In this week's episode of The Intercept Briefing, we examine the case of Mohsen Mahdawi, a Palestinian student whose decadelong journey toward American citizenship ended not with the oath of allegiance, but in handcuffs. On Monday, the Columbia student arrived at his long-awaited citizenship interview in Vermont. Instead, immigration agents arrested him, and he now faces deportation to the occupied West Bank.Rep. Becca Balint, D-Vt., who represents his district, is outraged and told The Intercept Briefing, “If you'll deny due process from somebody who was in this country with a green card for 10 years, who is somebody who talked about peace and connection between Palestinians and Israelis who was looking to build bridges — if this man is somehow a threat to our society, then we are down a sick path.”Mahdawi spoke to The Intercept the night before his fateful appointment and said he understood the risk he might be facing. He is now the ninth Columbia student targeted for deportation. The Trump administration has revoked or changed over a 1,000 student visas, according to Inside Higher Ed. Mahdawi's case exemplifies how immigration enforcement is being weaponized, says Balint. “ If they're so proud of what they're doing, then show your damn face, then show your ID. Then talk about what grounds you are holding this person. But it's being done in secret, and it is meant to shock and awe and to get the rest of us to remain silent. They have no evidence, they have no details, which is what we're demanding of both Secretary [Marco] Rubio and Secretary [Kristi] Noem."Immigration lawyer Matt Cameron spoke to The Intercept about the broader implications of the administration's agenda and said that this is much bigger than just students and immigrants. “ It's a message to student protesters obviously to start with, but it's a message to all of us that our free speech is a liability,” he warned.Cameron pointed to the case of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident who was illegally deported to El Salvador and is now imprisoned despite no criminal record. The U.S. Supreme Court has ordered the government to facilitate his return, but so far, the administration has resisted. "This is going to be one of the most important cases of our lifetimes,” said Cameron. “ Even for people who don't think they're interested in following immigration issues: This is for all of us. And you know, Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia will be all of us pretty soon here if we don't stay on our rights.” Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Everyone knows that Seattle is Pearl Jam's hometown city, but just like Chicago is a hometown city for Eddie Vedder, so is San Diego. Not just that, but it extends to both Mike McCready and Matt Cameron as well. So any time that the band gets to travel to San Diego, there's no doubt that you're in for a special show. In 2006, that's exactly what happens. The band played with their pants on fire and every song had high octane energy as the hometown crowd was treated to something special. The main story from this show took place at the top of the encore where Ed paid tribute to his former drama teacher, a man named Clayton E. Liggett, who Ed had a theater created in his name. He told the story about finding out the night he passed away during the Mirrorball sessions. After hearing of the news, he went back into the studio and started to strum his guitar with the opening chord of what would become Long Road. We'll talk about how important this moment was when looking back on the history of this band, and we'll also share our own personal stories of how teachers have impacted our lives. There are so many ways we can all connect to Ed, and this story is transcendent due to his vulnerability in sharing that. There are also some big time performances at this show. The first four songs of this show from Oceans to Brain Of J. set the bar incredibly high for the night, and then incredible performances to follow such as Even Flow, You Are, Satan's Bed, Inside Job, Rearviewmirror with a Life Wasted inspired improv, Crown Of Thorns, a big time Alive solo and the debut of Big Wave. We'll spend the episode discussing which 2006 shows best define this era and if this show deserves to be in the conversation. Is this a candidate for the Live On 4 Legs hall of fame? OA1125 - (NOTE: Acting US Attorney for SDNY Danielle Sassoon's resignation letter and DOJ acting deputy Emil Bove's acceptance of that letter were published while we were recording this episode, and hours before the Trump administration was enjoined by a DC federal judge from suspending international aid. The news hose never stops!) For this Rapid Response Friday, we do our best to answer some of your questions about waves hands in the general direction of DC. Why is the media reporting the illegal attempts to fire (among others) the head of the Office of Special Counsel and 17 investigators general like a normal federal HR issue? Did FEMA really just straight-up steal $80 million from New York City's bank account? Is it now legal to bribe foreign companies abroad and act as an unregistered foreign agent at home? Why are we sending Venezuelan asylum seekers with no criminal records or gang affiliations to Guantanamo Bay just weeks after DHS Secretary Kristi Noem promised that it would only be housing the “worst of the worst”? And just where exactly is the “Gulf of America” anyway? These and other questions from the week's news are answered within. Soundgarden emerged as a pioneering force in the Seattle grunge scene, bringing elements of heavy metal and alternative rock into what would come to be known as the Seattle sound. The group originally found lead singer and primary songwriter Chris Cornell singing from behind a drum set where he was the group's percussionist, but it became clear that this would not work well in live concerts, so Cornell switched to vocals and rhythm guitar while turning over percussion work to Matt Cameron. Badmotorfinger, the third studio album, finds the group just before it's breakout into grunge superstardom, an event that would occur with the release of their next album. Taking its name from a spoof on a popular Montrose song, Badmotorfinger sports a strong heavy metal sound, but with tighter songwriting, and a bit of complexity in time signatures and tunings. It would become the band's highest charting album to date, peaking at number 39 on the Billboard 200 chart, and going double platinum by 1996. It was also considered a success by critics, and was nominated in 1992 for a Grammy award for Best Metal Performance. While the album definitely has grunge elements in it, as a whole it may be considered more alternative, heavy metal, or hard rock. The band's development makes this album more difficult to pin down into a single genre, and perhaps this makes for a more interesting listening experience. We hope you enjoy this foray into the roots of the grunge movement as Lynch brings us the album for today's podcast. Rusty CageThe opening track to the album was the third single released, and reflects a longing for freedom and a breaking out of the “rusty cage” that life can be. The guitars are tuned down significantly, giving the riffs a jangling sound. Johnny Cash would cover it a few years later, turning the song into a country anthem. OutshinedThis track combines themes of self-doubt and internal struggle with appearances of external success and confidence, creating a clash within the singer. Cornell creates depth and passion through his vocals. “Show me the power, child. I'd like to say that I'm down on my knees today.”Jesus Christ PoseUnlike many tracks, this first single released from the album is credited to all four band members. The lyrics are a rant against the hypocrisy of religious leaders who turn belief into a means of acquiring power. This track is an example of a Soundgarden song that is more metal than grunge at this point.Slaves & BulldozersThis song is often described as “doom metal,” and utilizes drop-tuned guitars to create a slow burn, darker sound. The lyrics encourage the listener to consider how their situation may be turning them into either an obedient slave or a nihilistic bulldozer. It was the last song Soundgarden played live before Chris Cornell's death in 2017. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “The Cosby Show”This staple of 80's sitcom had their final episode and went off the air in April 1992. STAFF PICKS:I Want to Touch You by Catherine WheelWayne kicks off the staff picks with the Manchester sound. This post-psychedelic song deals with the raw emotions of a shy guy who is infatuated with a particular woman. “It would really make my day if you'd only move away, 'cause I'm scared that if you stay, I'll want to touch you.” Just Take My Heart by Mr. BigRob brings us a power ballad that peaked at number 16. It was the fourth single from the second album by Mr. Big entitled “Lean Into It.” The song features some excellent finger picking on an electric guitar toned down to an almost acoustic consistency. Eric Martin is the lead singer and co-writer of the song.Cold Day in Hell by Gary MooreBruce features a guitar virtuoso from Northern Ireland. Gary Moore got his start in an Irish band called Skid Row in the late 1960's but is better known as a member of Thin Lizzy. This lead-off track to his ninth solo studio album called “After Hours” is a straightforward announcement that the man and his lover would never be getting back together. Silent Lucidity by QueensrycheLynch closes out the staff picks with beautiful and epic piece off the Empire album. Chris DeGarmo, guitarist and primary songwriter for the group, was inspired to write this song after reading a book about lucid dreams. The first iteration of the song was acoustic guitar and vocals only, and instrumentation was added later. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:The Simpsons by Danny GattonA rock/blues guitar cover of the main theme of “The Simpsons” takes us out for today's session. This week's episode takes us back to the Yield tour to cover Pearl Jam's first headlining arena gig in Minnesota. With only a few shows under their belt in the early onset of the Matt Cameron era, the band was starting to figure out their stride with the new, then temporary, drummer. The crowd was red hot for every performance and every hiccup within this set, which led to some surprised reactions from Ed, who didn't have the show in mind as a sleeper show. The big story coming out of this show stemmed from a callback to something that The Who did in their live shows. After years of playing My Generation ad nauseum, they turned the song into a very riffy, blues influenced jam. This is something that Ed, a lifelong Who fan, picked up on and started to utilize during Porch in a similar fashion back around the mid-2000's. This was the first instance where they dabbled in it. We'll talk about the history of both My Generation blues and the slow/riffy Porch intros and how it became a staple for them much later in their live career. We'll also dig into great performances of Brain Of J., Faithfull, Even Flow, Black and very early versions of Pilate and All Those Yesterdays which were rarely played that year. Joining us for this episode is our longtime friend Kirk Walton who we like to call Mr. Minnesota. He'll share his story about the show which included a trip to Mervyn's of California, and we'll also get to chat about the misery that Minnesota sports fans endure. We should've mentioned that Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament were also previously in Mother Love Bone, and that Soundgarden's Matt Cameron was also in Temple Of The Dog.

The Dark Matter tour is now underway! As Pearl Jam took the stage this past weekend for two shows in Vancouver, we now know how the songs on the brand new record sound like, and know a little of how they'll be structured live. The tour will be addressed at the top of the show, but for more, tap into our reaction episodes over on our Patreon! The show we're covering in this episode preps us for next week's show in Sacramento as we'll breakdown Pearl Jam's show there from 1998. There is a notable running storyline in this show that will dominate the talking points. Back in 1998, Pearl Jam had invited legacy rock acts such as Iggy Pop, Cheap Trick and Frank Black to support them as their openers. Legendary punk band X took the stage at this show with the entire band watching them from the side stage. Eddie Vedder even introduced them onto the stage. While they were excited to witness the renowned Los Angeles band, it did not translate to the crowd in a way that satisfied Ed. He keeps a grudge with him the entire night featuring moments where he'd shout 'fuck you' and 'you really pissed me off tonight' in order to get his aggression out. A lot of the discussion will stem from the middle of the set where a lackluster demeanor was present, but there are also great moments here to address such as Spin The Black Circle to open the show, a firey Go to end the main set, Matt Cameron's first performance of In My Tree, and a version of Corduroy dubbed "slideuroy" that Javier will dig into featuring Mike using a slide pick on the song. It's tour time! Pearl Jam is about to get back on the road for the first leg of their Dark Matter tour on the west coast, and we're continuing to focus on past shows from the locations that they'll be playing in May. This episode takes us to Portland, Oregon from the 2000 Binaural tour. The back half of the tour that year featured some of the best shows that Pearl Jam has ever played starting with their 10th anniversary show in Vegas and ending on an instant classic to end the tour in Seattle. This show in Portland checks every single box from what you want of that era - Matt Cameron's absolute dominance of the drum kit, Ed's fierce and ear shattering vocals and Mike McCready's spacy, yet piercing solos from the left side. The overall theme for this show was how the band started off on fire and almost never took the foot off the pedal. A six song kick off of Sometimes, Grievance, Corduroy, Go, Hail, Hail and Dissident made a statement and set the expectations immediately. We'll get into other massive moments such as a phenomenal stretch featuring Untitled, MFC and Habit in a row, a different take on the Man Trilogy now featuring a feminine presence, but most importantly of all, we get an improv before closing out encore 1 with Rearviewmirror that is the absolute stand out from this show. Javier is back and will break down Stone's solo on MFC and a little bit of how Ed had a great show on the axe specifically highlighting a banger version of Habit. But most importantly, we take listener questions about the upcoming Dark Matter tour and some of your expectations and inquiries of how it will all go down! Ahead of the Panthers clash at Bathurst, Penrith CEO Matt Cameron joined Andrew Moore and the team to talk about a range of issues and topics. He spoke about the relationship Penrith has with Bathurst and their hope to bring another game next year to the Western Regions alongside the Bathurst game. He also spoke about James Fisher-Harris's move to the Warriors, and how they had too much respect for James to ask the Warriors for compensation.
Jason and Paul welcome Richard Stuverud to the show to discuss all things music in his world from his past solo records to his upcoming solo record, playing music with his son, and honoring his late father. Perhaps you're like Listener Thomas S, who found this decision absolutely nuts. If so, you're in luck, because in this episode of OA, Thomas throws every argument at actual lawyer Matt Cameron for why this decision sucked. How does the actual lawyer feel? Joe Wong is a LA based musician, film and tv composer, producer, and podcaster. His newest record, Mere Survival, is a lush orchestral psychedelic pop odyssey laden with timeless song structure and stacked with the heaviest of heavy hitting guest musicians (Mary Timony, Nate Mendel, Money Mark, Jim Keltner and Matt Cameron, to name of few). Joe (Wong) shares the motivation behind this realistic, yet despair rich record, and how this stage in his career naturally led to its completion. The Joe's discuss the absurdity of the all-star cast of contributors and why Joe Wong sees making a record as an innately social experience. The two exchange their gleaned wisdom they've absorbed from Buzz Osborne, Joe (Wong) tells us why he's getting his podcast The Trap Set up and running again and we hear his plans for upcoming performances of Mere Survival. As usual, we hear a few tunes and soak up the vibrations. Joe Wong Mere Survival Episode supported by Distrokid Episode supported by Izotope

Hello and welcome to the Talkhouse Podcast, I'm Josh Modell. On this week's episode we've got a pair of friends who, as you'll hear, have provided emotional support and advice to each other throughout interesting, winding careers over the past couple of decades; Mary Timony and Joe Wong. Timony is probably best known as the leader of the ‘90s indie-rock band Helium, but her catalog goes far beyond it. Prior to Helium, Timony came up in the DC punk scene as part of the band Autoclave, and after she's been part of Wild Flag with members of Sleater-Kinney, fronted a band called Ex Hex, and released records under her own name. That's mostly why we're here today, because Timony is about to release her first solo record in 15 years, and it's fantastic. It's called Untame the Tiger, and it picks up on some of the psych elements that Timony has wrangled in the past—and even includes a guest appearance by the former drummer of Fairport Convention, Dave Mattacks, as you'll hear in this chat. Untame the Tiger was also produced in part by today's other guest, Joe Wong. It comes out February 23, but check out the song “Dominoes” right here. As I mentioned, today's other guest is Joe Wong, who grew up in Milwaukee and played in indie-rock bands before finding his creative path in two amazing ways: as a composer for TV and film and as a podcast host. He's written music for the likes of Russian Doll and Master of None, and he helms the popular podcast The Trap Set, which originated as a way to spotlight his favorite drummers, but has since expanded into deep and incredible conversations with all kinds of creative folks. But a few years back, partly at the urging of his friend Mary Timony, Wong began writing songs for himself rather than for other people's scores. He just released his second album, Mere Survival, and while it still has late-'60s big-pop vibes, it gets even bigger and weirder than his first. It features not only Timony, but also Pearl Jam's Matt Cameron, among other guests. Check out the title track from Mere Survival right here. This conversation took place shortly after two big release shows for Mere Survival for which Wong gathered a 20-piece band, so you'll hear a bit about that, as well as some thoughts on songwriting itself. Wong and Timony also get deep on how their parents' illnesses brought them together, about self-sabotage and perfectionism, and much more. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Mary TImony and Joe Wong for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the great written pieces at Talkhouse.com. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

This episode is manhandled by a recurring theme in which Pearl Jam has never attempted prior or since. On a 2006 night in Prague following a very memorable series of shows in Italy, the band balanced a main set sprint with a first encore where five songs all connected. As we are used to sometimes seeing the songs Better Man, Nothingman and Leatherman used together in what has been dubbed "The Man Trilogy", on this night the trilogy expanded it's tribe by adding in Dead Man and Man Of The Hour into what we dub as The Man Pentology. This is a one off instance which was never repeated in this group of five again, and we're excited to share it with you because it's things like this that seem to get forgotten about over time. Especially at a show that was not played in America. As mentioned, this is one of the fastest main sets you'll ever witness from the modern era clocking in at an hour and 8 minutes. When sets tend to trail on the faster side, that's all thanks to Matt Cameron's furious pace that he brought to the table during shows in this era. Songs like Sad, Daughter and Marker In The Sand were all revved up more than usual, and even the songs that already have that identity such as Last Exit, Whipping and Animal were all amped up a little more than usual. We'll work quick through this set, but not before taking a moment to feature some of our favorite songs, including a few Filthy Fills tossed in there. Check out this week's Gear Guru segments with Javier where he'll break down a phaser that McCready uses on Life Wasted, to talking about a pedal no longer featured on Stone's board that was implemented in this version of Insignificance. It's Groundhog Day... again! For the fifth time in seven episodes (and it'll be sixth in eight next week before getting to some 2023 shows) we're celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Vs. tour. The tour certainly had it's ups and downs, and while the last two episodes could be considered some of the down moments, this second night in Vegas is the follow up to a show that's pound for pound one of the best on this tour. The first night in Vegas featured a reunion of Green River, and the moment where Jeff and Stone joined Mark Arm and Steve Turner for the first time since 1987 seemed to re-energize the band. As they only had two more dates before ending the tour on a triple header back home in Seattle, you're able to tell that a little bit of the weight was lifted off their backs. It had been a year of growing pains, but on most nights they were able to put aside their struggle with fame to spend 90 minutes giving the crowd a show to remember. All of the positive energy was radiant on stage at this show with Jeff doing his signature zips and leaps across the stage and Ed's voice having that trademark ferocity for the era. We'll dig deep into songs like Go, Glorified G, Daughter, Garden, Blood, Porch and others that were the highlights from this night. We'll also react to the news announced by Matt Cameron that the new album is mixed and ready, and the Gear Guru segments this week will dig into an intro for Daughter that had a very 80s, Tears For Fears or Police sound to it, and will get into Mike's experimental, Sonic Youth inspired sound on the Porch solo. We've done extensive coverage of the 2003 Riot Act tour celebrating the 20th anniversary this year. Now it's time to celebrate the anniversary of another major tour in Pearl Jam history - 1998! We kick off a 3-episode Yield tour stretch with an outdoor festival show that took place in Barrie, right outside of Toronto. With Cheap Trick as the supporting act on tour at this time, there are multiple instances where the band gives a subtle nod to their rock heroes, including Mike using Rick Nielson's guitar for State Of Love And Trust. Our Patron Alex Sink joins us for this episode to tell his story of what went down that day. For a bootleg that had a tough time capturing the identity of the show and with no visual aides available, Alex is able to take us back to what that scene was like. A rowdy crowd of over 30,000 created dirt clouds and mud as the mosh pits were in full force on this one. And the band was clearly in a good mood after watching Cheap Trick on the side stage. Ed makes multiple mentions of how great this crowd was, and even addressed some of the craziest fans he had ever seen in the parking lot during an extended version of Leatherman. We also have the world debut of the Do The Evolution music video that happens at this show with the band performing while the images are shown on a screen behind them. If you love Matt Cameron, this may be the episode for you! Get ready for five moments that we've dubbed the 'filthy fills' that will be featured throughout this show! Our Gear Guru segments will featured Javier talking about the lack of overdrive pedal from this tour and how Mike would make adjustments on Even Flow and Yellow Ledbetter, and he'll also discuss Mike's using Rick Nielson's guitar during State Of Love And Trust. Alpine Valley has been a staple of the Pearl Jam touring route going all the way back to Lollapalooza in 1992. In the seven instances in which they've played there, there's no lack of unforgettable shows and unforgettable moments. A few of the shows even have monikers that they go by such as PJ20, when they played there for their 20th anniversary, and the Ice Bowl in 2000 where they played a full show in freezing cold weather. In this episode, we're gonna go back to 25 years ago where they played their first headlining gig in East Troy. To help us tell the story, we've enlisted our Patron Aaron Redmon who requested this show. This was very early in Matt Cameron's tenure with the band, and there are some things that we'll hear out of Matt that show that he was still getting adjusted to being on tour with them. Songs like Do The Evolution and Brain Of J feature a harder edge than we're accustomed to today. This show will feature technical difficulties, botched lyrics and early indications that certain songs were ready to become massive crowd friendly moments. The two big moments to look out for are Black with a highly intense We Belong Together tag and Alive with an improv within the solo. With Alpine Valley being such a historic venue, we asked you to share your favorite moments from seeing shows there, which we'll share during our question of the week segment. And our Gear Guru segments this week will feature Mike's clean guitar sound on Even Flow, well deserved love for Jeff Ament and a tag of Jimi Hendrix's Machine Gun at the end of Yellow Ledbetter. Ok I know how this sounds but like, it might actually happen. And it all links back to, no shit, Stormy Daniels. Having been a little preoccupied lately, I'm very lucky to have expert Matt Cameron on to catch me up and explain which of the eleventy billion crimes Trump has committed might actually come with consequences. Eric Leiderman is a producer of NBC's Late Night with Seth Meyers and is the man behind the rotating drummer program which has given drummers of all styles the chance to perform with the 8G band on national American television. The 8G Band is the house band for Late Night with Seth Meyers and the band is led by Fred Armisen (Saturday Night Live, Portlandia, Wednesday). Due to Fred Armisens extremely busy schedule, the 8G band has a roster of all star drummers who take turns performing with the group. Some of the drummers who have played with the 8G Band include Brad Wilk, Chad Smith, Josh Freese, Matt Cameron and many many more monster players. Together, these artists bring a wide range of experience and expertise to the band, and their contributions have helped bring drummers to the national stage on a weekly basis. Eric has a background as a touring drummer and as a TV comedy writer for many years and is full of great information and stories. If you have ever thought about sitting in with the 8G Band, this is a good starting point - Eric gives the info on what is needed and how to get in touch with him. Be sure to tune in to Late Night with Seth Meyers in January 2023 to see Danny Carey, Dan Fang, Maya Stepansky, and Fred Armisen. Enjoy this episode!
You may have recently seen people posting about a disturbing Supreme Court decision (what else is new) with images of how much of the US is within 100 miles of a border, and how federal agents can basically get away with anything in most of the country. What was that about? Was it overblown? Welp. Attorney Matt Cameron is here to tell us no, actually. It was underblown, if anything. Not blown enough. Listen for the full breakdown, including classic Bivens. Before that, Andrew does a quick refresher on pocket pardons and why they... are not a thing.
