MONEY FM 89.3 - Prime Time with Howie Lim, Bernard Lim & Finance Presenter JP Ong
It's already Friday and what better way to end the afternoon than with a good cup of coffee or Kopi. Speaking of coffee, you might have seen quite a number of new coffee chains sprouting in sunny Singapore, including several chains who have made their names in other parts of the world such as Indonesia and China. And we're going to speak to one such entrant today. Founded in 2017, Kopi Kenangan is a non-franchise tech-enabled coffee chain, where it focuses on serving coffee priced between the higher priced international brands versus the cheaper alternative sold by street vendors. Fast forward to today, the firm is also one of the fastest growing grab-and-go coffee chains in Indonesia with around 800 stores across over 60 cities in Indonesia. For one thing, the Sequoia Capital-backed startup served 30 million cups of coffee in the year of 2020 alone. It also became the first F&B Unicorn in South East Asia in December 2021, following a US$96 million Series C round to help it expand internationally. True enough, the firm entered into Malaysia and thereafter to Singapore last September. But how will the firm's positioning strategy in Singapore differ from that in Indonesia given the differences in cost structures? Also – how does the firm assess the Singapore market, as well as the recent exits of players such as Flash Coffee and Spinelli? On Under the Radar, The Evening Runway's finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to James Prananto, Co-founder and CEO, Kenangan Coffee.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
James Prananto joins the Indo Tekno podcast to discuss the origins of his collaboration with fellow Kopi Kenangan cofounder Edward Tirtanata. "We wanted to prove that our model works...but the malls and landlords only wanted to deal with the big brands" in the early days. The pair's eventual success in raising high quality VC money helped solve this and other problems, raising Kopi Kenangan's profile and legitimacy. James and associates Fandy Cendrajaya and Christian Sutardi more recently founded Kopital Ventures to leverage their expertise and networks of contacts for the latest generation of Indonesian entrepreneurs. "It also allows me to give back to the community by growing the Indonesian startup ecosystem." The most defining value-add that Kopital offers its investee founders is "the amount of time that we spend with the founders." While James has found the latest crop of Indonesian entrepreneurs much more daring than their predecessors, he urges the country's younger founders to "dream bigger".
Kopi Kenangan is rebranding itself as Kenangan Coffee as it ventures outside its Indonesian home where it already has more than 800 outlets employing some 5,000 staff. It is also Southeast Asia's first new F&B retail unicorn - all within a short space of 5 years. Its co-founder and CEO Edward Tirtanata sits down for a bit of coffee shop talk to explain what this grab & go coffee chain's plans are as it sets up shop in Malaysia first before venturing beyond.

Host Andrew Berkowitz breaks down the recent drama surrounding the rapid rise and fall of Chinese coffee startup Luckin Coffee from it's founding 3.5 years ago through it's widely successful IPO and eventual collapse on April 2, 2020 when Luckin disclosed that an internal probe found that its chief operating officer had fabricated 2019 sales by about 2.2 billion yuan ($310 million). Additionally, Andrew discusses the next in line to become Asia's coffee unicorn and most serious competitor to Starbucks in the region, Indonesia's Kopi Kenangan. On this episode you'll learn: Luckin Coffee's initial rapid growth and expansion throughout Middle East and Asia [2:00] What were the fraud allegations made by Muddy Waters Research again Luckin?[3:59] Who is Asia's next coffee startup most likely to become a regional powerhouse and compete with Starbucks?[9:55]

Organizers of the inaugural Ethiopian Cup of Excellence competition were undeterred by the onset of a global pandemic. In April 2019, Alliance for Coffee Excellence—or ACE—announced that it would run the first-ever Ethiopian Cup of Excellence program in 2020. According to Dr. Adugna Debela, Director General of the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority, the competition was held by sending coffee samples to each member of the jury rather than bringing them to Ethiopia as originally planned. Three coffees, all from the Sidama region, scored more than 90 points in the competition, each receiving the Presidential Award. All of the top 28 coffees will be sold in a record-breaking online auction on June 25. An ongoing story in coffee investments, first noted in December 2019, also came full circle this month: JAB Holdings has announced the planned initial public offering, or IPO, of JDE Peet's on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange. A combination of Jacobs Douwe Egberts and Peet's Coffee, JDE Peet's holds a sizable coffee brand portfolio across traditional roast and ground coffees as well as soluble coffee, on-demand systems, and compatible products. The impending JDE Peet's IPO confirms that, despite recent difficulties for China's Luckin Coffee, investors continue to see the potential in coffee companies to deliver profits. In another example, Kopi Kenangan, an Indonesian startup founded in 2017, has just raised US$109 million in Series B funding. As a part of the funding round, Eduardo Saverin—famously known as the co-founder of Facebook—will join Kopi Kenangan's board of directors. The company aims to provide a mid-market coffee option that celebrates Indonesian and South-east Asian flavors. As specialty coffee's popularity continues to surge in local and global markets, it's interesting to note the degree to which larger companies—like JDE Peet's, Luckin Coffee, and Kopi Kenangan—are leveraging it to engage investors. When considered in concert with the uneven distribution of the additional value specialty coffee offers on top of lower-quality products, the market's current belief in the “profitability” of specialty coffee could hamper efforts to redistribute value along the chain more equitably. And finally, as COVID-19 continues to impact coffee producers around the world, reports of government aid and agricultural support continue to make headlines. In Honduras, an unprecedented executive order has declared agroindustry support a national priority. A number of programs, including the “Presidential Coffee Bonus,” “Solidarity Productive Bonus,” and the “Family Agriculture Program” all provide financial support in different ways to small and medium coffee producers. In Uganda, coffee production was labeled “critical” in a presidential directive. With the government's support during their March lockdown, Uganda coffee exports increased by 38%. In return, the Uganda Coffee Development Authority mobilized its members to donate coffee, maize, fuel, medical equipment, and other essentials to communities in need, including frontline workers. Technology has changed the way we consume our food and beverages, and consequently, the way business players run their businesses. The rapidly penetrating online food delivery services and the rise of virtual kitchens along with traffic jams and a busy lifestyle, have paved ways for less brick-and-mortars establishments. However, not all F&B businesses have followed suit. One of them is Kopi Kenangan, the grab-and-go coffee chain that has experienced explosive growth in Jakarta's metro area and more. With co-founder Edward Tirtanata, we explore many of these issues such as bucking certain trends and where are we actually heading in terms of how we eat our food and drink our coffee. Also the environmental impact of to-go packaging and what Indonesian consumers like and dislike when it comes to F&B purchases. // This episode is sponsored by We Work.
