, he formed African Salsa, a group that quickly gained popularity for its infectious energy and innovative fusion of styles. Their first major international release, Artisanat, showcased Fall's exceptional talent on the saxophone and vocals, earning him recognition as a pioneer of African salsa. Beyond African Salsa, Fall played a key role in other influential groups, including Nder de Dakar and Kassé Star. His career has spanned over 20 albums and extensive tours across Africa, Europe, and the U.S., spreading the rhythms of African salsa to global audiences. The Sound of African Salsa Fall's music is a masterful blend of Senegalese mbalax and Cuban salsa, featuring intricate percussion, dynamic brass sections, and rhythmic complexity. The new programme by Mestizo Sounds focuses on folk music, mainly sixties and seventies. The idea for this programme is due to the new feature film “A Complete Unknown” about Bob Dylan's early days until he abandons the folk structures. The Folk scene was the catalyst for the most brilliant composers in the music revolution of the sixties. I hope the listener appreciates the selected music and agrees that Folk Music Matters! Soon, a new programme featuring more contemporary folk music will follow. Hi all – sorry I'm a bit late this month. I've been caught up in a whirlwind of change lately. I've decided to sell my home and relocate, and let me tell you, the nightmare has already begun! First, I need to get my place ready to sell, and then comes the daunting task of packing up my music and belongings, all while trying to find a new home. It's a lot, but I'm pushing through. On the bright side, a close friend of mine who's a builder has generously offered to help create and fit out my new studio once I move. So, there's some fun to look forward to amidst the chaos! Until I'm settled into my new space and studio, I'll be putting out mixes instead of full shows. This mix, for example, came together as I started sorting through my music collection in preparation for packing. And let me tell you, I stumbled on some absolutely beautiful gems that I'm excited for you to hear. I'm also experimenting with making the mixes closer to 2 hours long instead of the usual 1 hour. Depending on your feedback, I might keep them around this length going forward. Thanks for sticking with me through this transition. I hope you enjoy the mix, and I'll keep you updated as things progress. My Moments of 2024 is a selection of songs that have created special musical marks. 3 groups of artists have a very significant input this year. Fontaines DC, Kutiman and Ezra Collective have been my favourite artists for 2024. I have not only included music from this current year as it is not the music made in one specific year the only one we pay attention and my criteria for this compilation of great tunes is what music has stopped me in my tracks and made an impact on me as a listener. Moments 2024 is definitely not background music. The final song is an astonishing cover of the 1970s hit "Why Can't We Live Together" with a beautiful chorus of female singers chanting No More Wars, No More Wars. It makes a suitable final to a year of human tragedies inflicted through conflict finishes. You can say louder but never so beautifully stated. I hope the listener to Mestizo Sounds appreciate and enjoy Moments 2024. Welcome to my November Jazz Mix, everyone. After a few difficult months following the passing of my father, I found myself distanced from music. Losing that spark, that musical "mojo," was something I didn't expect, but thanks to the incredible support and messages from all of you, I've rediscovered my connection to the music I love. So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for helping me through a challenging time. I'm kicking off this mix with Remy La Boeuf's "Minnesota, WI." I know I've played it before, but it's a piece that resonates deeply with me – a perfect opener that sets the tone with its melodic richness and rhythmic energy. As I presented this playlist, I found myself returning to Oregon's "Creeper," which, once again, reminded me just how unique and influential Oregon's work has been in jazz fusion. It inspired me to start planning a special feature on Oregon, which I hope to release before Christmas. Keep an eye out for it! In the meantime, I've also got a blog accompanying this mix, where you'll find insights on each track and some reflections on the journey that brought this set together. You can check it out on my website, and I'd love to hear your thoughts. So, settle in, relax, and let's enjoy this mix together. Thanks for listening, and I hope this brings as much joy to you as it did for me while putting it together. For as long as I can remember, I've been captivated by the rich interplay between West African Latin music and its counterparts in the Americas, particularly in Cuba. This cross-pollination of styles and rhythms—where ancestral African traditions collided with and transformed the vibrant sounds of Latin America—has produced some of the world's most thrilling and soulful music. In this medley, I'll take you on a musical journey that blurs the borders between continents. I'll kick things off with a track steeped in the rhythms of African Latin music and bring it full circle with a powerful Cuban piece, the birthplace of so much of this genre's evolution. The challenge? You'll have to guess which side of the Atlantic each selection hails from. By blending the lines between continents, these tracks will reveal how deeply connected the musical DNA of Africa and the Latin world truly is. Let the music speak, and let it surprise you. 21-24 – Jazz Matters October 2024 Show Welcome to Jazz Matters, where I invite you to celebrate the music that means the world to me. This month's show is deeply personal, as it is dedicated to the memory of my father. I've been quiet since early June, as my father had been battling illness, and sadly, I lost him recently. This month's show is a tribute to him—a man whose life was also immersed in music. Although his taste gravitated towards country and classical, somehow, we always connected over the timeless sounds of Steely Dan. In his honour, I've included two of his favourite tracks, one from Can't Buy a Thrill and the other from Aja, albums that were very close to his heart. My father wasn't just a music lover, both my grandfather and my father were the greatest influences, shaping the way I experience and appreciate music. So, it feels only right to open today's show with a piece I believe they would have appreciated: Vincent Peirani's "This is New Shit." As I find my way back into the rhythm of things, I'm excited to explore new creative projects and ideas, including a new audiophile platform I've been working on. Though recent events have delayed its launch until December, I'll be sharing updates as I move forward. The Sounds of Colombia is a selection of music made in Colombia. My focus is on the Afro Sounds and Tropical rhythms. Cumbia is a native style created in Colombia that has had a broad impact in Latin American countries and also in Europe with musicians such as Will Holland (Quantic), Richard Blair "Sidestepper", Manu Chao, Joan Garriga (Dusminguet and Trova Kungfu bands) or Sargent Garcia. We will listen to some of the legends of Colombian music like Toto La Momposina, Fruko y sus Tesos, Joe Arroyo or Andres Landero. The show also includes the current wave of great musicians. Among these are Los Aterciopelados, Bomba Estereo, Ondatropica, La Chiva Gantiva, ChicQuibTown, Mojarra Eléctrica or Pernett & The Caribbean Ravers. Colombia has never stopped producing new genres of syncopated styles and many excellent bands and musicians. World music has a special place in my musical heart and was started by the ground breaking UK group Osibisa in the early 70s with the single music for a Gong Gong, where they created a new genre of music that originated from the early 20th century, Highlife music that is characterised by jazzy horns, multiple guitars and an up-tempo, synth-driven sound. Then came along the song that launched Osibisa, ‘Sunshine Day, the band set my musical ears, heart and soul alight when they Combined disparate sounds from Africa, America, the Caribbean, Osibisa broke traditional genre boundaries to emerge as the ultimate African band for me. This was the start of my appreciation and love for world music, after hearing Osibisa I found a record store that specialized in Reggae/Ska and African music, with guidance from the owner and some of the customers, that started my wonderful journey along the musical yellow brick road of world music. Periodically, I release an assortment of music I've dubbed "Forgotten Treasures." This ongoing project sprang to life amidst the digitization of my music collection. As I digitised my music collection from cassette tape, reel to reel and CD, I stumble upon a trove of music that had long evaded my ears, having been tucked away awaiting rediscovery, music that has been buried beneath the layers of time lay a wealth of musical gems that had slipped from my regular rotation. ‘'Forgotten Treasures" was born, a celebration of the overlooked and neglected tunes that once graced my ears. The playlist is in no particular order, genre, style or time, just as I stumble on the musical gems, I say to myself ‘'I've really missed you''. After two months of inactivity, I am happy to present another new programme for NuDirections. The program under the name Rise Above aims to help people overcome the sadness and devastation caused by a world in conflict. Never underestimate the healing power of music. I have included some of my favourite tunes I regularly spin at Big Hands, the coolest bar in Manchester, as well as some discoveries like the talented Jon Lucien. I highly recommend listening to his song "Would You Believe in Me" - he may not be a current singer, but he is truly amazing. Good music is timeless and always worth discovering. Another discovery is the vibrant dancehall tune of More Justice and Truth by Virgin Island's reggae star Pressure Busspipe. Another novelty I found recently, is the great tune of Say Truth by Fred Fisher Atalobhor. Inside my DJ boxes, I get my most regular artist's music played in my sets. There you will find Manu Chao, Joe Bataan, Dreadzone, Mo-Horizons, Zulu 9.30, International Velvet and Planet Hemp. Of course, Hip hop artist and producer from Dallas Oneofus with the great track and theme of the programme. Last but not least, Jah is forever is beautiful melody of lovers Rock by Swish Reggae producer Elijah Solomon and and Jamaican singer Glen Washington. My selection is a bunch of exciting tunes for empowering our minds and souls to Rise Above. Welcome to the March 2024 edition of Jazz Matters! I've curated a playlist brimming with diversity and intrigue, aiming to captivate your musical senses. This is the second in a series of music selections inspired by the music from Black Jazz Records. The founders were Gene Russell and Dick Schory who created the record label around 1969 and released albums from 1971 to 1975, promoting the talents of young African American jazz musicians and singers With the turn of the turn-of-the-seventies and the emergence of revolutionary developments from Electric Miles, Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane and John Coltrane, the funky mutations of soul and jazz, Black Jazz Records took full advantage of all the possibilities that lay ahead for jazz. Black Jazz Records was the first black-owned jazz label in 50 years and they achieved the kind of music status that most '70s and '80s indie record labels could barely dream of. Later DJs Gilles Peterson and Theo Parrish, made mixes and a compilation album focusing on the Black Jazz label. Through the music, you will hear in my first mix I hope to give you a flavour of what they brought to the jazz world, and how much the music from Black Jazz Records means to me from their short existence. A further note – in 1971, the first Black Jazz Record album released was Gene Russell's New Direction, which inspired the birth of NuDirections. Although the label only lasted a little over five years Black Jazz Records carved its place in the history of jazz. CRAIC AGUS CEOL is an Irish expression meaning live music and having fun. I hope this tribute to Irish music brings you the excitement and good times that live Irish music brings about. Ireland is a medium-sized island of over 7 million people. Despite that, its worldwide cultural influence in literature and music has outweighed its size. Like islands such as Cuba, Jamaica and Great Britain, its musical contribution has been extraordinary. These four islands are important musical Meccas. Mestizo Sounds has already made programmes on the music of Cuba, Jamaica's paramount record label Studio One or about the Mods youth musical movement in Great Britain. Now, this show wants to present some of the Irish great talents. You will listen to traditional and modern music and a blend of both. Craic Agus Cell is in the memory of Shane McGowan and Sinead O'Connor. Antonio Forcione is an artist in every sense of the word, hailed as one of the most charismatic, unconventional guitarists at large in the musical world today. With a host of international awards under his belt, this eclectic composer never ceases to stun his audience on stage, leading him to be referred to as the ‘Jimi Hendrix of the acoustic guitar”. His solo performances never fail to bring the house down, let alone when he is performing in duo, as a trio, or with his quartet of international musicians. He breaks the mould of most conventional guitar sounds, be it in the field of jazz, Spanish, African, Brazilian or improvised music, with ferocious virtuosity, passion and humour. He has shared the stage and recorded with some of the world's most accomplished musicians including Charlie Haden, Angelique Kidjo, Trilok Gurtu, Larry Coryell, Diego el Cigala and many more (see list below) as well as supporting giants such as Phil Collins, Bobby McFerrin, Zucchero and Van Morrison amongst others. Welcome to a slightly delayed November Jazz Matters! My super duper new computer hit a monster snag with a hard disk crash, all programs and loads of info disappeared. Thankfully, all of my music is stored externally, but my playlist and show notes took a dive. So, it's all about the music and less chat this time. I'm thrilled about the jazz lineup this month—it's solid from beginning to end. And speaking of special occasions, a big shout-out to the incredible Joni Mitchell, whose birthday was on November 7th. I'm tipping my hat and wrapping up the show with two fantastic pieces from Joni. Enjoy! Trivial is my new monthly mix for NDFM - November 2023. Music cannot change the world, so they say. Sure, it can alter our way of thinking and, thus, it may improve our human existence. With a little help from my friends, I have used quotes of wisdom by celebrated writers, poets, scientists and musicians interluding with music. Something trivial means ordinary, superficial and not relevant. Our order of relative importance of matters is in many ways dictated by our way of living. But what if we got it wrong? Mestizo Sounds is Music Without Frontiers. You will find information on the quotes included in the mix at https://mestizosounds.wordpress.com/2023/11/04/trivial/ PLAYLIST 1- Wow and Flutter - STEREOLAB 2- Adiza Claire - LE SUPER BORGOU DE PARAKOU 3- Manhattan - ENRIQUE MORENTE & LAGARTIJA NICK (featuring ESTRELLA MORENTE) 4- Delirium - EUPHORIA 5- Moondog Monologue - MOONDOG 6- Bindi - MUKTA (MATTHIEU BALLET Remix) 7- Between the Past - WOODS 8- Shifting tides - 2TALL 9- Shelter from the Ash - SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE 10-Satt Att Se - DUNGEN 11- I Wonder - SCOTT SESKIND 12- Your Love is Mine - HOLLY GOLIGHTLY 13- Confidence - TOM LEACH 14- Elionora - MIGUEL DURAN 15- Dalena - ANTONIO CARLOS E JUCAFI 16- The World Needs Changin' - HANK JACOBS & DON MALONE
I first discovered Trilok Gurtu's music around 25 to 30 years ago when it was playing in a record store. It was like my soul instantly connected with his music, and I've been following his work ever since. About a decade later, I had the incredible opportunity to back up Trilok in a performance. Let me tell you, he left me completely awestruck. During the sound check, he did something mind-blowing – he used his left hand and left foot on a standard drum set while simultaneously using his right hand and foot to create a completely different rhythm on an Indian percussion setup. "Wow" is the only word that can capture what I witnessed and heard; it was truly breathtaking, and it left my brain and heart wanting more. Later, I had the pleasure of meeting Trilok in person. I can confidently say that he's not only an extraordinary musician but also a genuinely nice person to chat with. Trilok Gurtu's musical journey began in Bombay, India, where he was born into a musical family. He started playing at a very young age and later travelled to Europe, where he joined the Don Cherry quartet and went on to tour worldwide with groups like Oregon, collaborating with jazz and world music greats. Over the years, he evolved as a musician and performer, blending modern jazz and rock with elements of Indian rhythms and singing into his compositions. His stage presence and humorous presentations added a unique aspect to his performances. This programme is a small sample of the great music from North Africa. My selection includes traditional and modern music. The exotic sounds of North African music and its hypnotic rhythms have attracted some famous Western rock musicians. Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones in 1968 found trance music in Morocco with The Master Musicians of Jajouka so powerful that he recorded a live album presented to the world as Brian Jones Presents the Pipes of Pan at Joujouka. In my selection, there is a piece of the Master Musicians of Jajouka. This time was recorded by the British producer Talvin Singh in 2000. Their style of music is of Sufi tradition and it has a trance quality. Same with the Gnawa music from Sahara. Mahmoud Guinia was a celebrated star of this genre. From the desert too is Tinariwen (Algeria/Mali), the Tuareg band with extraordinary links to the blues music. From Argel is the superstar of Rai music Khaled. France is a country that has an important music community of the Algerian diaspora such as Gnawa Diffusion and the recently deceased Rachid Taha. Another extraordinary band from Morocco that you can listen to is Aisha Kandisha's Jarring Effects, one of the most avant-garde North African bands. They used technology and modern Western sounds for the purpose of their indigenous music, not the other way around to adapt to Western music by smothering their productions. Underher is AKA for Khaled Bess, a Tunisian/Canadian successful electronic producer. His productions are very representative of electronic music with melancholic tone. I don't usually repeat music I have played in previous shows or mixes. One of the exceptions is the very catchy and feeling-good song Ayonha by Libyan (and resident in Egypt) songwriter of Arabic Pop Hamid El Shaeri. Natacha Atlas is part of the North African diaspora (British/Egyptian). She is a prominent figure in the British World music scene. Amine Bouhafa is also part of the North African music diaspora. He is Tunisian but residing in France. Bouhafa is one of the most successful young film music composers who won a prestigious international award with the soundtrack of Timbuktu. I hope this selection whets your appetite to learn about this fascinating music. Welcome along to my African extended mix, my first after our long summer break, in this mix, you will hear a spread of Jazz from the continent of Africa. As I was carried away preparing for this mix, what started as around a one-hour mix grew into a two-hour mix. The music I select for you will be unlike anything else you'll hardly hear elsewhere, my playlists are always uncompromising, bold and sometimes challenging, often changing in tempo and style to avoid getting stuck into the same groove. Balance in Thinkin' about Ivan Conti 16 August 1946 - 17th April 2023 (age 76) Ivan Conti (aka Mamao) was regarded as one of the greatest drummers on earth. A true rhythmic innovator, Starting his music career as a session drummer with Odeon Records, Ivan collaborated with artists such as Gal Costa, Roberto Carlos and Jorge Ben Ivan gained standing as one of the founding members of Azymuth and is Brazil's answer to Tony Allen, Steve Gadd, Ginger Baker or Trilok Gurtu, Azymuth is a Brazilian jazz-funk group formed in 1973. The original lineup was a trio composed of José Roberto Bertrami, Alex Malheiros, and Ivan Conti, they gained international recognition in the 1970s and signed with Milestone Records in 1979, where they recorded a number of albums. I first saw Ivan in Manchester some 20 years ago when Azymuth came to town, Azymuth was not really on my radar but I was taken by a friend of mine, well, as the concert started I was an instant convert, amazing. Ivan Conti also explored solo ventures and electronic dance music collaborations throughout his career. Known for his unique drumming style blending jazz-funk with Brazilian rhythms, contributing to Azymuth's distinctive sound. Ivan's career has spanned far beyond half a century's worth of recordings with the likes of Milton Nascimento, Eumir Deodato, Marcos Valle, Hyldon, Gal Costa and Jorge Ben. More recently Mamao recorded an album with hip-hop giant Madlib under the AKA ‘Jackson Conti'. This new programme is about the influence of Ralph Hutter and Florian Schneider, the leaders of the German band KRAFTWERK, in modern Pop music and other different trends. Probably, the most influential band in the history of pop music, especially since the ninety-eighties The playlist is a journey of modern music covering from the German underground scene where Kraftwerk started to the electronic music greatest artists as Aphex Twin through their Japanese counterparts of Yellow Magic Orchestra, the Disco music of Giorgio Moroder, the techno-pop of the Human League, the electro-punk of Suicide and D.A.F. the post-punk sound of Manchester Factory record band A Certain Ratio, their influence in the Hip hop pioneer Africa Bambaataa, the Dub, ambience and world music creators of Bill Laswell and Jah Wobble and the House music pioneers of Derrick May (founder of the Detroit Techno music) and the NY DJs of Masters at Work.
