Milkie is the moniker of songwriter and front woman Millie Phipps, and also the name of her four-piece avant-pop band currently making waves in their hometown of Bristol. Early obsessions with the Beatles' White Album and Serge Gainsbourg guaranteed Millie's early forays into songwriting were somewhat unusual, and she's been writing idiosyncratic pop songs ever since. As a band, Milkie are hard to describe yet distinctively themselves. They're a guitar band, except sometimes they don't play any guitars. They're a synth band but sometimes they'll unplug everything and sit on the floor. Millie's lyrics are the thread that ties it all together. Whether it be grappling with sadness and boredom in equal measure at a family funeral, or daydreaming behind a desk in a miserable office job, she tells everyday stories with a poetic sense of defiance, despair, and a healthy dose of sarcasm. Milkie formed in early 2023, not long before Millie left her grown-up job as a university principal, fed up and yearning to make music again. Spring 2024 has seen Milkie in the studio recording their debut album (due late 2024), produced by guitarist Benjamin Johnson and mixed by TJ Allen (Bat for Lashes, Anna Calvi). For fans of Pulp, Broadcast and Cate Le Bon.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two songwriters whose music bursts with personality, but in oddly different ways: CMAT and John Grant. CMAT is the stage name/alter ego of Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, who's already hit it pretty big in her native Ireland with funny, frank, and flamboyant songs about break-ups and time travel and everything in between, I guess you might say. She was recently nominated for a BRIT Award for Best International Artist—she wore a jaw-dropping dress to the ceremony—and her second album, Crazymad, For Me went to number one in her home country as well. Now she's ready to take on the States a bit, to see if her music—queer-friendly, over-the-top pop—can make as big a splash here. Check out “Where are Your Kids Tonight,” which features today's other guest John Grant, and catch CMAT on tour in the US right now. Dates are at cmatbaby.com. John Grant is a tough guy to explain: On the surface, his music can sound like party-friendly electro-pop, but the themes and lyrics run deep and often pretty intense. Grant started out in the Denver band The Czars, but it wasn't until he spread his wings as a solo artist—starting with 2010's Queen of Denmark, which he made with help from members of the band Midlake—that he really found his unique voice. Since then it's been a series of fascinating records with a series of fascinating collaborators, including Cate Le Bon, who produced his 2021 album Boy From Michigan. Grant just announced the release of his sixth album, The Art of The Lie. It comes out in June, and it promises a no-punches-pulled look at America in 2024, yet with some funk to help ease the medicine. Check out the song “It's a Bitch” right here, and you can pre-order the whole record at johngrantmusic.com. In this conversation, Grant and CMAT have pretty dissimilar demeanors—she's brash, he's a more quiet sort of intense—but it works: Clearly these two are fans of each other's work, as you'll see, and they have a great chat about language, the ugliness of social media—especially for queer and/or female artists—and CMAT's ass crack, which was “pixelated by the Daily Mail.” Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to John Grant and CMAT for chatting. Emily chats with Indianna Hale about her new album, Yesterday's Glitter, which is out now on Perpetual Doom. Indianna's co-producer Jason Cirimele also joins in on the chat and the two discuss their collaboration on this record, as well as their many additional musical projects. ------ Yesterday's Glitter, a new record from San Francisco's Indianna Hale features indie rock in the vein of Cate Le Bon, Faye Webster, and Cass McCombs and draws from 1950s torch-pop icons like Patsy Cline, the songs on Yesterday's Glitter come wrapped in A.M.-era gauze. It's classic Indianna Hale —the perfect fusion of Marty Robbins and Liz Phair you never knew you needed. The twelve tracks on Yesterday's Glitter resonate with vintage timbre but they also cut with a twenty-first century urgency. Lead Single “I Can't Talk To You” lightly teases a lover for being too self centered, while the melodic bass and chimey guitar weave a counterpoint that almost tells a story of its own. “Nothing you can say to a person with a broken heart,” she sings. “Nothing you can hear when the song in your head's too country.” The album's second single, "Hollow the Words," is sonically peppy and lilting, but finds clouds behind its silver lining. "It was tragically beautiful being with you," Hale sings. She describes the song, inspired by the transience of San Francisco, as "a love song to my friend family." It's emblematic of an album whose rumbling bass and soaring vocals are always pretty, but never simple. Hale describes recording Yesterday's Glitter as a serendipitous process of "electric collaboration" alongside producer and guitar player Jason Cirimele. "While tracking 'The Tighter the Grip,' Jason said 'You know what this song needs?' To which I replied, 'Fuzz bass chords on the chorus!' He said 'That's exactly what I was going to say!'" Over the course of three years, the pair brought in friends and bandmates to create the record's rich sound, including Brian Bethel on bass and Rob Mills (Spooky Mansion) and Cody Rhodes (Geographer, Curls) on drums. On Yesterday's Glitter, mid-century country pop stylings get fitted with fuzzy guitars and filtered through a curtain of dreamy Casio nostalgia to create an album you'll have on repeat.

Devendra expanded his sound on Flying Wig with bold synth-strokes and pristine production, keeping his ears on his vocals as you'll notice on “Nun.”

She's the drummer with Warpaint, but on stage she'll often join Kurt Vile and Cate Le Bon on tour, and while in the studio she's working with The xx and co-producing Courtney Barnett albums. Her skills and curiosity brought her here, but so did her passion for all forms of music. And after hearing this Take 5 you'll understand why. Stella is one of those people you want to bail up at a house party, finding out what they've been listening to or just hearing why that song or that artist cuts so deep. And it's why I asked her to Take 5, and share her labyrinth across five songs. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of fantastic musicians who've been intimately involved with each other's lives and work for the past decade and a half: Cate Le Bon and Huw Evans. Le Bon and Evans each have their own incredible discographies that wouldn't have been the same without the other: They're not in a band together, but each has been a key component of the other's work over the years, starting when they were young and romantically involved. Though they're no longer in a relationship, they're still a huge part of each other's lives. And as you'll hear in this conversation, they like to give each other shit—to the point where while recording I wasn't sure if there was some real hostility happening. (There wasn't.) Evans records under the name H. Hawkline, and this week he'll release his fifth album, Milk For Flowers. It's his most personal and intense yet, though strong emotions remain shrouded in what he once called “strange pop.” Hawkline first found a bit of fame in his and Le Bon's native Wales as a TV presenter, but found his musical voice with a unique blend of classic-sounding songwriting flecked with psychedelic and folk influences. He's worked with Tim Presley of White Fence a bunch; as you'll hear, Presley even played a pivotal non-musical role in the creation of Milk For Flowers. Le Bon produced it, helping to shepherd some intense feelings onto tape. Here's the title track. Evans was there right at the start of Le Bon's career, as you'll hear in this chat: They were living together, and he convinced her to start playing her otherworldly songs outside of their house. He even had to come up with her stage name in order to create a flyer: What may or may not have been a reference to Duran Duran singer Simon Le Bon stuck. The two eventually moved to Los Angeles together and continued making music: Le Bon has amassed an unforgettable discography—you know immediately when you hear her music. (Jeff Tweedy once said he could always tell when it was Le Bon playing guitar, which sounds like a compliment to me.) Le Bon's latest album is last year's Pompeii, a grand, height-of-the-pandemic record that feels like an amazing high-wire act, with saxophone, clarinet, and synthesizers all complementing her voice, guitar, and bass. And it's a matter of some debate, as you'll hear, whether Evans contributed any bass as well. Check out “Remembering Me” from Pompeii. In addition to giving each other grief about song titles and bass parts, the two talk about their history together, about how Le Bon narrowly avoided recording a song that sounded like Jane's Addiction, their different writing styles, and about how the story of Le Bon's first gig was like “a shit indie film.” Enjoy. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a couple of fantastic songwriters from the indie-rock world: Kenny Becker and Doug Martsch. Martsch I'm guessing our listeners will know as the chief songwriter and sole consistent member of Built to Spill, the band that made Boise, Idaho famous. Built to Spill has been an ongoing concern since the early 1990s, releasing a ton of great albums at a fairly leisurely pace, including stone classics like There's Nothing Wrong With Love and Keep it Like a Secret. The Built to Spill lineup has mutated a bunch of times over the years, and that's never been more true than for the genesis of their latest album, When the Wind Forgets Your Name. Writing and recording the album was done with members of the Brazilian band Orua, but the latest live lineup features Martsch alongside a pair of incredibly talented young women from up-and-coming bands: Prism Bitch's Teresa Esguerra and Blood Lemon's Melanie Radford. They bring a new energy to this storied band. Check out the hilarious video for “Fool's Gold” from When the Wind Forgets Your Name. Goon has a much shorter history than Built to Spill, having really started as Kenny Becker's solo project around 2015. Along with some college friends, Becker recorded Goon's dreamy debut album Heaven is Humming. But that lineup was slowly lost to attrition and now, like Martsch, Becker has an entirely new set of players alongside a brand new album, Hour of Green Evening. This new one was recorded in a more bandlike setting, as you'll hear in this chat, and Becker even had some help from Alex Fischel of Spoon. Check out the sweet and tender “Emily Says” from that new record. In this chat, Becker and Martsch talk about recording in a studio versus recording at home; they talk about finding those eureka moments in the studio, Built to Spill's recent cover of a Cate Le Bon song, and getting musical ideas from TikTok. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Doug Martsch and Kenny Becker for chatting. Nabil Ayers has been part of the music scene in many capacities: musician, record-label creator, band manager, music executive, and founder of Seattle's Sonic Boom Records. He is also an author, writing about music and race for the New York Times, Rolling Stone, and many others. Now Ayers has written a new memoir, My Life in the Sunshine: Searching for My Father and Discovering My Family, about his relationship with his father, Black jazz musician Roy Ayers; being a mixed-race person in the United States; and his work in the music industry. While Ayers' famous musician father was rarely present in his life, he still turned out to be a strong influence, showing up in Ayers' love of music and his eclectic career in the music industry. Motivated by his father's absence, Ayers researched and connected with other extended family members and discovered the existence of several half-siblings, as well as a paternal ancestor who was enslaved. Following these new family connections, Nabil meets and befriends the descendant of the plantation owner, which strangely paves the way for him to make meaningful connections with other extended family he never knew existed. In conversation with KEXP's Cheryl Waters, Ayers discusses his drive to understand his roots and redraw the lines that define family and race. Nabil Ayers has written about race and music for The New York Times, NPR, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and GQ. Ayers is the President of Beggars Group US, where he has run campaigns for The National, Big Thief, Grimes, Future Islands and St. Vincent, as well as reissue campaigns including Pixies' album Doolittle which was certified Platinum in 2019. At age 25, Ayers and his business partner opened Seattle's Sonic Boom Records store, which they sold to a longtime customer in 2016. As a drummer Ayers has performed in several bands including The Long Winters and Tommy Stinson. On his own record label, The Control Group/Valley of Search, Ayers has released music by Cate Le Bon, Lykke Li, The Killers, PJ Harvey, Patricia Brennan, and his uncle, the jazz musician Alan Braufman. Ayers lives with his wife in Brooklyn, NY. For more than 25 years, radio DJ and producer Cheryl Waters has been enriching people's lives through artist advocacy and music discovery at the influential Seattle radio station KEXP. A lifelong music lover, Cheryl's career in radio began in 1994 as a volunteer DJ at the station, then-known as KCMU, while she was working as an environmental scientist. Since 2005, Cheryl has been the host of the Midday Show on KEXP, a daily music program where she interviews and champions a wide spectrum of musicians from KEXP's studios in Seattle, WA, as well as at remote broadcasts in cities ranging from New York and Austin to Mexico City and Reykjavik. In her role as the station's Live Performances Manager, Cheryl curates and books more than 300 live sessions at KEXP each year, which have collectively received over 1 billion views worldwide on KEXP's YouTube channel, which has over 2 million subscribers. Originally from Wales, avant-pop artist Cate Le Bon has made her new home in Joshua Tree National Park, in southern California. Lured by the surreal cactus-dotted landscape last year, Le Bon relocated to the desert after finishing her sixth solo album Pompeii.

Musician Cate grew up in rural Carmarthenshire, Wales and she sings in both Welsh and English. After an early tour with Gruff Rhys Of Super Furry Animals and a collaborative role in his Neon Neon project, she went on to release a series of inimitable records as a solo artist. Staking out a sound that's as much influenced by folk and prog as it is by psych and krautrock, she neatly sidesteps the hackneyed sound of most modern indie while still making timeless pop. She recently spent some time in the Lake District, where she divided her time between songwriting and learning how to make solid wood furniture. The music eventually became her new album Reward which is released later this month by Mexican Summer records.
For around a decade now, New Zealand artist Tiny Ruins has been singing stories to us. Across three albums, Hollie Fullbrook has sketched beautiful pictures of the world around her, and taken those tunes on the road. Hollie is the songwriter behind these tales, and these days she spends a lot of time trekking around. Whether it's the US, UK, Europe, or across the pond in Australia, she's built a dedicated live following. But travel has been a big part of her life forever, and has given her plenty of great yarns. With some truly wonderful sounds, this Take 5 takes you from England to Amsterdam, America to New Zealand, and through blustery Wales. Let Tiny Ruins fire up the engine and press play on the car stereo.
