Today on Uncommon Sense, we're discussing the tragic state of the modern world. From the protests in Ireland to growing frustration across Western nations, many people feel as though their voices are no longer being heard by the institutions that claim to represent them. I'll share why I support the right of people to protest and why I believe the demonstrations in Ireland have resonated with so many people around the world. We'll also discuss what I see as a deeper spiritual crisis affecting modern society. Many of the political, cultural, and social problems we face today are symptoms of a broader moral and spiritual decline, one that cannot be solved through politics alone. In this episode:My thoughts on the protests in IrelandWhy so many citizens now feel disconnected from their governmentsThe growing divide between ordinary people and powerful institutionsThe role of faith, morality, and personal responsibility in rebuilding societyWhy I believe many of today's crises point to a deeper spiritual battleWhether you agree or disagree, this episode is an invitation to think critically about the direction of our culture, our governments, and our future.--https://www.youversion.com/bible-app

Discipline is an essential part of parenting, but if done incorrectly, it can wound rather than train. In Part Four of Building Strong Families, Duane Sheriff teaches from Ephesians 6 about the biblical command not to provoke our children to wrath. Every parent faces moments of resistance and frustration, yet God's Word provides wisdom for disciplining with love instead of reacting in anger.By recognizing key attitudes like anger, inconsistency, neglect, and harshness, we can guard our children's hearts and prevent bitterness from taking root. True love sets boundaries with patience, consistency, and grace—always aiming for restoration, not control. Parenting is not about authority alone but about reflecting the Father's heart and preparing our children to live responsibly before Him. Through understanding, humility, and open communication, we can raise sons and daughters who are secure, respectful, and equipped to walk in God's ways.

Every child—and every person—has a fundamental need to know and believe that God loves them unconditionally. This truth is the foundation for overcoming the fears that grip humanity. God's love is based on His character, not based on our actions. In part three of “Building Strong Families,” Duane Sheriff teaches how unconditional love transforms families and sets children free from fear, insecurity, and the need for approval. He identifies four primary fears that often shape children's lives—the fear of faces (people and rejection), fear of fences (obstacles and hardship), fear of failure, and fear of foes (spiritual enemies)—and explains how God's love conquers each one.Parents and grandparents prepare children for life's challenges by teaching them to forgive themselves when they make mistakes and training them to understand the spiritual battles they face. When we truly grasp the depth of God's love, we realize nothing we do can change how much He loves us. Perfect love casts out all fear.

God designed the family as the foundation of society, and His Word provides clear guidance for building homes that thrive. Parenting is a responsibility given by God, involving stages of training, teaching, and transition. As parents, we shape the next generation. In part two of “Building Strong Families,” Duane Sheriff teaches the critical importance of training our children in obedience and honor—not just for their childhood years, but as a foundation for their entire lives. The parallels drawn between child-rearing and our relationship with God are striking. Just as we guide our children, our Heavenly Father guides us. Are we helicopter parents, or are we preparing our children to fly on their own?
Creating Unity in a Divided World In this powerful and emotional episode, Chris and Melissa explore one of the most timely and important topics of our day — unity. The world feels more divided than ever, and yet, as Chris and Melissa remind us, the healing of that division starts at home. Drawing inspiration from past guests like Connor Boyack and Bubba Page, and from recent events in their faith community, Chris and Melissa discuss what it means to “save America at the dinner table.” They share how strong, connected, unified families raise strong, confident kids who bring peace and leadership into the world — and how that ripple of unity begins with the way we talk to each other at home. They also reflect on the late President Russell M. Nelson's message, “Peacemakers Needed,” and how we can apply it in our homes. From resisting anger and contention to learning the art of response over reaction, the episode dives deep into what real peace looks like in practice — even when it's hard. Chris and Melissa open up about their own marriage and parenting journey, from moments of frustration to raising kids who make their own decisions. They discuss what it means to love your children — and one another — through disagreement and imperfection, reminding listeners that there's no such thing as a perfect family, only families committed to growing together. With stories ranging from spiritual reflection to a fun nod to Bob Marley's “One Love,” this conversation is both sobering and hopeful. It's an invitation to look inward, lead your family with compassion, and become a peacemaker — one conversation, one dinner table, and one act of love at a time. Families are the cornerstone of both the Church and society, yet today they are bombarded with overwhelming confusion and challenges. In "Building Strong Families," Duane Sheriff teaches God's timeless blueprint for family, marriage, and raising godly offspring. Drawing from Malachi, Judges, and Psalms, Duane explains how healing the home can ultimately heal the nation.God designed marriage as a covenant, not a contract. By aligning with His design and standing firm in the truth, we can cultivate a legacy of faith that reconnects a generation to biblical principles. Extending grace and restoration to those who have faced struggles in marriage or parenting creates an atmosphere for healing. A single family transformed by God's love can change the course of generations to come.
