Linda Simpson was at the core of the New York City Drag scene during the industry's golden era when it was still underground, prior to becoming a mainstream movement. From her own origins to her professional work, Simpson shares with ODDA her story, creative view, and the roots of the Drag world.
Linda Simpson performed in and chronicled the New York drag scene in the '80s and '90s, taking some 5,000 photos of performers. Her collection is called The Drag Explosion. She says Tennessee's anti-drag legislation is "ridiculous." Also, we remember late Episcopal Bishop Frank Griswold. He presided over the ordination of the church's first openly gay bishop. He died earlier this month. John Powers reviews the new Netflix thriller series The Night Agent.

What can I say about Linda Simpson that others have not? Probably nothing. Linda Simpson is a well-known and iconic drag queen in New York City, best known for her documentarian role and photo-taking skills. Linda and I discuss fitting in, authenticity, and being a good person. Linda is an absolute delight, and she loves bingo! She has a virtual bingo that DJ Rockstar Aaron (Guest 84 on the podcast) of ForbiddenBingo.com asked me to play with him last month, while I was in Waikiki. I won a coffin flask, which has yet to be put to use! Linda is also an author of a few books you might have heard of, and just released a beautiful documentarian-style book called The Drag Explosion last year, which will be the best gem on your coffee table. Linda might be my new favorite person! What a delight. Imposter syndrome impacts everyone in such unique ways, but those that champion their weirdness and uniqueness tend to be the happiest and successful. Take it from Linda: be yourself, because why the hell not? Forever a fan! This episode is dedicated to Eve, who the world lost last week. Friendship #God's Standard Guidance Rev. Linda Simpson John 15:12-15 This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends. 14 You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. Proverbs 17:17 A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: 10 If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. 11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? 12 Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

The readings from 1st Peter chapter 4 guide the conversations that Seth Johnson has with Geoff and Linda Simpson who went for a mission trip early this year to Nepal. Peter writes a lot about suffering in the book of 1st Peter. He seems pretty clear that we should be prepared to suffer for Christ. Geoff and Linda share examples of suffering that they saw in Nepal that will help us to understand more clearly what this text of Scripture looks like in the 21st century. 1 Peter 4: 7-10 reads, "The end of all things is near. Therefore, be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms. We all can live missional lives even in the midst of a pandemic.

In the mid 80s, at the height of the AIDS crisis, New York City experienced a drag revolution. Cheap rent, fabulous clubs and a wide variety of people from all around the world living shoulder to shoulder, and girdle to girdle, created a drag explosion that released a mega ton of glitter and talent, leaving in its wake a culture that embraced drag like never before. In the center of the action was drag queen Linda Simpson, who took pictures of all the kooky kids in the club scene with her portable camera. To Linda it was all casual fun but to the rest of the world now, it’s legendary.Best known as a journalist for her indie magazine My Comrade, Linda Simpson gathered in-depth interviews with entertainers and nightclub personalities who would have otherwise been left forgotten in the dark corners of the club.In her new book, The Drag Explosion, Linda Simpson reveals hundreds of full color photos of the New York Drag scene of the ‘80s and '90s including many legends when they were just stepping out in high heels onto the world.Today, Linda Simpson gives us a look into her new book The Drag Explosion, her queer underground magazine My Comrade and why we still feel all these years later the shockwaves of the Drag Explosion.Plus, why did Fran Lebowitz call drag queens childish?LINDA SIMPSON: http://www.lindalovesbingo.com

Keeping the Fire & Fellowship Rev. Linda Simpson Joshua 1:8 8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you[a] shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
In Contempt of God Rev Linda Simpson Numbers 14:1-11 New King James Version (NKJV) Israel Refuses to Enter Canaan 14 So all the congregation lifted up their voices and cried, and the people wept that night. 2 And all the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them, “If only we had died in the land of Egypt! Or if only we had died in this wilderness! 3 Why has the Lord brought us to this land to [a]fall by the sword, that our wives and children should become victims? Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?” 4 So they said to one another, “Let us select a leader and return to Egypt.” 5 Then Moses and Aaron [b]fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel. 6 But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes; 7 and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: “The land we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. 8 If the Lord delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, ‘a land which flows with milk and honey.’ 9 Only do not rebel against the Lord, nor fear the people of the land, for they[c] are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the Lord is with us. Do not fear them.” 10 And all the congregation said to stone them with stones. Now the glory of the Lord appeared in the tabernacle of meeting before all the children of Israel. Moses Intercedes for the People 11 Then the Lord said to Moses: “How long will these people reject[d] Me? And how long will they not believe Me, with all the [e]signs which I have performed among them?
I’m actually so excited to come back from our hiatus to this episode of The True Beauty Brooklyn Podcast. As Alix and I listened to this interview in preparing to record, we realized that there are things that our incredible guest, Andre Springer recalls that are so striking, and a little haunting considering the timing of the COVID-19 crisis. Andre is the artist behind what we consider the personification of your favorite Auntie, Shaquanda, and the co-founder of the consumer goods company, Shaquanda’s Hot Pepper Sauce. You guys will see what we mean, in that Andre first really started working on his Drag character, Shaquanda during the first financial crisis of our millennial lives, back in 2008. As we listened to this episode, we remembered what it was like during the first times of uncertainty in our adult lives, and how it forced creativity in our generation. The loving, endearing, funny, and beautiful drag character Shaquanda was first created by Andre back in the early 2000’s. As you’ll hear, she was resurrected after the Great Recession when he returned to New York from California and began working in restaurants and nightlife. At the time there weren’t many jobs available, especially within the creative and luxury industries that he had always worked in. When he met his first drag mentor, Linda Simpson host of Gay Jeopardy, a spark was ignited. He was inspired to focus, fusing his creativity, his incredibly friendly and loving personality, the pride of his heritage with the love of his City, and hone his artistic, and design skills. The result is not only a character for the stage, but a consumer goods product to line the shelves of our grocery stores. The logo of brand includes the image of a beautiful, gender-fluid, brown drag queen, sporting the friendliest wide-mouthed smile that you can’t help but smile back at. In our episode Andre is brilliant enough to speak on the importance of equity and equality, (can I get an amen?), the importance of kindness, empathy and of course, representation. You might be thinking, why does representation matter? Off the top of your head, name an American food brand character. HINT: it’s not good when you can name 7 make-believe creatures, and talking animals before you can name a person of color on a food box.I hope that his story is what some of you need to hear today! I think we can all take the message that Andre’s story tells to heart. Now more than ever, we all need to believe in ourselves 100%, even if we don’t know what the road ahead looks like. Just like Andre! Please visit our new site at www.truebeautybrooklynpodcast.com and email us your questions and comments at truebeautybrooklynpodcast@gmail.com visit https://shaquandawillfeedyou.com/ for more information on Andre and to purchase Shaquanda's Hot Pepper Sauce

Television audiences are currently obsessed with shows like RuPaul's Drag Race and FX's Pose, presenting different angles on the profession and art of drag. New York City has been crucial to its current moment in pop culture and people have been performing and enjoy drag performers in this city for over 120 years. In the beginning there were two styles of drag -- vaudeville and ballroom. As female impersonators filled Broadway theaters -- one theater is even named for a famed gender illusionist -- thrill seekers were heading to the balls of Greenwich Village and Harlem. By the 1930s, the gay scene began retreating into the shadows, governed by mob control and harshly policed. By design, drag became political. It also became a huge counter-cultural influence in the late 1960s -- from the glamour of Andy Warhol's superstars to the jubilant schtick of Charles Busch. But it was the 1980s that brought the most significant influences to our current pop cultural moment. Joining Greg on this show are two experts on two late 80s/early 90s scenes -- Felix Rodriguez, a videographer of the ballroom culture (made famous by the film Paris Is Burning) and Linda Simpson, one of the great queens of East Village drag. FEATURING: Drag kings! Wigstock! And the famous drag queen who got struck by lightning. Support the show.
