Copy That Pops: Writing Tips and Psychology Hacks for Business
Hellllo and welcome! Today is a quick copy tip episode for you! Quick shout out to Melina Palmer of the Brainy Business podcast. She was in San Diego from Seattle last week and I happened to be downtown for Pat Flynn’s surprise birthday party and a staycation at the Hyatt (while my husband had a conference), so we met up for coffee and nerded out on podcast, book writing, and using psychological and behavioral economics for pricing your products and services...and how to name things too! Check out her podcast if you want more about applying behavioral economics to your business! For today, I want to give you a quick copy tip (and free tool) to help you figure out what your audience actually wants so you can use it in your writing or in your naming of things...like books, podcasts, blogs, keywords to search for paid ads, SEO, and more. OKAY, SO HERE’S THAT QUICK TIP FOR YOU I learned this from Jared Warner, who is on my Wall of Fame as bestselling book success story #17! He’s a marketing guy and taught this to me for paid ads. But, it’s application is far broader reaching, so I wanted to share it with you! Word It Outhttps://worditout.com/ What this does is turn text into world clouds. Here’s how I suggest you use it step by step in addition to making cool looking word clouds you could share on social media or your website.Let’s use it for copy and knowing what our audience actually wants! Step 1: Pull up a popular book in Amazon around topics relevant to your business (whether you are writing a book, doing a podcast episode, writing a blog, or coming up with web or ad copy...doesn’t matter) Step 2: Expand the reviews of the book, select them all, and hit ‘copy’ -- now, you may want to do this twice...once for 4 and 5 star reviews, and once for 1-3 star reviews. Step 3: Head over to Word It Out and click “Create” at the top. Step 4: Paste the text into the box that says “original text” and then the green button that says “generate” Step 5: Now you have a visual representation of the words used in the reviews! You’ll need to clean it up a little. For example, the author’s name doesn’t help you. Or even “book” may be unhelpful since we got this from book reviews and they are referring to the book they read. Just click on “Word list” and you can exclude words that do not make sense. Another example here would be “Kindle” or “about.” Step 6: Click the blue “regenerate” button to see the words updated Step 7: Save this if you don’t want to lose it and look for words that are trends that you could make sure to incorporate in your writing all over the web! Once you play around with it for a bit and start thinking about it as a way to do market research, the application is unlimited for us with our brands and businesses online! Try it out and let me know what new insights it gives you! ----------- One last note before I sign off! One of my BESTSELLERATOR group program clients is going live with her book on Wednesday the 12th! 12/12/18 Kathy Dale with her book: Sacred Wisdom of Healing: A Practical Guide to Love, Happiness & Healing which you can buy on Amazon for just $0.99 at https://www.copythatpops.com/kathy If all goes well, she’ll be case study #27 for bestsellers! My guest today is Jared Warner from 123 Get Found. He helps people grow and scale their companies with effective online marketing. He basically helps companies get found on the busy, crowded web. It’s all about Getting Found, Getting Results & Getting Smart, but what does that all mean? As Jared says there’s only three things that really matter in business: Am I getting found online? Am I getting results from getting found online? Am I getting smart as I move forward with my online campaigns? Step 3 is really about understanding the economics between steps 1 and 2 and this is something many companies overlook. Are you getting value out of their online campaigns? You have to know your cost per lead and lifetime value of those leads. Without knowing this information it’s not impossible, but it’s very difficult to scale your business accordingly. Getting smart teaches you where you should stop putting your money, and where you should put your money. In the end you’ll get far better results with the exact same budget you previously had. You end up spending your money more effectively. GETTING FOUND is about your sources of TRAFFIC. The more traffic you can create the more often you will be found. Being a guest on podcasts and webinars, attending live events, creating links and referrals, ADWORDS, SEO and even print advertising are ways of being found. You need to be able to measure your results and this is difficult to do with print advertising, which is why Jared is not a huge fan and does not delve into this area for his clients. The next step is to what extent have you been found? Did we get 10,000 or 100,000 visits to our website. How many phone calls did we get? How many downloads occurred, or how many opt in requests did we receive? You then need to work out how much did we spend to bring in 10,000 or 100,000 visits to our website? From this information you can work out the cost per per lead. Jared has attended BNI and other networking events, and he points out that it doesn’t cost you a lot of money to attend, but it does cost you a lot of time, and time is money, but in the end it comes down to how many referrals did you get? What was your ROI, not just for your money, but also for your time? How did Jared learn these techniques? Jared learnt how to do this effectively by actually doing it in his own business. It’s not just theory. Many business people make the mistake of thinking just because they have a business and a website, they’re in business, but this is wrong. This is simply step 1 of a 100 steps. Going Out Of Business Signs Why do people spend money on billboards telling people they’re going out of business? It’s dumb decisions like this that put people out of business in the first place. What they spend on billboards could be used effectively using online marketing and they may have been able to save their business. Ideas Lose Momentum Jared acts quickly and never lets and idea sit in his head too long. Ideas lose momentum if you don’t take action on them immediately. Enthusiasm for an idea can be lost if you don’t take the first few steps to make it a reality. If Jared has an idea, he immediately buys the domain name, because domain names are like real estate, once you have it it’s yours. He then builds a website around the idea, but if he doesn’t like the idea after a period of time, he moves on to his next idea. Not every idea is worth pursuing past the initial first few steps, but you have to take those steps to work this out. What’s more important, having a website that looks really good, or having an average website and being found? Both are important. First, you’ve got to have a clean polished image, because this is a reflection of you, but you’ve got to build specific landing pages to a specific offer. Forget about trying to build SEO, that’s almost out of date. For example if you’re advertising a specific service or product, you don’t send people to your homepage, that’s old thinking, it must go to a specific landing page that gives them the exact information they were looking for and the information you promoted. It takes a lot of time to do it right, but it’s worth the effort. What do people WANT? More importantly though, what do people really NEED. People say they want to be found, but actually they need cash in their pockets, so just getting found is not the full story. It’s about making the phone ring, selling a product, etc. Study Everyday Online marketing changes that much you need to keep up and Jared has attended 12 events so far this year (2017). He usually attends digital marketing, personal development and business events. But do you have the time to attend 12 events? If you don’t, this is why you outsource to someone that does, like http://www.123getfound.com/ For example he attends the Traffic & Conversion conference, but this is such a high level event, it’s not for the business owner who wants to learn a little bit more about FACEBOOK advertising. This is why some business owners should stay in their business and do what they’re good at. Use your skills to make money and use a company like 123 Get Found to do all the other stuff for you. When To Outsource When Jared started his own business he was doing everything, nothing was outsourced. He did his own coding, made his own videos and images, designed his own website and did all his own graphics. As a small business owner there are many hats you have to wear initially, from being your own graphic artist to being your own bookkeeper, but at some point you have to decide if you’re going to keep doing these non-money making activities that consume your time, or outsource to others with more skill. Outsourcing means things are done faster with better results However, you need to start bringing in revenue before you start outsourcing. You need customers, proof of concept and most importantly you need income. You need to get through the early stage growing pains. Your sales pitch needs to be in place, you need to know who your customers, before you contact someone like 123 Get Found. There’s no point getting found until you’ve got something in place to offer or sell. Getting Smart is about knowing how much revenue your generating from your leads. Ad Scent is about keeping the ad on the same trail, just like a bloodhound. You can’t direct people to your homepage when they’ve clicked a link that said you’re offering a 2-For-1 Sale. You had better be telling them the message they were chasing; otherwise they will leave your website quickly and never return. Just directing people to your homepage is not good enough anymore. Keep Videos Short A human’s attention span is less than that of a goldfish – therefore you need to have shorter videos. No one is going to give you 4-minutes, therefore 15 – 45 second videos are excellent and have been proven to work best. One thing all small business owner should do tomorrow? Start shooting short videos and use ad retargeting programs. Strategically Aligned Partnerships Jared Warner built his business on the proven foundation of strategically aligned partnerships. He’s been in the world of entrepreneurship since the late ‘90’s and has learned valuable lessons from both successes and failures. His experience solidifies the fact that strategically aligning yourself with other businesses who are not competing, but who are drawing from the same customer base, will help grow your business faster and build long term relationships with both your customers as well as your referral partners. Dive into this podcast to learn more about Jared’s story and how you, too, can integrate strategically aligned partnerships in order to grow your business for the long game. Leap Strategically Build your business on the side. We all have the same amount of time; don’t binge watch tv, or waste time when you could be building your business. We make a living between 9-5, but we can create a life between 5-9. We fail a lot, but must keep getting up. The best feedback you can get is from the marketplace. Don’t let others tell you what you should/shouldn’t do; it’s not their money or reputation on the line, it’s yours. Don’t quit your day job until you have continual provable income from your business. If your product almost works, then you’ll almost get paid. Don’t be the one who spends money to educate the marketplace so they’ll come around to your idea. You might be right, but do something else. Align Strategically Consider other industries that do not compete with yours, but that your ideal client also buys from. Everyone has other products and services they use. For example; chiropractors, pilates instructors, personal trainers, massage therapists, acupuncturists, or nutrition specialists, etc., are all people who may work with the same clients. Marketers, software developers, web designers, video production specialists, etc., are all possibly working with the same client base. After checking reputation/reviews of potential businesses, approach them and find ways to work with each other and refer to each other and build trust. Make sure they aren’t already referring to others. Refer Strategically Don’t just leave business cards; always find opportunities to work together. Consider seminars, workshops, or any event which allows you to talk to their people and vice versa. Schedule weekly or biweekly 10 minute phone calls with each referral partner. What are 3 things I can do for you? What are 3 things you can do for me? What can we hold each other accountable for this next week? Play the long game and be authentic. If you have 6 referral partners, this only takes 1 hour per week, yet you instantly have access and connections with 6 networks. Final Thoughts From Jared Build your business with the goal of helping customers rather than looking at each as x amount of dollars you’ll bring in. Consider how you can really help your clients. Are you helping them or just asking for money? Take your head out of your laptop, get to events and shake hands in person. Connect and have face to face conversations in order to build real relationships. Connect With Jared jared@123getfound.com 123 Get Found.Com (619) 678-0280
