The disagreement over the concept of white privilege is at the center of many of our political and cultural struggles at the moment. On the Left, white privilege is a bedrock principle, a foundational assumption that motivates much of the discourse around race in America. On the Right, the concept is primarily an object of derision. It's dismissed, mocked and held up as the sign of the Left's moral confusion and obsession with identity politics. To work through this problem, we've brought together a Black conservative philosopher and a white anti-racist activist.Jason D. Hill is a professor of philosophy and the author of five books, including most recently What Do White Americans Owe Black People: Racial Justice in the Age of Post-Oppression. He holds a Ph.D. in philosophy and has been a professional writer and author for more than thirty years. Today we're talking to Professor Jason D. Hill, who teaches philosophy at DePaul University in Chicago. He recently wrote a new book, "What Do White Americans Owe Black People?" in which he examines the historically strained relationship between the two groups of people. We discuss several myths perpetuated by the progressive Left, like systemic racism, the idea that reparations are needed for reconciliation, and the idea that racism is infused into every part of American society. We also talk about some of the shortcomings of the Republican Party in reaching out to black voters, and Professor Hill explains what he'd like to see the GOP do differently to help the black community realize that they indeed do have many conservative values. Lastly, we talk about a much more realistic way to approach difficult conversations about race — one in which no one needs to apologize for their skin color and everyone is treated with respect. --- Today's Sponsors: My Patriot Supply has helped millions of families get prepared & stay safe when times are tough. In this episode Michael Shermer speaks with Jason D. Hill, a black immigrant from Jamaica, about his eloquent appreciation of the American Dream, and why his adopted nation remains the most noble experiment in enabling the pursuit of happiness. Dr. Hill came to this country at the age of 20 and, rather than being faced with intractable racial bigotry, Hill found a land of bountiful opportunity. It has been more than 50 years since the Civil Rights Act enshrined equality under the law for all Americans. Since that time, America has enjoyed an era of unprecedented prosperity, domestic and international peace, and technological advancement. But the dominant narrative, repeated in the media and from the angry mouths of politicians and activists, is the exact opposite of the reality. They paint a portrait of an America rife with racial and ethnic division, where minorities are mired in a poverty worse than slavery, and white people stand at the top of an unfairly stacked pyramid of privilege. Jason D. Hill corrects the narrative in this powerfully conversation based on his eloquent book.
