TCW Podcast Episode 230 - Crafting the World of WarCraft   World of Warcraft has stood the test of time for twenty years, and now we can explore the fascinating history behind its creation. The developers drew inspiration from MMOs like Ultima Online, EverQuest, Anarchy Online, Dark Age of Camelot, and more, incorporating what they loved while tackling unique challenges. From art style and storytelling to quest design, factions, and PvP, every aspect of the game presented obstacles to overcome. Despite launching with several rushed elements, WoW captivated a gaming audience eager for an accessible MMO—and went on to set records for years to come   TCW 054 - Blizzard: Vikings and WarCraft: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/blizzard-vikings-and-warcraft/ TCW 055 - Blizzard: Hellfire and The World… of WarCraft: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/blizzard-hellfire-and-the-world%E2%80%A6-of-warcraft/ How to play Necromunda: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqAxPXd5y8g Place Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment (Affiliate): https://amzn.to/41MvT5c The WoW Diary: A Journal of Computer Game Development [Second Edition] (Affiliate): https://amzn.to/4kzpxNT EverQuest Launch Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AJdrc8ZsEI TCW 219 - Diablo 1: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/diablo-1/ TCW 220 - Diablo 2: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/diablo-2/ A Brief History of Chess: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeB-1F-UKO0 Tabula Rasa Gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGQ0Nb3U9kw Tabula Rasa Box Art: https://cdn.mobygames.com/covers/4266351-richard-garriotts-tabula-rasa-pre-order-bonus-pack-windows-front.jpg World of Warcraft Box Art: https://i.etsystatic.com/19063773/r/il/3b9985/2196312265/il_fullxfull.2196312265_13ii.jpg WarCraft 1 Intro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SA40KEDV6Dc WoW V0.53: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RszVOPx1apI&t=0s Duskwood Retrospective: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2suPQAZMqc TCW 030 - Doom!: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/doom-1479057917/ Ed Bighead Campaign: https://www.facebook.com/RememberWhenNick/videos/remember-when-bigheads-campaign/279376435941596/ Snow White Trailer (1937): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L16P0rip9E4 13th Warrior Cave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTVze7cfwWU     New episodes are on the 1st and 15th of every month!   TCW Email: feedback@theycreateworlds.com  Twitter: @tcwpodcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theycreateworlds Alex's Video Game History Blog: http://videogamehistorian.wordpress.com Alex's book, published Dec 2019, is available at CRC Press and at major on-line retailers: http://bit.ly/TCWBOOK1     Intro Music: Josh Woodward - Airplane Mode -  Music - "Airplane Mode" by Josh Woodward. In Everquest, the world is populated with powerful gods and dragons. These creatures usually spawn in a 12-72 hour window and if killed, drop the most powerful treasures in the game. It takes a well coordinated group of up to 72 players to bring the beasts down (less if the players are well geared and skilled.) Tomias mans the batphone in our guild. He tracks when these creatures spawn, and alerts all 995 of us when they appear. It's an important position because all of the other guilds in the game are trying to kill these creatures & if we don't get there quick, another group will show up and try to get all the treasures! In todays ep, Tomias shares his experience manning the batphone, taking down high level raid mobs with his brother, and his early days of Everquest play. “You're in our world now.” This bold tagline led Sony's 1999 ad blitz for EverQuest (Boss Fight Books, 2024), the year's most anticipated massively multiplayer game. Though just five words long, it challenged players to live in a virtual world beyond anything they'd experienced before—and delivered. The game that proved the MMORPG's potential, EverQuest outsold all prior entries in the genre and was the most popular subscription game in North America for five years until Blizzard's World of Warcraft overthrew it. Yet EverQuest lives on, with tens of thousands of players logging in every day. Based on new interviews with EverQuest developers and veteran MMORPG developers, journalist Matthew S. Smith explores EverQuest's unlikely creation at a studio built to develop sports games, a rocky release which overwhelmed the game's ill-prepared datacenter, the enticing game loops that placed EverQuest in a media firestorm around gaming addiction, and the real-money black market for EverQuest items that foretold the future of digital goods. They break down Urbit's promise as a peer-to-peer platform with roots in a deep, almost otherworldly commitment to resilience and a long time horizon. Alongside ~littel-wolfur's take on memory as the strange balance of laziness and persistence, they dig into shrubbery, Urbit's latest namespace innovation, and the challenge of creating tools that last. From generational shifts to the philosophy of technology, Stewart and ~littel-wolfur contemplate whether Urbit's rebellious craftsmanship might be the foundation for a more enduring internet. By setting reminders to review information just before it's forgotten, spaced repetition acts as an effortless yet powerful memory tool. Although the practice demands daily discipline, it becomes an invaluable mechanism for retaining knowledge across vast timescales.SuperMemo and Incremental Reading: ~littel-wolfur shares his experience with SuperMemo, the original spaced repetition software that takes the method even further. SuperMemo's “incremental reading” allows users to gradually extract information from lengthy texts, breaking down complex learning into manageable, spaced chunks. For ~littel-wolfur, this approach goes beyond mere memorization; it turns learning into an immersive, long-term commitment. The Urbit Experiment: Urbit, a decentralized peer-to-peer network and OS, represents a radical rethinking of the internet. Stewart and ~littel-wolfur examine Urbit's potential as a platform where users truly own and control their data, echoing ideals of early Web 1.0. As the “long-haul project” of the tech world, Urbit cultivates an almost timeless ethos, making it as much a social experiment as a computing system.Shrubbery and Namespace Innovation: A core element of Urbit, “shrubbery” introduces a namespace that enables users to organize, connect, and retrieve information from across their digital universe. ~littel-wolfur explains how shrubbery allows users to link pieces of data like conversation notes, wikis, and documents, making it a versatile learning platform on Urbit. The elegance of this integration hints at a future internet where information can be personalized and seamlessly connected.Craftsmanship and Digital Resilience: ~littel-wolfur and Stewart touch on the fading art of craftsmanship in tech, which often gets lost in the layers of abstractions that modern software relies on. For ~littel-wolfur, coding on Urbit feels like working in a digital woodshop, where the focus is on intentionality and precision rather than flashy or disposable tech. This philosophy of craftsmanship offers a refreshing take on the art of creation in software, hinting at the durability and authenticity Urbit hopes to embody.AI's Limitations and Overconfidence Trap: The episode also highlights the limitations of AI, especially when it encourages laziness or over-reliance. While AI can help automate routine tasks, ~littel-wolfur warns of its tendency to produce fragile, overly complex solutions that unravel under scrutiny. They caution that true understanding comes not from shortcuts, but from engaging deeply with the work—a point that resonates with their belief in disciplined learning practices like spaced repetition. The Value of Optimism and Long Time Horizons: Amid a society obsessed with quick wins and rapid monetization, Stewart and ~littel-wolfur see Urbit's culture as a refreshing outlier, filled with builders who value curiosity and long-term thinking. This “thousand-year mindset” stands in contrast to much of the tech industry, where projects are often driven by immediate financial returns. By embracing a philosophy that resists the pressure for instant success, Urbit aligns itself with a vision of digital infrastructure that, rather than fueling transient trends, aims to be a lasting foundation for generations to come.

In S2E18 of Richardson's Rubicon, hosts John Richardson and Nate Stinehour delve into the thrilling and enriching intricacies of the gaming community within the context of EverQuest, an iconic MMORPG that's been captivating players for over 25 years. Underscoring the sense of companionship and support fostered among community members, the hosts share personal triumphs and challenges in the game, creating an engaging discussion for both veteran gamers and newcomers alike. At the heart of their conversation is the love of groups and the fear of not finding one, and dealing with feelings of inadequacy in moments of comparison. The hosts' candid dialogue about imposter syndrome in the face of expansive game knowledge offers a relatable element to the podcast. They urge listeners to embrace curiosity, pointing out that seeking help within the community is a strength and an avenue for continuous learning. This episode also provides valuable insights into the unique characteristics of different gaming classes, particularly druids, wizards, and paladins. The hosts highlight the importance of selecting a class based on personal enjoyment and play style, rather than bending to opinions from other players. They also delve into the interesting dynamics of the gaming economy, underscoring the charm of exploring zones for valuable drops instead of relentlessly chasing top-tier gear from early stages. Providing a deeper analysis, the hosts contrast the unique mechanics and complexities of EverQuest with the more streamlined nature of modern games. Nostalgia, they note, can be a powerful tool for attracting new players to a game that remains a niche favourite. In the spirit of community bonding and engagement, they express excitement for an upcoming PvP arena event. Later on, they delve into the challenges of balancing their love for the game with their real-life responsibilities. John shares his struggles as a possibly confused introverted individual with limited gaming time, while Nate speaks about memorable moments of bonding and support within the community. As the episode wraps up, they plan an "ask us anything" session, walk listeners through gaming confessions and experiences documented in Reddit posts, and share their contact information for listeners keen on joining their adventure. Overall, this episode of Richardson's Rubicon forms a deep and vibrant tribute to the EverQuest gaming community, treating listeners to a profoundly personal and informative experience. 05:02 Emphasizes return to basics in MMO gaming. 07:52 Guild members support each other, friendly atmosphere. 11:11 MMOs offer escapism and online social interaction. 14:38 Conversations recognise knowledge but feel inexperienced. 19:18 Sense of achievement and connecting with others. 21:23 EverQuest is a niche game, not for millions. 24:09 Excited about stories, game intricacies, and nostalgia. 26:47 Disinterest in EverQuest, level 80 focus. 32:10 Secret Confessions with loot. 35:41 Cleric build focused on solo play style. 37:11 Progressed from novice to proficient in skill. 43:07 Classes are useful, shaman good first choice. 46:39 New player seeking money-making advice on P1999. 49:57 Occasional Gargoyle Eyes, valuable steel loot.
