At what cost should the U.S. continue leading the world? The Biden Administration has indicated in its first month that it is taking a different stance regarding alliances, particularly with Europe. How will this affect transatlantic relationships? Karen Donfried, president of the German Marshall Fund of the United States, has spent the entirety of her career trying to answer questions just like these. Since first joining the German Marshall Fund in 2001, Donfried has held numerous positions within the organization, as well as in the U.S. government and the World Economic Forum. Her work in this arena was recognized with the honor of the Cross of the Order of Merit from the German government, which she received in 2011, in addition to many other awards. Karen Donfried took the helm of the German Marshall Fund in 2014 after working as a special assistant to the president and senior director for European affairs and on the National Security Council. Donfried spent time as a national intelligence officer for Europe on the National Intelligence Council and served for ten years as a European specialist at the Congressional Research Service. She holds a Ph.D. and an M.A. in laws and diplomacy from Tufts University, a magister from the University of Munich, and a B.A. in government and German from Wesleyan University. Joanna Ridgway will moderate this event. Ridgway is southwest region managing director at Santander Bank. Her international experience includes corporate and commercial banking, strategy development, asset management, corporate debt underwriting, project management and marketing. A two-time TEDx speaker, Ridgway serves on the Council’s board of directors and was a German Marshall Fund 2012 Marshall Memorial Fellow. . . Three decades ago in 1989, people in East Germany took to the streets to protest communist rule. The “Peaceful Revolution” led to the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, paving the way for German reunification the following year. But the euphoria soon wore off for many in the former East, and it's having political consequences today: eastern Germany has become the bastion of the far-right Alternative for Germany party. Karen Donfried and Jeff Gedmin join Susan and Greg to discuss the legacy of 1989 and serious challenges facing the country's political establishment today. Then ICWA fellow Emily Schultheis reports from Germany, where she speaks to young eastern Germans born in 1989 about their identity.

The Trump administration’s hard-nosed approach to the European Union has left leaders across the Atlantic questioning where the relationship with the U.S. is headed. According to GMF’s president Dr. Karen Donfried, a tour of Europe shows how the outlook on America changes based on where you sit. While the talk in Paris is all about “strategic autonomy,” Warsaw is buzzing about “strategic embrace.”   This week on Out of Order, Dr. Donfried sits down with GMF’s Peter Sparding to discuss the three strategic Europes—and what the differences in attitudes reveals about European cohesion and also the future of the transatlantic relationship. The conversation is based on an article by Dr. Donfried that appeared in Defense One earlier this year.   Article: https://www.defenseone.com/ideas/2019/04/3-ways-europe-looking-fraying-nato/155982/?oref=d-river

"Germany is the...largest economy and most populous country in the European Union...but nonetheless, Angela Merkel, Germany's Chancellor, would be the first to admit that Germany still needs the United States in 2018. This is why we are in such a fraught period in the U.S.–German and U.S.–European relationship ... [President Trump] is trying to renegotiate this relationship with Europe in a way that is deeply concerning to Germany and our other European allies." Karen Donfried sat down with Sabrina and Will to discuss serving as President Obama's senior advisor on Europe during the Snowden leaks, researching the conclusion of the Cold War in Germany, and the importance of strengthening transatlantic partnerships.
