Are you waiting to be chosen… or are you choosing yourself? How often do we wait for permission before pursuing the life we really want? Whether it's applying for a new job, reaching out to someone we admire, asking for help or taking the first step towards a goal, it can feel safer to wait for someone else to notice us.In this episode of Inner Work, I reflect on one of the biggest ideas to emerge from my conversation with Clinical Psychologist Cliff Hawkins: the importance of agency, self-belief and learning to raise your hand rather than waiting to be picked.Together, we explore why confidence often follows action, how small acts of courage can change the direction of our lives, and why nobody is coming to rescue us—but that might actually be empowering rather than frightening. If you've ever wondered whether you're holding yourself back, this gentle reflection is for you.
Recorded at the Battle of Ideas festival 2025 on Saturday 18 October at Church House and the Abbey Centre, Westminster. ORIGINAL INTRODUCTION There is no doubt that far too many of our children and young people are not thriving mentally or emotionally in the way that they should be. In 2024, almost 20 per cent of school-aged children in the UK had been diagnosed with a mental-health condition, up from 10 per cent 20 years ago. Meanwhile, the line between ‘learning disabilities' and ‘mental-health issues' has also become increasingly blurred. According to the charity ADHD UK, a diagnosis of ADHD is listed as a ‘mental-health disability' under the Mental Health Act 1990. Over 1.6million pupils in England have been identified as having special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), up 24.9 per cent since 2016, while the number of children with an education, health and care plan (EHCP) has risen by an astonishing 83.4 per cent – up 11.6 per cent in the past year alone. The care minister, Stephen Kinnock, has confirmed that the government is committed to its manifesto pledge to put a ‘mental-health practitioner' into ‘every school in the country'. The idea has widespread support, with the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives offering similar commitments. Already, there have never been so many staff and volunteers working within schools with a specific responsibility for the emotional wellbeing of pupils: senior mental-health leads, educational psychologists, mental-health support teams and more. Access to counselling is available in many schools. Despite this booming school-based ‘mental-health industrial complex', the wellbeing of pupils continues to deteriorate and rates of ‘mental illness' continue to rise. However, a recent Family Education Trust report by Lucy Beney, a qualified counsellor, asks if such interventions are not only ineffective, but perhaps harmful. She discusses everything from ‘diagnostic inflation' and ‘social contagion' to definitions of ‘mental health' and ‘neurodiversity', from the impact of schools encouraging young people to look at life through the subjective filter of their own feelings to the capture of mental-health professional bodies by critical social justice theory. If one fifth of children are suffering so much that they are deemed as having a ‘disorder', should our focus be on where we as parents and teachers are going wrong rather than what's wrong with children? Is school the best place to address such mental distress, however it's categorised? And what are the opportunity costs if classroom time and resources are taken away from academic pursuits that could potentially be more conducive to better mental health? SPEAKERS Lucy Beney counsellor; children's correspondent, Save Mental Health Baroness Joanne Cash life peer and radical Dave Clements writer and policy advisor; contributing co-editor The Future of Community Dr Ashley Frawley sociologist; author, Significant Emotions and Semiotics of Happiness CHAIR Professor Ellie Lee professor of family and parenting research, University of Kent, Canterbury; director, Centre for Parenting Culture Studies

What happens when a licensed clinical social worker walks into an improv class and discovers a powerful clinical tool? In this episode of The Therapy Show, I sit down with Dr. Juda Alcabes, also known as The Improv Therapist, to explore how improv comedy can be used therapeutically to treat anxiety, build intimacy, strengthen couples' connections, and help clients get out of their heads and into the present moment. Dr. Juda shares how taking an improv class on a mental health day eventually led him to develop a clinical framework for bringing improv into therapy sessions. Whether you're a clinician curious about adding more play and experiential work into your practice, or someone who has always wanted to try improv, this conversation is insightful, practical, and fun. In this episode, we discuss: How improv can support anxiety treatment Why play and spontaneity matter in therapy How improv helps clients move from overthinking to experiencing The connection between improv, intimacy, and relationships Why therapists don't need to be performers to benefit from improv How clinicians can thoughtfully integrate unique skills into their work Dr. Juda Alcabes, LCSW is a licensed clinical social worker based in South Florida who specializes in sex and porn addiction. Known as The Improv Therapist, he integrates improv comedy into clinical work with individuals, couples, and groups. He is also a stand-up comedian and improv performer, and he offers consultation for therapists interested in incorporating improv into their own practice. What if your nervous system is paying attention to far more than you realise? In this week's Inner Work, I reflect on my conversation with Health Psychologist Dr Sula Windgassen and explore the idea that our bodies are constantly taking in messages about safety, worth and belonging. We consider what happens when we repeatedly dismiss our own feelings, stay silent when something doesn't sit right, or fill our environments with content that leaves us feeling "less than".This isn't about dramatic life changes. My guest for this episode is Jessi Beyer, a Mental Health Professional, an international TEDx speaker; the #1 best-selling author of 'How To Heal: A Practical Guide To Nine Integrative Therapies That Can Help Release Trauma'; a crisis mental health professional embedded with law enforcement in Snohomish County, Washington; and a negotiator with Region 1 SWAT.Jessi talks passionately about how we can support each other in the workplace and reduce the stigma associated with mental health. And she reinforces the fact that whilst some organisations may think they don't have any mental health issues amongst their teams, the reality is that the actual rate of affliction is something like 1 in 5 people. Listen for Jessi's description of what represents a 'crisis' for each of us as individuals - because it is different for all of us. She then follows this up with some great indicators that may suggest a colleague is having some coping difficulties. This was a fascinating discussion - please do invest the time to listen. You may just save a colleague a lot of pain and suffering by thinking about things slightly differently.Send us Fan MailContact ABM Risk Partnership to optimise your risk management approach: email us: info@abmrisk.com.auTweet us at @4RiskCmeVisit our LinkedIn page https://www.linkedin.com/company/18394064/admin/Thanks for listening to the show and please keep your guest suggestions coming!
Have you ever wondered if starting a podcast could help you grow your practice, build your professional reputation, or share your expertise in a bigger way? In this episode of The Therapy Show, I'm talking to therapists, counselors, social workers, coaches, and mental health professionals who have thought about starting a podcast but aren't sure where to begin. I share what I've learned from my own podcasting journey, including how The Therapy Show evolved into a continuing education platform and how podcasting can help therapists build trust, clarify their message, connect with other professionals, and create a body of work that reflects their expertise. I also talk honestly about why podcasting is not a quick fix. A podcast works best when it has a clear purpose, a specific audience, and a connection to your larger professional goals. In This Episode, I Cover: Why therapists are drawn to podcasting How to clarify your podcast's purpose Why your audience matters more than your microphone How to choose a format that fits your energy and goals Ethical considerations for therapist podcasters Common mistakes therapists make when starting a podcast How podcasting can support a practice, CE business, coaching offer, or consulting service Questions to ask before you hit record Therapists don't need to start a podcast just because podcasting is popular. But if you have a clear audience, a meaningful purpose, and a realistic plan, podcasting can be a powerful way to build trust, share your expertise, and create new professional opportunities. In this episode, I'm joined by Kym Tolson, LCSW for an eye-opening conversation about what AI really means for the future of mental health practice. Together, we unpack some of the biggest myths and misconceptions therapists have about AI, including concerns about privacy, ethics, environmental impact, burnout, and whether technology could ever replace the therapeutic relationship. Kym shares practical ways therapists can begin using AI right now to reduce documentation burden, streamline practice operations, support marketing efforts, and create more sustainable workflows, all while staying clinically grounded and ethically informed. We also talk about why the future of therapy may require clinicians to lean even more into relational skills, clinical judgment, and authentic human connection. Plus, we highlight the free 1.25 NBCC-approved CE training available through Berries Academy, where I'm serving as the course administrator and Kym is the presenter. If AI has felt overwhelming, confusing, or even a little scary, this episode will help you feel informed, empowered, and ready to take the first step.

We're getting more reaction from mental health counselors and therapists today, following a landmark verdict against social media companies Meta and Google. A California jury found that the two companies harmed young users by designing their apps to be addictive. So how are therapists and other mental health professionals reacting to the ruling? Maria Shilaos spoke with Gregory Noel, LMFT, the clinical director of Two Brothas Counseling in Ogden. He says the decision is welcomed by the mental health community, who've been warning of the addictive nature of social media for years now. -------------- RESOURCES: Digital Brain Fog: How Tech Is Rewiring Your Focus and Mood (Dr. Tracey Marks): https://youtu.be/JU3h-qzmeXk?si=7Elbb2rqIukHGqL9 Technology-induced ADHD/ digital brain fog Mechanism 1: Attention residue (residue of the 1st task lingers even after switching from one task to another) Mechanism 2: Dopamine hijacking (brain starts craving a quick burst of novelty, overstimulated and undersatisfied) Mechanism 3: Default mode network disruption (time when the brain is at rest, consistent tech access keeps this offline) Mechanism 4: Prefrontal cortex overload (this has limited fuel; tech is rapidly draining this) Strategy 1: Set digital boundaries Strategy 2: Attention training (focus sprints) Strategy 3: Notification triage Strategy 4: Transition rituals

AP's Lisa Dwyer reports on a therapist strike over AI fears.
Today's episode is a deep dive into tactile defensiveness and sensory distress, especially around clothing. My guest is Kathryn Hamlin-Pacheco, an occupational therapist who helps kids and families understand their brains and bodies through everyday neuroscience. Kathryn will break down what's actually happening in the brain and nervous system when children experience tactile defensiveness, and why clothing can feel so overwhelming for some kids. We talk about the role of co-regulation, how parents can help create positive associations with getting dressed, and practical strategies for supporting children in navigating their sensory experiences with more safety and less stress. This episode is a grounding, compassionate look at sensory processing—and a reminder that when we understand what's underneath the behavior, everything shifts. About Kathryn Hamlin-Pacheco Kathryn (Katie) Hamlin-Pacheco, M.S., OTR/L, ASDCS, is an occupational therapist, former teacher, author, and founder of the Brain Executive Program. Kathryn is an Autism Spectrum Disorder Clinical Specialist (ASDCS) and holds certifications in Neuroscience for Mental Health Professionals and in Brain Structure and Function: Application to Sensory Integration and Processing. She graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a Master's degree in Occupational Therapy, where she also worked with the Virginia Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities program to pursue her desire to be an advocate and leader in pediatric healthcare. She has shared her work at AOTA's Inspire Conference (the world's largest gathering of occupational therapy practitioners!), Sensory Integration Education's international conference, and at William & Mary's Center for Gifted Education. In addition, Katie has written for OT Practice Magazine, Autism Parenting Magazine, Washington Family Magazine, and Stars & Stripes Magazine. Her book, How to Be a Brain Executive: And Get Sensory Sharp!, was a top Amazon release in two categories. Things you'll learn from this episode How tactile defensiveness reflects a nervous system response rather than behavioral resistance Why understanding sensory processing is essential for supporting children with clothing challenges How co-regulation helps children feel safe, connected, and more able to tolerate sensory input Why play and low-pressure practice can make clothing experiences more manageable How creating calm environments and positive associations supports sensory integration over time Why sensory health is a vital part of children's overall well-being Resources mentioned Brain Executive Program (Kathryn Hamlin-Pacheco's website) Kathryn's online Sensory Dressing Course How to Be a Brain Executive: And Get Sensory Sharp! by Kathryn Hamlin-Pacheco Brain Executive Program on Instagram Brain Executive Program on Facebook Deb Dana on Befriending Our Nervous System Using Polyvagal Theory (Tilt Parenting podcast) Dr. Stephen Porges & Karen Onderko on the Safe and Sound Protocol (Tilt Parenting podcast) Dr. Mona Delahooke on the Power of Brain-Body Parenting (Tilt Parenting podcast) Brain-Body Parenting: How to Stop Managing Behavior and Start Raising Joyful, Resilient Kids by Dr. Mona Delahooke Sensory Processing Differences with Carol Kranowitz (Tilt Parenting podcast) The Out-of-Sync Child: Recognizing and Coping with Sensory Processing Differences by Carol Kranowitz Polyvagal Card Deck: 58 Practices for Calm & Change Polyvagal Practices: Anchoring the Self in Safety by Deb Dana Debbie's TedxBerlin talk: What if Feeling Broken Wasn't the End of the Story? You've got the notebook. The voice memos. The Google Doc titled "possible program ideas" you haven't opened in weeks. You're not short on ideas. You're drowning in reasonable options. And somehow that feels worse than having no ideas at all.Because when you're stuck with multiple good directions and still can't get traction, it starts to feel like a you problem. Like you're overthinking it. Not ready. Not disciplined enough. Here's what you need to hear: You're not failing at this. You're misoriented. You're trying to choose before you're positioned to see clearly. And the question you're asking yourself is keeping you stuck.HERE ARE THE 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS:1️⃣ This Isn't Confusion - It's Misorientation – Your brain is doing exactly what it was trained to do: analyse before acting. But when there are multiple good options, analysis mode creates paralysis. Your nervous system reads commitment without clarity as threat, so you stay stuck in research mode. This isn't a motivation problem. It's a starting-point problem.2️⃣ You're Asking the Wrong Question – "What program should I create?" forces comparison, activates imposter syndrome, and assumes you need something novel. The better question: "What problem am I already solving repeatedly, whether I intend to or not?" This shifts you from ideation to pattern recognition, from theoretical planning to lived experience. Most therapists don't need a new idea - they need better visibility on work they're already doing.3️⃣ Depth Creates Blind Spots – If people keep bringing you the same problem without you marketing for it, that's data. But experienced therapists dismiss what feels familiar, obvious, or "too simple." The more expertise you have, the more invisible your skill becomes to you. You're not underestimating the work - you're underestimating yourself.YOU'LL ALSO HEAR:Why therapists trained to assess before acting get stuck when building programsThe nervous system response that keeps you in "gathering information" modeHow to recognize when you're dismissing your most obvious starting pointWhy confusion is often a sign of depth, not failureThe one question that creates grounded momentum instead of endless scanningWhy orientation matters more than urgency when building sustainable practicesRESOURCES:Therapists Rising Programs:The Incubator: therapistsrising.com/incubatorInstagram: @dr.hayleykellySUBSCRIBE & REVIEW:If this episode reduced the frantic energy you've been carrying, subscribe and review on Apple Podcasts. Your reviews help other therapists find conversations that actually shift how they're thinking.Clarity doesn't come from choosing the best idea. It comes from standing in the right place to see what's actually there. You're not behind. You're just facing the wrong direction. What shifts when you ask a better question?

In this compelling follow-up conversation, I welcome back Jonathan Cogburn, a licensed marriage and family therapist from Texas, to explore a nuanced conservative perspective on mental health services in schools. While we've covered many concerns about ideological overreach in school counseling on this podcast, Jonathan makes a thoughtful case for why certain levels of mental health intervention are not just appropriate but indispensable in our current educational landscape. We dive deep into the McKinney-Vento Act and its implications for students experiencing homelessness - a critical issue that most therapists haven't even heard about. Jonathan shares his extensive experience working with behavioral threat assessment teams and reveals surprising data about successfully prevented school attacks. We explore how schools can create positive cultures that prevent violence upstream, the proper boundaries between school support and parental roles, and why some vulnerable student populations desperately need these services. This conversation challenges us to think beyond binary positions about school mental health services, examining what a "just right" balance looks like that serves students while respecting parental authority and avoiding ideological indoctrination.Jonathan Cogburn is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in West Texas who currently works for an agency that provides a variety of support to school districts in his area In that role he delivers state-required mental health training to districts, supports rural school counselors and homeless student liaisons, and co-leads a team of licensed professionals and school counselors that respond to crises and disasters. Are you currently building out your Canadian practice and unsure of how to grow? Or, are you growing your family and having children? How do you manage these two types of growth as a business partner and new parent? In this episode, my guest Kayleen talks about how she places community above competition. We discuss how her value-driven approach to running her practice brought back most of her interns as associates, how she managed planning for maternity leave as a busy practice owner, and her tidbits of advice for listeners. MEET KAYLEEN Kayleen is an RP and cofounder of Roots in Wellness, a group therapy practice in Hamilton, Ontario. She is a validated clinical supervisor with the OAMHP and a council member for the CRPO. Kayleen is passionate about perinatal mental health and helping both clients and supervisees through the transition of parenthood. She is a mama of three littles herself, and a lover of all things nature! Learn more about Kayleen on her practice website, LinkedIn, and Instagram profiles In this episode: What are the OAMHP and CRPO? Managing a private practice while being a committee member Growing a private practice Planning a maternity leave? Mistakes made and lessons learned Advice for listeners What are the OAMHP and CRPO? The OAMHP stands for the Ontario Association of Mental Health Professionals, and the CRPO stands for the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario! Kayleen has been a council member of the CRPO since 2024, but has been working for them since 2019. Managing a private practice while being a committee member Between her commitments to her roles within the CRPO and the OAMHP and running her own Canadian private practice, Kayleen definitely has a lot on her plate! Before the beginning of her private practice journey, Kayleen graduated in 2014 and started working at an agency for a number of years. It was demanding work with a lot of travel and tough cases, and even though Kayleen learned a lot from that experience, she knew at the time that it wasn't something she would do forever. Growing a private practice Kayleen jokes that the growth snuck up on them over time. Initially, in 2019, Kayleen started supervising and took on her first student. This opened up a whole new world for her, as she loved being a supervisor and enjoyed the practice, because many of the interns ended up coming back to work at the practice full-time. Kayleen still sees clients, although she spends more time networking and opening up her practice to the community in new ways - like with a book club! Planning a maternity leave? One of the many tips that Kayleen would give you when it comes to preparing for maternity leave is to give yourself a hefty dose of grace! She also recommends being flexible. Understand that there are many ways of going about maternity leave, so you don't have to do it the same way that other people in different jobs do. Mistakes made and lessons learned Along the way, some of the most prominent lessons that Kayleen learned include: The importance of having boundaries around your notifications and not always being accessible or available. Get admin help sooner than you think you need it! To stop putting so much pressure on yourself to make it as big or successful as soon as possible. Put boundaries down with yourself, and allow yourself to rest as well. Put some money away into an emergency savings fund. Advice for listeners Value your community over competing with them! This episode starts with a raw and necessary conversation between Felicia and Rachel about the current state of the world, from Gaza to media complicity to the breakdown of trust in institutions. Then we shift to our guest, the remarkable Gisselle Pardo, a licensed clinical social worker, public health professional, educator, and advocate. We dig into what it really means to be a social worker right now. We consider what it means to hold space for grief, trauma, and hope in communities facing systemic harm, including the terrifying resurgence of ICE raids in NYC. Gisselle speaks candidly about the devaluation of care work, the cost of choosing this profession, and what it means to show up anyway. We explore institutional betrayal, collective burnout, and why small acts of resistance and humanity still matter. It's not all doom and gloom!
