Writer Emily Maguire on losing her own faith, but finding awe and inspiration in a controversial myth about a female pontiff who some people believe sat disguised on the papal throne for two years in the ninth century.Writer Emily Maguire grew up in a very Christian home, where life revolved around the Church and prayer.By the time she was in her late teens, Emily had well and truly rebelled against her religious upbringing, eventually dropping out of high school, getting a job at McDonalds and getting married. But it wasn't until she suffered a rare stroke in her 20s, that Emily truly lost her faith. She remained fascinated by the history and the stories of the Church, however, and has written several books inspired by that interest. Most recently, Emily was gripped by a tale that has haunted the Catholic Church for more than 1,000 years—rumours of a woman who disguised herself as a man, entered a Benedictine Monastery and rose up the ranks until she was elected the most holy ruler of all, the Pope.If she truly did exist, after two years on the papal throne, Pope Joan was found out in the most dramatic way possible. This episode of Conversations discusses Catholicism, Jesus, religion, faith, writing, books, atheism, Christianity, finding God, losing faith, agnostics, spirituality, Christian history, power, politics, Roman Empire, Constantine, Charlemagne, marriage, childless by choice, Pope Joan, female pope, female Bishop, female leadership, teenage girls, teen sexuality, rebellion, crisis of faith.

It doesn't matter how many people open your email, it only matters what they do next.  You can game the system to change your open rates, or use click bait headlines, but that won't actually help you sell more.   Engagement metrics, clicks, downloads, replies and even unsubscribes are much more reliable predictors of how well your email campaign is really performing.   LOOK FOR EMILY:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/mcguireemily/

Ceridwen Dovey and Emily Maguire shed light on their riveting new novels, both electrifying tales of trust and consequences, with Bridie Jabour. A murder mystery and study of modern manners, Ceridwen's Life After Truth tells of former Harvard classmates whose weekend reunion is rocked by the death of a fellow alumnus. Emily is a Miles Franklin Award shortlisted writer whose latest novel, Love Objects, is the insightful, compassionately drawn story of a young woman whose aunt is imperilled by compulsive hoarding. Together, the two discuss the writing process, midlife opportunities (rather than midlife crises), and the power of fiction to generate empathy. “More and more I feel that in fiction we are all rehearsing for real life...it continues to astound me that as humans we have no real way of knowing what is going on in anybody else's mind and yet we still manage to come together and try so hard to communicate between one another, there's something heartbreaking about that. And for me that's what fiction is...it's the most profound tool we have at our fingertips to get into each other's experiences.” – Ceridwen Dovey See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Emily Maguire is the author of fiction and non-fiction. Her 2016 novel An Isolated Incident garnered short list noms for the Stella Prize and the Miles Franklin. It explored the reverberations within a community around a horrific act of violence against a young woman.Maguire is a master of closely drawn character and the population of her novels feel almost like a neighbour or a workmate in the ways they jump off the page. Her latest novel Love Objects takes us into Sydney’s Inner West where Nicole has lived pretty much her entire life. It’s a modest house but Nic has always said her family has a bed there if they ever need it.Nicole hasn't had much in the way of family after her mum died and her sister moved to Brisbane. When Michelle left she took Lena, Nic’s niece.Lena and her brother Will grew up worshipping their Aunty Nic. Her house was an escape from home and she supported their every endeavour unconditionally. When Lena moved to Brisbane Nic was devastated. Now Lena’s back in Sydney studying and every Sunday she and Nic meet up for lunch. When Aunty Nic misses their date one Sunday, Lena goes in search of her aunt. Only to make a shocking discovery…It’s hard to know whether to leave this synopsis on that click baity cliffhanger. The shocking revelation is designed to garner quick response, even judgement from the reader and then complicate those initial impressions. As I mentioned earlier Emily Maguire is masterful in her realisation of character. Nic is simultaneously close and relatable, then at turns completely foreign in her thinking. MAguire’s brilliance is to bring us so close into her life that we are able to sit with the discomfort of knowing there are no easy answers for Nic in her life.A key understanding of the dynamic of Love OBjects is in the relationships between Nicole, Lena and Will. MAguire wants to explore what the ethicist Peter Singer would call our expanding circle.Within their dynamic we have a love that looks like that within the typical nuclear family (for whatever value that term still holds) Nic has always viewed Lena like a daughter and was thrilled to have her back in Sydney. The events of the novel challenge both of their perceptions of this relationship as actions are perceived as betrayals and the ties that bind start to look more tenuous. Will returns to the family after an absence that began with a stint in prison that has impacted his ability to feel at peace. Will exemplifies an open secret that becomes almost a barrier to his inclusion anywhere. Try as he might to just be, he is always vigilant that he will only be judged by a single action.I’ve skirted nicely around the central tension of Love Objects and left out some key plot points because that is a part of why we read; to be surprised and challenged by what we find on the page. Suffice to say that in its exploration of love, community and connection Love Objects is the perfect book to challenge our world as we look to a post covid normal.

Everyday Violence was part of the Write Around the Murray program for 2017. Jason Steger talks to Emily Maguire, Michael Sala and Nicole Hayes about the prevalence of violence in everyday life as depicted in their novels, and the importance of language in shifting narratives and assumptions. Recorded 16/09/2017 Write Around the Murray is an annual literary-based festival held in Albury. It brings together some of Australia's best authors and storytellers in a welcoming and relaxed environment. The diverse program includes author talks and workshops, art exhibitions, a poetry slam, writing competitions, WAM4Kids family events, and always an element of surprise. Many events are free or low cost and provide a unique opportunity for rural communities from NE Victoria, the Southern Riverina and beyond to not only listen to their favourite authors, storytellers and illustrators, but also to meet, greet and talk to them. Emotional, powerful, unforgettable. From a stunning new literary talent, you won't be able to put down this novel about a mother's love for her children - it will break your heart. Ava and her two young sons, Max and Teddy, are driving to their new home in Sheerwater, hopeful of making a fresh start in a new town, although Ava can't help but keep looking over her shoulder. They're almost at their destination when they witness a shocking accident - a light plane crashing in the field next to the road. Ava stops to help, but when she gets back to the car, she realises that somehow, among the smoke, fire and confusion, her sons have gone missing ... From a substantial new Australian writing talent, Sheerwater is tense, emotional, unforgettable. Perfect for readers of Mark Brandi's Wimmera and Stephanie Bishop's The Other Side of the World, this is a beautifully written, propulsive, gut-wrenching and unputdownable novel - an aching, powerful story of the heroic acts we are capable of in the name of love. 'Sheerwater is that rare gift of a book that balances gorgeous, glittering language with breathless pace. Leah Swann writes with devastating honesty ... This is an extraordinary novel - I tore through it, captivated by the imagery and the setting, desperately hoping for a happy ending.' Rebecca Starford, author of Bad Behavior 'With visceral prose and a tense narrative arc that unfolds over just three days, speeding towards a dramatic conclusion .... Sheerwater is a propulsive read with an acute emotional core ... likely to hold appeal for readers of both literary and crime fiction, and fans of writers such as Emily Maguire, Emma Viskic and Sofie Laguna.' Bookseller + Publisher 'Sheerwater is a haunting story built on conflict. Freedom and control, tenderness and violence, hope and fear, love and hate. It shows the strength of a mother's love and the yearning for something more ... This novel is full of beautifully gripping prose and deeply powerful emotions told through sublime pacing. I found it triggered a peculiar mix of wanting to dwell in the darkly emotive prose while needing to urgently push through it to find resolution. It will be one of those books that lingers in your mind, the memory of which may even be mistaken for a story read in the news.' Booktopia 'Sheerwater is compelling reading ... There is an urgency in the writing that makes you read on because you must know what the conclusion is - no matter which way it goes ... This is an extraordinary literary debut; the writing is beautifully evocative and the intertwining narratives of the main characters seamless. It's tender, it's suspenseful and you'll be wanting to see so much more from Leah Swann - I ignored everything for a day to rip through the pages and loved every minute of it.' Better Reading

Libby Purves meets Thomasina Lowe, daughter of President Kennedy's official photographer; actor and director Paul Michael Glaser; singer Emily Maguire and writer Harry Ritchie. Thomasina Lowe is the daughter of the late Jacques Lowe, President Kennedy's presidential campaign photographer. Jacques had unprecedented access to the personal and professional life of one of the most charismatic and powerful leaders of the 20th Century. He took over 40,000 photographs of JFK at work and with his family, showing both the public and private man. Jacques's priceless negatives, which were stored in the World Trade Center, were destroyed during the events of 9/11. His prints - which he kept at home - form the exhibition My Kennedy Years at Proud Chelsea. His memoir of the same name is published by Thames and Hudson. Paul Michael Glaser is an actor, director and writer, best known for playing David Starsky in the TV series, Starsky and Hutch. His is currently playing Tevye in a UK touring production of the musical Fiddler on the Roof, directed by Craig Revel Horwood. In addition to his work on stage and screen, Paul Michael Glaser writes poetry and children's literature. He is Honorary Chairman of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation. Fiddler on the Roof is touring the UK and Ireland. A classically-trained musician, singer Emily Maguire's song-writing was born out of adversity. In her teens she contracted fibromyalgia pain syndrome, a chronic disorder which affects the central nervous system. Her illness kept her at home where she taught herself to write songs. In her twenties Emily was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and moved to Australia to help stabilise her illness and make music. Emily's breakthrough came in 2007 when she supported Don Maclean on tour, culminating in a show at the Royal Albert Hall. Her new album, Bird Inside A Cage, is released on Shaktu Records. She is currently touring. Harry Ritchie is a writer and former literary editor of the Sunday Times. His latest book, English for the Natives, outlines the rules and structures of the English language as they are taught to foreign students. English for the Natives - Discover the Grammar You Don't Know You Know is published by John Murray. Producer: Paula McGinley.

We’ve got a fabulous show in store for you in Episode 49 of Low-Carb Conversations with Jimmy Moore & Friends with our co-hosts Jimmy Moore and Mindy Noxon Iannotti rockin’ it with two more fabulous low-carb friends. If you missed the BIG NEWS last week that we’ve decided to go to a LISTENER-SUPPORTED format with this podcast, then I wanted to invite you to  to help keep this show on the air. We were blown away by the outpouring of love and financial support after making this announcement last week and we are so grateful to each and every one of our incredible listeners who have told us how much this podcast means to them. THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts for helping us continue providing new episodes of “Low-Carb Conversations” and we’ve got another spectacular hour-long episode to share with you today! We feature a Philadelphia, PA-based Paleo fitness expert named Roger Dickerman(who Jimmy met at PaleoFX in March) from  and the Senior Nutritionist at the UK-based low-carb  company Emily Maguire who works with the incredible low-carb advocate  who Jimmy has interviewed previously on “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.” Listen in as our prestigious panel chimes in on the recent sugary soda ban in New York City, a new study that says being obese doesn’t necessarily mean you have heart health risks, a history lesson on how highly-processed omega-6-rich vegetable oils replaced natural animal fats, whether too much Vitamin D can be as problematic as too little, and the notion that once you’ve been fat people will always look at you as being fat. It’s a full slate of interesting topics for you today, so sit back, relax and enjoy the conversation! NOTE: Apologies for the “rumble” during this podcast. We had a poor Skype connection with one of our guests. THANK YOU for your understanding! LINKS MENTIONED IN EPISODE 49- We’re now LISTENER-SUPPORTED: - - - - - - - - - - -
