Erving Goffman has always seen as somewhat of an enigma by sociologists and historians of the discipline. In his provocative new book Erving Goffman and the Cold War (2023, Lexington) Gary Jaworski suggests a ‘marginal man' trope has grown up around him, whereby Goffman is seen as an outsider, unconnected to broader debates in sociology and to the events happening around him as he wrote. Seeking to overcome this trope, Jaworski presents him instead as a sociologist ‘in, and of' the cold war. This involves looking anew at Goffman's work, moving away from the more frequently used concepts and looking at less studied metaphors in his work such as loyalty, provocation and secrecy. Here we see how Goffman was a perceptive sociologist of cold war America and, in so doing, can explore his connections to cold warriors, on both sides of the divide. In our conversation we explore the ways in which looking at Goffman's work via the cold war allows us to understand some of the underappreciated greatness of his work. Topics discussed include why lesser known texts such as Strategic Interaction and Where the Action Is are so important, the role that spies play in his work and why Goffman was such a fan of post-WWII satire. Gary D. McGugan has always enjoyed reading and storytelling, but for more than forty years, he was deeply embedded in the corporate world. Anyone who has operated at a senior level within a large company knows there's little time for serious writing, and it took retirement from that world to pursue a new passion. His first book was a work of non-fiction, co-authored with his friend Jeff Allen. That positive experience demonstrated that while writing a book is undeniably challenging, it's not insurmountable. McGugan's life experiences now form the foundation for entertaining suspense thrillers, set against the backdrop of a large, multinational corporation and woven with intrigue. Since his debut novel in 2016, Three Weeks Less a Day, he has released a new book each year, with his eighth, When Power Fails, now available. His corporate career offered a wealth of insight into a wide range of industries and situations. He worked in supermarkets, sold appliances, distributed motorcycles, launched an automobile dealer network, and provided financing and consulting to help businesses grow. Chinatown (1974) is a neo-noir crime thriller, directed by Roman Polanski from a screenplay by Robert Towne. Based loosely on the Owens Valley water wars in Los Angeles from the early twentieth century, the film follows private investigator J.J. (“Jake”) Gittes (Jack Nicholson) as he pursues a series of leads that take him into the dark underbelly of power and corruption in 1930s Los Angeles. A woman claiming to be "Evelyn Mulwray” initially hires Gittes to follow her husband Hollis, whom she suspects of infidelity. Gittes discovers that Noah Cross (John Huston), the father of the real Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway), had Hollis, his former business partner and head of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, killed. Hollis had learned of Cross's plan to force famers in the Northwest valley to sell their land by cutting off their irrigating water and purchasing it through dummy syndicates on the cheap with the aim of developing the land into valuable Los Angeles real estate. Gittes also learns that the young woman he falsely suspected Hollis of having an affair with is Evelyn's sister and daughter—the product of Evelyn's rape by Cross when she was fifteen. While Gittes ultimately unravels the mystery, he is unable to stop the powerful Cross from achieving his goals or prevent the tragic fate that awaits Evelyn. In Part 2 of Episode 40, I'm joined by Wisconsin Golf Hall of Famer and Golf Writers Association of America member, Gary D'Amato, along with multiple-time Tour winner Guy Boros, son of World Golf Hall of Famer Julius Boros. Gary, a member of the Golf Writers Association of America for over 40 years, has covered every Masters since 1993 and was inducted into the Wisconsin Golf Hall of Fame in 2017. While Whistling Straits and Erin Hills are well-known, Gary highlights several other hidden gem courses in Wisconsin, a state that often flies under the radar as a golf destination. He also shares stories of playing alongside some of Wisconsin's greatest golfers, including Steve Stricker, Andy North, Jerry Kelly, and Sherri Steinhauer. Additionally, Gary recounts one of his favorite Masters moments—following Jack Nicklaus as he nearly captured his seventh Green Jacket in 1998—and discusses the book he co-wrote with Packers legend Chester Marcol on the history of the Packers-Bears rivalry. Guy Boros grew up traveling on Tour with his father, Julius, a three-time major champion who won the 1952 and 1963 U.S. Opens and the 1968 PGA Championship. Julius held the record as the oldest major champion, winning the 1968 PGA at 48 years old, until Phil Mickelson surpassed him a few years ago at nearly 51. Guy also found significant success on Tour, particularly in Canada, where he won the Canadian Order of Merit in 1991. His first PGA Tour victory came at the 1996 Greater Vancouver Classic, which he won by a stroke over Lee Janzen. In our conversation, Guy reflects on how his game seemed to elevate whenever he crossed the border, the experience of growing up around the great players of the 60s and 70s while traveling with his father, and his victory at the Vancouver Classic. He also shares insights from playing in this year's U.S. Senior Open at Newport Country Club and the Senior Open Championship at Carnoustie.
