POPULARITY
Hey Self-Aware Leaders, I've been diving into Jocko Willink's book "The Dichotomy of Leadership," and it's sparked some serious reflection on the role of humility in leadership. As someone who's committed to personal growth and self-awareness, I believe this is a topic we all need to grapple with. Jocko makes a bold statement: "Humility is the most important quality in a leader." Now, that might seem counterintuitive in a world that often celebrates confidence and charisma. But hear me out. The Ego Trap Ego can be a powerful motivator, but it can also be a dangerous trap. When our egos get inflated, we become resistant to feedback, blind to our own shortcomings, and unable to learn and grow. We start to believe that we have all the answers, which is a recipe for stagnation and failure. Think about it: how many times have you seen talented leaders derail their careers because they couldn't check their egos? It happens all the time. The Power of Humility Humility, on the other hand, opens up a world of possibilities. It allows us to: Listen: To truly hear and understand the perspectives of others, even when they disagree with us. Learn: To continuously seek out new knowledge and skills, recognizing that we always have more to learn. Lead: To build trust and respect with our teams by acknowledging our own limitations and empowering others. The Micromanagement Myth One area where humility plays a crucial role is in managing up. We often blame our bosses for micromanaging, but Jocko argues that the solution lies in leadership, not complaining. When we take extreme ownership of our work and performance, we naturally earn more autonomy and trust from our superiors. Checking Your Ego So, how can we cultivate humility in our own leadership? Here are a few questions to ask yourself: Am I open to feedback, even when it's difficult to hear? Do I actively seek out opportunities to learn and grow? Am I willing to admit my mistakes and take responsibility for my actions? Do I value the contributions of my team members and empower them to succeed? These are tough questions, but they're essential for any leader who wants to reach their full potential. Remember, humility isn't about weakness or passivity. It's about having the courage to confront your own ego and embrace a mindset of continuous improvement. Let's be honest with ourselves, acknowledge our flaws, and commit to becoming more humble leaders. The rewards will be worth it, both for ourselves and for those we lead.

In today's fast-paced and competitive business world, it's more important than ever for leaders to take ownership of their success. But what does that really mean? On this episode of the ABQ Business Podcast with host Jason Rigby, we explore the concept of extreme ownership and how it can transform the way we lead our teams and drive success in our businesses. What is Extreme Ownership? At its core, extreme ownership is about taking complete responsibility for our actions and outcomes. It means owning our mistakes, learning from them, and taking the necessary steps to improve and move forward. Extreme ownership requires a mindset shift, from blaming external factors for our failures to taking personal accountability for our results. How Does Extreme Ownership Benefit Leaders? Extreme ownership has the power to transform the way we lead our teams and drive success in our businesses. When leaders take ownership of their actions and outcomes, they inspire their teams to do the same. This creates a culture of accountability and responsibility, where team members are empowered to take ownership of their work and deliver outstanding results. Leaders who embrace extreme ownership also demonstrate a level of vulnerability and transparency that builds trust with their teams. By owning their mistakes and learning from them, they show that they are human and approachable, which makes it easier for team members to approach them with their own challenges and opportunities. How Can Leaders Practice Extreme Ownership? To practice extreme ownership, leaders must first recognize the areas where they can take ownership and make improvements. This may involve identifying areas of weakness in their leadership style or gaps in their team's performance. Leaders must then take action to address these areas, whether it's through personal development, coaching, or implementing new strategies. Another key component of extreme ownership is communication. Leaders must be clear and transparent with their teams about their expectations and the results they are striving for. They must also communicate openly and honestly about their own challenges and successes, and provide feedback and guidance to their teams along the way. In conclusion, extreme ownership is a powerful mindset shift that can transform the way we lead our teams and drive success in our businesses. By taking complete responsibility for our actions and outcomes, we can create a culture of accountability and responsibility that empowers our teams to deliver outstanding results. WALK TO EMMAUS - Why did Jesus reveal himself in the breaking of bread? Why didn't He immediately reveal himself to the sad dudes. How does Jesus reveal himself today? 4. PASTORS SHOULD READ GREAT FICTION - Art for Art's sake for sure. In the LCMS the seminaries are ejecting new pastors upon unsuspecting congregations. What should they expect from them? What are pastors supposed to be doing! 6. Jocko Willink (@jockowillink), commander for the most highly decorated special operations unit of the Iraq War, joins the show to talk about taking responsibility, discipline, intensity, and leadership to the next level as outlined in Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win. The Cheat Sheet: When making a decision, worrying about variables that can't be controlled is a waste of time. A better outcome is likely if we learn to focus otherwise wasted effort on factors that can be controlled. Understand why taking ownership of your mistakes, personal issues, and outcomes always gets better results than trying to pass blame to someone else. What does discipline = freedom mean? How do you stop small weaknesses that sometimes permeate discipline from having a negative impact on significant decisions? Is there such a thing as a natural leader? And so much more...
