Episode 50 - Murdock and Marvel: 1999 Part 2 Last week we closed the curtain on the first volume of Daredevil, and now we are reaching the end of the millennium itself, as comics continue to barrel towards their own version of Y2K. Sales keep dropping and more publishers leave the field, but signs of life start to show if you look in the right places. It's 1999, and comics still are not dead. This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 1999. The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #3-9, Earth X #0-2 and 5-7, Mutant X #6, Avengers #15-16, Avengers Forever #8, Black Widow #1-3, Spider-Man: Chapter One #9 and 12, Fantastic Four #21 and 23, Uncanny X-Men #370, Wolverine/Punisher: Revelations #3, Deathlok #1, along with Marvel Masterworks: Daredevil #1 and the Avengers 1999 and Contest of Champions graphic novels Writing: Kevin Smith (#1-8), David Mack (#9) Pencils: Joe Quesada (#1-9) Inks: Jimmy Palmiotti (#1-9) The year for Daredevil actually began in November 1998 when the first book of the Guardian Devil storyline hit comic book stores. We briefly touched on what happened during the first two books a couple weeks ago, but with this storyline taking up half the year – we'll be looking at the story in-depth as our spotlight story this week. After the guardian Devil storyline ended in June 1999, we didn't get another book in the main Daredevil title until December. When we get the start of another multi-book storyline called Parts of a Hole with a new writer in David Mack. We won't go into much detail on this until we look at Daredevil in 2000, but it starts with The Kingpin sends a hitman after a stoolie being questioned by Nelson and Murdock. This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil volume 2 #1-8 November 1998 – June 1999 “Guardian Devil” Recap Why We Picked This Story Daredevil Rapid Fire Questions The Takeaway Setting up the foundation to the future. Perhaps best known for American Flagg! at First Comics, artist Howard Chaykin broke into comics under the tutelage of three masters: Gil Kane, Wally Wood, and Neal Adams. He only dabbled in the world of superheroes, preferring instead more less costumed genres, like sci-fi, horror, and adventure. His most mainstream work includes the first ten issues of the adaptation of Star Wars, the World of Krypton miniseries, and a run on Micronauts. Aside from dozens of issues of American Flagg!, Howard also took on such classic characters as The Shadow and Blackhawks, as well as his own stories, such as Time[squared] and Black Kiss. He started mixing in television and film projects, including Mutant X and The Flash. And then there's a ton of other comics credits we're not going to get to. So if you're still reading this, stop and listen to the episode! ARTICLE ON JOHN WICK 4 FROM THEWRAP.COM Final 'John Wick 4' Trailer Has Keanu Reeves Facing Off Against Action Movie Royalty Lionsgate has dropped its third and final trailer for "John Wick: Chapter 4." The Keanu Reeves-led action franchise is the brightest bright spot on Lionsgate's theatrical slate and their most obvious hope for a 2023 breakout. To those in the know, the likes of Chinese action-god Donnie Yen (also seen by Americans in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," "Shanghai Knights" and "xXx: The Return of Xander Cage") and direct-to-DVD and VOD action king Scott Adkins (also seen by American theatergoers in "Doctor Strange" and "Expendables 2") qualify as added value elements. The film will give these folks a higher-profile platform, at least in terms of mainstream Hollywood audiences, to show off their star power. Clancy Brown showing up and subtly riffing on his "Highlander" appearance is for fans old enough to have kids who can buy an R-rated movie ticket sans parent or guardian. Directed by Chad Stahelski, "John Wick: Chapter 4" sees the beleaguered not-so-retired hitman accepting an offer from the High Council to settle his life debt. The last three "Wick" flicks pulled near-unprecedented commercial growth, going from $88 million worldwide in 2014, to $171 million in 2017, to $322 million in 2019. In pre-COVID times, the big questions were whether a fourth chapter could continue that momentum and whether the franchise would expand its overseas muscle. "John Wick: Chapter 4" opens theatrically on March 24th Here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjRHZEUamCc ARTICLE FROM POLYGON.COM John Wick Chapter 4 puts one of our greatest action heroes in a giant prosthetic suit The John Wick movies are a stuntman's franchise. Directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch are legendary stunt performers and coordinators, and one of the joys of their movies getting bigger with each installment is seeing Stahelski (who now directs the films solo) fold in more and more action pros from around the world, like Mark Dacascos of Wu Assassins fame or The Raid's Yayan Ruhian. John Wick: Chapter 4 continues this tradition, notably with Hong Kong star Donnie Yen and the king of direct-to-video action himself, Scott Adkins - but like we've never seen him before. Scott Adkins is normally seen doing insanely athletic kicks. He has the sort of physique you might expect from someone who must convincingly portray action heroes who can knock someone's lights out with his shins. Here, on the other hand, is how he will appear as "Killa" in John Wick: Chapter 4:Adkins is playing against type here in a way that feels a lot like Colin Farrell's Penguin in The Batman - and previous Adkins movies like Accident Man: Hitman's Holiday show off the action star's willingness to have fun while kicking ass. Regardless of how much pain Adkins dishes out (or doesn't!) as Killa, John Wick: Chapter 4 is Adkins' highest-profile role to date. It may be a lot of people's first exposure to him. What a kick they're gonna get out of seeing what he's usually up to, once they dig into his back catalog. John Wick: Chapter 4 is in theaters March 24th. SCOTT ADKINS BIO (FROM WIKIPEDIA) Scott Adkins (born 17 June 1976) is an English actor, film producer and martial artist. He is best known for his role as the Russian prison fighter Yuri Boyka in the Undisputed franchise. He has played Yuri Boyka in the 2006 film Undisputed II: Last Man Standing and its two sequels, Undisputed III: Redemption (2010) and Boyka: Undisputed (2017); Casey Bowman in the 2009 film Ninja and its 2013 sequel Ninja: Shadow of a Tear; French in the 2018 film The Debt Collector and its 2020 sequel Debt Collectors (starring alongside Louis Mandylor). He worked in four films with his idol Jean-Claude Van Damme: The Shepherd: Border Patrol, Assassination Games, Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning and The Expendables 2. He also had starring roles in The Legend of Hercules, Wolf Warrior and Ip Man 4: The Finale playing the main antagonist in all three films, and also appeared in The Bourne Ultimatum, Zero Dark Thirty, and the Marvel projects Mutant X, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Doctor Strange. In 2022, he starred in Day Shift with Jamie Foxx and Dave Franco, and will appear in John Wick: Chapter 4 alongside Keanu Reeves in 2023.https://johnwick.movie/film/john-wick-4https://twitter.com/johnwickmovie#JohnWick4

Break out the cloning machine because we've got not one, but two amazing guests on the same episode this week! That's right, in another Oren Only edition, the Bandits welcome writers Howard Mackie and Terry Kavanagh to the pod. Best known for playing a major role in the pitching, planning, and writing of the infamous Spider-Man story, The Clone Saga, the two did amazing work together and separately in 80s and 90s Marvel. For just a sampling, Mackie oversaw the New Universe line, launched the Danny Ketch version of Ghost Rider, and wrote a number of X-titles, including X-Factor, Mutant X, Gambit, and Rogue. Not to be outdone, Kavanagh edited Marvel Comics Presents, wrote such titles as Marc Spector: Moon Knight and X-Man, and, with Alex Saviuk, introduced Spider-Man's enduring Spider-Armor. So strap in, Banditos, because this one goes deep into the lore and heavy on the funny! You can find Howard and Terry on Facebook: just search for their names._______________________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Will reads Amazing Spider-Man by Nick Spencer vol 15: What Cost Victory, Guardians of the Galaxy by Al Ewing vol 3: We're Super Heroes, and Infinite Destinies (all from 2021). Steve reads Alpha Flight vol 2 #13-20, Mutant X #1-6, and Quicksilver #7-13, which ran into two crossovers: Live Kree or Die (Iron Man vol 3 #7, Captain America vol 3 # 8, and Avengers vol 3 #10), and The Siege of Wundagore (Heroes for Hire vol 1 #15-16 and Heroes for Hire / Quicksilver Annual 1998).
There's a new mutant in Town, hide your worms. United just can't win; Ken's Arsenal turning corners; Do Tottenham actually even want to win? And more ...
The actor reflects on his role as Lex Luthor on Lois And Clark The New Adventures Of Superman while he was working on Mutant X.
In this episode:Mike and Ed discuss Magneto's takeover of Santo Marco. Magneto is calling his (presumably) super-powered lieutenants “mutants”. Is that the term we should be using instead of “super-powered individuals”? It is definitely more catchy. Did he recruit his “mutants” or did he create them the way Dr. Doom did? And why did they abandon the country just as they seemed to be in full control of it?In this issue:Magneto has gathered four fellow mutants to his cause: Quicksilver, the Scarlet Witch, Mastermind, and Toad. Together, they take over the tiny island republic of Santo Marco. Professor X meets Magneto on the astral plane and pleads with him to stop attacking humanity, and to work with him for the betterment of all. Magneto rejects Professor X's pleas for peace and cooperation. This leads to Professor X leading the X-Men to Santo Marco, where they plan to free the country from the iron grip of Magneto. The X-Men are outmatched by Magneto and his team, and while on the brink of defeat Professor X swoops in to save them. He shields them from an explosion and is likely concussed by it, and maybe even on death's door. Magneto and his team leave the island.Assumed before the next episode:People are wondering whether mutants are made or born. This episode takes place:After Santo Marco has been freed from tyranny. Our heroes mercifully wrap up their Mutant X miniseries as they recap the last 7 episodes of season 1. Who is in charge of admissions at Genome-X Academy? What exactly is a "feral mutant"? Why does this show sound like it was filmed in a leather store? Mike and Rob briefly address these questions and more as they look to escape this multiverse for a new adventure!Theme by Jimmy Thain (@CititzenThain on Instagram)Follow us on Facebook @MultiversalSoldierPodIf you like the show, rate and review wherever you listen to podcasts
Our Heroes test their resolve as they dig deeper into the Multiversal Anomaly that is Mutant X. What is this show's obsession with Sandra Bullock's "The Net"? Where is Sanctuary on a map? Why is Adam so creepy? The answers don't actually matter because we get some really X-cellent Guest Stars in this otherwise nonsensical chunk of episodes!Theme by Jimmy Thain (@CititzenThain on Instagram)Follow us on Facebook @MultiversalSoldierPodIf you like the show, rate and review wherever you listen to podcasts

Our Heroes begin their next adventure: Mutant X! This Canadian produced series (available on Tubi) somehow ran in syndication for 3 seasons throughout Canada and parts of the US....and Mike and Rob are baffled by its mere existence after almost being sued out of the Multiverse entirely. The series focused on a group of "New Mutants" and their benevolent leader/disgraced geneticist Adam. Don't expect any cameos from familiar faces, or sly Marvel Easter Eggs....they legally weren't allowed to do any. Think of it kind of like Degrassi: The Mutant Years.Theme by Jimmy Thain (@CititzenThain on Instagram)Follow us on Facebook @MultiversalSoldierPodIf you like the show, rate and review wherever you listen to podcasts

Today we host Abdulhameed Sabban (aka Tudi) a comic book aficionado and expert. We start discussing the DC superhero universe and explore the parallels between Superman and the story of the prophet Moses. We then analyze the Fox vs. Marvel war and the reasons behind the bad blood between the two companies. We then reminisce about the comics we grew up on in Saudi Arabia, Tintin, Mickey Magazine, Bassem Magazine, and Majed Magazine. We later discuss the conspiracy theory that Stan Lee did not invent Spiderman. We finally bring it home by discussing Comics in the Middle East including The 99 and the highly anticipated Bilal movie. In 2001, producer Avi Arad and Marvel Studios brought the world "Mutant X," a sci-fi television series VERY LOOSELY connected to the X-Men comics (due to legal issues). Despite its tangential-at-best connection to the X-Universe, Trev and Joe have decided to give the show its day, by watching and reporting on both the pilot and the 66th and final episode (we'll leave it to some other X-Men podcast to bother with the other 64). But first, the guys discuss Joe's recent Emmy win, current news events and how they relate to the X-Men, and Rupert Wyatt being announced as the "Gambit" director (mostly just an excuse to swoon over Channing Tatum, yet again). Plus, the guys make a pitch to Vice President Joe Biden that, quite frankly, he would be a fool to turn down. What a pleasure talking to the man behind great satire and action like American Flagg, Time 2, The Shadow, The Blackhawks, and Cody Starbuck .You'll hear about his current projects like BITE CLUB, BLADE, GUY GARDNER, JLA CLASSIFIED, along with a look back at his work on STAR WARS , BLACK KISS, AMERICAN CENTURY , his television work on THE FLASH, VIPER, and MUTANT X .We'll discuss Chaykin's view of Televison, from the shows he loves to what Hollywood is looking for from writers these days.
