In the 1990s, Detroit had a profound impact on Moudou Baqui and his entire family. They had moved from Tennessee to escape racism and limited opportunities, eventually establishing roots in Detroit. The Petty family began to settle in Detroit when the land beyond 8 Mile Road was still farmland, owned and cultivated by them. This included the area where the Kroger at 8 Mile and Wyoming now stands, which was seized through eminent domain, resulting in the loss of 200 acres of farmland. Moudou's family history is a testament to Black independence and resilience in the face of the systemic challenges imposed by America. Moudou, born Jason Petty, has a story that intertwines civil rights, street life, Black liberation, African-centered education, and healing, reminiscent of a modern-day Forrest Gump. In this interview, he shares his insights on healing, movement, and much more. Tune in to "Detroit is Different" with Moudou Baqui to learn more about his remarkable journey. Jason Petty (known as Propaganda) joins Joey and his friend Robbie Madison who are fresh off of reading Prop's new book, "Terraforming.” With this book as the backdrop, the three discuss why people do evil and ponder if humans can actually be evil. Prop describes how culture is made and how we, the Earthlings, can turn the tide and go in a better direction. He maintains an intriguing vibe of optimism (that Joey is jealous of) with his belief in the possibility of making a better world. The three also discuss how the "Gen Z kids" are bringing in a new wave of love and acceptance, and they reflect on September 11th 2001. In this week's interview we get to listen in on a conversation with Michael Metcalf and Jason Petty. Jason, better known by his stage name Propaganda, is an American Christian hip hop and spoken word artist and poet from Los Angeles, California. He has released seven albums as an independent artist, including one collaborative album with Odd Thomas and one with Derek Minor, and has performed and recorded as a member of the underground hip hop group Tunnel Rats and associated act Footsoldiers. In his very early childhood, his family moved into a violent, ethnically Mexican neighborhood. As the only black child in the area, he was often teased due to his skin color. Later, his family moved again, this time to the suburbs, where his family was known as the "poor black family." He learned to rap, and also took up dance, graffiti, and formal drawing and painting. You can learn more about Jason and his artistry here: https://www.prophiphop.com/
This will be the book you can't put down. Jason Petty brings us from his early years racing at Cartaret Speedway through Orange County, the WKA Speedway Pavement Series, and he Briggs & Stratton 300. His stories are amazing and his passion for the sport of karting becomes very clear. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

This 4th episode in our For the Love of Podcasts series speaks to the powerful way podcasts can affect change. In fact, we’ve seen podcasts start important conversations and transport us to moments in history we’d have never encountered otherwise. Jen talks to a few of her podcaster friends who are bringing the heat to their spaces: The Red Couch Podcast’s Jason Petty (aka rapper Propaganda) and his wife, Dr. Alma Zaragoza-Petty, and Catlick’s BT Harman (Brett Trapp!). First, Prop and Alma give us a deep dive into the world of the Red Couch, where they empower the experiences of people in non-majority culture who may not have conventional degrees, but can school us on politics and economics all the same (because everybody comes up against money and power, no matter where they live). Prop and Alma invite folks in majority culture to spend time in a space that’s not designed for them—because experience breeds empathy. In the second half of the show, we catch up with BT Harman, who was on the show last spring when we still called him Brett Trapp. Today we learn about the podcast BT’s been working on for four years: a true-crime story filled with complicated Southern history reaching back across centuries that he unearthed right in his own backyard: Atlanta’s Cabbagetown neighborhood. These storytellers encourage every generation to retell the hard stories, and to make room for voices from the margins to move to the center of the discussion.
It’s been said that artists are the prophets of the church. Propaganda is the embodiment of that truth. Preston sits down with Prop for the first time to discuss his journey in evangelicalism. Son of a Black Panther father, raised in a Latinx and then white neighborhood, journeying in and (sort of) out of reformed evangelicalism, and now outspoken toward the supremacy of Jesus in all things and the social-political implications of the gospel, Prop is a voice that needs to be reckoned with. Prop and Preston talk about racism, tribalism, hip-hop, the gospel and culture, white evangelicalism, and humility—among many other things.Support PrestonSupport Preston by going to patreon.comConnect with PrestonTwitter | @PrestonSprinkleInstagram | @preston.sprinkleCheck out his website prestonsprinkle.comIf you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave a review.
As the 2020 presidential campaign in America heats up, evangelical Christians will be getting more and more attention in the US news media. They always do during election season as they have long been seen as reliable Republican voters. But people who identify as evangelical or born-again Christians are more than just a voting bloc. Evangelicals make up a huge swath of the US population and they are rapidly becoming more diverse than ever before. Join us as Bryan & Rebecca Papé, MiiR Co-Founders, join Jason Petty — also known as Propaganda, also known as Prop — in a conversation about music, touring, family, grief and, of course, coffee. We cannot wait for you to tune into this conversation, and please enjoy!
Poet and Hip Hop artist, Jason Petty, better known as “Propaganda,” shares his spiritual biography, journey to Hip Hop and few behind the scenes insights to some of his music. Propaganda is an American Christian hip hop and spoken word artist and poet from Los Angeles, California. He has released four albums as an independent artist and co-hosts the Red Couch Podcast with his wife, Dr. Alma.
The Tailgate Show S8 E4 - JASON PETTY
Reframing the Lens with Propaganda Sometimes, we get so stuck in our way of thinking because of what’s been force-fed to us. Often we must unlearn what we’ve been taught and reteach ourselves to see things from different perspectives. Perspective is key. When you reframe the lens you look through, you can better deal with issues in both your creative and daily life. Simply visualizing yourself in someone else’s shoes can radically change the way you think, speak, and act on a certain subject. When you are able to see a bigger picture at stake, you begin to find ways you can contribute to a greater cause. That’s what this show is about. I’m no one special, but I feel I have a special privilege and duty to invest a large chunk of my existence into pouring something “good” into this world. I feel called to be a player on a star-studded team that’s going to accomplish something phenomenal in the grand scheme of things. You could be a pivotal role player, too. Fail and See What Sticks Queue today’s guest: Jason Petty, a Hip Hop and Spoken Word juggernaut who slays under the alias Propaganda. While I see myself as the role player, like a Derek Fisher or Robert Horry of 2001-2002 Lakers, PropHipHop is a superstar—say like Shaq or my all-time favorite player, Kobe Bryant, in this greater picture. Before I heard his music, I was captivated by his Keynote talk at the AIGA Thrive Conference in Raleigh, NC, back in late February. The way he commanded the stage, plus the ideas and critical thinking he showered our brains with, left me speechless and inspired. I knew I had to have him on the show to share his perspective with you. Once I started listening to his music, it only elevated my respect for him as he’s a master at crafting a visual picture with his words. He’s a down-to-earth dude who can inspire you to get into the boxing ring with the gloves laced up and to start putting more intention behind your work and actions. Today, Prop and I peel back layers and go deep into topics of: Reframing the lense in which you see the world Throwing spaghetti at a wall to see what sticks Benefiting from failure as an artist Curating cultures and experiences as artists Of course his favorite pizza and so much more There's a lot of hype built around this episode and I promise it won't disappoint.
