In business as in life, there are trade-offs. This is an accepted part of the business world as well, and is usually accepted as an unavoidable truth. This includes pairs like Profit and Purpose, or Profit and Paced Growth, which can sometimes appear to be at odds with one another. But what if this didn't always have to be true? Marianne Lewis proposes a leadership strategy that can help resolve this tension. Marianne is Professor in the Carl H. Lindner College of Business at University of Cincinnati and co-author of Both/And Thinking: Embracing Creative Tensions to Solve Your Toughest Problems. In this Tugboat Institute® talk, Marianne makes an argument for finding a way to embrace, rather than cave to tensions within an organization. It starts with a shift in mindset. Watch and be inspired to shift your own mindset, and make room for Both/And, instead of simply Either/Or.

Send us a MessageIn this episode, Sue Tetzlaff discusses the importance of trust in senior leadership, particularly in the healthcare sector. She outlines two main categories of trust-building activities: everyday actions and responses during challenging times. She provides real life examples and practical takeaways for leaders related to strengthening trust and teamwork, even in the face of uncertainty and fear. There are two categories of trust-building activities in leadership: our everyday actions and our responses to episodic crises. Our day-to-day trust-building activities should not be neglected during times of crises.Trust can be diminished - or strengthened - during challenging times.Fear is a major contributor to silo creation, working against our heightened need for teamwork and collaboration.Leaders must anchor their teams during uncertainty by remaining calm and connected.Acknowledging threats while reinforcing stability is crucial for maintaining trust.Visibility and accessibility of leaders are essential during challenging times.Reminding teams of their past resilience can strengthen trust and teamwork.Need help improving the culture, performance, and results of your healthcare organization? This week on Tea & Timbits, we're tackling that mysterious, all-powerful force known as “culture”—you know, the thing that happens when you're not in the room but still shapes how people act, collaborate, and react when someone leaves dirty dishes in the sink.We talk about:✅ Why leaders always set the culture (even by doing nothing)✅ How mindset becomes the message✅ Why panicking in a meeting is like throwing spaghetti at a wall (spoiler: still a mess)✅ The surprising link between belief systems and burnoutIf you've ever wondered whether culture is something you “have” or something you “do,” we've got thoughts (and jokes) to share.
Sometimes your boss is the biggest obstacle to your leadership growth. Whether they're dismissive, manipulative, or flat-out toxic, their behavior or opinion of you does not define your worth. After watching too many women leaders suffer under harmful male leadership recently, it feels crucial to share actionable strategies to help you trust your instincts and keep your intuition grounded in truth. It's time for you to reclaim your power even in environments designed to diminish it.When your boss won't advocate for you, it's time to advocate for yourself—boldly and strategically. In this episode, I share how to get visible beyond your direct boss, surround yourself with mentors and allies, and cultivate your leadership brand regardless of what your boss says (or doesn't say) about you. You'll learn how to set unapologetic boundaries, document manipulative behavior, and protect your emotional safety. We talk about how to navigate power dynamics with intention. By understanding your boss's motivations and insecurities, you can learn to protect your own energy and make more informed, strategic choices about how to engage. This clarity will allow you to choose your battles wisely, preserve your peace, and lead yourself first. In doing so, you will model a more grounded and powerful style of leadership for those around you, even in the absence of support from above.Remember, you always have a choice. Sometimes, navigating a “strategic stay” is the right move for right now. Other times, the best thing you can do is leave. This episode is an invitation for you to consider what growth, alignment, and success look like on your terms. Because even when you're being held down, you are still leading. Your job is not to shrink in the shadows of someone else's smallness. Your job is to stand tall in your truth, build your brand, and be the leader of your life. Over the last few years, I've been developing curriculum and resources that help leaders establish trust with their teams and enable teammates to build trust with one another. Because different people have different needs around trust, it can feel tricky to know exactly the right formula to help build trust with others. In spite of that, there are plenty of small things you can do every single day to help people understand who you are, how you operate, how you hold space for others, and how you navigate messiness that will inevitably help you build trust in any relationship. When people understand these pieces of you, they have the information they need to know if you are someone they can trust over the long haul. In this episode, we explore what a lack of trust looks like in an organization (perhaps this will look and feel familiar to you?). We talk about why trust is a foundational element required for high performance and a healthy culture, and what outcomes you can expect when you take the time to build trust within a team environment. Then, I give you simple, practical steps you can take to start building more trust today, no matter the current state of your team or organization. There is a common misconception that trust and the vulnerability required to build it are “soft,” but I would like to invite you to view trust as one of your key strategies for building authentic, meaningful relationships that yield great outcomes. Send us a textWhen life unexpectedly shatters your plans, do you see rubble or building blocks for something greater? For Betsy Pepine, a corporate layoff while suddenly single with two toddlers became the catalyst for an entrepreneurial journey that would transform her life and countless others.Raised with the expectation she'd become a physician like her father, Betsy initially compromised by working in the pharmaceutical industry after pivoting from pre-med to business in college. Though financially rewarding, the work left her feeling disconnected from her purpose. When corporate downsizing forced her hand, she embraced the opportunity to completely reinvent her professional identity in real estate. The transition wasn't easy. The first six months tested her resolve as she confronted an industry culture that felt reminiscent of high school politics. But Betsy persevered, discovering that while houses might sell themselves, the real fulfillment came from guiding clients through significant life transitions. What truly sets Betsy's story apart is how she evolved from solopreneur to visionary business leader. When a key employee left citing the lack of family atmosphere, growth opportunities, and community involvement, it sparked a profound shift in Betsy's approach to leadership. She established core values centered on putting her team first, implementing policies like a zero-tolerance no-gossip rule that fortified an award-winning company culture. As her brokerage flourished, Betsy strategically expanded with vertical businesses—a real estate school, title company, mortgage company, and property management firm—all serving the same client base while creating additional value streams. Her commitment to community impact led to establishing a nonprofit addressing affordable housing needs, perfectly aligning with her mission to improve and empower others' lives.Through her book "Breaking the Box," Betsy now helps others identify and overcome the limitations they place on themselves—whether from gender expectations, family origin, or societal norms. Her journey reminds us that our greatest setbacks often clear the path to our most authentic success, and that time—not money or status—is our most precious asset.Ready to break free from your own boxes? Dr. Laura welcomes Mike Horne PhD, author of The People Dividend and an executive and organization development coach, to the show to talk about his book and why he's drawn to making people and organizations better versions of who and what they currently are. Mike began his career in labour management relations, which led him into the world of learning and development. Mike's driving question has always been about how he could live out his humanistic values and help people. As he says “I'm not afraid to be called a helper.”Mike and Dr. Laura discuss organizational culture, remote and hybrid work, and the impact of helping professions. Mike describes his book, The People Dividend, as being about humanistic values as a way of creating engagement. The words he says are the most important are dignity, kindness, and respect. And I think it's just another way that we're talking about differences in the workplace. There's all kinds of backlash around diversity, equity and inclusion. In this second part of our interview with Kevin Eikenberry, author of "Flexible Leadership," we explore how implementing flexible leadership strategies to navigate complex situations and overcome challenges, drives organizational success. Why Implementing Flexible Leadership Strategies Matters for Women Leaders While understanding the flexible leadership mindset is essential, the real value comes from implementation. For women leaders navigating today's complex business environment, implementing flexible leadership strategies creates a powerful advantage in overcoming traditional barriers. According to recent research from McKinsey, companies with women in executive positions are 30% more likely to outperform their competitors, highlighting the business impact when women leaders successfully implement adaptive approaches. Mastering Leadership Flexors: Key Strategies for Women Leaders At the core of implementing flexible leadership strategies is what Eikenberry calls "flexors" – paired leadership approaches that might initially seem contradictory but are actually complementary dimensions of effective leadership: Results vs. People Focus for Women Leaders Rather than permanently choosing one approach, women leaders who implement flexible leadership strategies consciously shift their emphasis depending on what the situation requires: "This isn't binary," explains Eikenberry. "The right answer is how to lean in the direction of each. During crunch time before a deadline, I might focus more on results, but afterward shift toward supporting my people's needs." Decisive vs. Collaborative Decision-Making Strategies Women leaders can adjust their decision-making approach based on: Urgency of the situation Expertise required for quality decisions Need for buy-in during implementation Development requirements of team members Directive vs. Coaching Communication Strategies Effective women leaders consciously choose their communication approach: When clear direction is needed versus when development is the priority How much structure to provide versus autonomy to encourage When to speak with authority versus when to facilitate dialogue Implementing flexible leadership strategies means consciously selecting the appropriate approach rather than defaulting to habit or personal preference. Click the image to learn more. Practical Implementation Strategies for Women Leaders Women leaders can immediately begin implementing flexible leadership strategies through these practical applications: Context-Based Decision Framework for Women Leaders Assess whether the situation is clear, complicated, complex, or chaotic Consider what specific outcomes are required in this particular context Determine whether to decide independently, seek input, or fully delegate Match your leadership approach to the urgency, complexity, and expertise needed Adaptive Communication Strategies for Women Leaders Develop multiple ways to deliver the same message for different stakeholders Adjust your communication style based on audience and circumstance Know when directness will be more effective than collaboration Create communication approaches that overcome potential gender bias Research shows that 36% of women leaders report being interrupted in meetings, compared to just 15% of men in similar positions. Implementing flexible communication strategies helps women leaders maintain their effectiveness despite these challenges. Strategic Feedback Systems for Women Leaders Women leaders who implement flexible leadership strategies create robust feedback mechanisms: Structure psychological safety for honest communication Ask specific questions rather than general ones ("How could I improve my listening in today's meeting?" versus "How am I doing?") Build trust through consistency between words and actions Recognize that positional power may inhibit candid responses As Eikenberry notes: Implementing Change Leadership Strategies for Women Leaders

Transformative Leadership Conversations with Winnie da Silva
"I think we overestimate the importance of knowing and underestimate the power of listening." - James MisnerWhat if the biggest thing holding back real change is the way we try to create it? In this conversation of Transformative Leadership Conversations, I speak with James Misner — a leader, storyteller, and deep thinker who challenges how we show up for others, especially those on the margins. His perspective is both disarming and inspiring. James pushes us to rethink our assumptions about helping, belonging, and transformation — and why presence might just be more powerful than any plan. This episode is a call to slow down, to stay curious, and to build something deeper than solutions: real human connection. You'll hear us discuss:Why belonging isn't just a warm feeling but a foundational need that must come before trust, belief, or any lasting change. How systems that focus on outcomes instead of relationships can unintentionally harm the very people they are meant to support. The importance of being willing to walk with someone through their pain and uncertainty, rather than trying to rescue them with quick fixes. What can shift when we stop treating people as problems to solve and start seeing them as neighbors with stories, strengths, and dignity.James's personal journey of letting go of the pressure to always have the right answer and choosing instead to offer presence and patience. How discomfort and tension can be invitations to stay and engage more deeply, rather than reasons to step back. The quiet but radical impact of showing up consistently, without an agenda, simply to let someone know they're not alone.ResourcesJames Misner on The Kipos Group | LinkedInWinnie da Silva on LinkedIn | On the Web | Substack | Email - winnie@winnifred.org
