In this episode of the Ducks Unlimited Podcast, host Katie Burke talks with John Southworth, president of the Minnesota Decoy Collectors Association, to explore the fascinating world of waterfowl decoys. John shares how his passion for decoys began as a child, sparked by his dad bringing home treasures from antique shops and yard sales. Though he started waterfowl hunting years later, it wasn't until he attended his first Minnesota Decoy Collectors Show that his love for decoy collecting truly took flight. Now, as president of the association, John has dedicated his life to collecting, and researching these pieces of waterfowling history. Tune in for a heartfelt discussion about the artistry, tradition, and community surrounding decoy collecting.Listen now: www.ducks.org/DUPodcastSend feedback: DUPodcast@ducks.org

Andrew Rucklidge is an award-winning Canadian visual artist, whose paintings have shown all over the world, and can be found in collections from Toronto, to London, to Dharemshala, India. Andrew is also a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, who has played in several bands, including Farmer in the City (Martin Tielli), John Southworth, The New Romantic Portal, The Linoleum Falcon, Cactus Club, and—currently—Dopamine Dream.  He also records as a solo artist under the name Bobbe Ruck. This conversation delves into the nuanced and wondrous overlap between the worlds of music and art: creating layered and textured sounds with a "painterly" approach, or conjuring fantastical abstracts inspired by albums played on repeat. You'll also learn the definition of "Gnome Rock", why an "eggy bridge" breaks the rules, and how making your own paint from scratch is like working with a Moog synthesizer.  Learn more about Andrew at andrewrucklidge.com Stream or download Bobbe Ruck: https://ffm.to/bobberuck Get a dose of Dopamine Dream at dopaminedreamband.com THE MUSIC BUDDY SESSION:"Too Little To Lose", by Andrew RucklidgePerformed by Andrew Rucklidge, Tim Vesely, and Jane GowanRecorded by Tim Vesely and Jane Gowan; Mixed by Tim VeselyMusic samples in this episode:"All County Holdings" - Bobbe Ruck (All County Holdings, 2020)"Unknown" - Dopamine Dream (Unknown, 2023)"Banner G" -  Bobbe Ruck (All County Holdings, 2020)"Astro Jet" -  Bobbe Ruck (All County Holdings, 2020)"Someone's Looking At You" - The Boomtown Rats (The Fine Art of Surfacing, 1979)"Message to a Friend" -  Bobbe Ruck (All County Holdings, 2020)Support the showA Morning Run Productions ProjectMusic Buddy is nomated for a 2023 Canadian Podcast Award for "Outstanding Music Series", and "Outstanding Main Title Theme Music for a Series". Rediscussion of eclipsing binaries Paper XI ZZ Ursae Majoris, a solar-type system showing total eclipses and a radius discrepancy by John Southworth. on Monday 10 October ZZ UMa is a detached eclipsing binary with an orbital period of 2.299 d that shows total eclipses and starspot activity. We used five sectors of light curves from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and two published sets of radial velocities to establish the properties of the system to high precision. The primary star has a mass of 1.135 +/- 0.009 Msun and a radius of 1.437 +/- 0.007 Rsun, whilst the secondary component has a mass of 0.965 +/- 0.005 Msun and a radius of 1.075 +/- 0.005 Rsun. The properties of the primary star agree with theoretical predictions for a slightly super-solar metallicity and an age of 5.5 Gyr. The properties of the secondary star disagree with these and all other model predictions: whilst the luminosity is in good agreement with models the radius is too large and the temperature is too low. These are the defining characteristics of the radius discrepancy which has been known for 40 years but remains an active area of research. Starspot activity is evident in the out-of-eclipse portions of the light curve, in systematic changes in the eclipse depths, and in emission at the Ca H and K lines in a medium-resolution spectrum of the system. Over the course of the TESS observations the light and surface brightness ratios between the stars change linearly by 20% and 14%, respectively, but the geometric parameters do not. Studies of objects showing spot activity should account for this by using observations over long time periods where possible, and by concentrating on totally-eclipsing systems whose light curves allow more robust measurements of the physical properties of the system. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.10384v2

VLT, GROND and Danish Telescope observations of transits in the TRAPPIST-1 system by John Southworth et al. on Thursday 22 September TRAPPIST-1 is an ultra-cool dwarf that hosts seven known transiting planets. We present photometry of the system obtained using three telescopes at ESO La Silla (the Danish 1.54-m telescope and the 2.2-m MPI telescope) and Paranal (Unit Telescope 1 of the Very Large Telescope). We obtained 18 light curves from the Danish telescope, eight from the 2.2-m and four from the VLT. From these we measure 25 times of mid-transit for four of the planets (b, c, f, g). These light curves and times of mid-transit will be useful in determining the masses and radii of the planets, which show variations in their transit times due to gravitational interactions. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2207.05874v2

How can you find objects that are hard to see in the depths of space? There is plenty of gas in a galaxy, but trying to see a cloud amongst all those starts is not easy. The further back in time you look in the history of the universe, the colder and darker it gets. How do you figure out the structure of the earliest galaxies and their cold gas? A black hole roaming across a galaxy sounds like bad sci fi horror, but may have been found. How can you spot a black hole without any frame of reference? Detecting a roaming black hole is tricky but not impossible. Kieran A. Cleary, Jowita Borowska, Patrick C. Breysse, Morgan Catha, Dongwoo T. Chung, Sarah E. Past ideas have a new sound in these strange days, and it's nice to slow down and listen. But recently a friend asked me what my favorite songs of this year were (after I said I wouldn't give a year-end list of albums), so I went through all the BiH mixes from this year and picked my favorite songs. Here they are, in absolutely no particular order. This was an interesting year from music. It was not dominated by 'the great album', though there were some great EPs (Doss, Ana Caprix, Diarrhea Planet)). Mostly, this was a great year for songs. I had a few albums I got into this year (Real Estate, Haerts, Fucked Up, Temples...I am not counting the new Panda Bear because officially it hasn't come out yet, and until I have the vinyl it doesn't count), but really I am so wrapped up in making these mixes that I paid more attention to the great songs everyone was putting out rather than the handful of great albums that hit the shelves. But really, if you are only going to listen to 1 BiH mix per year, then this is the one for 2014. I have never produced a year-end mix before but I think this is something I'll start doing from now on. All of these songs have appeared on BiH mixes previously, so for the few avid listeners out there, you'll recognize all of this. That's okay. This should be a fun mix for all. I definitely noticed that I have  given greater weight to music that came out later in the year, and that's possibly because of how I went about accumulating music in the 2nd half of the year (and ended up with a better selection), or maybe it's just because I already overplayed my favorites from earlier in the year. At any rate, here they are in honestly no particular order (or even any particular number of songs; I only decided to pick 1 hours' worth of my favorites from the last 12 months...we ended up with a 'top 15' mix). I only wanted to make a mix that included my favorites and actually had some decent flow. Enjoy! And Happy New Year... See you in 2015.BiH Favoritest of the Year: 2014 feat. (in order for once): John Southworth, Moodoid, Desert Stars, Breakfast in Fur, Shocking Pinks, Temples, Sucre, Suburban Living, Doss (remixed by Ana Caprix), Rubblebucket (remixed by Body Language), Pepa Knight, Milo Greene, Morning Harvey, Betty Who, Ana Caprix

41: my age. And I am happy to say also nerdily commemorated with one of the best mixes I've produced in a while. There is some really amazing music on this one. And dare I say, it has mad flow. It makes me feel how much I love music, and not just love some of it and like the rest (because really I do like almost all of it). That's saying a lot. It's one thing to love the sculpture in the out-of-place park on Manhattan's Upper East Side somewhere around Central Park & 115th, but another thing entirely to just love art. This is yet another relatively short one; it is only 42.5 minutes long. But I guess, I figure, why bother making them any particular length? I never have the opportunity to listen to one from start to finish without bookends ever.  I doubt anyone does. So now I have a new standard: make these mixes great without regard for duration. Which neither raises nor lowers the bar, but only changes its position.BiH 41 feat. CC33, Fink, Hebinomichi, John Southworth (one of the best songs this year), X priest X, Paperwhite, Jamie N. Commons, Caribou, Ballet School, Jaako Eino Kalevi, and this one absolutely amazing track that is a crazy mash up of Biggie Smalls, Louis Armstrong, Kwami Liv, and more by I have no idea who (Baby Duka).
