How do I build self-confidence? Will losing weight finally make me happy? How do I break free of self-shame and diet culture? What does self-love even mean? How do I create a lifestyle I actually love and pursue the dreams on my heart? Welcome to Climbin
This episode feels so bittersweet, because it's going to be my last one for a while. This has been an extremely hard decision for me, because I've built an incredible community since starting my podcast. Whether this is the first episode you've tuned into, or you've been with me from the beginning, I just want to let you know how truly, TRULY grateful I am for you, and how near and dear you are to my heart! I don't think this will be goodbye forever in this space, but more of a goodbye for now. While a podcast pause is happening, we're also talking about the elephant in the room today. I'm not necessarily making fun of myself here (but...I kind of am too). I recently had someone comment on my weight - specifically, telling me I've gained weight. Even though this was really difficult to hear, it's also true, because I HAVE gained weight. Fortunately, I already know how important it is to take care of our inner child, and do the necessary work to care for and love ourselves and not relying on others to do so. Ultimately, I want you to know that you are ALREADY enough, and worthy, and loved - no matter your weight or size. Please continue to show up as your unique, vibrant, and magnetic self, because no one can take that away from you!In this episode, we chat about:An amazing speaking opportunity + retreat I was able to experience in Mexico Thinking about your inner child/the little girl version of yourself, and what she would love about you now as an adult womanRandom messages from strangers on the internet that make all of your insecurities and negative beliefs come flooding back inWhy we MUST have radical self acceptance and self compassion so we won't be easily hurt and brought down by the outside worldHow I've continued to evolve as a business owner and person over the last few yearsMy difficult decision to pause the podcast, and what's coming up in my next season Resources & Links:Book a Power Hour Coaching SessionLearn more about partnering with me as a speakerInquire about advertising on the Climbing with Coach Kiah podcastCheck out the Backroad Cowgirls site!Shop the Coach Kiah Store. I have a very fun episode to share with you today! My good friend, Emily Reuschel, is joining me on the podcast, and we're talking about something we both TOTALLY nerd out about - habits! Since we're approaching the end of 2023, Emily and I thought it would be beneficial to dive more into habits and share some tactical tools and takeaways to help you re-evaluate your current habits, or re-establish new ones all together. We both feel very passionately about habits, because they can really enhance the FULL 360 view of your life. The power of tiny habits has majorly impacted our businesses, health journeys, and personal growth journeys. Emily Reuschel is a farmer's wife, mom of three, entrepreneur, motivational speaker, podcast host, and the leader of retreats and masterminds that propel rural women toward their truest, most-aligned goals and priorities. She helps other rural women get clear on what they want, release the inner dialogue that tells them it's impossible, and go after the goals that are keeping them awake at night …. without giving up the small-town life they love.In this episode, we will cover:Why you don't need to wait until the new year to start creating new habits and practicing intentionalityKnowing your current habits that are already in place, and understanding how they're serving you (and how they're not)Why small, healthy habits lead to MORE small, healthy habitsThe dangerous trap of comparing yourself to what you were like in previous seasons of lifeLearning to give yourself grace and embracing progress over perfectionMy personal habits I'm committing to for the next 32 daysKiah's six habits she is committing to for the next 82 daysPracticing intentionality and mindfulness in a way that cares for your mental, emotional, AND physical healthHow Emily's upcoming Ascend retreat can help you kickstart 2024 and really transform your life in a powerful wayResources & Links:YouDoYou82Join us at the Ascend RetreatAtomic Habits by James Clear [affiliate link]Book a Power Hour Coaching SessionLearn more about partnering with me as a speakerInquire about advertising on the Climbing with Coach Kiah podcastCheck out the Backroad Cowgirls site!Shop the Coach Kiah Store. Hi, my name is Kiah and I am a recovering people pleaser. I'm introducing myself like I'm at a people pleasers anonymous meeting and honestly, if those groups don't exist maybe they should. As a people pleaser, I have had a tendency in my life to keep my thoughts and feelings to myself because I didn't want to rock the boat, upset people, or just generally be uncomfortable. I saw my thoughts and feelings as a me problem and I didn't want to burden anybody else with them. There are some problems with this which we'll get into in a second, but as a recovering people pleaser, one of my main goals I've been working on is being brave with my words. In this episode, we chat about:You aren't alone in your people pleasing waysThe more we internalize our feelings, the scarier they feel and the harder they are to manageKeeping your emotions and feelings bottled up doesn't serve you or othersThe power of journalingResources & Links:Join us for an Ireland Retreat!Book a Power Hour Coaching SessionLearn more about partnering with me as a speakerInquire about advertising on the Climbing with Coach Kiah podcastCheck out the Backroad Cowgirls site!Shop the Coach Kiah Store. Social media… What a wonderful, terrible place. Am I right? I have a love-hate relationship with it. I'm so grateful it is a way that I can connect with so many of you, I have made some of my very closest friends through social media, and I've also learned a lot in the space. But, it can also be a source of a lot of stress and anxiety for me. It can feel like keeping up with joneses as a small business marketing online and lord knows it can lead me down a spiral of comparison and yep, envy.BUT, it's not all bad. In fact, I've come to realize that some of these uncomfortable emotions, like jealousy, can be really helpful when we stop long enough to get curious and learn from them, which is what we're chatting about today. And it's not just something we feel scrolling social media either. Let's dive in! In this episode, I chat about:The difference between envy and jealousy The reminder that social media doesn't show the whole story of someone's life How envy can be a guiding light for the things we want in our lifeCelebrating those that you envyResources & Links:Join us for an Ireland Retreat!Book a Power Hour Coaching SessionLearn more about partnering with me as a speakerInquire about advertising on the Climbing with Coach Kiah podcastCheck out the Backroad Cowgirls site!Shop the Coach Kiah Store. It might sound silly to some people, but back in high school (and long after) I had a personal rule to never let my legs show above my knees. Along with that rule, I had several other rules on a long list of conditions for my own self-acceptance. I have since been working on overcoming those rules, and I am celebrating myself for loving and accepting my body in lots of different ways. Seemingly small ways that actually mean a lot to me. And I want to celebrate you for the steps you're taking too.In this episode, we chat about:Rules I made for myself in the past of how to dressHaving lists of conditions of our own self-acceptanceHow to combat past conditioned shame that might still creep up Celebrating the small wins and the baby steps that you're taking todayEmpower women in the baby steps they are taking to love themselvesResources & Links:Book a Power Hour Coaching SessionLearn more about partnering with me as a speakerInquire about advertising on the Climbing with Coach Kiah podcastCheck out the Backroad Cowgirls site!Shop the Coach Kiah Store. If you're listening to this in real time, we are just a couple weeks away from hitting the middle of the year. We typically think about setting goals and casting big visions for our lives and our careers at the beginning of a new year, but I think it's important that we make time throughout the year to check-in with ourselves, check in on our progress, and reevaluate if we're still going in the right direction or even climbing the right mountain. Things change, and it's okay for our direction to change as a result of that. But if we keep just our heads down and never assess how we're feeling and if the path we're on is still even aligned, we may reach the destination only to discover we wish we had gone a different direction. So, this week, let's ask ourselves some check-in questions and explore how we can set some aligned intentions for the rest of the year moving forward. Let's dive in!In this episode, we'll chat about:Assessing the areas in your life where you feel like you're thriving vs. falling short How is your progress on your goals and do your goals still align with the person you want to become? If you didn't set goals for yourself at the beginning of the year, what might your goals look like for the remainder of the year?Guidepost check-inYou are already manifesting everything in your life, you might as well intentionally curate the life you want The impact vision boards have made on my life Resources & Links:Join the Vision Board Workshop party! In this episode, I have the joy of welcoming a long awaited guest, my very own husband, Brent Burchett! When I first started this podcast about two years ago, I asked Brent to be a guest on the podcast and much to my dismay, he said no! He then agreed that if I made it to 100 episodes, then he'd be a guest on the show. So here we are! 100 episodes into the Climbing with Coach Kiah podcast and he kept his word. Brent Burchett serves as Executive Director of the San Luis Obispo County Farm Bureau. His 15-year career in agriculture and public policy has included service at the local, state, and federal levels of government, including the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, Kentucky Soybean Association, Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council, Kentucky Secretary of State, and the Office of U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell. Burchett is a proud graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture and the Martin School for Public Policy and Administration. He grew up working on his family's grain and tobacco farm near the western Kentucky town of Murray, and lives today in San Luis Obispo with his wonderful wife, Kiah. We recently got home from our trip to Europe and I've been doing a lot of reflection. Yes, our trip to Europe included its fair share of stunning sights, breathtaking historical visits, unbelievable food, relaxing poolside, and more aperol spritzes than I can count. “Compared to what?” This was a question my grandpa would always ask us when we chatted.Even if all I was asking him was “how are you doing?” It was a powerful lesson in perspective, in realizing that everything we think, believe, and feel is always in the context of what we're comparing it to. So in today's episode, I'm challenging you with this question and the power of perspective. In this episode, we'll chat about:However you choose to describe something, is in comparison to something else The summertime body comparison struggle So much of our body image journey is unpacking where our thoughts came fromWe get to take responsibility for our own thoughts and feelings and the perspective we chooseResources & Links:Learn more about partnering with me as a speakerInquire about advertising on the Climbing with Coach Kiah podcastShop the Coach Kiah Store. Today we have a special guest coming to us all the way from Texas! On this episode, Katie Beal Brown shares her journey and advice of building a brand that celebrates your roots.Katie Beal Brown is a fourth-generation West Texan, born and raised in Midland, TX. Growing up, some of her fondest memories were from the time spent with her grandparents out on their family's ranch in Far West Texas near Fort Davis. With years of experience at industry-leading agencies, she set out on a new venture to build her own brand, Lone River, celebrating her roots in West Texas. Lone River pioneered the tequila-style hard seltzer category with its introduction of Lone River Ranch Water and more recently Lone River Ranch Rita. Lone River now leads the tequila-style seltzer category as the #1 Ranch Water in the U.S. Katie continues to lead the business on a day-to-day basis, as CEO of the brand and works closely with Diageo leadership to build further on Lone River's success. In this episode, we'll chat about:The story of her pivot from working in advertising in New York to moving back to Texas to launch an entire brand and journey Measuring success by how far we've come and what we've already accomplished instead of what's yet to comeAs an entrepreneur, having to get comfortable making decisions with an element of unknownThe power of a brand and having a story behind it to tell Finding ourselves right where we're at and focusing on belonging instead of fitting inResources & Links:The Gap and the Gain by Dr. Benjamin Hardy & Dan Sullivan [affiliate link]Learn more about partnering with me as a speakerInquire about advertising on the Climbing with Coach Kiah podcastCheck out the Backroad Cowgirls site!Shop the Coach Kiah Store. This year, I planted my very first garden, or as I like to call it, my “yarden.” I've partnered with my local farmer-owned co-op Farm Supply Company for the process. What you need to know is that historically, I don't have a great track record with plants. I either drown them with too much love and water or just forget they exist entirely until they shrivel up and die. I'm working on finding the happy in-between.I took on this project to prove to myself once again that new habits can be formed, identities can shift, and maybe I do have a green thumb after all! Time will tell. But so far, things are going better than expected and I've learned a lot, not just about gardening, in the process, but also about myself. So in today's episode, I'm sharing 5 things my yarden is teaching me.In this episode, we'll chat about:Getting curious about the identities that we hold true about ourselves and deciphering if they are actually true or if we've just believed them for so long Creating space to grow into your full potential What negativity bias is and how it impacts our thoughts Boundaries show love and respect to ourselves and to others Resources & Links:Farm Supply CompanyLearn more about partnering with me as a speakerInquire about advertising on the Climbing with Coach Kiah podcastShop the Coach Kiah Store. Healing my relationship with money has been an ongoing journey. I grew up always feeling like there was too little of it in the world and a lot of scarcity around my ability to make money which REALLY came to the surface when I became an entrepreneur. To be fully transparent, I'm still working on that, but I feel like I've come a long way. So in today's episode, I talk about how money is abundant, time is not.In this episode, we'll chat about:Our plans to spend three weeks in Europe! I first met today's guest, Leeana Tankersley, a couple months ago in small town Kansas. As total strangers, I had the privilege of being her roommate at the Cultivating Courage Conference. I recently got home from Emily Reuschel's ASCEND retreat which brings rural women together who are ready to find community, growth, and step into the next chapter of their lives. This is a really exciting week for me. As I'm recording this, I'm getting ready to head to Fort Worth, TX. I have been chosen as an honoree of this year's Cowgirl Magazine Cowgirl 30 Under 30. As I've been preparing for this amazing opportunity, I noticed a lot of feelings of imposter syndrome coming up in me. Things like, “Do I even deserve this award?” and, “Am I worthy of this honor?” So while I know these aren't true, I also know I'm not the only one who has experienced these feelings. As a dreamer, I tend to get caught up in the future, dreaming of big bold audacious dreams for my life. It's great, but constantly living in the future has a tendency to steal my attention from being present in the moment. Aware of that pitfall, one of my guideposts for this year has been to romanticize my life. Not the one I'm creating for myself in the future, but the one I'm living in right here and now. The 5 Ways to Romanticize Your Life are: Reflect back on the growth you've already experienced to root yourself in gratitude for where you are. Taking an intentional moment to tune into all five senses: smell, touch, sight, taste, sound Create a meaningful and nostalgic playlist that represents your life in this season Capture memories and make mini documentaries Asking yourself in real time, “What am I going to miss about this season one day when it's over?” Resources & Links: The Gap and the Gain by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy [affiliate link] Learn more about advertising on the Climbing with Coach Kiah podcast Shop the Coach Kiah Store. This might be a weird question… but does your wardrobe spark joy? How do you feel when you open up your closet? Does your closet make you feel shame? If so, then it's time for a refresh. What would it feel like to open up your closet and feel joy? To feel peace? To feel ease? Let's talk about how you can create those feelings in that space for yourself. I have broken up with my scale. Here's the thing: scales aren't bad. They are a hunk of metal and plastic, there is nothing moral about them. They are an inanimate object that's job is to provide data. And that data isn't even bad! Whether it's higher or lower than you'd like, it's simply a string of numbers measuring a mass. Now, all that said, our relationship with this totally neutral object may be anything but neutral. And I think our society has been conditioned to put more weight into what it says, pun intended, than is actually helpful for our overall health. Today I'm going to discuss 7 ways to measure health without a scale. So, if you are exploring the idea of breaking up with scale while also still wanting to focus on your health, this one is for you! In this episode, we'll chat about: Weight obsession along with rampant diet culture is actually hurting us more than it's helping It's not inherently BAD to want to lose weight but looking at weight as the sole measure of health is bad because there are so many other ways to do so Health does not LOOK a certain way and weight is NOT the best indicator of health The 7 ways to measure health without a scale Resources & Links: FREE Healthy Habits Tracker Emily Reuschel's ASCEND retreat A Court of Thorns book series [affiliate link] Learn more about advertising on the Climbing with Coach Kiah podcast Shop the Coach Kiah Store. Growing up as a closeted gay kid in the Midwest, Derek sought to find relevance through achievement. It worked. He rose through youth leadership organizations through his mid to late teens, and eventually, started a career in leadership development and training in the food and agriculture sector. Derek created his relevance through his relationship with his career. Ultimately, achievement didn't suffice as the antidote in finding self-love and self-trust. Throughout Derek's 20s, he's unpacked and explored the belief systems of his life through the lens of a gay kid growing up in a rural America. Today, Derek continues that lifelong journey of supporting others by digging deep to live a life full of joy and abundance, be that in their career, leadership journey, or overall life. In this episode, we cover: How self love is a constant journey that we have to strive for every day How better the workplace would be if we felt comfortable and safe to show up as our whole and true selves If we're pushing parts of ourselves down, it's going to affect all parts of our lives and how we show up To be more accepting of others, we first have to get curious of our own thoughts, beliefs, and judgements The idea that what if that thing you were so worried about yourself, is true, but actually wasn't a problem Resources & Links: Connect with Derek on Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn Email Derek: derek@derekmulhern.com The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown [affiliate link] Start a Squarespace site today! I wanted to keep this week's episode short and sweet, because I'd love for you to spend more time with yourself and the people that you love than with me. Let's pretend this episode is twice as long, but the second half you just hang out with yourself in reflection, how does that sound? This, of course, is the season of gratitude. If you're listening to this the day it's released, tomorrow is Thanksgiving. But before we get there, I just want to hold space for you to slow down and take a few deep breaths to tap into how you're feeling today and in this season. Whatever comes up for you, allow it without resistance. Feel what needs to be felt. In this episode, we'll chat about: Is gratitude overdone this time of year? Focusing on gratitude while also not ignoring any hard feelings that come up The power of observing your feelings, naming them, and feeling whatever needs to be felt Rooting ourselves in gratitude and abundance Resources & Links: Start a Squarespace site today!
