Today, April 15, takes us back to 1912, when the ‘unsinkable' Titanic met its match and sank with only 705 souls surviving. Join Kate and Sheila as they recap Jennifer A. Nielsen's gripping tale, Iceberg, told from the viewpoint of 12 year old Hazel who is forced to become a stowaway because she doesn't have enough money to buy a ticket. One word describing Hazel would be curious. A wise passenger, Mrs. Abelman celebrates curiosity even though Hazel thinks it is miserable to have so many questions. “It's questions that keep us alive, Hazel, questions that keep us moving forward…It's only miserable if you see it as a problem. I think curiosity is a gift…”Another great character is Charlie, the porter who gives Hazel wise advice when she's worried about having dinner with her friend in first class and feeling out of place. “People are the same everywhere. Either they'll accept you as you are or they won't, but if they don't, that says more about them as snobs than you as coming from poverty.”Curiosity and courage summarize Iceberg, but intrigue and mystery along with a couple of surprises add to the mix for a remarkable read! Hop aboard the Titanic with Hazel and company where the difference in the classes is felt not seen, learn about the fire aboard the ship when it set off and discover just as the iceberg aka frozen monster cannot be clearly seen from the surface neither can the fearlessness of people be seen on the outside, time and trouble expose the truth. Here is your ticket to board! Thank you dear listener, you are a blessing!
Lidia Zakrzewski's real-life story of the Polish resistance fighters who struggled to force out the Nazi occupiers inspired Jennifer A. Nielsen to write, Uprising, an amazing novel about Poland falling into the hands of Germany. Lidia's father went off to fight and she desperately wanted to go with him. The huge conflict of the occupation and the conflict on the homefront between Lidia and her mother keep readers on the edge of their seats. Why does her mother criticize so quickly? Why does Lidia refuse to see any good in her mother? Lidia's brother, Ryszard, tries to help her. “That's your problem, Lidia. You think you already know everything and can do everything and understand everything, but you don't.” Lidia becomes a messenger for the Resistance and is led through the sewers by a girl named Ester. “I wasn't worried. There was a calmness about Ester, and a confidence that kept me calm too…to have met Ester was entirely worth it.” What a goal for all of us to exude calmness and confidence in a confusing world because we are anchored to God! Uprising takes readers through the Invasion, the Occupation, the Uprising, and lastly, the Escape. Are you ready to join Poland's 55,000 resistance fighters as they strive daily to outwit the Nazis? Please join Kate and Sheila as they recap a turbulent time in history when chaos surrounded the Polish people but they were still able to say, “...whenever we are with those we love, we are home.” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/recapbookchat/message

Today, on Hook of a Book, I review Words on Fire, by Jennifer A. Nielsen. This historical fiction book is absolutely incredible, and I am so excited to share it with you! Email me: hookofabookpodcast@gmail.com. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/Ellie-Mano/message
Happy 2023! We ended 2022 reading this book and started 2023 by recapping it! Words on Fire is a historical fiction novel written by Jennifer. A. Nielsen. The story takes place in the 1800's during Russia's occupation of Lithuania. In order to help Lithuania assimilate, Russia has insisted every Lithuanian become Russian. They have banned their language, religion, culture and their books. The story follows Audra, a 12 year old girl whose parents were arrested for distributing illegal Lithuanian books. Audra soon discovers the world of book smuggling and the power of literature. We took as detour and also talked about happy goals vs punishing goals. Happy goals are flexible and are constantly motivating where punishing goals are rigid and demotivating if not met perfectly. Be sure your 2023 goals are happy ones. This may be the most important episode of Middle Grade Book Party we'll ever release. If you are an advocate of children's literacy, or care passionately about getting great books into the hands of children everywhere, this is the episode for you! After hearing us talk with authors Jennifer A. Nielsen, and Jennifer Jenkins about their new children's literacy initiative, the importance of reading, and hanging on a fence by a wedgie, you'll come away inspired, excited, and hopefully, ready to get involved. At least we sure did!A glimpse at the initiative from Jennifer A. Nielsen:"A few years ago, I had the privilege of hearing a speech given by Dick Robinson, the President of Scholastic Books, in which he said, “As long as children do not have equal access to books, we will never live in a truly equal society.”He was right. In middle class neighborhoods, there are an average of 13 books for each young reader. However, in high poverty areas, the ratio is approximately 1 age appropriate book for every 300 children."This moment inspired Jennifer A. Nielsen to found the Book Drop Campaign. In partnership with Teen Author Boot Camp [TABC], an amazing not-for-profit organization specifically geared for teen and tween authors, Book Drop is seeking funding from corporate sponsors to be able to purchase a book for every child in as many Title 1 Schools as possible. But they are offering more than a book. Since author visits generate higher interest in reading books, and communicate with time and attention how much each child individually matters, the authors of the books will donate their time to offer free school visits to students as well. Corporate sponsors may also participate directly in the school events if they wish. This Episode's Guests: Jennifer A. Biggest Takeaways Building trust is something our teens – and we – do with every choice we make. You’re either building trust or breaking it, there’s no in between. How is your teen building trust when it comes to being responsible? Being honest? Having integrity and character? Your actions, decisions, and expectations communicate your trustworthiness to your teens every day. How are you building trust when it comes to following through? Listening before jumping to conclusions? Telling the truth even when it’s hard? Supporting them through a crisis? Sticking to your decision, once you’ve made one? You break trust with your teen when you don’t give them clear answers. When you flip flop on your decisions. When you don’t lay out clear expectations. When you share things about them without their permission – especially on social media. Not apologizing when you are wrong. Something that seems like a pebble to you can feel like a boulder to them. Questions to Ask Use these questions to do a gut check about how you’re building trust. Ask yourself: Do I consistently give my teen clear & decisive answers? Is my yes, “yes” and my no, “no?” Are my expectations clear? Do I honor their privacy? Do I apologize quickly and sincerely to reconcile our relationship? Have your teen ask themselves: Do I follow through on my responsibilities? Am I being honest with the adults in my life? Do I volunteer information before I’m “caught”? Do my actions demonstrate integrity and character? Referenced in this Episode The Ish Girl on Facebook The Ish Girl on Instagram For exclusive content, Sign Up for The Ish Girl’s Weekly Email! Gospel Scripture: (all NIV) Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” Romans 3:24 “and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Romans 3:25 (a) “God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood.” Hebrews 9:22 (b) “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:11 “Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.” John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Romans 10:9 “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Luke 15:10 says “In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Romans 8:1 “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” Ephesians 1:13–14 “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession- to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:15–23 “For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“ Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“ Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
