My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Michael Kell Mahoney, author of the book The Land of Broken Toys. Michael Kell Mahoney is a retired New York City detective who somehow found his way from Manhattan to the Balkans. After his time with the NYPD, Michael spent two decades working internationally for the U.S. Department of State, the United Nations, and the U.S. Department of Justice as a police and security consultant.   Land of Broken Toys: Kosovo is a fictional account, based on real events, from Mr. Mahoney's one year police mission in Kosovo. Michael's writing blends reportage, reflection, and storytelling, inviting readers—and now listeners—into a landscape where the past is never far away and every story carries weight.   The Land of Broken Toys: Kosovo is a crime thriller by Michael Kell Mahoney. But it is so much more than that. Readers will get a history lesson to help explain the issues in Kosovo, as well as a young cop's journey figuring out what he really wants out of life.   We meet an NYPD cop named JB who wants to be a detective. However, a series of mishaps leaves him shaken and certain that he will never make detective. With that knowledge, he decides to open a chocolate store. But he'll need money, so he signs on for a year-long UN policing mission in Kosovo. What he believes will be a simple 12-months training local police recruits turns into so much more than he bargains for.   We meet a host of characters who have chosen to go on the same mission for a variety of reasons - and with a variety of belief systems in place. We also meet the antagonist, Gashi, an Albanian who hates the Serbs - and anyone who disagrees with him, even Albanians. Gashi's men wreak havoc across the area, and JB is right in the middle of the action.   This story moves quickly, has fun, quirky characters, and keeps you guessing. This is a fun read. This week's show drifts between reassurance and reckoning, pairing bittersweet standards with songs that circle aging, endings, and the uneasy comfort of momentum. Emmett Davenport and Lady Attercop explore the space between "qué será, será" acceptance and the creeping sense that something important is ticking closer. It's a late-night Cabaret episode for holding hands, taking stock, and deciding—again—how to keep going. WARNING! This show is for adults. Johnny is a self-taught artist whose work has graced album covers, art collection and gallery walls for years. Chris and Elecia bounce from topic to topic, discussing life and work and occasionally answering listener emails. Python can format code into equations in Latex with Latexify (as noted in this tweet)  Interesting sensor: Sensing deep-tissue physiology via wearable ultrasonic phased arrays   Turing Complete - a listener-recommended logic gate puzzle game for Steam. In the past, we've also talked about Zachtronics' TIS-100 which is similar and Shenzhen IO which is at the circuit level. Oh, and there is The Human Resource Machine by Tomorrow Corporation. A listener recommended the Agile Embedded Podcast, particularly the episode on technical debt. News that Rollercoasters are triggering iPhone 14 and Apple Watch Crash Detection led to a mentions of a blog post about debugging Fitbit's issues with rollercoasters and accelerometers. Visual Studio Code for embedded systems development: You can use CubeMX and Platform.io (here is a how-to) Try out this stm32-for-vscode extension that claims to do what you want (we haven't tried it, tell us if it works)  Or you can go more directly with the cortex-debug extension and locally installed ARM GCC package. Don't forget the VSCode Code Spell Checker extension. From the notes for Elecia's class: Where to buy small quantity prototyping components Having looked for an OLED display part in Live Class, I wanted to put together a list of where you might want to look for components, especially for the prototype stage.  Adafruit and Sparkfun (and EMSL and a lot of other maker stores). If you are using their code as template or test code, look for their boards to see if you can use them. Worldwide and large components distributors with local distribution: Digikey is worldwide and they resell Adafruit and Sparkfun so if you don't want to start with an “OLED” search on Digikey and sort through the results, well, you can start with easier prototype parts. Farnell is a UK company though they have other names in other locations (Newark in the US and Element14 in Asia and Oceania). If they have your flag, you can probably get cheap shipping. Farnell is usually good for all of Europe. RS Components is also new to me though they seem to stock Adafruit parts as well as general electronics. They have lots of distributors all over the world (including more in Africa than I usually see). AliExpress is huge and worldwide, shipping from Asia. It is hard to find things but searching “Adafruit [part]” or “Sparkfun [part]” and you might find what you want… or a cheaper knockoff. Usually you want results in the Electronic Components and Supplies. Note: if it seems too good to be true it probably is. UK has Pimoroni and Cool Components and OkDo resell Adafruit and Sparkfun as well as other pieces like BBC micro:bit and Raspberry Pi. These may work for European countries. Seeed Studio has a wide variety of parts, the Grove and Components categories have parts that might be interesting. They deliver quickly and cheaply to Oceania and Asia.  DFRobot is new to me but looks great. It was recommended for folks in Asia and Oceania. Their parts are resold through Digikey, Arrow, Farnell (Newark).   Australia: Little Bird Electronics, Core Electronics, and Altronics   Transcript Thank you to our sponsor this week!

DoT EP42: Ian McDonald Talks About Some Freaks, Plus New Comedy from Sean Sullivan

The Department of Tangents Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 12, 2017 57:37

Writer/Director Ian McDonald has seen a lot of coming of age films, so when he decided to make his own, he had a few critiques and corrections. Some Freaks a story of changing relationships, the strain of feeling different from everyone around you, and ultimately doing what you need to grow. When Matt first meets Jill, he doesn't make a great impression. He and his friend Elmo are playing video games and making bad jokes, as high school boys are wont to do. Jill overhears Matt make a fat joke, and it almost destroys any chance for them to be friends. But as they get to know each other, they become friends and begin a troubled romance. This isn't a John-Hughes-like celebration of the awkwardness of youth. These people can truly cut each other in ways that aren't offset by their inherent naivete or charm. They are vulnerable, including and maybe especially Elmo, who is deep in the closet, and are willing to pick up the easy cudgel to teach each other not to get too close. When he has a choice between cute and real, McDonald most often chooses real. I spoke with McDonald about Some Freaks, which is his debut film, and where some of those treasured teen comedies failed to resonate. It was also the first film for Lily Mae Harrington, who plays Jill and contributed a song to the soundtrack. The score was provided by Walter Sickert & the Army of Broken Toys. At the end of the conversation, stick around for new comedy from Sean Sullivan's new album Song & Dance Man, available October 13 on the Comedy Dynamics label. Sullivan is a brutally funny comic, the kind of guy who can fight his frustrations with a balance of nimble wit and the blunt force of sarcasm. Check out “Chicken or the Egg” on the podcast, and then pick up the new album.
