Solar energy in Ohio has been, pun intended, a pretty hot topic over the past few years as more and more landowners in all parts of the state are being approached about signing leases to utilize their property to collect energy from the sun. That growing interest in the Buckeye State has led to difficult discussions, tough decisions and a divide in opinion across the countryside. On this Our Ohio Weekly, we talk all things solar with two Ohio Farm Bureau experts. 00:00 - Dale Arnold, Ohio Farm Bureau's Director of Energy Policy and Ohio Farm Bureau's policy counsel, Leah Curtis talk about the current issues around Ohio's solar industry and what Farm Bureau members need to know before signing an agreement. 23:50 - On this week's To the Beat of Agriculture, you'll hear from a Butler County farmer who was recently elected to the U.S. Grains Council and about the type of impact that organization makes not only in Ohio, but across the world. 32:20 - Earlier this month, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) was detected in a backyard flock in Ashland County and a commercial chicken flock in Defiance County. Ohio Department of Agriculture State Veterinarian, Dr. Dennis Summers, shares what other poultry farmers should do to protect their flocks and if there is a health concern for consumers. 42:20 - The host of the Ag State of Mind Podcast, Jason Medows, was in Highland County to share his thoughts on farm stress and mental health. He gives his perspective on the stigma of the topics in agriculture and what role the younger generation plays in continuing the conversation.

In this episode, we continue our conversation all about mental health. Today I'm introducing you to Jason Medows. Jason was born and raised on his family's cow calf operation outside of Cuba, Missouri. He grew up playing football and baseball and was involved in his local 4-H. In 2002, Jason left the farm for St Louis College of Pharmacy. He graduated in 2008 with his Doctor in Pharmacy and returned home to work at a local hospital and continue the cow-calf operation he started in college. It was at that local hospital where he met his future wife, Keri. Fast forward 12 years and they have four boys and have purchased another farm of their own. In 2019, Jason began his podcast, Ag State Of Mind, where he combined his medical background with his passion for agriculture to help break the stigma surrounding mental health in agriculture.   In this episode, we'll chat about: The power of healing yourself to heal others How even when things are going well in your life - happy marriage, healthy kids, etc - that doesn't mean you aren't still struggling with your mental health  The real trouble starts when you hide it and don't talk about it because of shame - shame that you aren't “tough” or shame because your life is good and you feel bad that you're struggling  Trying to break the mold of perfectionism in order to be a more realistic example for the next generation  How to help someone else that isn't yet bought in about taking care of their mental health   Make sure to hit subscribe so you don't miss out on future episodes. SHOW NOTES As you all know from listening to the show, I have a very positive outlook on the world of farming and rural living.  I believe that those of us who value this way of life has a lot going for us, and we are very fortunate that our values lie in living this way.  With this in mind, I tend to look at this lifestyle through rose-colored glasses. Alas, the episodes I produce about rural crime definitely demonstrate to me that not all farmers are looking out for other farmers. Interviews with folks like Jason Medows of the Ag State Of Mind Podcast show me that not everyone on farming operations is living in a state of bliss, overwhelmed by the grandeur of this lifestyle. Since I have to admit that there are challenges in this lifestyle, the next logical question is what do we do when we need help with these unique questions?  Who out there has the knowledge and understanding to address the specific life and family challenges of farmers and people living in rural communities? That question led me to today's guest, Elaine Froese.  Elaine is a "farm family coach".  She lives just inside of Canada, above the State Of North Dakota.  Elaine and her husband have been farming for over 40 years, and she has gone through the process of farm transition three separate times during their marriage. Elaine is possibly the only expert in North America dealing with the familial issues involved in the rural and agricultural lifestyle.  And, she understands it from multiple different perspectives - the son who wants to farm, the daughter in law who married the farmer not the farm, the sibling who doesn't want to farm but feels entitled to part of the parent's legacy, and the retiring farmer. Throughout the interview with Elaine, two things became apparent to me.  First, she is a considerable expert and extremely valuable to people in this lifestyle.  Second, there are myriad issues in farm families that never really get talked about publicly.  These need to be addressed.  With a rise in farm divorces and suicides, they really need to be discussed. Thank goodness for Elaine, her expertise, and the books that she has written to help people enjoy this great lifestyle, in spite of the many challenges that can develop.   HOW TO CONTACT ELAINE FROESE: Website: LINK Blog: LINK Facebook: LINK Twitter: LINK LinkedIn: LINK YouTube: LINK Email: elaine@elainefroese.com
