»4. Quitter's Day has passed. The Super Thingy is coming. And you're still standing. I've been teaching something for years that changes everything. It's called the peaceful base. The idea is simple but powerful: you can't move forward in chaos. You need certain parts of your life settled before you can chase bigger goals. Today I'm sharing the exact framework I use with my mastermind clients. Six areas. A simple rating system. A way to stay aware of what's working and what needs attention. This is how you build a life that actually feels good. Featured Story I just got off a mastermind call where we did something I've been doing for years. We checked in on everyone's peaceful base. These are serious people who get up at 4 a.m. on the West Coast to join me at 7 a.m. Eastern. One person came in with a minus 10 on financial security. We had to work on that. But most people averaged about a 7 or 7.5 across all six areas. That's the sweet spot. I don't expect tens across the board. But when you're consistently above a 6 in time, body, mind, money, relationships, and spirit? You're building something real. You're creating the foundation that lets you move forward without blowing up your life. Important Points The peaceful base framework helps you identify chaos before it derails your progress toward your bigger goals. You measure six specific areas on a 1-10 scale: time, body, mind, money, relationships, and your spirituality. Over time you develop daily awareness that keeps you calibrating throughout the day instead of missing problems. Memorable Quotes "It's impossible to move forward in chaos, so you really need certain things in your life settled well before moving." "Money's not everything, but once you have money you have real options and that freedom provides you true choice." "When you understand meaning and have a purpose in life, you have an anchor that anchors everything else you do." Scott's Three-Step Approach Rate each of the six areas on a 1-10 scale right now to get your current peaceful base snapshot for today's check. Look for anything below a 6 score because that's exactly where chaos lives and what needs your immediate attention. Check in weekly to stay aware and calibrate quickly before those small problems become life-disrupting disasters. Did you know that 43% of people who set New Year's Resolutions quit before the end of January? That's crazy. But there are a ton of reasons why that happens—the biggest one being the intensity that we go after our goals in the first two weeks and we burn ourselves out. Five years ago, we recorded our first episode of Grit & Gravitas with a simple premise: progress starts when you do. That idea feels even more relevant in a culture obsessed with resolutions, trends, and arbitrary dates that supposedly predict when people will fail. “New Year's resolutions bug me, and Quitter's Day bugs me. I don't want to wait for anything for today to be the day,” Anne Carnathan says. In this episode, Anne Deeter Gallaher talks about returning to swimming by simply showing up—no research, no preparation, no audience. Anne Carnathan shares why she started personal training with a friend, both to make her workday less solitary and to support someone she cares about. Anne Deeter Gallaher sums it up: “If you wanted to, you would. I finally got to the day where I wanted to.” Today's business vitamin is simple: whether it's starting a workout, making a phone call, reaching out on LinkedIn, or launching a business, the hardest part is beginning. We can do hard things—and we should.

While every non-alcoholic brand is shouting Dry January, Recess is telling you to quit. Literally. Joining us is Ben Witte, CEO and co-founder of the #1 mocktail brand, to unpack a provocative new campaign that swaps all-or-nothing resolutions for something far more realistic: balance. From a bold manifesto to a full-page New York Times ad timed for “Quitter's Day,” Ben explains why going against the seasonal grain isn't risky—it's exactly why Recess is winning. What You'll Learn in This Episode Why moderation—not elimination—is the real shift happening in drinking culture How going against category conventions can create sharper brand differentiation What most brands get wrong about Dry January and behavior change How narrative-driven branding builds permission to expand into new categories Why “do the unexpected” is more than a creative idea—it's a leadership strategy Episode Chapters (00:00) Why Recess Is Telling People to Quit (01:00) The Myth of Sober Curious and the Rise of Moderation (04:30) Why Dry January Is Losing Relevance (06:45) Anti-Perfectionism as Brand Strategy (09:45) The Hidden Downsides of Rules and Streaks (13:00) Naming, Narrative, and Building Red Bull for Relaxation (18:00) Knowing When to Push Against Conventional Wisdom (25:00) Brands That Make Us Smile About Ben Witte Ben Witte is the CEO and co-founder of Recess, a leading functional beverage company built around the idea of calm, balance, and taking a break from modern stress. Coming from a Silicon Valley background rather than traditional CPG, Ben has consistently challenged category norms—shifting the conversation from sobriety to moderation and from ingredients to outcomes. Under his leadership, Recess has grown into a category-defining brand spanning mocktails, mood drinks, and relaxation-focused products sold nationwide. What Brand Has Made Ben Smile Recently? Ben points to a Thanksgiving campaign from Tito's Handmade Vodka that flipped the familiar “Turkey Trot” on its head with the idea of a “Turkey Rot”—leaning into cultural truth with humor and self-awareness. The campaign stood out by inverting expectations, tapping into real behavior, and reminding us that the best brand moments often come from saying the quiet part out loud. Gestern war Quitter's Day.
Quitter's Day is when most people quietly fall off their goals — not with a big decision, but by drifting. In this episode of The MindShare Podcast, David Greenspan delivers a no-fluff reality check on why momentum dies in January and how the choices you make right now determine whether spring feels exciting… or desperate. This isn't a motivational episode. It's a strategic one.David breaks down:What Quitter's Day actually representsWhy emotional thinking kills momentumThe difference between strategic results and emotional resultsHow small compromises quietly derail big goalsWhy pipeline pressure in April is created in JanuaryWhat to track daily if you want real momentumIf you're a REALTOR®, entrepreneur, or business owner who wants to stay disciplined when most people drift, this episode will force an honest look at what you're doing — and what you're avoiding.
We would love to hear from you! Text us any feedback. As we step into a new year, many of us feel a mix of hope, pressure, exhaustion, and uncertainty. In this opening episode of Season 3, Nikki invites you to pause, reflect, and reframe what it really means to move forward. This episode kicks off a three-part series centered on running your own race, not chasing comparison, perfection, or unrealistic expectations, but pursuing faithfulness in the life God has entrusted to you. Nikki explores why so many goals fade after the initial excitement of a new year, what “Quitter's Day” reveals about our habits, and why lasting change is built on consistency, clarity, and grace...not hype.Through a powerful track-and-field story, honest reflection, and a biblical lens on habits, discipline, and stewardship, this conversation challenges listeners to consider not just the new habits they want to add, but the old ones they may need to let go of. Nikki unpacks how our daily choices shape who we are becoming, why faithfulness matters more than speed, and how staying in the race, even imperfectly, leads to real formation over time.Whether you're feeling energized, discouraged, or somewhere in between, this episode offers encouragement to keep showing up, adjust instead of quit, and remember that growth is a process. This isn't about a “new you”, it's about becoming more aligned, more intentional, and more faithful in the race you've been given.Next week, we'll continue the conversation by talking about clarity and how having a clear “why” changes everything about the decisions we make and the goals we pursue.JOIN ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Follow Along @ - https://www.instagram.com/nikkicronksmith/
In this episode, Robert and Sharla dive into National Quitter's Day—the second Friday in January when most New Year's resolutions start to fizzle out. Inspired by data from the fitness app Strava, they explore why goals fail, with a special focus on relationship goals like regular date nights or weekly check-ins. The problem isn't you; it's the plan! They break down three major culprits: goals not aligning with your unconscious values, focusing on outcomes instead of building systems through daily rituals, and failing to prepare for inevitable obstacles.Key highlights include:A personal story from Sharla about how a health scare shifted her values and made motivation effortless.Real-life examples of couples infusing laughter into check-ins to make goals stick. The power of "rituals of connection" for compounding small actions into big relationship wins.An introduction to the WOOP technique (Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan) for turning wishes into actionable strategies.Whether you're feeling the Quitter's Day slump or just want to level up your partnership, this episode offers practical tweaks to realign, rebuild, and resilience-proof your goals. It's January. We're past Quitter's Day.And if you've ever quietly stopped believing that change is possible—for your health, your habits, or your vegan practice—this episode is for you.In this re-introduction to Vedge Your Best, Michele shares why most New Year's resolutions fall apart not because people are lazy or unmotivated, but because they're using the wrong mindset for change. This episode explores the powerful shift from outcome-based thinking (“I'll feel proud when I get there”) to a process-based mindset—and why that shift changes everything, not just when it comes to veganism, but in every area of life.Drawing on lived experience, behavioral psychology, and a very human understanding of how change actually works, Michele explains why treating veganism as a practice—rather than a pass/fail identity—creates consistency, confidence, and momentum over time.In this episode, we cover:What “Quitter's Day” reveals about how most people approach goalsWhy big moments rarely create lasting changeThe difference between an Outcome Mindset and a Process MindsetHow perfectionism and all-or-nothing thinking sabotage progressWhy focusing on systems, habits, and practice calms your nervous systemWhat's happening in your brain when you stop chasing resultsWhy veganism works better as a practice, not a performanceSimple ways to shift your thinking today, without overhauling your lifeIf you've ever:Started over… againFelt like you “should” be further alongGiven up on goals because they felt exhausting or fragileWanted to move in a more plant-based or vegan direction but felt stuckYou're in the right place. This episode is an invitation to stop chasing perfect outcomes—and start building a process that actually supports the life you want to live.Because how you go vegan is how you do everything.Subscribe & Review:If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe and leave a review on your favorite podcast platform. This episode is for followers of Jesus who feel their New Year's resolution fading on Quitter's Day and want to reclaim their faith, consistency, and daily habits with God. Ryan shares honest stories about anxiety, a draining development project, and unexpected provision, along with practical rhythms like fasting, simple workouts, daily Bible reading, journaling, and reflecting on Deuteronomy 8, so you can stop quitting on yourself, trust God's timing, and keep showing up one day at a time.
The start of a new year feels like the perfect time to reset and refocus. This often takes the form of New Year's resolutions. There is a great power in making a clear statement about what you want and why you want it. The problem is (and I'm sure you have experienced this yourself), simply making a resolution does not guarantee success. That's why the first Friday of January is often referred to as Quitter's Day because it is when most people ditch their resolutions. Making the decision for a fresh start is not the problem. Thinking a resolution is enough is the problem. To achieve positive change in the new year we need a structure that supports our growth and clears any emotional resistance in the way of our goals. This week in the podcast I share a simple process that will shift you from toothless New Year's resolutions into creating meaningful change. Listen to learn how to create a compelling goal that you can buy into emotionally AND a simple process to help you to tap for all the resistance that comes up. Ten minutes of tapping a day will create a whole new world for you. Support the podcast! You can give up on your new year’s resolutions now! It’s officially “Quitter’s Day.” Joey tried to spend some time alone in nature for some peace in quiet. He wanted to listen to nature sounds like birds and the wind, but he ended up hearing dogs barking, someone playing an oboe, and kids yelling instead. People are embracing analog trends this year to help them disconnect. These include writing handwritten letters, using a paper planner, and using an old alarm clock. Hot Tea: Zach Bryan’s new album includes some lyrics that seem to shade his ex-girlfriend. Tom Brady is getting backlash for doing a Pizza Hut commercial. A black bear has finally been removed from a man’s basement after it’s lived there since Thanksgiving. A girl found a grocery receipt from 1997 and compared the prices of items to their prices now. Everything is much more expensive now. Joey has been taking piano lessons for a full year now and wants to show his skills, but he is nervous. Lucky 7 for Dollywood tickets Joey performed a four-song piano recital to show off his new skills! He also had Nancy and Karly sing along to Amazing Grace. My Strange Addiction is coming back to TV, and one episode is about a girl who snorts her food to eat it. It grosses us all out. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It’s Quitter’s Day! The second Friday of January is when roughly 80% of New Year’s resolutions quietly disappear. From gym memberships collecting dust to the other goals we swore would stick. Greg and Holly take a look at their own resolutions, why this day hits so hard, and why it might actually be normal.

January hits harder than most people expect. In the Season 8 premiere of The MindShare Podcast, David Greenspan breaks down why the pressure of “starting over” in a new year drains even experienced REALTORS®, mortgage professionals, and business owners — and how to restart without burning yourself out.Sparked by a real coaching conversation with a 26-year veteran who just doubled her production in 2025, this episode tackles the mental weight that comes with a reset year, the fear of falling behind, and the mistake most people make by measuring results before their actions have had time to compound.David explains why January isn't hard because of laziness — it's hard because of fatigue — and why progress over results is the only mindset that actually builds momentum. If your pipeline feels light, your energy feels off, or you're already questioning whether you're on track in 2026, this episode will help you refocus on daily actions, systems, and discipline — without hype, guilt, or burnout. This isn't about motivation. It's about execution — one day at a time.00:00 – Welcome to Season 8Why January pressure hits so fast03:40 – The weight of “starting over”Why even great years feel heavy in January10:05 – Quitter's Day explainedWhy 80% of people fall off by mid-January16:20 – One day at a time isn't soft — it's strategicWhy daily actions beat annual pressure23:10 – Progress over resultsWhy pipeline anxiety disappears when actions are tracked30:45 – Systems vs motivationHow drift actually happens38:20 – How to reset without burning outA simple, repeatable execution framework45:10 – Final action sequenceExactly what to focus on for the next 30 days
The weekend is here and the temps are going to drop as this rain shifts to snow sometime tomorrow. But I don't mind…I'll be inside watching football all weekend!!!! Today is "Quitter's Day", the day you're most likely to drop your New Year's resolution. Already?? We talked about what some people are doing to help battle against that, and also discussed a woman's viral video of her cat deleting all her resolutions. In sports, Miami beat Ole Miss last night to advance to the College Football National Championship game, a look at this weekend's Wild Card schedule, the latest on Jordan Love's status for the Packers/Bears game along with some all-time stats from the rivalry. Plus, the Bucks play tonight in LA and the Badgers are in Michigan tomorrow. We let you know what's on the boob-tube this weekend and what's new in theaters. Plus, a Fortnite/South Park collab is dropping today. Elsewhere in sports, the Dolphins have fired their head coach, Giannis talks about asking for a trade, and the NHL announces next season's Winter Classic game. Cool story about some missing letters that are finally getting delivered after disappearing for 70+ years, and for the first time ever…the Puppy Bowl is going to feature senior dogs looking to get adopted! A grocery receipt from 1997 is going viral, and Brian talked about his "poverty meal" from earlier this week. Doc joined us to talk racing thanks to County Materials in Holmen. And more & more people are trying to put their phone down and switch to something analog to keep them entertained & occupied. Here's a list of some of the top analog activities people are pursuing instead of doom-scrolling. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a woman who supposedly snorts all her food, a horse that shit all over a Target store, a woman who woke up inside a body bag at a funeral home, a couple that have a very unique OnlyFans account, and apparently ski jumpers are injecting their junk with all sorts of stuff to help them gain an advantage on the competition.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's the first episode of 2026, and we're flipping New Year's resolutions on their head. I'm joined by my best friend (and the woman who helped bring this podcast to life), Keira Brinton, on the pod today, where we talk about WHY January pressures set so many of us up to fail!! In this conversation, Keira and I talk about how to start this year in a way that actually matches real life, real energy, and real healing. We go deep on integrity, self-trust, cycles (in nature + in your body), and the mindset shifts that turn “starting over” into steady momentum. In this episode, we talk about:Why “New Year, New You” hits hardest in the coldest, darkest season—and why that mattersThe idea that a 500-year-old calendar system isn't a good blueprint for motivation (Gregorian calendar history) Encyclopedia Virginia+2HISTORY+2Why most people quit early—and how to stop making that mean something about you.The real foundation: integrity with yourself (and why overcommitting breaks self-trust)“Your pace is allowed to be your pace”—and how cycles apply to reinventionA mindset experiment that shows how your brain “fills in the gaps” based on what you focus onPrayer/gratitude as a frequency shift (moving from “please help me” to “thank you, it's already here”)The rules that shaped my life (Bob Parsons' “16 Rules”) and the ones that still guide me today Bob ParsonsGentle content note: This episode includes discussion of suicidal ideation and mental health struggles. What to do after listening (simple action steps):Instead of a January overhaul, choose one tiny “Kaizen” move you can repeat daily. Happy January 1st—and happy Day 1 of Dry January (if you're doing it). I love that this episode drops on the very first day of 2026 because if you've been thinking, “I can't do another year like last year…” this is your sign. In today's episode, I'm joined by two of my favorite humans (and two of my best sober friends): Gill Tietz from the Sober Powered Podcast and Suzanne Wayre from The Sober Mom Life Podcast. The three of us have been “text buddies” for over five years (yes, it's basically a full-time job), and we wanted to get together to help you make this Dry January different—especially if you've tried before and found yourself back in the drinking cycle by Day 4… or Day 14… or the infamous second Friday in January (aka “Quitter's Day”). We're talking about what actually helps you keep going when motivation fades, real life hits, and your usual reasons for drinking show up (stress, boredom, parenting, work, relationships, feelings… and yes, even IKEA furniture). If you want 2026 to feel better, calmer, clearer, and more like you—this episode is for you. Since 1908, the secular New Year has been marked by the famous “ball drop”—a moment meant to symbolize a fresh start. Yet the phrase “dropping the ball” has come to mean something very different: missed opportunities, abandoned commitments, and resolutions that don't last.In this shiur, we explore the deeper irony of that image, especially in light of the well-known reality that many New Year's resolutions fade quickly—so much so that the second Friday of January is often called “Quitter's Day.”Drawing on a teaching from Reb Yaakov of Husiatin in the name of the Apter Rav, we examine the idea that January 1st can actually be a day of merit for the Jewish people—not in a spirit of judgment or comparison, but as a revealing contrast of values. While secular culture often marks new beginnings with celebration and levity, Judaism sanctifies beginnings through meaning, commitment, and connection to Hashem. Our life is not about escape from responsibility, but about deeper alignment with who we are meant to become. This shiur is not about “us versus them,” but about understanding what makes Jewish beginnings different—and how those differences can help us build lasting growth, clarity, and spiritual direction. In this deeply personal farewell episode, I reflect on seven years of Lessons from a Quitter as I step into a 2026 sabbatical—unsure what comes next. I share why this podcast was worth starting long before it was "successful," and how creating something scary reshaped my confidence, career, and life. We unpack letting go of metrics, redefining success, building meaningful community, and why you don't need to be an expert to begin. This episode is an invitation to honor your curiosity, trust the messy middle, and finally start the thing you can't stop thinking about.
As we step into 2026, many of us feel the pull to create meaningful change—to eat better, move more, and build habits that truly support our wellbeing. Yet so often, these intentions don't stick. Why do most New Year's resolutions fail by mid-January? In this timely replay episode, host Harmony Slater reconnects with health and nutrition coach Layne Stowell for an honest, practical conversation about sustainable habit change. Together, they explore why the all-or-nothing approach sets us up for failure, what actually creates lasting transformation, and how to build realistic habits that you can maintain throughout the entire year. This episode is packed with actionable insights on mindful eating, movement, stress management, and creating small changes that lead to big, lasting results—without extremes and without burnout. What You'll Learn Understanding Why Resolutions Fail The psychology behind "Quitter's Day" in January Why doing too much too fast guarantees failure How our childhood food habits shape adult eating patterns The biochemistry of food cravings and comfort eating The Science of Sustainable Change "Act the way you want to feel": Why waiting for motivation keeps you stuck The power of "consistently good" over "inconsistently perfect" How pride and dopamine create lasting habit loops Why starting small actually gets you further than grand gestures Practical Habit-Building Tools The Ripple Effect Habit: Identifying the one habit that makes everything else easier The Pause Technique: Creating mindful awareness before reaching for food How to use your calendar to prioritize yourself (not give yourself the "scraps" of your day) Celebrating without food: Finding new ways to reward yourself Nutrition & Movement Wisdom The importance of protein-rich breakfasts (20-30g by 10am) Why movement after meals stabilizes blood sugar and boosts metabolism The truth about intermittent fasting for different bodies How to fight afternoon fatigue without caffeine or sugar Key Quotes "We change best by feeling good. We're going to change by feeling good, not by feeling bad." — Layne Stowell "Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. Doing something will always be better than doing nothing." — Layne Stowell "We're very good at giving ourselves the scraps of our day. There's no such thing as having leftover time in this day and age." — Layne Stowell "Act the way you want to feel instead of waiting for the feelings to show up and then take the action." — Layne Stowell "Every choice we make is a vote for the person we want to become." — Layne Stowell "You are the type of person who follows through, not the type of person that you can't trust your own word to." — Layne Stowell Guest Bio Layne Stowell is a health and nutrition coach specializing in weight loss through sustainable habit and behavior change. The WIP Midday Team takes you around the NFL on everything you missed from this weekend of NFL football.
In this deeply reflective episode of Lessons from a Quitter, I share the 10 core lessons I wish I could tattoo on your brain before stepping away for my first sabbatical in seven years. This episode is about releasing shame, trusting your humanity, and letting go of the pressure to have life figured out. We talk about why burnout isn't a personal failure, why growth matters more than outcomes, and how changing your mind is a sign of wisdom—not weakness. If you're stuck between quitting and staying, this episode invites you to be gentler with yourself and redesign a life that actually fits you.
In this deeply personal episode, I share why I decided to take a sabbatical after seven years of building Lessons from a Quitter. I unpack what burnout actually looked like for me, the many possible reasons behind it, and why the "why" ultimately mattered less than listening to what I needed. We talk about uncertainty, privilege, identity, people-pleasing, and the fear of stopping when things aren't broken. This episode is an honest reflection on letting go of what's good, creating space to rest and rethink, and trusting yourself enough to pause—even without a clear next plan.
