I have to tell you that this has to be one of the most vulnerable interviews I have had with a guest. Do not miss one minute of this episode. Elizabeth Laura Nelson is a Brooklyn-based writer and editor. I discovered Elizabeth after reading her Modern Love Story in the New York Times (the link is below), which was their most popular article on social media the weekend it was published! Back to that in a minute. Elizabeth co-founded Jenny, a digital magazine focused on Gen X and elder Millennial women and served as the managing editor of Woman's World and the deputy health editor for Best Life. Known for her candid essays and approachable style, Elizabeth has contributed to websites including xoJane, SheSaid, Elite Daily, YourTango, and more. Her work often explores relationships, wellness, pop culture, and modern family life, connecting deeply with readers through her personal stories and insights on subjects like single motherhood, dating, and midlife. After I read Elizabeth's Modern Love story in the New York Times, I immediately played detective to find her so I could ask her to be my guest on Loving Later Life. I keep telling you all, it never hurts to ask! Beginning with a blooper that I decided to leave in, this episode blossoms like a flower being watered in real time. And by the time we get to the end you will have witnessed the full bloom of an incredibly moving story of self-discovery and love. I am so grateful to Elizabeth for sharing her genuine heart with us. I know for certain that anyone who listens to the entire episode will walk away with something they will not ever forget. There are so many golden nuggets unearthed along the path of our conversation. You must hear every single minute. Please join us…

Noora Raj Brown knows what it feels like to be uncomfortable, but she has never let it stop her. Whether it's been learning on the job or pushing unconventional conversations into the mainstream, Noora is on the front lines of what it means to be an entrepreneurial marketer. As Executive Vice President of Brand at goop, Noora has been instrumental in working with Gwyneth Paltrow to transform goop from a newsletter and multi-brand site into a full-fledged brand (and not a celebrity brand) since 2016. As a member of the executive team, Noora oversees brand and integrated marketing, corporate positioning, talent outreach, television production, social media, influencer marketing, and press strategy for the goop brand and all initiatives. She also serves as chief spokesperson for the company and CEO. Prior to goop, Noora worked in various creative industries, most recently at Time Inc, where she led communications for their fashion and style brands, including InStyle, People StyleWatch, XoJane, and Wallpaper*. She is also a founding board member of political engagement organizations I am a Voter and Commit2Change. In this episode, we dive into what makes a strong brand, and the mental filter Noora employs to decipher what's on brand for goop. We talk about the importance of hiring experts and giving them the autonomy to do their best work, why you should be learning all the things you don't find interesting, what she looks for in a hire, and why if you want to succeed, you need to be useful. We also discuss what it's like to work for one of the most famous women in the world and how feeling lost in your career is natural but can also bring the gift of time and self-reflection.

Jena Kingsley was born and raised in New York City. She attributes everything she knows about comedy to a loving yet dysfunctional family. Her name is pronounced Jena, like Jameson, but only one N. Her parents spelled it wrong. Most recently Jena has made her mark internationally with her pranks on unsuspecting New Yorkers. The media has called her pranks “Genius” and “Brilliant.” Perez Hilton called her “one bold and funny lady.” She released four viral prank videos in a row (“Are You On The List”, a Starbucks Prank where she posed as a Starbucks Bouncer, and “No Selfie Zone”, where she set up no selfie zones in NYC subject to fine, and “Social Media in Real Life” where she tries out the things we do on social media on unsuspecting New Yorkers and “Terms & Conditions” where she let people know what they have just blindly agreed to) all garnering major international media attention landing her on CNN, TIME, MTV, ABC, The Today Show, USA Today, AdWeek, Perez Hilton, CBS The Doctors and more. TruTV ran her “No Selfie Zone” video on their top funniest videos episode. In sixth grade she won an award for writing excellence, which of course means nothing now. She is the writer/creator of the popular blog “Darcy Dates” and she also blogs for the Huffington Post. She is a regular guest of “Huffington Post Live” and Sirius XM. She has written for The New York Observer, New York Post, XOJane, HowAboutWe, BeautyBlitz.com and others. She made her television debut appearance doing stand up on “Live From Gotham” on AXS TV. Her stand up appearances include The Stand, Gotham Comedy Club, Levity Live, Carolines Comedy Club, Governors, Stand Up New York and others. She also appeared in The New York Comedy Festival. Her comedy is dedicated to her father. One of the funniest men she knew. Who told her she was funny. Really funny. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/otcpod1/support

Isabel Foxen Duke shares her personal story of chronic dieting and how her quest for thinness ultimately led her to treatment for an addiction to cocaine. She shares her recovery story and how her struggles with food and body image went unnoticed for decades because her body wasn't "thin enough" to alert people in her life. She shares about how she recovered, moments of clarity she had, and insight into her healing process. She talks about the perils of the hunger and fullness diet and how she broke free from it. Isabel Foxen Duke is the Creator of Stop Fighting Food — a free video training program for women who want to "stop feeling crazy around food." After years of trying to overcome emotional eating, binge-eating and chronic weight-cycling through "traditional" and alternative approaches, Isabel discovered some radical new ways to get women over their "food issues" once and for all — not just by shifting the mindsets of individuals, but by challenging the dominant diet culture as a whole. Widespread reporting on aspects of white supremacy–from police brutality to the mass incarceration of African Americans–have made it impossible to ignore the issue of race. To guide us in discussing this difficult subject, Seattle-based writer and activist Ijeoma Oluo stepped up with perspectives from her book So You Want to Talk About Race. Joined in conversation by Associate Editor of The Stranger Charles Mudede, Oluo delved into subjects ranging from intersectionality to affirmative action to “model minorities.” Together, Oluo and Mudede navigated questions of race that arise in our daily lives. How do you tell your roommate her jokes are racist? Why did your sister-in-law take umbrage when you asked to touch her hair–and how do you make it right? How do you explain white privilege to your white, privileged friend? Join Oluo and Mudede for an honest conversation about race and racism, and how they infect almost every aspect of American life. Ijeoma Oluo is a writer and speaker whose work on race has been featured in The Guardian, New York magazine, xoJane, Jezebel, and more. She is also an editor-at-large at The Establishment, and Seattle magazine named her “one of the most influential people” in Seattle. Charles Mudede is a Zimbabwean writer, filmmaker, and Associate Editor for The Stranger. Mudede has written for the New York Times, Cinema Scope, Ars Electronica, C Theory, and others. Presented by Town Hall Seattle. Recorded live in The Great Hall on October 2, 2019.

This is an important interview because before the "Cortes Crisis" I used to think the percent of women that hate or outright disregard men as sentient, fellow human beings was very small. Perhaps relegated to the delusional misandrist 10% that populate the world of Salon, XOJane, and American Universities. But a simple list on female beauty propelled AJ into the global stage. A list that was at worst PG, and 100% truthful. We discuss the consequences, ramifications, and what it means that the world has lost it's collective shit when ONE man ACCIDENTALLY listed what men wanted in women. Please share with other young men (and women) in that this conversation NEEDS to be heard so young men know precisely what the odds are against them.

Isabel Foxen Duke shares on PHIT for a Queen Her first diet was as a child encouraged by her pediatrician from that point felt she was always in a dieting cycle. Finally, after years went to treatment for binge eating learning that binges are caused by dieting. The constant pursuit was the problem in itself. We must separate health from weight. Making a wellness mask for vanity. There is NO evidence that larger bodies cause chronic illnesses. “Blaming poor health on fatness is like blaming lung cancer on yellow teeth” Linda Bacon Culturally we have given people the opportunity to make dieting a moralistic value. We now know that dieting leads to bias thus making weight a status symbol Stop saying healthy when you mean skinny Trying to lose weight by dieting is like trying to win money with the lottery Most people that have lost weight on a diet have had some rebound. We must address our own weight bias I was taught to fear weight gain and thin was rewarded Prioritize mental health as part of your health equation! My mental health is avoiding the judgment of my food and body. Ever so often, I fall head over heels in love with someone within the first 15 minutes of talking to them and today's guest just so happens to fall into that category. Isabel Foxen Duke, the brilliant heart and soul behind Stop Fighting Food, blew me away with her real deal approach, compassionate wisdom, and her willingness to be so open and vulnerable with her own story. There's no doubt in my mind that she is doing amazing work in the world and approaching change from a very similar perspective as I do. She doesn't promise shiny objects. She promises real deal change, soul-level change, which is why I became a supportive affiliate for her work. I know you'll fall in love with her too and all her amazingly high quality, curated content available for FREE on her website. Seriously, I look at a LOT of websites and she blew me away with just how many tools she's making available for anyone who is ready to change their relationship with food. In today's episode, you'll hear Isabel's top 3 tips for creating joy in life, work, and love, which are: 1. Embrace uncertainty in life. Remember every morning that you have no idea what's going to happen. Shed yourself of expectation. Let that be a thrill. It won't all be figured out right now, and it doesn't need to be. 2. Don't resist the moment. Allow what's happening to happen. Sink in and get comfortable with whatever human experience you're having. 3. Practice the skill of enjoyment. Practice enjoyment as an active verb, rather than a passive one. With Isabel's wisdom and my curiosity, we were guided into such a beautiful, spiritual conversation. Isabel, thank you so much, Sister, for showing up so big on today's episode. I'm forever a fan! Have an amazing weekend you guys and don't forget to connect with Isabel. She's amazing! I'll see you soon for another motivational Monday

Sex positivity sounds like a wonderful thing, but do you really know what it is? As a social movement, it's older than you might think. It can be traced back through the Free Love movement. No, not the one in the 1960s: the Victorian Free Love movement. In its more modern incarnation, sex positivity has been associated with LGBTQ liberation and the battles within feminism over pornography and sex work. It's also closely tied to movements to destigmatize kink and polyamory. With all these associations, perhaps it shouldn't be surprising that not everyone agrees about what sex positivity is and what it looks like in practice. Sex positivity fills different roles for lots of people. And while, at its heart, sex positivity is an intellectual tradition, not everyone relates to it on an intellectual level. Miri Mogilevsky is a licensed therapist, a writer, and a long-time provider of sex education for adults. With articles having appeared in xoJane, Salon, and Everyday Feminism, she's a recognized resource on mental health, feminism, and consent. In recent years, she's offered a workshop at secular movement conferences titled, "Getting It On at the Con: How to Get Lucky Consensually". She's recently written about some of the common misperceptions about sex positivity, and she joins us this week to clear the air. One note: This is a show about sex. While it doesn't get graphic, it may still be inappropriate for work for other reasons, such as the swearing.

With one of my favorite stand-ups Nick Vatterott (Comedy Central Half Hour, Conan, etc.) as the first guest co-host, how could it not be fun? We were joined by former Daily Show correspondent and delightful stand-up Wyatt Cenac, xoJane Deputy Editor Mandy Stadtmiller and wonderful musical guest Xenia Rubinos for a free-ranging discussion of our guests' childhoods that covered: Ghostly Aunt Jemima, a Care Bear massacre, a lesson on re-insurance, growing up with Brian K. Vaughan, Chinese Santa Claus, Scott Peterson's water people defense, and fleeing communist Cuba. Plus, in the epilogue, I talk to adultswim.com writer Kelly Hudson about what it was like growing up in Texas.Check out our new website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes and see some live dates: the next live episode will be August 6th with Jim Norton, Bonnie McFarlane, Eric Drysdale (Colbert Report) and musical guest ARMS, and on Aug. 31st we'll be live at the Out of Bounds Festival in Austin with director Todd Rohal and more!
On today's show we talk to filmmaker Hal Hartley. Since his first feature film, 1988's The Unbelievable Truth, Hal has been creating stylistically singular narratives that are rich in deadpan humor and poetic, measured dialogue. Since then, he has explored this style further with 11 more features and garnered a number of nominations and awards from places like Sundance and Cannes. Hal is also a musician and has created the soundtracks for most of his films.A few weeks ago, Hal welcomed Mark and Andy into his apartment in the shadow of LaGuardia's flight paths to discuss space in comedy, mechanical structures vs. story structure, how directing a film is like running a construction site, and stories of Hartley family mishaps. And in the wrap-up, Andy and and his fiancee share some stories of their own mishaps. Also, check out our new website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes and see us live at the Del Close Marathon on June 29th with DC Pierson and Billy Merritt and live at UCB East on July 2nd with Wyatt Cenac, Mandy Stadtmiller (deputy editor of xoJane), musical guest Xenia Rubinos and a special guest from the world of hip hop!
We had a real blast at maybe one of my favorite live episodes that we've yet taped! A few weeks ago, we were joined by Joe Randazzo (The Onion, AdultSwim.com), Larry Livermore (founder of Lookout! Records), Jamie Lee (Girl Code, Last Comic Standing), musical guest Brother JT (Thrill Jockey, Drag City), and a special appearance buy the great Talib Kweli. Listen and enjoy! She writes for Jane and Vice.com, and last year, her book Agorafabulous!, based on her-one woman show about her struggles with agoraphobia, was published by William Morrow.Right before Christmas, we sat down with Sara at The PIT, hours before her stand-up show, and talked about everything from comedy in the wake of national tragedies, to income and privilege, to the time Andy bombed opening for Jonah Ray.
