Kucuran investasi pun anjlok. Gita Sjahrir, Head of Investment at BNI Ventures, and Jeremy Au discussed: 1. 109 Member 48 Ministry Cabinet Coalition: With the inauguration on October 20, 2024, President Prabowo Subianto expanded the cabinet from 34 to 48 ministries, the largest since 1966. Prabowo's coalition-building strategy is to accommodate political allies and unify the seven-party coalition behind him. They drew comparisons to Germany's coalition politics, emphasizing the importance of coordination between Indonesia's national and regional leaders for effective governance. 2. Temu Ban, TikTok & Bukalapak: In early October 2024, Indonesia banned Chinese social commerce platform Temu, similar to TikTok Shop which then had to acquire Tokopedia. The Indonesian government also requested Apple and Google to block the Temu app to prevent local downloads. Other nations, including the United States and EU, are scrutinizing Chinese exporter practices, with the US tightening tax exemptions on low-cost imports in 2023. Gita explained that while such protectionism shields MSMEs, Indonesia's core issues (e.g., complex bureaucracy, high business costs, lack of raw materials and a multi-year backlog for trademarks) remain unaddressed. She argued that easing these foundational barriers would create a fairer, more sustainable advantage for local businesses, rather than just temporary protection from foreign competition. 3. VC Investments: Indonesia has already attracted interest in green joint ventures (JVs), particularly with China. Jeremy highlighted MAKA Motors, founded by former GoJek CTO Raditya Wibowo, as a local player advancing EV production, while Gita mentioned Toba's push for renewable energy. They underscored the cultural importance of home ownership, noting that many Indonesians aspire to own land despite its often low financial returns, which drives prop-tech startup Rukita. Rekosistem is also a key startup addressing waste management in Indonesia's growing urban areas. They also discussed the pressures faced by Indonesia's “sandwich generation,” who often support both aging parents and their own families, and how these dynamics shape housing affordability and socio-economic mobility. Jeremy and Gita also talked about the film “Home Sweet Loan, which explores Indonesians' struggle with housing affordability, the influx of green investments into EV battery production and the regulatory challenges surrounding the rise of online gambling among youth. According to a report by Charities Aid Foundation, Indonesia is considered the world's most generous nations. Kitabisa Co-founder and CEO Vikra Ijas attributes Indonesia's global leadership in giving over the past six years to "religious and cultural influences" that have shaped "a very collectivist society." Kitabisa is Indonesia's largest online crowdfunding platform for social and personal medical causes. The company last year acquired a life insurance company, largely as an extension to its Saling Jaga offering (trans. "protecting each other), which is a mutual aid program where members can protect each from critical illness. Vikraan, an Endeavor Entrepreneur, explains the diversification as a move beyond crowd-funding, which is "limited to a more reactive or responsive type of aid," to becoming "more strategic and prepared for future risks, which is facilitated license-wise through insurance." Kitabisa currently facilitates roughly one donation every second, and is moreover now emerging into one of the country's fastest-growing digital life insurance platforms. Vikra also reflects on the persistent guidance and support that Kitabisa's board members have offered the company, particularly e-commerce platform Bukalapak co-founders Achmad Zaky and Fajrin Rasyid.
In this discussion, Fandy Cendrajaya, Founding Partner of Kopital Ventures, and Jeremy Au talked about three main themes: 1. Indonesia Bear vs. Bull Market: Fandy talked about Indonesia's evolving market sentiment from the bullish 2020-2021 to the more cautious investor sentiment in from 2022 to 2024. He shared the importance of being realistic in comparing Indonesia vs. benchmark startups in larger markets like India, China, and the US. He also explained the nuances of the local tech ecosystem across commodity-based growth, consumer-driven trends, and localization requirements. 2. Founding Kopital Ventures: Fandy described building Kopital Ventures with his cofounder who shared the same vision and complementary skill sets. He explained their LP fundraising approach by emphasizing their seed-only investments without follow-on funding, allowing them to collaborate with other VCs. 3. Tough Startup Exits & Strategy: Fandy emphasized the scarcity of significant exit opportunities for startups in Southeast Asia, which affects how VCs should both invest and counsel their portfolio companies. He talked about the IPO and stock performance of startups GoTo, Grab, and Bukalapak on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), and how this local listing approach contrasts with the US IPO strategy. He underscored why founders should therefore be more thoughtful and agile in their exit strategies, thus setting benchmarks for valuations and investor expectations better. Jeremy and Fandy also discussed the importance of looking at company valuation comparables, the nuances of angel investing, and the significance of empathy in working with founders. In this episode, Shiyan Koh, Managing Partner of Hustle Fund, and Jeremy Au talked about three main topics: 1. $1.5B Bytedance Tokopedia GoTo Deal Analysis: They discussed ByteDance's $500 million payment to acquire a 75% stake in the merged entity of Tokopedia and TikTok Shop Indonesia. This would create the new Indonesia e-commerce market leader with 40% market share. ByteDance committed to investing a future $1 billion into the operations of the new entity, which will contractually not dilute GoTo's 25% minority stake. The deal was motivated by TikTok's need to resume its Indonesia operations after a ban by the Indonesia government, Tokopedia's -0.4% adjusted EBITDA as % of GTV (Q3 2023), and the opportunity to create the #1 Indonesia e-commerce platform with larger economies of scale, a new media-led growth engine and a wider seller base. 2. Indonesia E-Commerce War: They discussed Indonesia's $52B e-commerce market: Shopee (36% market share), Tokopedia (35%), Lazada (10%), Bukalapak (10%), TikTok Shop (5%), and Blibli (4%). They explained how this consolidation reflects the regional trend of increasing focus on efficiency, logistics, and leveraging technological synergies to gain dominance, similar to Uber Southeast Asia's strategic sale to Grab to concentrate on core markets. Credit goes to Momentum Works and Freeman Ding for their analysis. 3. Winners, Losers, and Future Moves: They identified Indonesian consumers as clear winners due to continued intensive competition on lower prices and innovation in services, similar to the Uber vs. Grab vs. Gojek rivalry. They also discussed other beneficiaries, how this reflected the growing maturation of the region for M&A activity, and how competitors like Grab and Sea Group would react to this market development. Shiyan and Jeremy also talked about the challenges of founders fundraising during the holiday season and their own upcoming family vacation plans. Join us as we explore the dynamic landscape of the region, where key players are vying for dominance and strategic positioning in the ever-evolving ecommerce sector. In this podcast, we dive deep into the intertwined stories of major regional and country-focused players such as Shopee, Lazada, Temu, Tiktokshop, Tokopedia, Bukalapak, Tiki, and Sendo. Discover how these companies are engaging with each other and the strategies they employ to secure their positions in this fiercely competitive market. First, we uncover the influence of Alibaba's restructuring on Lazada, one of the region's leading players. With a new structure that provides autonomy to individual units while ensuring accountability, Lazada is poised to navigate the hyper-competitive market environment. We delve into the leadership dynamics between Jiang Fan, known for his ability to drive results in complex environments, and James Dong, a seasoned professional manager. Discover how Lazada's odds have improved but how it still faces challenges in this rapidly evolving landscape. Next, we examine Shopee's remarkable journey of restarting growth and achieving profitability. Explore how Shopee shifted its focus back to its core ecommerce business, strengthened its financial ecosystem to boost conversion rates, and embarked on radical cost optimization measures. However, the challenges faced by Shopee in sustaining profitability while reigniting growth, including internal issues related to people, organization, and products, raise intriguing questions. We also explore the potential arrival of Temu in Southeast Asia, as they flirt with the idea of expanding their presence. By examining the survey conducted by Temu among sellers in Southeast Asia, Japan, and Korea, we analyze the platforms they currently use and how the entry of Temu could impact existing players like Lazada, Shopee, Tokopedia, and others. We discuss the survival strategies of single-country platforms, the role of local know-how, and the possibilities of differentiation in a region dominated by well-resourced regional rivals. Ultimately, we consider whether Southeast Asia's individual country markets are large enough to support differentiation and if offline execution holds the key to success. Engage with thought-provoking discussions as we unravel the complexities of the business battle in Southeast Asia's tech industry. Last year saw the incredible reversal of fortunes of high-profile Southeast Asia tech start-ups. At the end of 2022, the combined market cap of Grab, GoTo and BukaLapak fell by USD51 billion, a far cry from the lofty valuations the trio commanded when they each made their IPO debuts. How might 2023 play out for the regional tech sector - can companies reverse the decline in share price and improve prospects? Bukalapak is an Indonesian e-commerce company founded in 2010 as an online marketplace to facilitate online commerce for small and medium enterprises. Bukalapak began as an Amazon-like online bazaar that sells physical goods to digital products, such as mobile data, electricity tokens, game vouchers, as well financial services including mutual funds and gold investments. Bukalapak has since expanded to servicing mom-and-pop shops, or warungs, to improve their sales by selling their wares online. The platform, called Mitra Bukalapak, enables warungs to offer virtual products to customers who aren't connected to the internet. Leave us a Review! Siapa nih yang gak sabar nunggu Bukalapak IPO? Nah sebelum beli sahamnya, yuk kenalan dulu sama CEO Bukalapak yaitu Rachmat Kaimuddin. Simak kisah selengkapnya di episode berikut ini ya :)
"I'm still bullish Indonesia" declares returning podcast guest David Halpert, Founder of Prince Street Capital. A buyer of Amazon at around $8 when it pulled back in the 2000 crisis, David views Indonesia's private and publicly listed technology leaders as built-to-last, and sees longer term buying opportunities emerging amidst the ongoing correction. David is encouraged by recent messaging from the likes of Uber's CEO, demanding a "seismic shift" in thinking toward profitability. He in this vein hopes to see within Indonesia a cessation in hyper-competition amongst players such as GoTo, Grab, Bukalapak and Sea Limited. David also agrees with Y Combinator's recent advice to early stage tech companies to cut their expenses and focus on extending their runways. "Don't talk about TAM", he urges Indo founders. "Don't talk about GMV. Don't even talk about revenue...try talking about profit".
GoTo Group, the new entity formed through the Gojek-Tokopedia merger last year, listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange this month. Bukalapak in August became Indonesia's first ever locally listed tech unicorn. Its robust revenue growth in its first reported quarter as a public company offers a compelling alternative narrative to characterizations of destructive hyper-competition across the country's e-commerce industry. Company President Teddy Oetomo points out that tier 2-4 cities, where its "Mitra Bukalapak" service dominates by serving micro and small-sized offline merchants, is actually where a majority of Indonesia's commerce occurs.

Founded in 2010, Bukalapak initially had trouble raising funds because “nobody wanted to invest,” co-founder and former CEO Achmad Zaky said during a fireside chat at the Tech in Asia Conference in 2019. He even considered closing the business after its first year, but he persevered instead and Bukalapak became a unicorn around eight years after its launch. Last week, the ecommerce player notched another milestone: It went public on the Indonesia Stock Exchange – the first unicorn to do so – boosting its valuation to approximately US$7.5 billion. On this episode of Deep Dive, Tech in Asia's Aditya Hadi Pratama and Simon Huang discuss the early days of Bukalapak, dive into the numbers behind its landmark initial public offering, and posit what's in store for the company's future.
