Anora was the big winner at today's Oscars - triumphing despite a low budget. The film won five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actress. Creator Sean Baker won for director, editing and original screenplay, tying with Walt Disney for the record of four wins in one night. LA-based entertainment reporter Sean Mandell says it's a true independent film. "It was made for $6 million - which sounds like a lot of money, but to make a movie, it's not a lot of money at all." This week, we chat with Chef Daniel Holzman, who owns Danny Boy's Famous Original, a two-location operation in Los Angeles, California. We spoke with Daniel a few days before the catastrophic wildfires broke out in LA. So, our conversation with Daniel focused on his career, the growth of Danny Boy's and what he has learned in the restaurant business. Danny Boy's locations are currently safe. We would like to recognize Danny Boy's, who has quickly provided sanctuary for those affected. Both pizzerias are feeding the community, firefighters and first responders. More background on Daniel: Daniel started his cooking career at the age of 15 at Le Bernardin in New York City and remained there for four years until (at the suggestion of chef Eric Ripert) he attended the CIA. He then accepted a position at the soon-to-open Palladin in New York City under chef Jean-Louis Palladin (and worked alongside Wylie Dufresne and Sam Mason, among others). He went on to begin what would ultimately become a 10-year culinary journey through some of the West Coast's finest restaurants, including The Campton Place, The Fifth Floor, Aqua and Jardinière.In 2010, he co-founded The Meatball Shop in New York City. The fast-casual mix-and-match menu of meatballs was an instant hit. Five more locations of The Meatball Shop opened in NYC in quick succession, and he also co-authored The Meatball Shop Cookbook, published in 2011.He moved to LA in 2019 to embark on a new passion -- pizza -- and opened Danny Boy's Famous Original, the slice joint of his childhood dreams, in 2021. Describing the years-long his years-long odyssey to perfect the New York-style slice: "As a classically trained chef, I approach pizza with reverence. Pizza isn't fast food; it's one of America's most important dishes. And to understand how to make it great, I deconstructed everything about it. I searched out masters across the country, learned the history, and sampled thousands of pies. I interrogated oven makers, traveled to tomato farms, tried grains from countless flour mills, and experimented with the perfect cheese blend."Since opening, he's received praise from LA Magazine for his "ultrawide, perfectly foldable, tangy-crusted slices [that] nail it"; LAist for being a "NY-style pizzeria that absolutely rips"; and Eater LA, which claimed "There may be no better New York-style slice spot in LA than Danny Boy's right now.” He just opened his second location of Danny Boy's this past summer, and has his sights set on a third. He's also the co-author (with Matt Rodbard) of Food IQ: 100 Questions, Answers, and Recipes to Raise Your Cooking Smarts, released in 2022. (Some of the questions they answer include: "Why does pasta always taste better in a restaurant?", "When is it okay to cook with frozen vegetables?", and "What is baker's math, and why is it the secret to perfect pastry every time?")Last but not least, he also co-hosts On the Line, a podcast during which he and co-host Chef Amanda Freitag interview culinary innovators.More on the LA WildfiresAmong the horrible devastation from the wildfires in Los Angeles, we know there were pizzerias have been lost. Our new Senior Editor Kate Lavin is reporting on the LA Wildfires and the Pizza Community, including local pizzerias directly assisting the efforts on the ground, as well as Slice Out Hunger, who is rallying pizzerias in a fundraising effort to provide emergency funds. Tens of thousands of University of California workers have authorized their unions to call a strike in coming weeks. They say many departments are understaffed and accuse UC administrators of bargaining in bad faith. Although California's more than 180,000 unhoused residents could be impacted by the results of next week's election, many may not vote due to various challenges. Data from Sacramento County shows less than 10 percent of unhoused voters there are registered. Reporter: Yue Stella Yu, CalMatters Statewide Proposition 34 is, on its face, about requiring health care providers to spend nearly all of their revenue on patients. But the measure is backed by a landlord lobbying group and only applies to a single provider who is pushing for more rent control in California. Join me and my friend Liron, a fitness coach from Los Angeles, as we discuss the complex relationship between fitness trends, body image, and attracting potential partners. We share personal stories and insights into how men and women design their workout routines in hopes of gaining attention from the opposite sex. We reveal how looks and health intersect in the social environment of the gym. We also talk about the concept of "parallel play" at the gym, which is a unique way for people to work out individually while still experiencing a sense of community. This shows the multi-faceted nature of modern workout culture. We also explore cultural beauty standards and how they influence relationships. We look at how subjective attraction can lead people to pursue a "trophy" partner, and the potential judgments that can arise from relationships with large age gaps. We discuss dating preferences, examining how much weight men and women place on physical attributes versus qualities like security and confidence, which could be the ultimate universal attraction. Don't miss this episode as we give our thoughts on how dating apps have revolutionized the search for companionship, but may also complicate the path to lasting connections. Elon Musk's Twitter takeover has continued in a spectacularly chaotic fashion. Twitter announced on Saturday the deal had been closed on Friday - and one of Musk's first acts was to boot three top leadership figures at the company. Each received a payout of tens of millions. It's just the beginning of the Musk regime - he has reportedly said he will cut 75 percent of jobs at Twitter, a claim Musk denies. He also styles himself as a "free speech absolutist," but also tweeted on Friday that Twitter will form a "content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints," and that no major decisions on moderation or account reinstatements will be made before it convenes. LA Based investment bank Wedbush senior equity analyst Daniel Ives spoke to Mani Dunlop.

This week we cozy up in the bath with Austyn Weiner, who we finally had the pleasure of hosting at her first Secular Sabbath earlier this summer. Austyn found herself fully immersed in our sensory soundscape on Shabbat. Now, she's back for a more intimate conversation where we get to know her: a deep-thinking, witty-humored, large-scale oil painter. We dive into her thoughts on art, philosophy, and self-exploration. We discover what elements of connection have an impact in her life. From refining her creative practices to reshaping her outlook on the intricacies of familial relationships, this moment in time is full of change as Austyn realizes she's entering a significant new phase in her life. Austyn discovered her passion for creating when a middle school teacher saw her need to channel emotion into physical form by giving her clay and receiving it back in the form of a deranged object - her heightened emotions mysteriously settled once that the energy was transferred into an object form. From that point on, Austyn found that creating art was nearly a form of therapy. It was an outlet for intense self-expression, which manifested itself in how she creates today. Austyn has discovered her need to create is perpetual, as she thinks about painting, the elements of paint, and the way oil works all while trying to relax on a vacation. Art has become larger than life to her, both physically and metaphorically. Her paintings themselves have grown to be large-scale works of art in a larger-than-life studio. This large format method brings her back to a humble state of dwarfing herself in comparison to the canvas; her works become autobiographical in this way. Austyn aims to eliminate the stigma of good or bad art, instead asking the viewer to reimagine finished artworks as expressions of emotion that reflect the artist's tangible experience.Growing up in a Jewish family allowed for a heightened sense of intimacy for Austyn, with instated practices to best spend time together. Austyn's Jewish upbringing tied not only her immediate family together, but linked them with a worldwide cultural community. With the pros and cons of any religion, she chooses to focus on the softness that comes from generations before her. She finds beauty in Judaism and is in awe of all of the many ways in which one can be Jewish, loving the ways in which rituals develop idiosyncratically from one family to the next, one denomination to another, and even country to country. Relishing in the beauty of difference and a curiosity for the dynamics of people, this throughline is also prevalent in her work. It is also what initially drew her to Secular Sabbath and our thread of connection we share in our upbringing within the culture of Judaism. Seeing the building blocks of community and creative freedom happening in front of her eyes at our Summer Soiree, she felt an immediate understanding of our desire to awaken the sensory self in everyone just as she's been exploring her own journey of rediscovery. She finds the Secular Sabbath approach lovable with inclusive day-of-rest practice, outside of religious, spiritual, or agnostic belief systems.Full of wisdom, energy, and expanding ideas, Austyn shares with us a world from which she's come, and leads us to where she's going. So please enjoy this tiny window into a big soulful inner landscape that exists within Austyn Weiner. To join Secular Sabbath membership, you can find us at secular-sabbath.com/membership. Joining grants you access to our Inner Circle community of sensory-exploring like-minded people, where you can gather with us locally in LA for monthly meet-up experiences, and pop-up events around the globe, and partake in our exclusive ambient online community. Ready to dive into the dialogue deeper? Join us on our Discord channel.See what we get up to at @secularsabbath.

“Public speaking has always made me very very nervous, on a neurological level. So there's a part of me that feels safe when I'm writing because I can spend a really long time working through one sentence. And also I can make sure that it's padded by all of the caveats…” - Jason Rogers Ever Forward Club's Ashanti Branch is joined by Jason Rogers. Jason is an Olympic medalist in fencing and a regular contributor to Men's Health magazine. As an Olympic medalist, he spent most of his life conforming to unhealthy expectations of manhood. Now, he spends his time undoing these expectations by writing about the evolving state of masculinity. Jason and Ashanti share their masks, analyze the phenomenon of “public vulnerability”, and create space for a writer and a speaker to share where they lack confidence. Enjoy the show! (2:00) Ashanti's introduction. (8:40) Jason introduces himself and his work. Then, he and Ashanti look back on how they first connected. (11:45) Ashanti shares the front of his mask - serious, funny, caring - and he examines the cracks in his mask that come from his childhood. (19:30) Jason shares the front of his mask - nice!, confident, easygoing - and how he found himself performing for the approval of others throughout his life. (24:00) Ashanti shares the back of his mask - doubt, overwhelmed, fear - and opens up with some of the struggles of his work. (29:00) Jason and Ashanti take a step back and ask the question, “why do we share publicly?” “Why are we publicly vulnerable?” (32:40) Jason shares the back of his mask - selfish, judgmental, stressed - and how these elements of himself are habits within him that he is reconciling. (35:30) Jason and Ashanti come back to the idea of public vulnerability. (40:45) Ashanti examines how, as a public speaker, he struggles with writing. Then, Jason examines how, as a writer, he struggles with public speaking.
