We're a big fan of Clive Barker here in the shed, and we wanted to talk about some of his work that has made the silver screen that ISN'T Hellraiser, because we're also a big fan of the roads less travelled. So we've got two Barker works under the microscope in our Double Feature, we look at a book for the first time as an Easily Available Horror, and we respectfully disagree about computer games in the News segment. Easily Available Horror: Kill Creek by Scott Thomas, Inkshares. Also - We totally neglected to give any links or spell her name, so here's Jordan Reyne's website for more info about her music.
Seeing as our last episode was late, we've decided to spoil you with another episode this week. Robert and Alva catch up on what they've been playing this week, starting with a shout-out to Jordan Reyne's 600,000 word interactive novel Choice of the Cat, before discussing how to navigate Chaos;Child's depiction of women through a post-Weinstein lens. We also have a frank discussion on whether Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus's "No More Nazis" advertising campaign is cynical, uplifting, or both; appreciate Natsume's fine localization work on Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals; have unmitigated joy in Super Mario Odyssey; and we even do some investigation into the heart of the RuneScape cartel. In this, our ACTUAL two year anniversary, we decide to improve the format by intensifying it. To that end we deal with the lamentations of the socially inconsiderate, God, The Devil an Taz, a flirtation with Fanboyism, our aversion to practice, “finding the hero inside yourself”, Kent, and then round up with a realisation that maybe we’re not as superficial as all that. Thank you to our community contributors The Devil, Rikard, Captain Sickbeard, & Ozzie Dan for their topics. Hosts this issue are Tom, Taz & Beth. On music, Jordan remarks “A song is like a chemical reaction between listener and performer, where both bring so much to the equation that the experience is different every time. The effect is more powerful than drugs and comes with zero hangover.” This clean high fuels her as she handles her own producing, engineering, songwriting, arranging, graphic design, and web design. A remarkable task list for a woman who claims she can’t multitask to save her life, but then again, it’s that paradox that fascinates. From literally knocking on record label doors until one of said yes to being hailed as pioneer in a new genre by New Zealand’s National Radio, Jordan Reyne has always been a winning collection of contrary ideas. She is humorous and nihilistic. She is sensitive and thoughtful, rapacious and caustic. The darkness in her music is beautiful, and the light is just as much so. Thus, she stands in the middle of all this, directing traffic, casting vision, interpreting culture, and bending sound into an experience that is truly extraordinary.

Jordan Reyne has few peers in the New Zealand music scene. She brings together folk, sound collage, electronica and industrial noise in unique and haunting music that she describes as experimental folk/noir.Download the Counting The Beat - Jordan Reyne podcast
