As I get ready for trial this week, I don't think I could have asked for a better conversation to help remind me that creativity and consistency go hand-in-hand. As lawyers, it can be easy to rely on a strategy that's worked in the past, and in some ways it's necessary. But if there's anything standing in front of a jury will teach you, it's that having to adjust your message while maintaining the mission is a core part of what it means to be a leader. My guest this week is Marty Strong. A combat veteran of the U.S. Navy SEAL Teams, he earned his graduate degree in Management from National University and would go on several VP roles as a financial advisor and is no stranger to Leadership. Over the course of his career, Marty has helped to build and lead multiple companies and is currently the CEO of Legacy Care which specializes in providing post-acute treatment to patients in need. A sought-after guest speaker and consultant, he is the author of the Amazon best-seller, Be Visionary: Strategic Leadership in the Age of Optimization, and the recently published Be Different: How Navy SEALs and Entrepreneurs, Bend, Break, or Ignore the Rules to Get Results. We discuss the differences between the academic leader and the practitioner leader, the value of reminding others of the potential you see in them, and why all of the practical training in the world can't help if someone doesn't understand their purpose. Enjoy the show!

The best podcast for military veterans, police officers, firefighters, and first responders preparing for veteran transition and life after service. Helping you plan and implement strategies to prepare for your transition into civilian life. On this episode of the Transition Drill Podcast, we sit down with Ajay James, a Retired Navy SEAL Senior Chief, and a man who has lived multiple lives across different professions. His journey is one of relentless pursuit—of challenge, of purpose, and of transformation. From his roots in Trinidad to navigating life in the U.S., joining the military, and eventually becoming a special operations warrior, Ajay's story is packed with insights for military veterans, first responders, and anyone facing a major career change.Ajay didn't start out with a clear path toward the military. Growing up in a strict household with a father who was a police officer and engineer, discipline was ingrained in him early. However, academics never felt like the right fit, and his journey was anything but conventional. Before enlisting, he worked in fields like executive protection, trained as a Muay Thai fighter, and even modeled professionally. But deep inside, he knew he wanted something greater—a challenge that pushed him beyond his limits. That challenge came in the form of the Navy SEAL Teams. Despite enlisting at 33 years old, well past the typical age for special operations candidates, Ajay committed himself to the brutal training required to become an elite warrior. Through BUD/S, he was assigned to SEAL Team 5, serving in deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Africa. He eventually achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer. But after years of military transition, deployments, and combat, Ajay faced his toughest mission yet: life after service. Leaving the SEAL Teams wasn't just a career shift—it was an identity shift. Like many military veterans, he had to navigate the complexities of finding new purpose, building a civilian career, and adjusting to a world without the structured intensity of special operations.Today, Ajay has embraced veteran transition, helping others through mentorship, fitness, and leadership development. Whether working with law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, or transitioning service members, he's proving that the mission doesn't end when the uniform comes off. His story is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the power of transformation.CONNECT WITH THE PODCAST:IG: WEBSITE: LinkedIn:SIGN-UP FOR THE NEWSLETTER:QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS:SPONSORS:Trident CoffeeGet 15% off your purchaseLink: https://tridentcoffee.comPromo Code: TDP15Human Performance TRTGet 10% off your purchaseWeb: https://hptrt.com/Promo Code: TDP

In this episode, we welcome Jason Redman to the show. He is a retired Navy SEAL (Teams 4 and 10), entrepreneur, author, and motivational speaker. He is also the author of the memoir The Trident: The Forging and Reforging of a Navy SEAL Leader and of the book Overcome: Crush Adversity with the Leadership Techniques of America's Toughest Warriors. On September 13th, 2007, he was caught in an ambush in Fallujah, Iraq where he was hit by eight rounds from automatic weapon fire. One of the rounds entered the right side of his face, entering his jaw and exiting through his nose. He managed to survive the attack and went viral during his recovery process for posting an anti-pity sign on the door of his hospital room. In this interview, we discuss what drew him to the military and specifically to the SEALs, how the darkest day of his life is probably not the one you would guess, whether it was harder to rebuild his credibility with his teammates after a leadership failure or rebuild his body after being shot, what was running through his head when he thought he was going to die, why he thinks that God gave him the strength to walk off of the battlefield after being wounded, where the motivation came from to write the sign that he hung on the door of his hospital room, how we can focus on leveling up regardless of our circumstances, and much more. There is a difference between confidence and arrogance. Distinguishing between the two is essential, especially when preparing for demanding challenges like special operations selection. The best summary of this idea might be Facta Non Verba, or "deeds not words," which, not coincidentally, is the motto of Canada's tier one SOF unit, JTF2. A realistic assessment of one's abilities, backed by experience and knowledge, underpins confidence. It involves a quiet assurance that doesn't need constant external validation because it's rooted in real achievements and a clear understanding of one's strengths and weaknesses.Arrogance or cockiness, on the other hand, is characterized by an overestimated self-view, often lacking solid evidence or achievements. Arrogant individuals typically dismiss others' advice and overplay their capabilities, potentially leading to critical oversights.Zack Ferguson is a former Navy SEAL Team 7 veteran who has deployed to Iraq, Yemen, Africa, and the UAE. He served as his platoon's Lead Sniper and Pointman and was a JTAC, Combatives Instructor, and Weapons Ordnance Specialist. He is a competitive 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu purple belt and an amateur MMA fighter. He also teaches for the Graceful Warrior Project, a non-profit organization that aims to equip in-duress women in central Africa with self-defense skills.Zack has a degree in Organizational Leadership from the University of Charleston. At his day job, he is an instructor for Defense Strategies Group, an organization of special operations veterans that provides defensive training and security solutions. One of Zack's favorite phrases is that insecurity is loud. In this episode, we talk with Zack about what that idea means to him and how he came to understand it so deeply. ----More about Zack:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/zackkferg/Personal Site: https://zackkferg.com/pages/about-zack-fergusonDefense Strategies Group: https://www.defensestrategies.us/instructorsTimestamps:00:00:22 Intro to Confidence vs. Arrogance00:03:37 Confidence in High-Stakes Environments (SOF Selection, etc.)00:04:50 Connection Between Incompetence and Overestimation00:05:25 Connection Between High-Performers and Underestimation00:06:26 Improvement Through Education00:07:25 Dunning-Kruger Effect Not limited to Any One Field00:07:44 Impact of Constructive Feedback00:08:54 Assessment and Capabilities of Winston Churchill00:11:03 Napoleon Bonaparte's Arrogance and Downfall00:16:04 Intro to Zack Ferguson 00:17:02 The Training Center LA in Beverly Hills00:18:48 Zack's Take on Confidence and Arrogance00:20:50 Jiu-Jitsu With “The Quiet Professional” vs. “The Loud Guy”00:23:45 Confidence Without Arrogance Within SEAL Teams00:24:26 Contrast: Arrogance But Not Confidence00:26:40 External Arrogance Signals Compared to Resilience00:29:35 Learning to Maintain a Stable Emotional State00:31:36 Athletes Coping With Setbacks and Not Being Deterred00:34:41 Sponsor Note: Coaching Mentor Program00:35:23 Developing Strength by Putting in the Time00:36:56 Looking for Shortcuts is a Red Flag in Candidates00:39:28 The Smartphone Generation and Emotional Regulation Issues00:42:20 Zack's Mental Struggle to Get Through “Surf Torture”00:43:26 Confidence is Earned Through Difficult Experiences00:45:32 Insecurities Are Loud00:45:40 Practical Takeaways00:47:10 Outro

I've just wrapped up an incredible episode with none other than Andy Stumpf, a man whose resume reads like an action hero's: - former Navy SEAL Team 6 Operator, Double world record holder, Skydiving and Wingsuit legend and Ironclad presenter and Podcast host. Let me tell you, our conversation was nothing short of inspiring- we covered:
Steve Clagett is the Director of Learning and Development with the Baltimore Ravens. Prior to arriving with the Ravens, he's had quite a journey and quite an experience and a pretty incredible resume, which includes serving as a White House Fellow, where he got to interact with the President of the United States and a lot of other dignitaries and people that are making decisions that influence our daily lives. He also worked within the US Navy, rising to becoming a Lieutenant Commander where he also worked with the Navy SEAL Teams. We talk about mission, we talk about values in today's conversation, and we talk about what is applicable and what may not be when it comes from the military to the sports world. We also talk about politics in today's conversation. He also was a Pat Tillman Scholar. He is someone who cares about the work that he's doing and is looking to make an impact certainly within the NFL, but beyond the NFL and in the community that he helps serve in Baltimore as well. So, this is a rich conversation where we really zoom in and think about character and how you assess for character and how you think about putting together the best possible team to compete, to contend, and ultimately to win. Steve had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “The power of the year [2020] means more now than it did then” (8:00). “We don't say he's a [Navy} SEAL. We say he's a team guy” (11:50). “Part of the competition is who you are as a teammate” (12:20). “I believe in having a hypercompetitive organization” (12:30). “You have to make sure that competition reinforces selflessness” (12:40). “For me, accountability comes in phases” (14:15). “Both [the military and the NFL] exist in some ways to inspire others” (16:40). “When I look back at my career, I think of times I could have been more of a glue guy” (19:15). “As a leader, there's that constant balance between the mission and the man” (19:25). “You need people [on the team] who get people out of their comfort zones and push the team in different directions” (21:05). “I really enjoyed leading teams and solving complex problems” (22:10). “I would define effective leadership as working with the team on establishing a vision, giving them clear roles and responsibilities, the resources they need to get the job done, and then getting out of the way” (27:50). “Ideally you want a culture of disagree and commit” (30:50). “What I've learned over the years is the value of diverse perspectives” (36:20). “When you can improve the morale, when you can improve the culture of an organization, it just makes coming to work every day better” (39:05). “The toughest decision I ever made was leaving the SEAL teams” (41:35). “Sometimes loyalty is just [to] your teammates” (44:35). “I think intrinsic motivation isn't as important as external motivation” (52:50). “I wonder sometimes if we're too hard on people for their honesty” (53:20). “One of our biggest reasons for success is we know who we are” (58:50). Additionally, I'd encourage you to check out Farming 4 Hunger and The Taylor Anne Foundation. You can also connect with Steve on LinkedIn. Thank you so much to Steve for coming on the podcast! I wrote a book called “Shift Your Mind” that was released in October of 2020, and you can order it on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Additionally, I have launched a company called Strong Skills, and I encourage you to check out our new website https://www.strongskills.co/. On episode twenty-nine of Mindful Warrior Radio, we welcome Alex Krongard. Alex served in the U.S. Navy for over 30 years, primarily in joint special operations commands and the Navy SEAL Teams. He was a member of SEAL Teams 1, 2, and 7, as well as the Naval Special Warfare Development Group. Alex was the first commanding officer of SEAL Team 7, which he commanded in Iraq from the late fall of 2003 to the spring of 2004. Later he commanded Naval Special Warfare Group 1 with responsibility for the training and readiness of the four West coast SEAL Teams and associated logistics and support units.Alex's final military jobs were as a counterterrorism director on the National Security Council staff in Washington, D.C., deputy commander of Combined Joint Task Force—Horn of Africa in Djibouti—and Deputy Operations Officer for the U.S. Africa Command. Alex retired in September 2016, as a Rear Admiral, Lower Half.Following retirement, Alex worked as an investment banker with DC Advisory in their San Francisco office, predominately in the cybersecurity and government security services sectors before serving as CEO to The COMMIT Foundation for two years. COMMIT assists military service members with their transitions to post-service life.Alex grew up outside Baltimore, Maryland and graduated from Princeton University with a degree in English Literature and from the National War College with a Masters in National Security Strategy.Alex joined me for an honest, humble, and real conversation about his time in the military. When asked about enacting change through culture, Alex shares, “The scary ones I've run into are cultures that won't change…No matter what you do, you cannot change the culture. And sometimes you're not in the right place. Or you're not in the right job to do it. Sometimes it's a type of work where the traditions are so set in stone that you cannot do anything about it. I think you must know when to say, I can't do this. For elite performers I think that's almost impossible. A lot of elite performers have not just struggled but failed and ruined their reputations because they weren't willing to say, look, I just can't do it.”When asked how you cultivate trust within teams Alex talks about shared knowledge. “Buster Howe, a two-star Royal Marine from the UK, gave us this great talk on trust. And he said trust is adding reliability. Meaning, I can be relied on to get something done. Ability: I'm able to do it. And intimacy. Intimacy being—we can have a conversation about this and not pull any punches and divide it by the perception of self-interest. So, if someone can get nothing from something and they're going to do it for you anyway and they're reliable, capable, and they're intimate with you, that's high trust.” To learn more about Mindful Warrior and Mindful Warrior Radio please follow us on Instagram @therealmindfulwarrior and check out our website at www.mindfulwarrior.com

Matt Maasdam, a Navy SEAL for 20 years, the SEAL training program's head instructor, and for 2.5 years, the carrier of the President's ‘nuclear football,' is so good in this interview that we broke it up into two episodes: Part I: Training the SEALs, and Part II: Carrying the Nuclear Football. In Part II, Navy SEAL leader Maasdam returns for a riveting bonus round. Here he tells us how he got selected to carry the infamous “Nuclear Football” for the president, what the job entails, and what he learned from his 2.5 years carrying the nuclear football within a few feet of the leader of the free world, and the many top advisors the president consults every day. Maadam has stories! He also discusses his role working with the legendary Navy SEAL Team 6 before its raid on Osama Bin Laden's compound to get the terrorist leader, and explains how a Navy pilot saved the operation by essentially crash landing his helicopter nose first, and protecting his passenger's ability to complete their mission. So tune in for more great stories and leadership lessons. I had the pleasure of sitting down with the now world famous Clint Emerson-Retired 20-year Navy SEAL, who served with the elite DEVGRU and national government agencies. Clint is the only SEAL ever inducted into the International Spy Museum. Operating from the shadows, with an instinct for running towards trouble, his unique skill sets made him the perfect author and teacher for us all to learn from to survive. Author of the numerous books, Escape The Wolf, The RUGGED LIFE, 100 deadly skills: combat edition, The right kind of crazy, 100 Deadly Skills: Survival Edition, and many more ( especially if you speak German). Clint and I spoke about his latest project, driving 11,000 miles across the USA in 16 days and filming the top people in the country and the world in Self Defense, Weapons, Combat and Survival. He has launched this all on video at - https://clintemerson.com/the-ready-room-safety-course/ We spoke about his fellow SAS Australia TV star and Double World Record Holder- Dean Stott ( https://www.deanstott.com/ )and Clint's story about getting to Australia was Hilarious, and unbelievable unless you heard it from the man himself. His insights into “Transition “ for veterans were insightful, and very helpful for everyone. But what I found most interesting, aside fro the comedian and operator side, was his humility and lack of ego, which come from these rules he follows: “ALWAYS BE THE NEW GUY. I get asked often “how did you become an expert at so many skills? ”Simple answer, I'm not an expert, no one is. But I am a lifelong “new guy”. As a new guy in the SEAL Teams, I was told 6 rules to follow for the rest of my career and if I followed them, I'd be good to go for life. 1. Always be early. 15 minutes early is considered “on time”. 2. Always stay late. There is always something to do that someone else didn't do. 3. Keep your mouth shut. If you're talking then you're not learning. 4. Keep your ears open. Listen to the details - someone's life could depend on it. 5. Volunteer for everything. It's better than being volun-told. 6. You will never be an expert. But if you're gonna try, be an expert student. “ Clint was awesome to finally chat with and very shortly after our interview this happened- more than 12 tornadoes hit where he lives!! https://www.accuweather.com/en/severe-weather/navy-seals-experience-helps-save-family-in-texas-tornado/1388090 You can find Clint at https://clintemerson.com/ On Insta at https://www.instagram.com/100deadlyskills/?hl=en At https://www.instagram.com/escapethewolf/?hl=en And at https://violentnomad.com/ I am Damian Porter , Former Special Forces Operator, High Performance Living Coach from www.eatwellmovewell.net and you can listen to my STRAIGHT TALK MIND AND MUSCLE PODCAST sponsored by www.realketonesaustralia.com the best and most effective ketone supplement on the market to reduce anxiety, enhance brain performance and supply twice as much energy as glucose. It was a real pleasure to speak with Marty Strong. As you listen, you will understand why. He is charismatic in discussion as he shares some military training with you that can be applied to business. Don Witt of The Channel Daily News, a TR Publication, interviews Marty Strong who provides some insight into his newest book – Be Visionary – being released January 1st, 2023. Marty Strong During the interview, Marty discusses the three levels of management including Strategic, Operational, and Tactical level and how they provide for a solid leadership platform. They are all required and must be in play at the same time or your competitors will beat you. Leaders need to look at their history, current market, the economy, the evolving technology trends and more to assess how their company and product fit in today's market. Then they need to develop programs for all three levels of management about what needs to change to be successful in the future market. Be Visionary! Listen in to this constructive discussion. Millions of civilians are caught in an unimaginable hell that continues to unfold in Ukraine. But what's really happening on the battlefield? What weapons are making a difference? How are the Ukrainian and Russian militaries critically different? What critical missions in/around Ukraine might American Special Forces get tasked with? We've all seen lots of retired generals on cable news. And we've all seen quick videos on social media of tanks getting blown up. In this episode, we're going deeper in a way you haven't heard before. With a guest who knows more about 21st century battle than just about anyone. He doesn't just know it academically, he knows it personally. He's a returning guest and a true leader. Former Navy SEAL DEVGRU Commander, Chris Fussell. Chris (@FussellChris) is a man who knows war. Steeled by leadership roles in the most selective Special Operations units in the military, he understands the chaos of modern combat. He led the most elite unit: the Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU) and Navy SEAL Teams 2 and 8 on some of the most critical missions of our generation. He joined us back in Episode 50 in March, 2020–right before the pandemic exploded. And a month later for a special Dispatches. Chris spent 16 years at the tip of the spear for America's most complex national security challenges and as Aide-de-Camp to Gen Stanley McChrystal as he commanded the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) in Iraq. He teaches leadership at Yale, speaks to packed audiences, and coaches top leaders worldwide. He's the author of the bestsellers, Team of Teams: New Rules of Engagement for a Complex World and One Mission: How Leaders Build a Team of Teams and now serves as President of McChrystal Group--an elite management consulting and leadership development firm in Washington. A former wrestler and with a degree in philosophy, Chris is a true warrior philosopher. He has a Master of Arts in Irregular Warfare from the Naval Postgraduate School, and received the Pat Tillman Award for highest peer-rated Special Operations Officer. His thesis focused on the interagency collaboration and intelligence sharing processes that drove effective, cross-silo collaboration during the peak of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Chris knows modern warfare. And he's gonna break down the strategic and tacticial. The political and psychological. Almost nobody you see on TV or hear on the radio has the depth of personal experience in combat that Chris does. Or the mind to pull apart what's happening beneath the headlines. This week's Urban Valor episode features U.S. Navy Seal veteran, Johnny Sotello. Johnny was a breacher and a point man in the Navy Seal Teams, which ended up taking a toll on his mental state. He tells a story about a moment of laughter he shared with his teammates as they attempted to outrun rockets launched by the enemy in Iraq. Johnny leaves us with a bucket full of effective treatments for veterans suffering from PTSD and TBI as he continues to give back by helping as many veterans as he can. This is usually where we'd tell you all about Urban Valor and our mission to help share stories of all heroic Veterans, while raising awareness in the key areas of Veteran homelessness, Veteran Mental Health, and Veteran transition, or any Veteran in need. But instead, we'd like to take the opportunity while sharing this incredibly powerful story and advice shared by Johnny Sotello, who is one of the toughest, and most incredible men I know, and just say, there's absolute STRENGTH and TOUGHNESS in getting help. Click here if you'd prefer to watch the full interview Joe understands there is an innate brilliance that exists in all of us. But he also acknowledges that leaders and managers may have challenges with motivation and inspiration inside their organizations and teams; and not just during times of volatility & uncertainty. His desire is to help create healthy and nurturing work environments for people to thrive, feel inspired, and to be the very best version of themselves. He began his 24-year military experience as a code-breaker for the National Security Agency and Department of Defense. During the last 10-years of his military career, he trained and deployed alongside Navy SEAL Teams, where he performed a highly-technical role conducting combat operations serving next to some of the most elite people on the planet in some of the most austere environments imaginable. Like most veterans, belonging, purpose, and contribution to something greater than himself were instrumental in shaping his outlook on the world. Joe considers himself a lifelong student of Servant Leadership. Upon retiring from his military role, he studied under world-renowned authors Ken and Margie Blanchard, while earning his Master of Science in Executive Leadership from the University of San Diego. Joe continued to serve as the VP of Programs and Curriculum at The Honor Foundation, a transition institute tailored for the Special Operations community (Navy SEALs, Army Green Beret, Marine Raiders, and combat support personnel). He was the designer, arranger and developer of curriculum, and responsible for the sustainability and scalability of the program experience across four campuses in three different states. Today, Joe is the Director of Leader Development inside a privately held mortgage and lending company. Outside of THF, he also sits on the board of directors for Africa Servant Leadership Development Initiative, a 501(c)3 supporting a grassroots effort in Makueni, Kenya with the desired result of building a Servant Leadership university to raise up a new generation of Servant Leaders. Joe Lives in San Diego with his wife of 22 years, two teenage boys, and his British bulldog, Rudy. If you'd like, you can sign up and follow along with some curriculum to guide you, too. These episodes are free, please share. To access the curriculum that goes with the episodes is simple- signup for only $5/month and we'll send you the videos as well as a downloadable worksheet you can use to go deeper for yourself or with a friend or your kids or students.
In the studio this week, we have Monty Heath, a decorated veteran from Navy SEAL Team 2 and Red Squadron, a former supervisor for the U.S. Navy SEAL mentorship program and BUD/S preparatory program, helping veterans develop their entrepreneur goals, a father who has endured the harrowing, near-death experience of his eleven-year-old son, and who has successfully undergone supervised psychedelic treatments to facilitate psychological introspection. Monty brings a myriad of life lessons and incredible experiences to the table in this week's TNQP episode. In this episode you will hear: If I want something, I have to put 100% into it. I can't just half-ass what I want. I've learned a lot from failure. When I started working as a Special Olympics skiing instructor, that's where humanity entered into my life. I wanted to be a corpsman, but I didn't want to help people. I wanted to hurt people. That's why I got out of it. All my friends were SEALS; all my friends were cool; all my friends were good-looking; we live these privileged, bad-ass lives, but what about someone who's born with Down Syndrome? [Special Olympics] It chipped away at my arrogance, and it installed humility. As a self-punishment, I didn't want to go work for the super cool guy organizations. I want to be with common people and common soldiers. We have to be uncomfortable to grow and evolve. Monty's 11-year-old son, George, had what started as a bad headache. That quickly developed into his spine hurting, then continuing to degrade, until it was determined in the hospital that he had contracted Bacterial Meningitis He slipped into a coma and “coded” as he lay in Monty's arms dying. He slowly began to recover, but spent 51 days in the hospital & was paralyzed. Yet, some of the first words he spelled out for his mom were: “you and dad complete each other.” The idea of waking up and writing down what you're grateful for can be a life-changer. Gratitude & attitude and gratitude is like a see-saw. If your gratitude is high you can't have a bad attitude. I started to understand the power of being vulnerable. It's disarming. Ibogaine therapy will make you go through your trauma, and make you come out on the other side better. I suggest every human being on the planet experience it. Communication & relationships to me is like new. Empathy is an important thing in life. Special Christmas Deal! Every purchase of a 2-year plan will get you 4 additional months free.
