Anti-diet activist and marketing pro Kaila Prins joins us this week to break down the role of marketing in diet culture, the complex ways we consume triggering material, the importance of embracing social justice in the body positivity movement, how she transitioned from her own eating-disorder recovery to thinking critically about diet culture, the ways in which our personal brand can quickly overtake our personhood, the dangers of working as a coach when you’re still going through your own recovery, and much more! PLUS, Christy answers a listener question about how intuitive eating can help with feelings of overeating as opposed to restriction. This episode originally aired on October 16, 2017. Kaila Prins is a multifaceted, multi-passionate explorer or culture, performance, body image, and marketing. In other words: she has no idea what to call herself, because she does a lot. After recovering from orthorexia, anorexia, and an exercise addiction, Kaila began a career in marketing while moonlighting as a body image coach for recovering women. She is now a speaker on and writer of unpopular opinions about marketing psychology and behavioral economics in the context of body image and is the host of the forthcoming podcast, Your Body, Your Brand. In her “spare” time, she is known as burlesque dancer and drag artist DeeDeeQueen, and she teaches burlesque dance, storytelling, and theatre in San Jose, California. You can find her at performingwoman.com. This episode is brought to you by Christy's forthcoming book, Anti-Diet, which is now available for pre-order! I'm so excited to kick off 2018 with a dynamic and fascinating conversation. Are you ready to meet the first drag queen who is actually trapped in a woman’s body? In today's episode of the Life Unrestricted Podcast, I am chatting with Kaila Prins, the woman with the most awesome drag make up I've ever seen. She is a body positive burlesque and pole dancer and by that she is a performing woman... performing "woman"! Kaila is also a body positive wellness and recovery coach, feminist writer and speaker and a fellow podcastine... She talks about her 13-year battle with eating disorders, calorie counting, yo-yo dieting and compulsive exercise and has the most amazing guests. Kaila is one of the precious few voices who bring the taboo topics of eating disorders, exercise addiction, and body image obsession into the open and is an inspiration for thousands – myself included. This show will leave you feeling ready to change the world, one step towards self-acceptance at a time. You will hear us talk about: – How "healthy" and "skinny" have nothing to do with each other – How we are potentially harming ourselves by doing what society calls "healthy" – How most eating disorders go undiagnosed in a culture that promotes harmful behaviors – How to tell if you are exercise dependent and how to break free of exercise addiction – How too much exercise can be severely damaging to our bodies, our fertility and our emotional health – How our obsession to be skinny can keep us trapped in recovered-enough and how this can hold us trapped and certainly keeps us from enjoying life as fully as we could – How we can actually LET ourselves enjoy life, step out of our obsession to control our bodies and the need to be thinner – How to get over our internalized fat-phobia and diet-culture mindset – Why burlesque dancing is a great way to help you reconnect to and feel good in your body as it is returning to its happy weight – How discovery is an important to leave the disordered mindset behind and step into your real self – How discovering who you really are is worth so much more than living your life trying to match an unrealistic, distorted ideal – How important it is to see behind media's messages, to understand the psychology of marketing, to educate ourselves how we are being marketed to and why advertisement is intended to make us feel "less than" and "not good enough", so that we, as customers, keep coming back – How we can change the conversation, one brave woman at a time... ... And so much more!   Kaila is currently working on a program to work with clients who want to leave their exercise addiction and disordered eating behaviors behind and start living a fulfilling, satisfying life according to their own rules. You'll find out more about her, her blog, her dancing gigs and (soon) her program on her website: www.performingwoman.com You can follow her on all the different social media platforms (@performingwoman) and her awesome podcast is here: www.findingourhunger.com ********* Don't forget!********* Make sure to join my tribe and meet some of the most supportive, loving and kind people of all shapes and sizes, including great coaches and leaders! Body positivity is something I constantly bring up on the show - not only because it's an important part of my own story, but because I'm constantly getting questions from listeners about their own body shame and struggles. That's why I am so excited by this unapologetic and energizing look into pole dancing and burlesque with Kaila Prins. Not only did she use both to help her work through an eating disorder, but she has also discovered what it means to be embodied and to live in a deeply consensual place, as a result. From controlling the gaze of the audience to sharing what it's like to get naked on stage for the first time, we roll around in gender, safe spaces, embracing 'ugly' as a by-product of feeling empowered and attuned to your body, and so so much more. Psst...did you know you can follow Sex Gets Real on Twitter and Facebook? It's true. Oh! And Dawn is on Instagram.   Today on Date Yourself Radio I’ve got Body Positive Wellness Coach Kaila Prins. I recently met Kaila through a women’s podcasting networking group, and when I learned about her story, I knew I wanted her to share it with you all. Kaila describes herself as a happy kid growing up, but once she realized that boys were a thing you could kiss, have crushes on, and be crushed on, it sent her down a path of not understanding who really owned her body. What I really loved about Kaila’s story is that her journey from disordered eating goes beyond recovery. She wanted to live beyond the “strong not skinny” mentality of many women recovering from disordered eating. She went into a phase she calls discovery, which is about filling the void of obsessing over food + exercise with other things. Enter pole + burlesque dancing. Aka, dating yourself. In this episode, Kaila shares: How she didn’t know her body belonged to her How she started dating after recovering from orthorexia, anorexia, and exercise addiction How recovery wasn’t enough for Kaila to move beyond disordered eating About Kaila Kaila Prins is a body positive wellness coach, burlesque and pole dancer, and voiceover actor. After recovering from orthorexia, anorexia, and exercise addiction, she has set out to understand and overturn the reasons why we're all so darn uncomfortable in our own bodies. Using her podcast, Finding Our Hunger, as the medium and burlesque, pole dance, and drag as a message, Kaila Prins speaks radical truths about body positivity, health at every size, feminism, sexuality, and recovery...usually while covered in glitter.
