Small-cap specialist Dr John McBain likes to joke that he's still in Australia because he lost his return ticket to Scotland in the 1970s. In this episode of Success and More Interesting Stuff, John describes how his career in obstetrics and gynaecology took off on his arrival in Melbourne in 1976 and took him in directions no one could have predicted. From early entrepreneurial success delivering newspapers as a Glasgow schoolboy, this canny Scot surmounted his humble beginnings to become a pioneer in the development of IVF. From this he profited enough to turn his hand to full-time investing when others might choose to retire. Instead he chooses to engage with entrepreneurs innovating in sectors as diverse as biotechnology, digital agriculture and fintech. A string of brilliant stock selections, including a major foray into Afterpay before it listed, has made John a prominent figure in Australia's small company environment.
Members of Seattle's biggest bands of the 90s rock scene were often dabbling in side projects, like Temple of the Dog, Mad Season, and Brad. Matt Cameron and John McBain had previously played together in Hater, and along with Soundgarden bassist Ben Sheppard started Wellwater Conspiracy By the time they got around to album number two, Sheppard left, leaving Cameron and McBain to make the 1999's Brotherhood of Electric: Operational Directives, along with some friends. One of those friends is Josh Homme, not long after the end of Kyuss and just as Queens of the Stone Age is starting up, who hops on board for vocals on three tracks. Cameron tackles most of the rest and does a nice job with some 60s-influenced garage rock tunes that wouldn't sound out of place on a Hives record. Unfortunately, the side-project nature of the band leaves room for lots of noodling and experimentation. Some good, most not, which turns what would have been a tight, rockin' record into a much more bloated affair in need of a editor. Songs in this Episode: Intro - Good Pushin' 13:09 - Compellor 20:55 - Right Of Left Field 23:38 - B.O.U. 28:07 - Van Vanishing Outro - Red Light Green Light Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Last week Ngalia elder Kado Muir addressed the United Nations expert mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, speaking about Western Australia's outdated Aboriginal Heritage laws, and the state government's failure to redress the problems that allowed Juukan Gorge to be destroyed. Kado Muir's voice joins the Kimberley Land Council, the WA Alliance of Native Title Representative Bodies and Service Providers, the Australian Archaelogical Association, and the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists, who are all concerned about what has been called a “façade of modernisation”. Today on Understorey, Adrian Glamorgan brings you ANTAR's John McBain, who adds to these many voices by calling for the McGowan government to act on our shared cultural and human rights obligations. Will Aboriginal people be allowed to speak freely, "straight up," and able to say no? Photo: Juukan Gorge, by Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura Aboriginal Corporation (arr. A Glamorgan)
10 Feb 2021 - Centuria Capital Group Limited (ASX:CNI) Joint CEO, John McBain talks 1H21 results & outlook, transactions and financial highlights.
John and Ben kick off 2021 by going back to 1999 and discussing Wellwater Conspiracy's sophomore album, Brotherhood of Electric: Operational Directives. Steeped in 1960s psych and trading off between hooky garage tracks and instrumental interludes, Brotherhood of Electric displays a breadth of songwriting and layered accompaniment which rewards repeat listens. Something of a supergroup, the band consists of the two man lineup of John McBain (ex-Monster Magnet) and Matt Cameron (Soundgarden, Pearl Jam) along with several guest musicians including frequent contributions from Josh Homme of Kyuss and a then nascent Queens of the Stone Age. The compilation we mentioned in the episode was called Succour - The Terrascope Benefit Album.
