Interview with singer songwriter, and artist Kelly Foley!   Louder Than You Think: A Lo-Fi History of Gary Young & Pavement, the original motion picture soundtrack from the 2023 documentary film, has been confirmed for release via digital outlets, Special Edition CD and black and colored vinyl editions in early 2026 on Independent Project Records. The first single from the soundtrack, “Please Be Happy (For Us),” from Gary Young & Pavement is out today and is available here. Proudly resistant to genres and conventions, the Louder Than You Think soundtrack tells the story of Gary Young, a true original in life and behind the drum kit, who, when he was approaching the ripe old age of 40, joined twenty-somethings Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg (Spiral Stairs) to become the original drummer, as well as producer, for soon-to-be indie royalty Pavement. More than just a soundtrack, the release features rare and never-before-heard tracks from the underappreciated Stockton music scene of the ‘80s and ‘90s, including bands like Fall of Christianity (the Stockton rebels that struck a chord with a teenage Spiral Stairs), CRLLL, The Authorities, Gary Young's Hospital, and Hot Spit Dancers. The album also includes tracks scored for the film from Edward W. Dahl (Jodorowsky's Dune) and Noah Georgeson (Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart, Cate Le Bon). “Louder Than You Think is the story of original Pavement drummer Gary Young,” said Pavement's Scott Kannberg. “This soundtrack captures the spirit and warped vision that could only come from Gary and the ‘underbelly of California,' Stockton!" Pavement themselves make memorable appearances throughout the record with ultra-rare live tracks, as well as something quite special: born as a ditty improvised by Gary during filming, “Please Be Happy (For Us)” turned into something rather special after his old friend Scott ‘Spiral Stairs' Kannberg created a suitably trippy musical track (spiced with some Stephen Malkmus feedback yowls). On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got two women whose singing styles are similar in that they're both absolutely singular, unmistakable, and wonderfully out of step—just don't call it spoken-word. It's Florence Shaw of Dry Cleaning and Sue Tompkins of Life Without Buildings. As you'll hear in this chat, Dry Cleaning sort of fell together in London around 2017, when the three instrumentalists approached their friend Florence Shaw to add some vocals to the music they had been writing. It turned out that Shaw's approach—speaking dense, clearly crafted but never obvious words—slotted in perfectly with the sort of nervous-yet-precise songs they had been working on. By 2020, Dry Cleaning had signed with the venerated 4AD label and the next year released a debut album, New Long Leg, that earned comparisons to post-punk greats like Siouxsie and Sonic Youth. For their third studio album, Secret Love, Dry Cleaning worked with producer-slash-musician Cate Le Bon, and they stretched out a bit, mellowing the sharp corners a bit while Shaw experiments more with vocal melody than before. Another person that eagle-eared listeners have compared Florence Shaw to is Sue Tompkins of the legendary, kinda-lost Scottish band Life Without Buildings. Life Without Buildings only released one album, Any Other City, in their brief three-year run, but it had a focused impact. Shaw remembers hearing the record as a teen. “It blew my mind that you could free yourself from the pressure of making traditional sense in lyrics,” she told the website Hearing Things, before mentioning that she'd love to meet Tompkins one day and thank her. Well, with some recent activity on the Life Without Buildings front—Tompkins contributed vocals to a new Sleaford Mods song, and the band just announced a couple of reunion shows—it seemed like the perfect time to get them together. In this delightful chat, Tompkins and Shaw talk about the similar origins of their respective bands, how genuinely kind the dudes of Sleaford Mods are, and their understandable reticence about the term “spoken word.” They also chatted a bunch about the TV shows Dragons' Den and Eastenders, but we had to trim that in the interest of time. This week we're talking to UK band Dry Cleaning who just released their excellent third album Secret Love via 4AD. We've got all four members with us: vocalist Florence Shaw, guitarist Tom Dowse, bassist Lewis Maynard, and drummer Nick Buxton. We talked about making the album with producer Cate Le Bon and recording at Wilco's Loft Studio in Chicago and at Black Box studios in France's Loire Valley.   Florence tells us about her decision to sing more on Secret Love, and other topics of discussion include: their upcoming North American tour that had to be rescheduled, the Grammy-winning but polarizing artwork for 2022's Stumpwork and the uncanny artwork of the new album, and their first visit to the US which happened days before covid lockdown in 2020. Plus: a surprising amount of talk about food, albums they think everyone should own, and things devolve into chaos when Lewis accidentally knocks his laptop off his coffee table. Producers and multi-instrumentalists Cate Le Bon, from Wales, and Ouri, who was born in French Guiana, joined Marjorie Hache to discuss their new albums and how much – or how little – location shapes their work. Ouri has just moved back to Paris after spending the past decade in Montreal. She recently released the electro acoustic pop gem “Daisy Cutter”. Cate Le Bon has relocated to South Wales after the end of a relationship, though her 7th album, “Michelangelo Dying”, was produced in Hydra, Cardiff and Joshua Tree.

Diese universelle Erfahrung inspirierte die Multi-Grammy-Gewinnerin St. Vincent zu ihrem siebten Album «All Born Screaming». Annie Clark alias St. Vincent war schon immer eine musikalische Wundertüte. Nach ihrem letzten Album «Daddy's Home» , das erstaunlich organisch ausfiel, feiern die Synthesizer auf «All Born Screaming» ein Comeback. Wie so oft geschah vieles in Eigenregie - Clark spielte 11 verschiedene Instrumente auf dieser Platte und produzierte sie erstmals selber - doch auch prominente Kolleg:innen wie Cate Le Bon, Dave Grohl oder Josh Freese finden sich auf Album Nummer sieben. Dass sie einmal ein Album mit diesem Titel schreiben will, wusste St. Vincent schon, seit sie 23 ist, wie sie kürzlich zum Rolling Stone Magazin sagte. Das Warten hat sich gelohnt.

CMAT is the stage name/alter ego of Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, who's already hit it pretty big in her native Ireland with funny, frank, and flamboyant songs about break-ups and time travel and everything in between, I guess you might say. She was recently nominated for a BRIT Award for Best International Artist—she wore a jaw-dropping dress to the ceremony—and her second album, Crazymad, For Me went to number one in her home country as well. Now she's ready to take on the States a bit, to see if her music—queer-friendly, over-the-top pop—can make as big a splash here. John Grant is a tough guy to explain: On the surface, his music can sound like party-friendly electro-pop, but the themes and lyrics run deep and often pretty intense. Grant started out in the Denver band The Czars, but it wasn't until he spread his wings as a solo artist—starting with 2010's Queen of Denmark, which he made with help from members of the band Midlake—that he really found his unique voice. Since then it's been a series of fascinating records with a series of fascinating collaborators, including Cate Le Bon, who produced his 2021 album Boy From Michigan. Grant just announced the release of his sixth album, The Art of The Lie. It comes out in June, and it promises a no-punches-pulled look at America in 2024, yet with some funk to help ease the medicine. For his 11th studio album, Devendra Banhart turned to the whimsical Welsh artist and producer Cate Le Bon — who also happens to have produced Wilco's latest album Evicted — as both artists explore new territory on their LPs. Devendra expanded his sound on Flying Wig with bold synth-strokes and pristine production, keeping his ears on his vocals as you'll notice on “Nun.”
