CAVA is crushing, Luckin Coffee is officially stateside, and ‘uncertainty' is the word of the year

On this week's Extra Serving, NRN editor in chief Sam Oches and executive editor Alicia Kelso talk about the trend of international brands growing into the U.S., which included the first U.S. opening of Luckin Coffee last week (the Chinese coffee chain has 23,000 locations globally). Will Luckin, tea concept Chagee, and other international brands like Jollibee find success with U.S. consumers even as domestic brands struggle? Then they discuss two significant earnings reports from the week: CAVA, which continues to defy the odds with a 10.8% sales increase, and Jack in the Box, which joined fellow burger chains on the struggle bus with a 4.4% sales drop. What can we learn about the state of the American restaurant industry based on these results? Then they talk about the word of the year, “uncertainty,” which has been brought up by dozens of restaurant executives during earnings season just two quarters after barely registering a blip. What's with all the uncertainty, and is there reason for hope? Finally, we share a conversation between senior food and beverage editor Bret Thorn and Brad Bergaus, corporate chef and director of menu innovation at Taco John's. Chinese food and beverage brands are expanding in Southeast Asia, offering alternatives to American chains like Starbucks and McDonald's. The Mixue Group has become the largest food and beverage chain globally by outlet count, with over 45,000 stores, including more than 2,600 in Indonesia. The brand provides affordable items, such as a $1.10 cup of brown sugar milk tea. By December, over 6,100 Chinese food and beverage outlets opened in Southeast Asia, focusing on India and Vietnam, with significant presence in Singapore and Malaysia. Many Chinese brands, such as Haidilao hotpot and Luckin Coffee, utilize automation and effective online marketing, enhancing local partnerships. Investments like Siya Han's $1.37 million in Mixue have shown quick profitability in many locations. Customers respond positively to the variety and quality of offerings from these Chinese brands, marking a shift in perceptions of Chinese products. Adriel Yong, Orvel Venture Partner, and Jeremy Au discussed: How eFishery Fooled Investors: They examined the elaborate scheme that allowed eFishery to inflate revenue and mislead major investors. They broke down the warning signs, such as financial irregularities, CFO departure (similar to Zilingo failure signal) and too-good-to-be-true business model that were ignored until it was too late. Informal Business Practices: They discussed how informal business practices in Indonesia contribute to the perpetuation of fraud by senior executives. Adriel shared stories of where kickbacks, inflated supplier numbers, and fraudulent financial reporting were common. They noted that many investors struggle with due diligence in Southeast Asia because operational transparency is often low, and cash-based businesses make fraud harder to detect. They contrasted the startup environment with family-owned businesses, where profitability and dividend payouts serve as stronger incentives for financial discipline. Jeremy explored why foreign founders often exit Indonesia due to ethical dilemmas. Agritech Future: With eFishery's implosion leaving a gap in the market, they analyzed whether competitors will rise or if investor confidence in the sector has been permanently damaged. They debated whether eFishery can stage a recovery similar to Luckin Coffee in China, or whether the board will write off the investment. They acknowledged the chilling effect the scandal has already had on future investments in Indonesia, agritech and Southeast Asia. Jeremy and Adriel also discussed prior fraud cases, ethical business executives and board governance. China’s Luckin Coffee is the nation’s top coffee retailer, overtaking even Starbucks. That would be notable itself, but less than four years ago the company filed for bankruptcy, making its comeback even more unlikely. The turnaround is in part thanks to the chain’s automated stores, cut-price deals and innovative drinks that appeal to local tastes. Today on The Big Take Asia, host K. Oanh Ha speaks with Bloomberg’s Rachel Chang on how Luckin managed to turn around its failing business to overtake Starbucks, and asks whether it can hold on to its success as coffee takes off in China, and more rivals emerge. Jianggan Li, Founder & CEO of Momentum Works, and Jeremy Au discussed: 1. Singles' Day 11/11 eCommerce: Jianggan shared his recent immersion trip to Hangzhou, where he observed China's vibrant e-commerce and live commerce sectors. With Singles' Day on November 11 approaching, he noted how this biggest shopping holiday in China has influenced shopping behaviors across Southeast Asia. Major platforms like Lazada and Shopee now promote Singles' Day regionally and have inspired monthly events like 10.10 and 9.9 sales, reflecting how Chinese shopping culture has permeated the region's markets. These frequent sales resonate with local consumers, and the rise of “payday promotions” as SEA brands continually invent new reasons to engage consumers between big sale events. This trend has raised demand for popular Chinese products, which occasionally leads to counterfeit goods, such as longjing "dragon well" tea.. He also highlights a visit to a logistics center in China, where human workers sort 3.5 million parcels daily, which rise to 8 million at peak periods, significantly contrasting Southeast Asia's relatively lower volume. 2. Trump vs. BRICS & Exporters: Reflecting on the US-China trade war, they outlined how supply chain shifts began during the 2016 Trump administration when tariffs on Chinese exports pushed some manufacturers to relocate to Vietnam and Cambodia. Although challenging, this diversification trend was essential for reducing tariff exposure and mitigating political risk. Chinese founders had to overcome frauds and scams in these frontier markets. The recent BRICS summit, with Southeast Asian nations like Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand joining as partners, highlights a shift toward a multi-polar economic strategy. A handshake between Xi Jinping and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the summit indicated efforts to ease border tensions while China maintained its role as India's largest trading partner. 3. Singapore Suzhou Industrial Parks & Hangzhou: They examined the role of regional industrial parks, with a focus on the Suzhou Industrial Park, a collaboration with Singapore that set a model for attracting FDI and spurred local development. Both Jiangsu (Suzhou) and Zhejiang (Hangzhou) provinces now lead China's wealthiest regions, each with a GDP per capita of about $20,000, double the national average. Suzhou's FDI-driven approach contrasts with Zhejiang's privatized clusters, where private entrepreneurs, such as those in Yiwu, naturally formed their own industries. This economic contrast highlights how both regions have fostered complementary ecosystems, with distinct founder “vibes” reflecting diverse business cultures. Jeremy and Jianggan also discussed why China is holding off on a fiscal stimulus till America's election results, how Singaporean brands are entering America's “affordable luxury” niches which align with America's higher GDP per capita, and the expansion of Chinese brands like Luckin Coffee and Chagee into the US market. === Jianggan Li is the Founder & CEO of Momentum Works, a Singapore-headquartered venture outfit. Prior to founding Momentum Works, he co-founded Easy Taxi in Asia, and served as Managing Director of Foodpanda. He is also the co-author of the book Seeing the Unseen: Behind Chinese Tech Giants' Global Venturing. He holds an MBA from INSEAD and a degree in Computer Engineering from Nanyang Technological University. Ever wondered who started the reusable coffee cup revolution? We're chatting with none other than Abigail Forsyth, the Co-Founder and Managing Director of KeepCup. In 2007, after introducing reusable soup mugs at her café, Abi and her brother decided to create their own reusable coffee cup. The now-iconic KeepCup is found in over 75 countries, diverting millions of disposable cups from landfill every day. In today's episode, Abi schools Rohan and Kirk on the environmental impact of single-use cups. But here's the big question: How do you run an eco-friendly business while still selling products? Wouldn't the most sustainable option be no takeaways at all? We dive into the unfair blame placed on consumers when it comes to waste, and shift the focus toward the larger players (I'm looking at you Amazon). Plus, we explore adding surcharges to single-use cups, the impact of COVID on coffee culture, and the deflating social mood towards eco-friendly products (just let us die).  Oh, and Abigail's latest venture? Well, we may have to bleep that out!  We also touch on the boys' personal gripes—like Myki inspectors and people who order coffee while wearing headphones. Oh, and we always make time for a bit of Seinfeld talk, along with the mysterious disappearance of Kirk's Darth Vader KeepCup. In coffee news: Chinese coffee giant Luckin Coffee has just opened its 20,000th store, doubling its locations in just over a year. And El Salvador's President, Nayib Bukele, has launched a high-end coffee brand called Bean of Fire. Random? We think so too! There's so much more but you're just going to have to listen to find out.  If you're new here (welcome), our show dives into some of the best coffee conversations on the internet, but we will always remind ourselves at the end of the day; It's Just Coffee! Huge thankyou to Abigail for such a great conversation.  Explore KeepCup at: @keepcup https://au.keepcup.com/ Want more coffee content? Both are watching as several aggressive upstarts, notably Luckin Coffee, have grown rapidly with low-priced coffee. We talk about that competition and what it means for the market there. China's Luckin Coffee is the nation's top coffee retailer, overtaking even Starbucks. That would be notable itself, but less than 4 years ago the company filed for bankruptcy, making its comeback even more unlikely. The turnaround is in part thanks to the chain's automated stores, cut-price deals and innovative drinks that appeal to local tastes. Today on The Big Take Asia, host K. Oanh Ha speaks with Bloomberg's Rachel Chang on how Luckin managed to turn around its failing business to overtake Starbucks, and asks whether it can hold on to its success as coffee takes off in China, and more rivals emerge. Manner Coffee, one of China's most popular domestic coffee brands, apologized on Friday night after a series of conflicts involving baristas and customers whose patience waned after waiting too long for their orders. The coffee chain vowed to reduce the waiting time and pay more attention to its baristas after overwhelming criticism over its intense workload placed on its employees. We are deeply sorry for the recently conflict between our baristas and clients…the company is highly concerned about those incidents and apologized to our customers as soon as possible in addition to speaking to the barista," Manner Coffee said in a statement on Friday.“对公司近日发生咖啡师伙伴与顾客冲突事件深表歉意。了解到相关情况后,公司高度重视,第一时间向顾客致歉,也对当事咖啡师伙伴进行了安抚。”Manner咖啡于6月21日晚的微博声明中表示。The statement came after three fights between baristas and impatient clients in recent weeks. In one of its outlets in coffee-addicted Shanghai on Monday, a customer expressed her dissatisfaction with waiting for too long and threatened to file a complaint. The female staff member, seemingly overwhelmed, lost her composure and poured coffee grounds on the face of the customer while shouting, "Go ahead, complain!" 随后女店员不知所措,情绪失控后将咖啡粉泼向顾客并说:“你去投诉吧!”Manner Coffee later confirmed that the female employee involved in the incident had been dismissed. In a separate incident on the same day, a customer complained about the long wait time for their order, and when the staff member suggested canceling the order, it ignited dissatisfaction among customers, culminating in a verbal dispute and a physical altercation. The police intervened, the staff member has apologized to the customer, and they have reached a settlement. The incident has sparked heated discussion on social media as many questioned whether the rapid expansion of Manner Coffee is at the sacrifice of its baristas. “Manner咖啡员工与顾客发生争执”在社交媒体上引发激烈的讨论,许多人质疑Manner咖啡的快速扩张是否是以牺牲其咖啡师为代价的。In one of the most liked comments under Manner Coffee's statement on Sina Weibo, a comment reads like: Manner is growing fast. Increase employee's salary; arrange time reasonably and increase work staff, all those costs yet they help long-term development. Hopefully Manner don't be short-sighted. Manner Coffee has rapidly expanded in recent years and currently has 1,295 company operated stores nationwide, according to media reports. It is often referred as strong rivalry of Starbucks in China due to its growing popularity and cheaper price. However, media also reported that Manner allocates staff according to the performance of the store. For daily sales below 5,000 yuan ($688), only one person is assigned to the store, while for daily sales of 6,000 yuan and above, two people are assigned. In comparison, Starbuck, Luckin Coffee and other coffee chains in China normally allocate three to four people at the store, according to Jiemian. In the statement issued on Friday, Manner Coffee said it will optimize store operation arrangements to minimize customer waiting time; and enhance customer satisfaction. Moreover, it vowed to strengthen daily care for baristas, keep communication channels open for baristas, improve their work comfort, and pay attention to their health.6月21日发表的声明中,Manner咖啡表示将“优化门店运营安排,尽可能减少顾客等待时间,提升顾客服务满意度”。 baristan.

Labor Market payrolls Nonfarm payrolls increased by 175,000 in the month of April. While this was well below the estimate of 240,000, this may actually be a big positive. Having that type of growth still shows the labor market is on good footing, but to combat the Fed's inflation concerns it's nice to see a labor market that is not too hot. Previous revisions also weren't major considering March was revised up by 12,000 to a gain of 315,000 and February was revised lower by 34,000 to a gain of 236,000. Areas of strength included health care and social assistance (+87K), transportation and warehousing (+20.1K), and retail trade (+20.1K). Some areas actually saw minor losses including mining and logging (-3K), professional and business services (-4K), and information (-8K). With wage inflation being a major concern, I'd say the biggest data point was average hourly earnings growth of 3.9% missed the expectation of 4.0%. This was a decline from March's reading of 4.1% and actually marked the lowest reading since the Fed starting hiking interest rates in 2022. Overall, I was quite pleased with the job numbers as I believe it shows a cooling labor market that remains healthy.   Job Openings At the end of March job openings totaled 8.5 million. This missed the estimate of 8.7 million and was lower compared to the previous month's reading of 8.8 million. Compared to last year, job openings were down 1.1 million. While this all sounds like bad news, I believe this is a positive. To start, pre-covid we had never seen a reading of over 8 million job openings, which means there is still plenty of available work for those that are looking. Also, when there were too many available jobs it created more competition for workers, which many times leads to wage pressures and in theory puts pressure on inflation. The labor market has remained resilient, but I believe we need to continue to see some softening to assist with inflationary concerns. This report came after the employment cost index spooked markets as it rose 1.2% in the first three months of the year versus an expectation of 1%. Compared to last year's first quarter, wages and benefits rose 4.2%, which matched Q4's reading and is off the multidecade high of 5.1% in 2022. Wages make up about 70% of employment costs and they increased 4.3% compared to last year, while benefit costs increased 3.7%. One other note to consider is that union workers saw a larger increase than non-union employees in the quarter. As we lap the impact from the union negotiations that concluded late last year, we will likely see a smaller increase from union jobs in the report.   Microsoft and OpenAI I'm very curious to see how lawsuits against Microsoft and OpenAI over copyright infringement play out. Late last year the New York Times announced a lawsuit and now eight newspaper publishers in California, Colorado, Illinois, Florida, Minnesota, and New York have claimed Microsoft and OpenAI used millions of their articles without payment or permission. All eight publishers fall under the ownership of hedge fund Alden Global Capital and include names like the Denver Post, Chicago Tribune, and the New York Daily News. “The current GPT-4 LLM will output near-verbatim copies of significant portions of the publishers' works when prompted to do so,” the complaint said. It also showed several examples of ChatGPT and the Copilot allegedly doing so. If these companies are able to win, I worry it could open the floodgates and other content providers could then claim the same infractions. ChatGPT also received more bad news with competitor Anthropic announcing its first enterprise offering and a free iPhone app. Anthropic was founded by ex-OpenAI research executives and has backers that include Amazon, Google, and Salesforce. Its Claude 3 model can reportedly summarize up to about 150,000 words and convert the large data sets into summaries in the form of a memo, letter or story. For comparison, ChatGPT can handle about 3,000 words. Overall, the AI space remains very early on to try and pick winners and I believe many investors will be disappointed a few years down the road as they unfortunately picked the wrong horse to bet on.   Starbucks Have you not been drinking as much Starbucks as you used to? The 52 week high for the stock is $109.72, but after reporting earnings the stock fell to $74.44. This was a 32.2% drop from the high. The company is struggling with their competitor in China, Luckin Coffee, and Starbucks saw a 11% decline in same store sales year over year. Starbucks has ambitious plans to roll out new beverages and increase their efficiency to bring back lost customers. Investors should note that there are union negotiations going on for 410 stores in the US, which could increase their labor cost and perhaps slow down their efficiency. In my opinion, even with this pull back it's still not a bargain as it still trades at almost 20 times earnings. We will do an analysis of Starbucks during our radio show and podcast on Saturday, May 11th after the numbers settle down and we can better view the company going forward.   Stocks Discussed: Tesla (TSLA), Albemarle (ALB), Manpower (MAN) and Ford (F)

Although the first quarter is usually one of the highest-performing times of the year for Starbucks — including both pumpkin spice and red cup season — Starbucks saw a traffic downturn for the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2023, with North America comparable sales up only 5%, driven mostly by menu price increases.During the Starbucks earnings call on Tuesday, CEO Laxman Narasimhan pointed to the Israel-Palestine conflict as a source of friction in both the Middle Eastern markets and in the U.S., where there have been calls for boycotts of Starbucks from supporters on both sides of the conflict. Narasimhan also explained that slower spending in China contributed to headwinds for the quarter — an issue that was highlighted by Luckin Coffee overtaking Starbucks as the number one coffee chain in China this November.

Shiyan Koh, Managing Partner of Hustle Fund, and I talked about three main topics: 1. Layoffs and Market Exits: Shiyan and I talked about the recent wave of layoffs: Biofourmis (45 staff in Singapore, and at least 85 staff globally) and Flash Coffee (closed all 11 Singapore outlets). We agreed on the importance of executing layoffs decisively, advocating for a single, well-planned and deep cut rather than a drawn-out process of multiple cuts. We touched upon the necessity of transparent communication, ensuring that the remaining team members are well-informed and supported throughout the transition, and highlighted the importance of agility in uncertain times. 2. Tech-Enabled D2C Consumer: We explored tech-enabled food services and analyzed the industry's financial intricacies, distribution challenges, and competitive landscape. We debated how coffee chains utilize tech not only in processing orders, how they choose locations, and differentiate in markets already saturated with traditional coffee chains. We talked about Luckin Coffee's unique model, which requires customers to download an app before placing an order, a strategy that streamlines the ordering process and serves customer acquisition and data collection, allowing it to better tailor its offerings and marketing strategies. 3. AI Productivity Transformation: We discussed EU's aim for AI regulations, similar to its GDPR for data privacy, vs. ASEAN's recently-stated hands-off approach, letting each country decide its own path. We also discussed the difficulty of halting AI development and pointed out the practical issues of enforcing regulations. We were skeptical about JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon's forecast of a 3.5 day workweek due to AI. While AI enhances productivity, it also intensifies competition, ultimately transforming entire industries rather than individual jobs. We also talked about AI bots and how they can already emulate the conversational style of specific individuals like Jason Calacanis and brainstormed possibilities like historical fiction podcasts featuring debates between figures like Napoleon and Gandhi. We also touched upon the NASDAQ performance of the MoneyHero SPAC (Seedly), authenticity and value of human error and spontaneity in content creation, suggesting that there might still be a preference for “artisanal podcasters”, the necessity of continuous learning and adaptation, the ethical dimensions of AI deployment, fostering innovation while ensuring data privacy and the strategies for maintaining balance and humanity in the fast-paced tech world. This achievement has significantly surpassed their previous successful product launches, including a cheese latte that managed to sell 1.31 million cups on its debut day and a coconut cloud latte with 660,000 cups sold. The star of the show, the "sauce-flavored latte," priced at 38 yuan ($5.23), witnessed an immediate surge in popularity when Luckin Coffee decided to offer it at a promotional price of 19 yuan on its first day. This pricing strategy sent shockwaves through Chinese social media platforms, resulting in a frenzy among coffee enthusiasts. Consequently, the demand for this unique beverage was so overwhelming that it quickly sold out in numerous Luckin Coffee outlets across Beijing and Shanghai within a matter of hours. Kweichow Moutai, renowned as China's national liquor, is a potent, colorless spirit traditionally reserved for special occasions and banquets. Drinkers often describe the flavor and aroma of Kweichow Moutai's version as reminiscent of soy sauce, giving this collaboration an intriguing twist by incorporating it into a coffee latte. Remarkably, despite its unconventional nature, this fusion has proven immensely popular among consumers, propelling Luckin Coffee to unprecedented success. It's important to note that the companies behind this innovative beverage have emphasized that the alcohol content in the latte is less than 0.5% of its total volume, ensuring it remains within the permissible limits for general consumption. The 100 million yuan ($13.72 million) in sales generated on the first day underscores not only the Chinese market's appetite for unique and creative culinary experiences but also the potential for further unconventional beverage collaborations. This milestone firmly cements Luckin Coffee's position as a trailblazer in the ever-evolving world of coffee and beverage innovation. Reference article: https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/chinas-luckin-sells-54-mln-moutai-alcohol-infused-lattes-day-2023-09-05/

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 17, 2023 11:59

It is a collaboration between the two Chinese beverage giants—Luckin Coffee and Moutai.它是中国两大beverage giants(饮品行业的巨头)的collaboration(联名)。这个新品一经上市,it was an instant hit(瞬间大火)。 • beverage /ˈbevərɪdʒ/ n. 饮料• giant /ˈdʒaɪənt/ n. It really created so much buzz on social media. And there are also so many hashtags on Weibo. Collaboration(联名)真的是a fresh and innovative way to make their product popular again(让产品变得流行的很创新的一种方式),这样做,对于联名的品牌彼此,达到了 win-win(双赢)。 They have been sold in over 160 Chinese cities,卖出了1000万杯。 看得出来,they are really trying to change the diversity of their products now (他们现在真的在努力改变他们产品的多样性),而且,取得的效果都很好。• diversity /daɪˈvɜ:rsəti/ n. Luckin is adding the fiery liquor to its lattes. 瑞幸咖啡里加了fiery liquor(烈酒)。 • fiery /ˈfaɪəri/ adj. Luckin coffee and Moutai have collaborated on a new product that spices up Luckin's coffee with Moutai baijiu. 比如说,you have a plain glass of water,你想让它变得好喝,you might add some flavorings like lemon to spice it up。 Younger Chinese consumers definitely drink more coffee than Baijiu. 所以,这也就能解释,为什么the collaboration between Luckin Coffee and Moutai会那么成功了。 A”,C stands for coffee and A for alcohol, 所以“早C晚A”就是说现在的年轻人早上喝咖啡晚上喝酒,当然喝酒一般都是小酌一杯休息一下。 中国的白酒可不是the White Wine,White Wine refers to 白葡萄酒,而我们的白酒是Chinese Baijiu。中国的白酒根据酿造的原材料的不同有很多种不同的香型(aroma),分为: rice aroma 米香型light aroma 淡(清)香型strong aroma 浓香型sauce aroma 酱香型主播梅莉说,她见到的foreigners还没有几个会喜欢白酒的, because it's too strong(度数太高了)。 M: Until next time! Bye bye!W: Bye!

In this in-depth episode, we delve into the captivating journey of Luckin Coffee, exploring their strategic evolution from the voucher stage to becoming a coffee sensation in China.  Luckin initially focused on selling coffee culture but quickly realized the key to their success lay in meeting Chinese consumers' demands for authentic coffee flavors. Notably, their coconut latte emerged as the most popular drink, catapulting their popularity to new heights. However, amidst their success, Luckin faced a setback due to a fraud issue, leading to a lawsuit and the eventual removal of their original founder. Yet, his entrepreneurial spirit didn't wane, as the same founder went on to launch another venture - Cotti Coffee. Meanwhile, Starbucks, a giant in the global coffee industry, stood as a formidable competitor with its unique selling point of offering more than just coffee; it provided an unparalleled experience and ambience synonymous with meeting for coffee. The customer experience at Starbucks and Luckin differs significantly, as the spaces each company creates cater to distinct preferences and moods. Explore the fascinating details of how ordering from these coffee titans differs; with Luckin, it's an app-exclusive process with no cashiers involved, ensuring swift order-to-delivery service. Furthermore, we question whether customers genuinely prioritize coffee taste or if other factors take precedence in their choices. Unearth the pricing dynamics between Starbucks and Luckin in Singapore, where the price point is quite similar, albeit Starbucks may marginally outprice Luckin. However, Luckin competes with a plethora of vouchers to entice customers. Interestingly, Luckin's semi-machine customization contrasts Starbucks' more flexible approach. Discover the strategic locations of these coffee powerhouses; while Starbucks enjoys the flexibility of choosing various locations, Luckin positions itself in central and convenient spots for maximum visibility and accessibility.
