In this heartfelt and painful segment, The Non-Prophets discuss a mother's public reckoning with sending her son to conversion therapy. Connie Hoying, mother of Pentatonix singer Scott Hoying, recounts the regret and harm caused by trying to "pray the gay away" in her new memoir. The panel dives into the psychological damage of so-called “ex-gay therapy,” its religious justifications, and why it must be seen—and banned—as a form of torture. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of November 8,  2024. Starting off, "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" is a delightful adaptation of a book and an excellent family film to kick off the holiday season. Andy actually sat down with Producers Chet Thomas and Darin McDaniel of the show in a Movie Show Digital Extra, which you can find at this link.  Also in theaters is the action suspense movie called "Elevation," which is basically “A Quiet Place” only if the creatures can't go above 8000 ft instead of not being able to see. And, a Luc Besson co-written action movie called "Weekend in Taipei" starring Luke Evans, Sung Kang, and a Taiwanese action star named Gwei Lun-Me, has some fun action pieces. As for streaming, if you like Pentatonix but don't want to hear them sing very much, you could watch "Meet Me Next Christmas" on Netflix, where Christina Milian is hoping to get some tickets to meet a potential beau at the concert on Christmas Eve, but perhaps she'll realize that everything she was looking for may have been right in front of her the whole time! The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisodes, taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics.  Based in the beautiful beehive state, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen.   Listen regularly on your favorite platform, at kslnewsradio.com, kslpodcasts.com, or on the KSL NewsRadio App. Join the conversation and get the latest 'nerdly' news on Facebook @FanEffectShow. The movie kicks off in... Chicago. But if you think that the Pentatonix are only popular in New York City, you'd be incorrect. Layla is at the airport to catch a flight home to New York City, but her flight is delayed. She FaceTimes her boyfriend, Tanner, and says, "Don't worry, I'll be home before our annual Pentatonix Christmas concert." He rolls his eyes and reminds her—and us—that they go every year. She says, "AND IT'S AWESOME." Tanner, not so sure. But she's taking the delay well because she gets lounge access. While getting food, she bumps into a good-looking fella with a ton of layers on, and he has a couple of teacups in his hands—he says they're Christmas gifts. She sits down, prepared to watch It's a Wonderful Life on her phone and drink some wine, but ANOTHER hunk sits next to her. They immediately start hitting it off. His name is James—some might say Jimmy, but who knows? She finds one of the teacups in her bag, and he's like, "Just keep it. Maybe you can fill it with..." and they both say "paperclips" at the same time. She introduces him to Pentatonix, and he's like, “I gotta get out of here ASAP." His flight is boarding. On his way out, he shoots his shot—he says, "In one year, if for some reason you're single, let's meet up at the Christmas Eve Pentatonix show." She says, “I'm flattered, but probably not happening, maybe.”Cut to one year later, and she did use that cup for paperclips and whatnot. She is still with Tanner. She goes home early to set up a romantic night with Tanner, but... he's with another girl! IT IS SO OVER WITH TANNER! She's moping around with her BFF and talking about airport James. Her friend tries to look up airport James on social media. Suddenly, she remembers THE PLAN! But she doesn't have Pentatonix tickets this year because Tanner wanted to go see Macklemore. And tickets are sold out. She's bummed, but then she sees a picture of James buying a ticket on the website! She's committed to getting the tickets! But no luck. So, as a last-ditch effort, they decide to give Impromptu a shot—a service that can get you anything you need, at a cost. And who works at Impromptu? Teacup guy from the airport. His name is Teddy. Layla is going to be his client. He knows he knows her from somewhere but can't place it. He looks up to see if they have a ticket in the database, but no luck. He says he knows a guy, but he has to go see him in person. She insists on going with him. His guy is nowhere to be found, but she thinks she found a guy who's willing to sell his ticket to her. So, they go to meet him at this bar. She pays him more than she has by giving him a necklace. Turns out, it was a ticket for last year! While that's happening, Teddy has slid into the Pentatonix DMs. They don't respond right away, but Teddy keeps sending them info, including that he got pepper-sprayed—he really needs that ticket. While waiting to hear back from them, Teddy gets a lead—one of his clients is interested in potentially selling his ticket. Turns out, the clients are very odd but interested in giving them the ticket in exchange for them picking up a Chanel purse for him. They get to the Chanel store and have to wait in a very long line. Teddy flirts with a Chanel worker, and it's looking good because that worker is going to snag the last one for them. But Layla gets "Christmas shoe'd" and decides they deserve the bag instead. Teddy keeps messaging Pentatonix, and Pentatonix is now cheering for Teddy and Layla to end up together. And after Teddy cooks her an amazing meal, Layla might be rooting for that too. Suddenly, Teddy gets good news—his cousin has two Pentatonix tickets. When they get there, they find out it's a bit more complicated. In order to get those two tickets, they have to team up to win a Christmas lip-sync competition. They work on it, then take a pit stop in the kitchen, and it's at this point that she sees the same little teacup. It all comes together that they met last Christmas. There's a baking montage, and the sparks are beginning to fly hard. She ends up falling asleep on the couch. The next day, they go to the performance and crush it... AND IT ENDS WITH A KISS. They... get second place. The Pentatonix have been keeping up with it on social media, and even though they think Teddy and Layla should be together, they think Layla has the right to make a well-rounded choice. So, Layla is going to get a ticket, but Teddy has to come too and play Santa. Turns out, the Pentatonix just want to know if Teddy has a crush on Layla. And it turns out Layla has completely fallen for Teddy. She decides she's going to go to the show to get TEDDY, not James. So she heads out into the snow as that classic Christmas song, "Hallelujah," plays. James gets to the venue and stands outside, flowers in hand, waiting on Layla. He starts walking away as she runs in. She gets her ticket from the box office and decides she needs to see Teddy ASAP. She goes to run backstage and bumps into James first. She says, "Oh hey, James, I'm not here for you, I'm here for Teddy. Sorry about that." Turns out, he was there to meet another woman anyway.Teddy very nervously comes down the chimney on stage as Santa and makes a big love declaration, hoping that Layla is listening. She's not, though, because she's still trying to get in through the back door. Finally, she runs back up to the front, barges in, and yells that she feels the same way. They share a big kiss as the Pentatonix sing around them.

Break 1: MOG   STORY 1: Father of alleged Apalachee High School shooter arrested Colin Gray, the father of Colt Gray, the 14-year-old accused of a deadly school shooting at Apalachee High School, faces multiple charges including involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to children for allegedly allowing his son to possess a weapon. Colt Gray is charged with felony murder for the shooting that killed four people, including two students and two teachers, and injured nine others. The shooting has deeply affected the Winder community, leading to vigils and calls for support. Investigations are ongoing, with federal and state officials involved. The tragedy has prompted a broader conversation about gun violence and school safety. STORY 2:  Apalachee High School Staff Used Crisis Badge System Also Used in Gwinnett Schools The Centegix CrisisAlert badge system, recently implemented in Barrow County Schools, was put to the test during the deadly shooting at Apalachee High School. The system, which Gwinnett County Public Schools began using last year, allows staff to alert administrators and law enforcement to emergencies by pressing a button on their badges. In Barrow County, the system helped quickly trigger a lockdown and alert responders, potentially limiting the tragedy. The shooting, which resulted in four deaths and nine injuries, highlighted the system's effectiveness in enhancing school safety and response. STORY 3:  Paw Patrol, Pentatonix Coming To Gas South Arena The PAW Patrol is returning with a new live stage show, “PAW Patrol Live! A Mighty Adventure,” at Gas South Arena in Duluth on November 16 and 17. Tickets, starting at $25, go on sale September 13 at www.pawpatrollive.com. Key stressors include lacking certain skills (43%) and difficulty staying updated on job requirements (75%). While 69% see their role as a long-term career opportunity and 70% would stay with their employer if offered a permanent position, many struggle with information overload. Effective training resources—whether in-person, online, or paper—are crucial for reducing mistakes and enhancing job satisfaction. STORY 5:  Boy shot in the head raising money for hospital that saved his life Harry Studley, who survived a near-fatal head injury from a pellet gun at 18 months old, is set to walk a 5K to raise funds for the hospital that saved him. Now nine, Harry faces ongoing challenges including epilepsy, partial blindness, and cognitive issues. He and his father, Ed, will participate in the Grand Walk for the Grand Appeal on September 15, aiming to support Bristol Royal Hospital for Children's Bluebell Ward, where Harry received critical care. The family has created a fundraising page to support the hospital and its staff. We'll be back in a moment   Break 3: INGLES 10   STORY 6:     Seckinger Postpones Homecoming Game After Apalachee Shooting Seckinger High School has indefinitely postponed its Homecoming football game and pep rally in response to the deadly shooting at Apalachee High School. “At the end of that first year, I did a pops concert. I developed the formula that I use now, which is to make it sound a lot like the actual songs. You give a lot of soloists opportunities to sing solos, especially in the verses which are harder because of the syncopation. We had a band that we hired: some horns, a rhythm section. The kids loved it, and we had 750 people come watch it.”J.D. Frizzell is the Director of Fine Arts and Director of Vocal Music at Briarcrest Christian School in Memphis, TN. Welcome to the final episode of our three-part “Listening to Black Creators” series for Black History Month. On today's show, Heather gets to sit down with Kevin Olusola, a member of the three-time Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble Pentatonix. Kevin shares his story, which he credits solely to God and his call to “radical reliance.” Oh, Kevin acknowledges that he had to do his part by putting in the work to become a masterful musician; however, it was God who ultimately opened doors and provided incredible coincidences of timing that really were not coincidences at all.In this episode you will learn how Kevin went from medical school at Yale, to performing cello beatboxing for Yo-Yo Ma, to creating a viral video that landed him on a reality television show and eventually led to him becoming the fifth member of Pentatonix. This story is so wild only God could have orchestrated it. But first, it's time for Social Toolkit. Heather continues walking us through some of the obstacles facing Black creators online. Today, she focuses on algorithm bias and pay discrepancies. Guest Bio Kevin Olusola is a member of the Grammy Award-winning musical group Pentatonix, grew up in the small town of Owensboro, Kentucky, the son of a Nigerian psychiatrist and a Grenadian nurse. At an early age, Kevin began learning piano, cello, and saxophone. He performed at Carnegie Hall twice as soloist on the cello and saxophone and has appeared on NPR's From the Top. Kevin enrolled at Yale University where he studied pre-med and East Asian Studies. He spent 18 months in Beijing becoming fluent in Chinese as a part of his Yale fellowship. While in college, Kevin began developing “cello boxing,” his innovative blending of intricate beatboxing with classical cello performances. And in 2009, he won second place in the “Celebrate and Collaborate with Yo-Yo Ma” international competition. Ma would call Kevin's cello-boxing version of “Dona Nobis Pacem” both “inventive and unexpected.” In 2011, Kevin's “Julie-O” cello boxing YouTube video was featured by CBS, AOL, Huffington Post, and the Washington Post, among others. Kevin was also named one of 100 “History Makers in the Making” by NBC's TheGrio and was hand-chosen by Quincy Jones to represent him in concert at the 2012 Montreux Jazz Festival alongside Bobby McFerrin and Chick Corea.
