Brave Dynamics: Authentic Leadership Reflections

Brave Dynamics: Authentic Leadership Reflections

Gita Sjahrir, Head of Investment at BNI Ventures, and Jeremy Au discussed: 1. 109 Member 48 Ministry Cabinet Coalition: With the inauguration on October 20, 2024, President Prabowo Subianto expanded the cabinet from 34 to 48 ministries, the largest since 1966. Prabowo's coalition-building strategy is to accommodate political allies and unify the seven-party coalition behind him. They drew comparisons to Germany's coalition politics, emphasizing the importance of coordination between Indonesia's national and regional leaders for effective governance. 2. Temu Ban, TikTok & Bukalapak: In early October 2024, Indonesia banned Chinese social commerce platform Temu, similar to TikTok Shop which then had to acquire Tokopedia. The Indonesian government also requested Apple and Google to block the Temu app to prevent local downloads. Other nations, including the United States and EU, are scrutinizing Chinese exporter practices, with the US tightening tax exemptions on low-cost imports in 2023. Gita explained that while such protectionism shields MSMEs, Indonesia's core issues (e.g., complex bureaucracy, high business costs, lack of raw materials and a multi-year backlog for trademarks) remain unaddressed. She argued that easing these foundational barriers would create a fairer, more sustainable advantage for local businesses, rather than just temporary protection from foreign competition. 3. VC Investments: Indonesia has already attracted interest in green joint ventures (JVs), particularly with China. Jeremy highlighted MAKA Motors, founded by former GoJek CTO Raditya Wibowo, as a local player advancing EV production, while Gita mentioned Toba's push for renewable energy. They underscored the cultural importance of home ownership, noting that many Indonesians aspire to own land despite its often low financial returns, which drives prop-tech startup Rukita. Rekosistem is also a key startup addressing waste management in Indonesia's growing urban areas. They also discussed the pressures faced by Indonesia's “sandwich generation,” who often support both aging parents and their own families, and how these dynamics shape housing affordability and socio-economic mobility. Jeremy and Gita also talked about the film “Home Sweet Loan, which explores Indonesians' struggle with housing affordability, the influx of green investments into EV battery production and the regulatory challenges surrounding the rise of online gambling among youth. Adrian Li, Founder & Managing Partner of AC Ventures, and Jeremy Au talked about three main themes: 1. Cambridge & Stanford MBA Childhood Inspiration: Adrian shared his multicultural upbringing across Hong Kong and the UK, leading to a pivotal teenage moment where he decided to study his way into Cambridge University. He evolved from academic success towards the ambition to use technology for social and economic betterment in emerging markets due to being exposed to rural poverty while backpacking and his early career in investment banking. He also shared about how he used his Stanford MBA education to find a cofounder and begin entrepreneurship. 2. China Edtech & Rocket Internet Founder Journey: Adrian shared his personal learnings vs. mistakes in founding a China edtech venture that used innovative call center technology for English language training. He discussed navigating uncharted markets and the challenges of finding the right product-market fit. He also shared about his leadership at Rocket Internet, where he led a competitive "Airbnb" online accommodations platform in China for scaling, carving out differentiation, and executing strategic maneuvers in challenging market conditions. He highlighted the critical role of timing in entrepreneurship, noting that while being early to the market offers first-mover advantages, it also presents challenges like market education and regulatory hurdles, which significantly impact a startup's success trajectory. 3. Indonesia VC Outlook (Pure Play vs. Small-Cap Private Equity): Adrian articulated his investment vision for the transformative power of digital technology. He addressed common misconceptions about the country's tech market, particularly the belief that it's overly expensive for investors - and argued that higher valuations are justified by Indonesia's vast market potential and the opportunity for significant business growth. He also discussed Indonesia's tech investment evolution from the 2010-2021 internet boom where pure-play tech platforms like Tokopedia, Gojek and Traveloka grew from modest valuations into multibillion-dollar enterprises, to the current focus on digital transformation in the real economy. In this episode, Shiyan Koh, Managing Partner of Hustle Fund, and Jeremy Au talked about three main topics: 1. $1.5B Bytedance Tokopedia GoTo Deal Analysis: They discussed ByteDance's $500 million payment to acquire a 75% stake in the merged entity of Tokopedia and TikTok Shop Indonesia. This would create the new Indonesia e-commerce market leader with 40% market share. ByteDance committed to investing a future $1 billion into the operations of the new entity, which will contractually not dilute GoTo's 25% minority stake. The deal was motivated by TikTok's need to resume its Indonesia operations after a ban by the Indonesia government, Tokopedia's -0.4% adjusted EBITDA as % of GTV (Q3 2023), and the opportunity to create the #1 Indonesia e-commerce platform with larger economies of scale, a new media-led growth engine and a wider seller base. 2. Indonesia E-Commerce War: They discussed Indonesia's $52B e-commerce market: Shopee (36% market share), Tokopedia (35%), Lazada (10%), Bukalapak (10%), TikTok Shop (5%), and Blibli (4%). They explained how this consolidation reflects the regional trend of increasing focus on efficiency, logistics, and leveraging technological synergies to gain dominance, similar to Uber Southeast Asia's strategic sale to Grab to concentrate on core markets. Credit goes to Momentum Works and Freeman Ding for their analysis. 3. Winners, Losers, and Future Moves: They identified Indonesian consumers as clear winners due to continued intensive competition on lower prices and innovation in services, similar to the Uber vs. Grab vs. Gojek rivalry. They also discussed other beneficiaries, how this reflected the growing maturation of the region for M&A activity, and how competitors like Grab and Sea Group would react to this market development. Shiyan and Jeremy also talked about the challenges of founders fundraising during the holiday season and their own upcoming family vacation plans.

Earlier this month Indonesia government data showed the country's GDP grew at an annualized rate of 5.2 per cent during the three months to June 30. It's a rate of growth that would be the envy of most big economies not least because it has so far avoided triggering rapid price inflation while paralleling an overall improvement in government services. The state of the economy has helped support a generally sunny outlook among Indonesia's voters and their favorable views of their outgoing  president, Joko Widodo, who is enjoying stratospheric approval ratings as a result. Widodo's support is so robust that a nod from him to one of the three likely contenders vying to replace him may go a long way toward securing the top job. But it's a not an episode of Reformasi Dispatch without a healthy dose of skepticism and this case is no different. Investment ought to be playing a much bigger role in driving Indonesia's growth.  And while 5.2% is nice, GDP really should be growing at something closer to 7 per cent -- unseen in post Suharto-era Indonesia -- to soak up surplus labour and boost wages. For the second week in a row, there isn't too much explosive news for us to dissect, but that's not to say that the world of tech, business and innovation has been quiet by any standard. Join us as we dissect ride hailing and e-commerce giant GoTo's decision to launch a standalone GoPay app in Indonesia, Tiktok Shop's recent developments, and cross border tensions as the US imposes a ban on tech investment in China.   How do WeChat and AliPay differ? One is a social app with payment, and the other is a payment app with other functions. GoTo is tapping into a middle ground here with the creation of their standalone GoPay app which will operate as an e-wallet on its own, potentially allowing for consumers to engage in payment outside of the GoTo ecosystem. This app will take up less space than Gojek and Tokopedia do, and aims to tap into the customer base that may not have ride hailing, food delivery or e-commerce needs per se, but still have interest in an e-wallet.   Next, we take another look at TikTok Shop. A couple weeks ago we did an in-depth look at TikTok Shop, and today we have some updates and new perspectives for you. How are brands viewing TikTok Shop in comparison to traditional e-commerce platforms like Shopee? Should TikTok invest in their own logistics set up, or continue to rely on third party solutions? Find out this and more on today's episode.   To end on a light note (pure sarcasm here), we take a brief look at US-China relations, and how they are developing in light of the White House signaling a ban or severe restriction on tech investment going into China from the US. While the motives appear to be security related, the knock on effect is yet to be seen, as are any retaliatory measures that will be imposed by Beijing.   Stay tuned for Wednesday's in-depth episode on food delivery platforms!

In this podcast, we dive deep into the intertwined stories of major regional and country-focused players such as Shopee, Lazada, Temu, Tiktokshop, Tokopedia, Bukalapak, Tiki, and Sendo. Discover how these companies are engaging with each other and the strategies they employ to secure their positions in this fiercely competitive market. First, we uncover the influence of Alibaba's restructuring on Lazada, one of the region's leading players. With a new structure that provides autonomy to individual units while ensuring accountability, Lazada is poised to navigate the hyper-competitive market environment. We delve into the leadership dynamics between Jiang Fan, known for his ability to drive results in complex environments, and James Dong, a seasoned professional manager. Discover how Lazada's odds have improved but how it still faces challenges in this rapidly evolving landscape. Next, we examine Shopee's remarkable journey of restarting growth and achieving profitability. Explore how Shopee shifted its focus back to its core ecommerce business, strengthened its financial ecosystem to boost conversion rates, and embarked on radical cost optimization measures. However, the challenges faced by Shopee in sustaining profitability while reigniting growth, including internal issues related to people, organization, and products, raise intriguing questions. We also explore the potential arrival of Temu in Southeast Asia, as they flirt with the idea of expanding their presence. By examining the survey conducted by Temu among sellers in Southeast Asia, Japan, and Korea, we analyze the platforms they currently use and how the entry of Temu could impact existing players like Lazada, Shopee, Tokopedia, and others. We discuss the survival strategies of single-country platforms, the role of local know-how, and the possibilities of differentiation in a region dominated by well-resourced regional rivals. Noureddine Tayebi is a High Tech phD, Entrepreneur, Investor, CoFounder and CEO of YASSIR, a leading startup for on demand services, such as ride hailing, food and groceries delivery. Yassir started in 2017 in Algeria and rapidly has developed presence in the Maghreb Region and internationally, today serving 8 million users, 45 cities and improving the lives of 100,000 partners including drivers, couriers, merchants, suppliers, and wholesalers. After a series B in October 2022 of 150 millions USD with a total capital raised of 195 millions dollars, Yassir is one of the most valued and funded startups in North Africa and the Middle East. The startup is on a wild journey to build the biggest everyday super app in the Maghreb and french-speaking region in west Africa, moving people, packages, food, money and more. In this process Yassir will have to morph into a Fintech starting by handling payment services. Noureddine was born and raised in Algeria up to an engineering degree. He acknowledges that his drives and values around ambition, confidence and resilience were unconsciously nurtured  in his childhood through his parent's stories  "The values that you have will define your impact ! "   Thanks to a bold support from his family and a scholarship, he went to the United States to pursue further studies and got a PHD from Stanford University, the birth place of the silicon valley and high-tech industry. A lifetime changing experience with key learnings on high-tech engineering and on how a thriving mindset can be empowered by the ecosystem. So that since Noureddine likes mixing his engineering thinking with social sciences   "For an ecosystem to work, you must have a strong value system anchored : ambition, perseverance, creativity and rising by helping others "    "Culture is a value system that you have as a primary capital and you use in a subconscious way !"   " Stanford Mindset :  I am going to be pursuing something that will make you forget everything else !"  Later working in Intel's Labs Division on start-up like projects, from research ideas to sales and funding, he went confidently from there to start his own Entrepreneur journey, having seen the potential impact one can create on teams and people. Relating to his values, he is pursuing with Yassir and his cofounder a desire to contribute personally and more efficiently to the development of his birth region, by building a regional champion and inspiring the high-tech ecosystem to flourish, where he clearly points out the lack of values, mindset and best practices as the biggest problems for local Entrepreneurs.  On this journey, he is holding in mind the similar model of Diaspora members around the world bringing back to their region of birth, knowledge, expertise and mindset, therefore enabling the emergence of local champions such as : Tencent, Grab,  Tokopedia, Nubank    As a super App, Yassir form day one is build on the strategy to address the unbanked potential in the region and leverage technology and customer's confidence offering seamless access to necessary everyday on demand services  " To have a product Market-Fit , solve a problem where you have a necessity. You will have adoption even if you don't have a great product. Raise money and come back to improve the product "   Noureddine emphasizes in Yassir's growth model in a highly competitive landscape the critical importance of implementing a business with sound economics, to build a profitable business Yassir is pursuing a strategy of attracting the engineering talent in Europe that identify with the mission by opening R&D hubs in Alger, Paris and Berlin. The startup also is on the mission to empower local talents in each country it operates, being one of the largest employers of software developers in the Region with up to 400 people so far.  Noureddine recommends these two readings on Entrepreneurship :  Only the paranoid survive by Andrew Grove The Hard things about hard things by Ben Horowitz

In this episode, Jay and Theo are joined by Herman Widjaja, CTO at leading marketplace platform Tokopedia, to learn more about its culture of customer-focused innovation. Tokopedia's recent merger with Southeast Asia's leading mobile on-demand services and payments platform Gojek to form the GoTo group, made headlines as Indonesia's largest business deal. 13 years ago, Tokopedia's two founders set out to solve the problem of transparent pricing for Indonesians, regardless which of the 17,000 islands they may live on, while also helping merchants to be successful without relocating to Jakarta. Today, 12+ million merchants use the platform to sell 638+ million products. Herman outlines six priorities for Tokopedia's technology team over the next two years. These include strengthening the platform, increasing security and privacy, focussing on consumer technology innovation, AI-first and data driven transformation, financially optimized execution, and ultimately, building a world-class technology organization. Platform stability, reliability and quality are of maximum importance for Tokopedia. While five minutes of downtime might only shave a tiny fraction of a percent off the platform's uptime record, every second has an impact on the lives of customers and the income of merchants. Tokopedia is also keen on expanding their use of AI and ML to solve problems and provide more powerful data-driven features for customers and merchants. Central to Tokopedia's vision is customer empathy. Every new feature or build is guided by the question 'What's in it for the customer?' Herman talks about how this has led to a cultural shift within the technology team that doesn't seek to simply deliver on a PRD or BRD. By talking to customers and understanding their pain points, the team reveals new opportunities for innovation that solve genuine problems.
