In New York City, spirited badge-holders and independent music fans wove in and out of 150-person capacity clubs filled with groups from around the globe during the New Colossus Festival, held a few weeks ago. Now in its sixth year, 196 artists were scheduled to perform, more than half from outside the United States. But New Colossus may be an exception, not the rule, for international artists hoping to perform in the U.S. In the last few years, the process of obtaining necessary visas has grown much more arduous and expensive. "It's already at the maximum level of difficulty that we can rationalize," said Mischa Dempsey, frontperson for the thrilling Montreal band Knitting, who performed at New Colossus and described the process as "labor intensive." "I can't even think about it getting worse." On April 1, 2024, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) introduced a visa fee increase, raising the cost from $460 to over $1,615 per musician application, the first bump since 2016. According to the USCIS website, the increase allows the organization to "recover our operating costs more fully and support timely processing of new applications." Nearly a year later, "we are seeing the opposite," immigration attorney Gabriel Castro said. "We are seeing cases actually slow down." Changes to the system have caused delays. According to Tamizdat, a nonprofit that advocates for international artist mobility, all visa petitions are now filed through a centralized service center in Texas and are randomly divvied up to preexisting California and Vermont service centers. The result has been slowed processing times. Matthew Covey, an immigration attorney and Tamizdat's executive director, says Vermont has gone from one month to three. In California, it previously took two to four months, but now, it's eight. "Nobody's filing petitions long enough in advance to sustain an eight-month delay," says Covey. "You got a 50/50 chance of it being done in a reasonable amount of time or having to pay an extra $2,800 to expedite it." This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Chris Hume is joined by Luke Saint, Adam Terrell, Josiah Huestis, and Julio Delgado for a thought-provoking discussion on immigration, sparked by clips from an episode of The Sword & The Trowel. They explore the contrast between the message of the 1883 sonnet, "The New Colossus," which welcomes the "wretched refuse" of nations to America, and the current mindset of keeping people out at all costs. The panelists tackle the immigration crisis and attempt to answer Graham Gunden's question: "Is it a sin to break U.S. immigration law?"
Recorded on Christmas Day, this episode takes a deep dive into the evolving perception of Nazism in America, using the video game Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus as a lens to explore the differences between WWII-era Nazism and its modern reinterpretations. The Evolution of Nazi Narratives: How the term "Nazi" has broadened in modern discourse, creating risks of historical dilution. The impact of these redefinitions on social and political dialogue. Wolfenstein 2 as Cultural Commentary: The game as a provocative exploration of alternate history, imagining a Nazi-controlled America. Its role as a reflection on modern polarization and threats to democracy. Nuanced Dialogue and Building Alliances: The importance of moving beyond broad labels to foster understanding and inclusivity. Encouraging collaboration to address systemic challenges without alienating allies. Alternate History and Vigilance: Exploring "what if" scenarios and their ability to highlight the fragility of democracy. The dangers of redefining terms too broadly and empowering dangerous ideologies. Takeaway Message:This episode underscores the importance of engaging with history and culture thoughtfully. By understanding the complexities of Nazism's evolving narratives, we can better safeguard democratic values and foster unity across divides. Today's poem is by Emma Lazarus (July 22, 1849 – November 19, 1887), an American author of poetry, prose, and translations, as well as an activist for Jewish and Georgist causes. She is remembered for writing the sonnet"The New Colossus", which was inspired by the Statue of Liberty, in 1883.[1] Its lines appear inscribed on a bronze plaque, installed in 1903,[2] on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty.[3] Lazarus was involved in aiding refugees to New York who had fled antisemitic pogroms in eastern Europe, and she saw a way to express her empathy for these refugees in terms of the statue.[4] The last lines of the sonnet were set to music by Irving Berlin as the song "Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor" for the 1949 musical Miss Liberty, which was based on the sculpting of the Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World). The latter part of the sonnet was also set by Lee Hoiby in his song "The Lady of the Harbor" written in 1985 as part of his song cycle "Three Women".Lazarus was also the author of Poems and Translations (New York, 1867); Admetus, and other Poems(1871); Alide: An Episode of Goethe's Life (Philadelphia, 1874); Poems and Ballads of Heine (New York, 1881); Poems, 2 Vols.; Narrative, Lyric and Dramatic; as well as Jewish Poems and Translations.[5]—Bio via Wikipedia This is a public episode. Following the release of COLOSSEUMS, 2022 was a huge year for The Institutes. They kicked it off in style with an invitation from one of their heroes, Tim Burgess, to appear on his legendary Twitter Listening Party and chat about the story behind their debut album. This led to a sold-out hometown show at The Kasbah in Coventry and was followed by their first USA tour, playing 20 shows in 2 weeks including packed-out gigs at tastemaker festivals SXSW in Austin and New Colossus in New York, plus a SOLD OUT headlining show in Los Angeles. The band returned home and continued to tour across the UK, selling out Manchester and their hometown of Coventry and topped off the summer with festival appearances at the Isle Of White, Camper Calling and Shiiine On Weekender festivals. The band's musical output is too eclectic to pigeonhole, but wears its influences proudly, sitting somewhere between shoegaze and indie rock, with a nod in the direction of Fleetwood Mac harmonies and The Byrd's psychedelic jangles. At times raw, and at others refined, their sound is filled with candid and vulnerable, poetic lyrics on a bed of layered guitars, soaring howls and a solid grooving rhythm section, which has seen them gain plaudits for their album and their live shows worldwide. The Institutes can switch from chaotic but ecstatic melodic wonder to delicate brazen honesty in the blink ofan eye.The Institutes have already proven they can produce one deep, engaging, moving and timeless album, after only their first year together. With all the recent evidence pointing towards a shifting up of the gears for their 2nd Album, due later in 2023 and destined to be a game changer.

Isabel O'Hara Walsh leads writing workshops through thehttps://www.redbudwriting.org ( Redbud Writing Project). Redbud offers classes virtually and around the Triangle on topics like Writing the Novel, Experimental Fiction, and one that Isabel and I talk about, Joyful Creation – how to get your writing juices flowing when staring at that blank page. Isabel shares about their experience incorporating anti-racist practices into the workshop and feedback processes. An important resource in helping to shape this framework is the book The Anti-Racist Writer's Workshop: How to Decolonize the Creative Classroom by Felicia Rose Chavez. Chavez's book challenges, in her words, “art's politics of power and privilege” and lays bare the ways that traditional – read: white-supremacist – methods of running workshops work to silence the voices of writers of color and writers with other marginalized identities. Isabel and Mara Thomas also discuss another Artist Soapbox favorite when it comes to rethinking the feedback process: Liz Lerman's Critical Response Process. Lerman's work helps tailor the feedback process to help the creator retain agency over their work and create an environment where they get the feedback they're actually looking for rather than an onslaught of unfiltered opinions. BIO: Isabel O'Hara Walsh (she/they) is a writer, teacher, and practicing witch. A graduate of the MFA program in fiction at North Carolina State University, Isabel teaches fiction writing at the Redbud Writing Project, has published short stories in Pastel Pastoral and The Metaworker, and is at work on her second novel. Through her business https://www.edgewisewitch.com/ (EdgeWise Witch), Isabel offers transformative 1-1 and group work sessions that incorporate Tarot, writing, and other ritual to clarify the right path forward for her clients. Mara Thomas got to know poet and educator Zoe Tuck through the School of the Alternative in Black Mountain, North Carolina where Zoe taught a class called “Book Magic.” “Book Magic” started from the premise that there is a grain of truth to the magic we remember from children's books and other fantastical literature. And if those books contained a grain of truth, how might participants nurture that grain and write their own magical systems into being? It's Mara Thomas in conversation with artist and educator Luan Joy Sherman! Mara connected with Luan through the http://schoolofthealternative.com/ (School of the Alternative) (SotA) an immersive, non-hierarchical learning environment that seeks to “create conditions necessary for a present-day community of pioneering artists and critical thinkers.” During this year's SotA session, Luan facilitated a class titled, “Fertile Fear" which Mara and Luan discuss in this episode. The description of Fertile Fear: "A class focused on making friends with fear/avoidance and using these instructive feelings as a door into our true desires. Compassion, vulnerability, emotional safety, and community support are the ideal ingredients for accessing bravery. We'll discuss dimensions of fear, the power of vulnerability, and create guidelines for how we can cultivate bravery together." One of the tools Luan shares in this episode is what he calls his “Daily Practice” – identifying things that he needs to connect with on a daily basis to help him feel emotionally, physically, and creatively healthy. Luan discusses how his Daily Practice came to be, how it was received in creative community, and the tendency that can creep in around using tools like this as a form of self-judgment. "Loving our Immigrant Neighbor: Seeking Truth through Psychology and Poetry."Immigrants inhabit a reality seemingly far removed from our own. This project examines the lesser-known immigration realities of Chinese and Hispanic immigrants using the poems these immigrants have written. Far from a straightforward reading of the poems, the project attempts to see the poems as expressive of the personal constructs of these immigrants, a concept pioneered by George Kelly though hereoriginally applied to poetry. These realities are then compared to the reality expressed in EmmaLazarus' more famous immigration poem “The New Colossus.” In the end, the paper arguesthat understanding the realities of immigrants, rather than simply the often-taughtimmigration ideal, is a way toward loving our immigrant neighbors.

Hey friends, It's Tamara here. I hope you enjoyed the previous episode introducing 2 of our new guest hosts: Lormarev Jones and Griffin James. I'm back once more before I had the mic over, to introduce two more guest hosts this season: Juliana Finch and Mara Thomas. Yes, if you've been a long time listener of Artist Soapbox, then you will likely know Juliana and Mara. Of course you can also read their bios on our updated and very awesome Artist Soapbox website, in the meantime, here are some bits and bobs about these two wonderful humans: Juliana Finch has spent almost two decades writing and performing songs and getting up to various theater- and film- adjacent shenanigans. She has released five albums, performed at music festivals and venues all over the country, and loves having Durham as her home base. She is on the writing team for Artist Soapbox's Jesus Pancake and can be heard as a voice actor in Crocodile Twins and in several other audio dramas. Juliana also wrote the Artist Soapbox theme song that you are enjoying so much in this episode, and she suggested that we call some of our merch Artist Soapsox – I mean, we do have socks in the https://my-store-11630045.creator-spring.com (ASBX store). Artist Soapsox, makes me laugh. Mara Thomas has been following their curiosity down many different paths for the past 20 years. In that time, they have been a musician, actor, voiceover artist, creativity coach, and playwright. Mara's original plays have been performed in the Triangle and NYC and they have held creative writing residencies in Hudson, NY and Martha's Vineyard. Along with their creative pursuits, Mara is a somatic therapist in private practice in Durham. Mara has written over 2 dozen blog posts on the Artist Soapbox website, been interviewed as a guest, been an interviewer, released 2 solo episodes, and voice acted in one of the Declaration of Love episodes. Like Juliana, they are on the Jesus Pancake writing team. Mara is undeniably an ASBX rock star. In this episode, you'll hear these two friends introduce themselves and each other. You'll get a sense of their style and vibe, and what they'll be focusing on in their individual episodes this Season. Just like Lormarev and Griffin, Juliana and Mara are two of my favorite people. I know you will love them too. I'm so grateful that they have agreed to step in as hosts. Hey friends, It's Tamara here. I hope you enjoyed the previous 3 audio fiction episodes from the Food for Thought project. As you know, Artist Soapbox produces original scripted audio fiction such as the three FFT projects, as well as interviews with artists about their creative process. We're back to the interview/conversational format with this episode and most of the ones to follow for this season. Today, I'm dipping in to introduce 2 of our new podcast hosts – Lormarev Jones and Griffin James. If you've been a long time listener of Artist Soapbox, then you will likely know them and you can also read their https://artistsoapbox.org/about/#team (bios on the Artist Soapbox website). Have you looked at our beautiful website? I am so in love with it. Now, Lormarev and Griffin contain multitudes of course, but here are some bread crumbs for your to follow into their conversation: Lormarev Jones is an Educator, Director/Choreographer, and Actor and Intimacy Director. Lormarev currently teaches at Meredith College while continuing to freelance in all her areas of expertise. She has been interviewed on the Soapbox several times, acted in an episode of ASBX shorts and will be super featured in the upcoming scripted audio fiction piece: Jesus Pancake. She is well-known as a hydration advocate. Griffin James is an interdisciplinary theatre maker and writer local to the triangle area. They have a degree in English Creative Writing from NC State where they were involved with the university theatre as a performer, stage manager, and more. Griffin was the production manager for all six of the ASBX Shorts and all 3 of the Food for Thought Projects. Whew, my blood runs cold thinking about all of that logistical management. You can also catch them voicing the Drunk College Student in I'm Not Here Right Now. (Griffin was not type cast in that role.) In this episode, you'll hear these two friends introduce themselves and each other. You'll get a sense of their style and vibe, and what they'll be focusing on in their own episodes this Season. Lormarev and Griffin are two of my favorite people, and I know you will love them too. I'm so grateful that they have agreed to step in as hosts. And guess what? In the next episode, you'll hear me introduce two more of my favorite people and guest hosts, Juliana Finch and the inimitable Mara Thomas. So stay tuned for that.
