In this episode, I'm joined by author AJ O. Mason and illustrator Dominic Bustamante to talk about new sci-fi YA queer graphic novel, “Kloud 9: The Star Soldier,” which drops on July 7 through IDW. Kloud 9 follows Kal, an Earthling without much purpose in life. Cosmot'urr Col Al'neyr, Cosmo for short, is an alien struggling to find his place in the galaxy. Sparks fly when the two meet—but when Cosmo's past catches up with him, Kal is forced to make a choice: remain on Earth or follow his crush into the great unknown. Now they just have to navigate the dangers of outer space, a megalomaniac pseudoparent, and their growing feelings for each other. AJ and Dominic share how they began collaborating on this project, and how the process went for two people who never worked together before. We dive into the Dominic's art style and the new world of sci-fi that he got to draw. AJ talks about how he grew as a writer and the lessons learned. We also talk a little business, such as how to launch an idea from the initial concept and ways to find a publishing company. You can learn more about this talented duo at https://ajomason.com and https://linktr.ee/Dommnics.

Brain aging and disease research can gain new insights from space. Aline M.A. Martins, Ph.D., UC San Diego, explains how neuroscience studies in space use brain organoids, proteomics, and single-cell analysis to understand cognition decline, space-induced neurosenescence, and disease-related changes. Martins examines molecular markers of senescence, mitochondrial impairment, and neuroinflammation in organoid models, including Rett syndrome, while also comparing how space affects organoids of different ages. She shows that space can accelerate aging-related changes and affect cell types differently, helping clarify how space biology may speed drug discovery and reveal biomarkers for disease. This work helps explain how space research can inform treatments on Earth and points toward faster preclinical testing and broader understanding of brain disease. For earthday 2026, I'm replaying an interview of me describing the Human Animal Earthling identity as a strategy to creating alliances for social change by cultivating a more inclusive ingroup and broader moral sphere of concern -- a planetary team spirit, where humans embrace their animality and protect other sentient beings and our habitats. Co-host Melody Paris interviewed me (Carrie Freeman) back in December 2020 (we were all distracted by the U.S. Presidential election back then, remember?) about my new book with UGA Press "The Human Animal Earthling Identity: Shared Values Unifying Human Rights, Animal Rights, and Environmental Movements" https://www.humananimalearthlings.com/ (which subsequently went on to win several environmental book awards in independent book publishing categories, such as "Book Most Likely to Save the Planet"....although, in order to 'save the planet' people need to read it or listen in to apply its findings from me studying 18 social movement organizations and interviewing their leaders). In this 50-minute podcast, we discuss why identity is core to social change, how to resolve tensions between human and nonhuman causes, shared values all progressive causes endorse, common opponents, root causes of problems to address, and shared projects all advocacy groups could work on in a way that would help all living beings (not just one subset). "In Tune to Nature" is an hour-long radio show airing Wednesdays at 6pm Eastern Time on 89.3FM-Atlanta radio and streaming worldwide on wrfg.org (Radio Free Georgia, a nonprofit indie station) hosted by me, Carrie Freeman, or friend Melody Paris. The show's website and my contact info can be found at https://wrfg.org/intunetonature/ While there, consider donating to Radio Free Georgia, a 50+ year old progressive, non-commercial, indie radio station, run largely by volunteers like me and Melody. As Human Animal Earthlings, we take care of ourselves and others, including other species. Well now, here's one of the biggest albums we've had to look at to date - an absolute monster that came out in October 1995 and just changed everything it seemed. Oasis mania took over the UK and a lot of the rest of the world as well. And if you're assuming that we might give this one a kicking then prepare to be disappointed! We do also talk about things like Mr Bungle, Earthling and obviously PJ & Duncan. As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating or comment over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist (which contains ALL of the songs we talk about on this one) and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. And if you want to donate to our PayPal account for the price of a pint or a cup of coffee that is always appreciated as well obviously. Cheers!
In 1997, David Bowie released Earthling, an album deeply influenced by the sound of drum and bass and industrial electronic music. Spending time in Dublin city, Bowie befriended the Quadraphonic collective, who brought the drum and bass sound to the city at venues like The Globe and The Kitchen. This led to a secret concert at The Factory venue in Ringsend. My guest Ray O'Donoghue is now the Night Time Economy Advisor to Dublin City Council, but was then part of Quadraphonic and opened for Bowie on the night.Contributions also come from John Brereton, Director of the DublinBowie Festival. This week on The Data Minute, Peter sits down with Arian Ghashghai, Founding Partner at Earthling VC, to discuss his thesis of investing in "weird stuff early."Arian explains why he bets on robotic oyster farms, virtual reality, and ocean exploration when other investors are chasing the latest consensus trends. He breaks down his "pirate ship" approach to venture capital and why being the first check is often more valuable to a founder than being the "most helpful."They also discuss the current state of the VC market and why Arian believes many funds have shifted from true long-term investing to short-term trading. Plus, Arian shares his unfiltered advice on raising from LPs, why he ignores "signaling risk" from big funds, and why Zurich might have a higher talent density than San Francisco.Subscribe to Carta's weekly Data Minute newsletter: https://carta.com/subscribe/data-newsletter-sign-up/Explore interactive startup and VC data, with Carta's Data Desk: https://carta.com/data-desk/Chapters:00:00 – Intro: Investing in weird stuff02:07 – Intro to Earthling VC02:47 – The "weird stuff early" thesis03:57 – Who are the LPs backing weird tech?05:47 – Why VR is a polarizing investment08:55 – The value of transparency with LPs10:49 – Case study: Robotic oyster farms14:36 – Do LPs push back on style drift?16:06 – Why keep the fund size small?18:50 – Portfolio construction: Diversified vs. Concentrated19:56 – Fundraising advice: Find alignment, don't convince25:46 – Can a solo GP really support 50 companies?28:42 – The three types of investors: Biggest, First, Helpful30:50 – Speed as a competitive advantage33:03 – Why Safe caps are just demand-driven prices34:11 – The cynicism of modern venture capital38:02 – Are VCs investing or just trading?41:31 – Do we need more VCs?46:41 – Avoiding consensus deal flow48:17 – Why Zurich is an underrated tech hub50:50 – Why founders love explicit investorsThis presentation contains general information only and eShares, Inc. dba Carta, Inc. Mars and Martians. They go together in the public's mind. The Earthling fascination with "alien invaders" goes back a long time. But why? And what does it say about all of us here on Earth? Dean explores this cultural phenomenon with David Baron, author of "The Martians."

The Transition from Law to PrayerThe law of God is an invitation to examine the heart, and prayer is the heart turning to God. We need to see that prayer is our heart's alignment with God, not simply outward behaviors, and the continuity of biblical teaching from law to intimate, honest prayer. The story of Abraham's intercession for Sodom becomes a model, highlighting both compassionate concern for one's neighbor and hopeful expectation when coming before the Lord.Heavenly Membership and Divine InvitationThe beauty of our identity in the kingdom is that through redemption, believers share in a heavenly membership like Abraham, who was chosen and invited into God's intimate counsel. Prayer is not rendered pointless by God's sovereignty; rather, God's ordaining of all things includes the sincere, heartfelt prayers of his people. The catechism's high view of prayer resists the caricature of Calvinism as passive, affirming that prayers are both real and ordained, and expressing that believers are privileged recipients of grace, chosen, heard, and loved by God. We are members of God's family and part of the heavenly community. The Humble Approach and AssuranceThe catechism and Abraham's example stress that prayer must be humble and heartfelt, not mechanical or entitled. The narrative underlines that approaching God—recognizing one's unworthiness and God's mercy—is central to true prayer. Abraham's repeated, respectful pleas for Sodom illustrate persistence, humility, and a deep trust that God's character is both just and merciful. The overall assurance to believers is that God hears and answers prayers in accordance with his good and sovereign will, and his timing, which can require patience and persistent faith.Real Alignment and the Purpose of PrayerTrue prayer, as the preacher concludes, realigns the believer's heart and purposes with the will of God, encompassing both spiritual and physical needs. Scriptural examples—Abraham's intercession, Isaiah's vision, and the psalms—highlight that humanity's ultimate desire is communion with God and living in accordance with his plan. The catechism urges prayers that reflect gratitude, humility, patience, and a willingness to be shaped by God's wisdom. Ultimately, prayer is a gift through which God provides, sanctifies, and draws believers into a deeper relationship with Himself.

It's our second time reviewing a Take That album, this time it's 'Nobody Else' from 1995 which was the one they released just before Robbie Williams left the band and then they decided to split up thus ruining the lives of every teen girl in the UK. It's also the one that has Back For Good on it but having not heard anything other than the singles we weren't sure what the rest of the songs on here were going to be like. As it turns out, lots of New Jack Swing. But we also chat about Clutch, Earthling and Scatman John so happy days. Cheers!
In today's episode I'm joined by my dear friend Susi Barreto. We first met during our Stråla Yoga training in Amsterdam back in 2017 and immediately connected over our shared love of movement, mindfulness and our latino roots. This conversation is a little different from my usual Human Design episodes. It's a heart-to-heart about sustainability, teaching, reconnecting to nature and the simple rituals that keep us grounded.Susi shares her journey from biologist to Stråla guide to children's book author. We talk about her first book A Good Earthling, a project born from her deep love for nature and her hope to help the next generation stay connected to it in a world that's becoming more digital every day. It's a reminder that small actions like biking to work, cooking from scratch, spending a few barefoot minutes outside can create real change. In this episode we talked about:Susi's childhood close to nature and how it shaped her passion for biology and teachingHer injury and the path that led her to Stråla YogaWhat inspired her to write A Good EarthlingThe challenges of trying to live sustainably when the world around us makes it hardFacing climate anxiety and choosing softness and love instead of fearHow everyday rituals like cooking, biking and being outdoors can keep us grounded and strongI hope this conversation leaves you feeling inspired to slow down, connect with nature and nourish the parts of you that long for a deeper connection with yourself and the world around you.FOLLOW SUSIwww.instagram.com/susibarreto_bio.site/SusiBarretoGet The Good Earthling here
Send us a textHappy Earth Day! There are two concepts that every person should understand to be a better Earthling: entropy and self-organization. It seems like a paradox, but systems on Earth are simultaneously breaking down into disorder and arranging themselves into complex superorganisms. Everything on Earth (well, really in the whole universe) is subject to the second law of thermodynamics, which means it all dies and decays. But with access to steady flows of energy, organisms, ecosystems, and human societies can hold back the death and decay for a spell. After dropping the kids off at the pool, Asher, Rob, and Jason cover the interplay of entropy and self-organization and contemplate how to manage the inevitability of entropy with elegance (beyond morphing into a lizard person).Originally recorded on 4/8/25.Warning: This podcast occasionally uses spicy language.Sources/Links/Notes:Geoffrey West, Scale: The Universal Laws of Growth, Innovation, Sustainability, and the Pace of Life in Organisms, Cities, Economies, and Companies, Penguin Books, 2018.Robin Wall Kimmerer, The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World, Scribner, 2024.William Rees, “End game: the economy as eco-catastrophe and what needs to change,” Real-World Economics Review, 2019.The laws of thermodynamics, as explained by the website “Physics for Idiots""Telegraph Road" - song by Dire StraitsDavid Owen, "Green Manhattan," The New Yorker, October 10, 2004.Other Crazy Town episodes you might like:Crazy Town 100 - A Temporary Techno Stunt: Tom Murphy on Falling out or Love with ModernityCrazy Town 35 - Self Domestication and Overshoot, or… the Story of Foxes and Russian MelodramaCrazy Town Bonus Riff - Vanilla Andreessen, Pygmy Marmosets, and Hi-Tech DelusionsSupport the show

When David Bowie wanted to update his sound in the 90s to the drum-n-bass that was popular on the streets, he picked producer/musician Mark Plati to get him there. Mark had come up under the mentorship of the great Arthur Baker and was venturing out on his own. He thinks it was producing Babylon Zoo's "Spaceman" that sealed the deal with Bowie. Mark stuck around for a decade producing albums like Earthling, Hours, and Reality. In addition there's work with the Cure, Duncan Sheik, Prince and many others. Mark's still at it producing and performing. Enjoy! www.mark-plati.com www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod
