Today is the IVAN DEPRUME INTERVIEW EPISODE! WOOOO! Also featuring more retrospective on the 1932 White Zombie film and narratives provided by Rob Zombie, Sean Yseult and Jay Yuenger from old interviews and blogs and books. The fine people at Radish Mattress and I will cover, among other topics: Ivan's upbringing in Brooklyn, his drum heros, and how he fit into the band over the years Rebuilding the engine on the White Zombie van for their early tours The elements of his 1992 drum kit that he still owns and uses in his recent projects How his mother got to America to escape Nazi occupation and death camps in Ukraine and Poland The Boundless Joy album and tour last year His best times in the gym with Rob Zombie His impression of every White Zombie guitarist over the years His view of Sean and Rob's separation and how it led to the splintering of the band's family vibe How he ate on the first European tour after blowing all his per diem money on a bitchin pair of leather pants The scary encounters on the road to places like revolution-wracked Yugoslavia and the Berlin Wall when it was torn down The bogus story Rob made up about why Ivan left White Zombie and the audio of Rob making bullshit up onstage on Phil's first night behind the kit Ivan's views on how to best live life and take care of the people and communities around us My breakdown of Victor Halperin's techniques in the film “White Zombie” and the way the movie made me feel all these years after first seeing it in 1996 An exploration of Jay Yuenger's studio notes on “La Sexorcisto” and “Astro Creep” including the Phaser trick on “Blur the Technicolor” A dip back into Rob Zombie's history starting after his “PeeWee's Playhouse” experience and the indie NYC noise band scene White Zombie was entrenched in at the time. Also his time doing layout and typesetting for little known porno mags A wrap up of Sean Yseult's narrative on her years in the band and the noble modesty she displays by not using it to air any dirty laundry and simply highlight all the fun times and great people she experienced when the band got big. I mean, lots of other people would make an entire book about what it was like in the 80s and 90s if they were involved romantically with Rob Zombie, Dave Wyndorf and Al Jourgensen, right? But instead you get drawings and handwritten sheet music and cool electric basses and homemade costumes and cocktail party themes. And through it all there's plenty of helpful input from our sponsor representative brand officer CEO of Radish Mattress/Bootleg Ayhueasca of Canton, Ohio Inc. We praise and thank them for their partnership, and all heads must bow and each tongue shall confess and every knee shall bend for Radish Mattress. Dave Wyndorf is the lead vocalist and guitarist for American rock band Monster Magnet, a band that helped build the stoner rock genre, and scored big hits in the 90s with the songs 'Space Lord' and 'Negasonic Teenage Warhead'. Their latest album A Better Dystopia is a collection of covers from obscure tracks from the late 60s and early 70s that have made an impression on Dave. His love for this era of music becomes apparent immediately as we talk about Hawkwind and bands that deserve more recognition, art in the internet world, the age of infotainment, the live scene of the 70s, the challenge in covering songs from this era, and a lot more! Enjoy the show :)
When Monster Magnet frontman/songwriter Dave Wyndorf was stuck in pandemic lockdown, he decided the best thing to do was keep busy, and he and his bandmates holed up in the studio and got to work on a new album. Monster Magnet have always stuck out like a sore thumb in the musical landscape in the most beautiful way, from their 1991 debut 'Spine of God', to seismic releases like 1995's 'Dopes to Infinity' and 1998's 'Powertrip,' which contained their hit single 'Spacelord.' For their latest, the group decided to revisit their psychedelic and proto-metal roots, by crafting their first full length album of covers. The resulting album, 'A Better Dystopia,' (click here for my review) eschews well-known anthems in exchange for underrated, forgotten tracks from the late 60's and early 70's, including covers of tunes by bands including Hawkwind, Poo-bah, The Pretty Things, Pentagram and more. In today's podcast episode, Dave Wyndorf discusses the inspirations behind the new album, how he was able to tie it thematically to the COVID-19 pandemic, how the group embrace their outsider status, the state of the music industry and our current political landscape, what the band has in store as society slowly creeps back to some sense of normalcy, and much more. This is the 3rd interview I've done with Wyndorf, and he continues to be one of the sharpest and shrewdest minds in the business, and it's always fascinating to hear his take on things. So check out the interview and stick around afterwards when I’ll be playing 'Learning to Die', a song off the new album. Click here to listen to the interview via Apple Podcasts and click here to listen via Spotify, or listen via the Anchor embed or other podcast platforms at the bottom of this post. Isaak Blooming Oaktree is a beast of a bass player and a cool-handed rhythm-guitar player to boot. Today our esteemed musical colleague and friend makes his on-air debut with not one, but TWO class acts: Joni Mitchell plucks on our heart strings with her suspended chords lining up like voters on their way to a both. The tension is heartbreaking. Johnny Marr, the eclectic pluck-meister from the new wave sensation The Smiths, was the perfect foundation to Morrissey's crooney ramblings, during a simpler time, when politics came on a distant second place. Meanwhile, from across the polder, Olle melts your brain with some pill-popping, mind-expanding space rock courtesy of Dave Wyndorf and his magnetized gang of sofa-lying monsters! Despite writing lyrics about comic books, “70s nipples,” humping volcanoes, and cashing Satan’s checks with his dick in his hand, Monster Magnet frontman Dave Wyndorf has always really been singing about relationships. He breaks down the more ridiculous moments of his career, burying themes of love and heartbreak underneath absurd lyrics, finding porn in the woods as a kid, and why it’s hard to simultaneously create inspired art and make a romantic partnership work.

As the frontman for Monster Magnet, Dave Wyndorf was a stoner rock pioneer, who propelled the group from cult status to hedonistic rock stars thank to their 1998 album Powertrip, fueled by their hit single Spacelord. In today's podcast episode, Dave Wyndorf discusses the band's new, stripped down album Mindf**ker, which tones down the group's psychedelic leanings in favor of proto-punk fueled angst. In addition, the whip-smart rocker talks about how his musical influences shaped the album, how its hard to make a "good times, rock-for-rock's sake" album in today's information overload era, what he thinks about our current political landscape, and much more in this lively interview. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/slis/support

Dave Wyndorf of Monster Magnet guests this week. We talk about the rise and fall of Monster Magnet, from having a super radio hit to hardly selling any albums, the way the industry monetizes artists and thereby lessens the value of art, getting older and realizing what it means to have longevity, and the pitfalls of rock and roll in general. His candid perspective is unique and Dave does not mince words for those in power. We also discuss last week's Motorhead show in Austin, where Chuck witnessed first-hand the illness that caused Lemmy's shortened performance. We discuss the crowd reaction while giving him the respect he deserves. Is this the beginning of the end for one of rock's most important icons? No matter what we hope to have him around for many more years, but it might be time to set up a residency or something. Songs:Monster Magnet - Watch Me FadeMotorhead - Till the End
